Black History Month Keynote Address "Re-Imagining Blackness: Boldly Engaging Cultural Differences in Black Twin Cities” Tuesday, February 12 at 11:30 AM 112 Anderson Center What does it mean to engage the “black other”? What are the distinctive stories of blackness that emerge in the Twin Cities, considering the broad diversity of people of African descent who co-inhabit urban communities? How can we confront the deep alienation and isolation that exist as a result of denying the harsh reality of racism and discrimination that face all African descendant people in Minnesota? Dr. Zensele Isoke will respond to these questions, as well as provide much needed information about the demographic realities that black folks face in the Twin Cities. Isoke is Assistant Professor of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota. She is author of Urban Black Women and the Politics of Resistance. Saakumu West African Drum and Dance Troupe Thursday, February 14 at 7:00 PM Sundin Music Hall An exciting evening of culture and inspiration awaits audiences as Hamline welcomes back Saakumu Drum and Dance Troupe, a leading traditional and contemporary dance and music group in Ghana, West Africa. Led by master gyl musician Bernard Woma, the group’s repertoire includes a range of spiritual, ceremonial and contemporary African dance forms. A ‘free will’ donation of $5 is suggested. A Tribute to Black Cultural Icons: 50 Before 50 Friday, February 15 at 7:00 PM Sundin Music Hall Experience a night o musical, poetic, and theatrical performances honoring 50 Black Americans who achieved success before the age of 50, including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Gabby Douglas, Marvin Gaye, Monique, Spike Lee, Malcolm X, Magic Johnson and President Barack Obama. Performers include Hamline students and local artists including actor/singer Julius Collins III and dance group Immortal Dance Crew. Documentary & Discussion: A Question of Color Wednesday, February 20 at 6:00 PM 111 Anderson Center A Question of Color is the first documentary to confront a painful and long taboo subject: the disturb- ing feelings many African Americans harbor about themselves and their appearance. This film digs into the often subconscious world of "color consciousness,” a caste system based on how closely skin color, hair texture and facial features conform to a European ideal. Come join in an important discussion about colorism in the Black community. Pizza and refreshments provided. East African Soul Food Dinner Sunday, February 24 at 6:00 PM Location: To Be Announced In celebration of Black History Month, join PRIDE BSA for a traditional East African dinner, fellowship, awards and cultural entertainment.
