Dear Parents, Families, and Friends of St. Bernard Academy,

I am very excited to share this issue of our annual report, The Clairvaux, with you. Many wonderful things have taken place both to the physical plant and to the schools programs,

and we continue to be blessed with an energized staff of teaching professionals who are truly committed to each child’s success. St. Bernard is among the leaders academically in Nashville, and as each year passes, it is manifested by what our graduates accomplish. You see evidence of that in the pages that follow.

Most recently, we have completed a strategic plan that involved all of the stakeholders and constituencies in our school family. The group has generated a document that helps shape the vision of St. Bernard Academy for the immediate future. Some of the goals that were articulated include enhancing our Catholic identity, continuing to support our faculty with professional development, and physical site improvements that will increase our footprint and support a full slate of programs.

Our future continues to burn bright as we reflect on the message created by our founding order, the Sisters of Mercy. Their continued commitment to support St. Bernard Academy with their prayers in addition to serving on our Board of Directors is valued, timeless, and deeply appreciated. We witness the charism of the Sisters in every child we have the opportunity to educate.

As we approach our 150th Anniversary (2016), it is very evident that one of our priorities is to keep the school financially viable as well as goal oriented. Our place among the independent schools is just as important as our place among the Catholic schools as we continue to follow the mission so clearly expressed and supported by the Board: “. . . to provide an excellent Catholic academic education built on a foundation of self-discipline, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for social justice in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy.”

Dear Friends,

This report serves to thank everyone who gave their time, talent and resources to St. Bernard Academy in 2011-12 and

to share some recent news with the broader St. Bernard Academy community.

I am currently serving my first year as Board President and my third year as a Board member. I am also a St. Bernard Academy parent. It has been a very busy year already, and we are just getting started. The strategic-planning process is well underway, and we eagerly await the completed plan that will guide us through the next many years. It has been a remarkable experience to work with SBA parents, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, board members, and administrators through this process. The dedication of this group has been very inspiring, and the continued focus on the mission of St. Bernard Academy, “to provide an excellent Catholic academic education built on a foundation of self-discipline, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for social justice in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy,” has been kept at the forefront of the entire process.

Enrollment, academics, athletics, service to others, and so many other aspects of St. Bernard Academy are thriving and continuing to grow. Students appear eager to learn, ready to serve, and proud to be members of such a wonderful community. The common phrase many parents hear, “they grow up so fast”, is true. By sending our children to St. Bernard Academy, we are not just providing a wonderful education, but an experience that will help shape them into amazing adults with compassion, character, and a desire to be lifelong learners.

Thank you, again, for supporting St. Bernard Academy. The Board of Trust is honored to walk alongside you as we continue to support this fine Academy and to help ensure its success for centuries to come.

Catherine Capps – Level OneCatherine was born and raised in Nashville, TN, and attended Belmont University to receive a degree in Early Childhood Education. She came to SBA a year after graduating to start the Pre-Kindergarten program with Ms. Moxley. They had four very successful years together! In 2011, she followed her heart and moved to Beijing, China, to serve in a foster home for special needs children. There she trained preschool

teachers how to teach younger children effectively and implement schedules, educational goals, and behavior plans. The afternoon class for older children brought about many challenges both cognitively and physically, but out of it grew a successful English and Math class! Catherine stayed there for three months, then, made additional trips back to check on the classes and be an educational consultant for other programs. She has a passion for children, learning, and those in need. In the summer of 2012, the program was officially handed back over to the Chinese teachers, and she returned to teach at SBA in first grade. She is thrilled to be back and even more excited to be teaching Reading and Language Arts. In her down time she enjoys traveling, being with her family, reading, and playing sports.

Candice Coon – Business ManagerCandice was born and raised in Nashville, TN. After high school, she attended Trevecca Nazarene University with her twin sister, where she majored in Accounting and was a member of the Trevecca Nazarene Women’s Basketball Team. She went on to graduate from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a Minor in Business Administration. Candice comes to St. Bernard with five years of

Accounting and Management experience. She now resides in Brentwood, TN with her husband and one year old daughter. Her hobbies include church, spending time with her daughter, running, shopping, traveling, and watching her husband play professional baseball. Candice is so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the St. Bernard family.

Jade Ervin – Levels Six and SevenJade Ervin is a 2010 graduate of Belmont University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She continued on to graduate school at Belmont and earned a Master of Arts in Teaching the following year. After graduating with her Master’s, Jade was accepted to a year-long educational exchange program in southern Spain. She moved to Almeria, a small town in Southern Andalucía, a few weeks after graduation.

During her time in Spain, Jade lived with a host family and taught English in one of the local schools. She returned in June 2012 and was thrilled to accept a job at St. Bernard Academy.

Jade was born and raised in Morganfield, Kentucky and is the third oldest of 24 cousins. She comes from a family of devout Catholics and still remains deeply rooted in her faith. In her free time, Jade enjoys reading novels, running, cooking, and spending time with her sister/roommate, Mallory.

Caitlin Ferguson – Level Two Caitlin graduated from St. Bernard Academy and is so excited to have the opportunity to come back to teach! Caitlin went to high school at St. Cecilia Academy, then went on to further her education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she received her Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education, Pre-Kindergarten through third grade and Special Education Preschool through third grade. In her free time, Caitlin loves spending time with her

family and friends. She also enjoys painting, playing basketball, and cooking.

Christy Harrell – Kindergarten AideChristy is a native of east Tennessee but has lived all of her adult life in Nashville. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta with an undergraduate degree in biology and Vanderbilt University with a Master’s degree in speech-language pathology. She worked in rehabilitation at Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for a number of years. Christy is married and has two children, Samuel and Rachel. For the past eleven years, Christy has loved being

a full-time mother but has felt called toward elementary education in some capacity. She has been a substitute teacher during the past two years at SBA, primarily in kindergarten and pre-kindergarten. She is excited to be serving this year as the kindergarten teaching assistant. Christy enjoys sewing, cooking, playing the violin, vegetable gardening, and spending time with her family.

Brittany Iams – Levels Five and SixBrittany Iams came to St. Bernard Academy with three years of teaching experience in Catholic education in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a native of South Bend, Indiana, and received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from St. Mary’s College. Brittany has always wanted to be a teacher, and she is honored to be fulfilling that dream teaching math and social studies at SBA. Brittany lives in Nashville with her husband Wade

who is a Medicine Resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In her free time Brittany enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, cooking, reading, shopping, and watching Notre Dame football. Brittany is committed to lifelong learning and hopes to promote her love for learning in her students at SBA.

Mandy Nowlin – Level Three Mandy was born and raised in Indiana. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Saint Louis University, where she played on the basketball team. In 2008, she earned her Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Olivet Nazarene University. This school year is her ninth year of teaching. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her

husband, Jay, and daughter, Ella.

Ingrid Patrick – Level One Ingrid was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, the third of four daughters. After graduating from Marymount School, she began her college career at the Universidad de la Savana in Bogota. She then transferred to MTSU in Murfreesboro, TN, where she completed her undergraduate degree in psychology. Ingrid received her Masters in Education

from Belmont University in December 2012. While attending school, Ingrid worked as an assistant in Pre-K, Kindergarten and Aftercare at St. Bernard Academy and is excited to return to SBA as a first grade teacher. Ingrid enjoys travel, movies, music, cooking and spending time with friends and family. She recently celebrated her eighth wedding anniversary and lives in the Hillsboro village area with her husband and dog Jack.

Katelyn Seliskar – Junior High Katelyn began her career in teaching during the summers of her college years volunteering as a aide in remedial science classes in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Her love of science stems from both classroom work and research positions at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In May 2011, she graduated from the University

of Rochester in New York with a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Never one to back down from an opportunity to go to school, Katelyn started her graduate work in Inclusive Science Education at the Warner School of Education at Rochester the day after she received her undergraduate degree. In her free time, Katelyn enjoys watching and playing ice hockey, reading novels, and exploring the city of Nashville.

Christine Scruggs – Director of School AdvancementChristine became Director of School Advancement in July 2012 after serving on SBA’s faculty for 6 years. Christine brings 10 years of marketing management experience to this position along with a Masters in Education from Trevecca Nazarene University and a B.A. in Communication from Miami University in Ohio. Her two children, Olivia ’13 and Evan

’15, have attended St. Bernard Academy since Kindergarten. Christine is passionate about spreading the message of St. Bernard Academy’s mission and looks forward to being part of SBA’s bright future.

Hannah Thompson – Pre-K AideHannah is a graduate of Centre College with a B.S in Psychology. She currently is a graduate student in Trevecca Nazarene University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program. After graduating, Hannah taught at Cathedral Day School for two years and worked for the Autism Foundation of Tennessee as well. Hannah is a St. Bernard graduate and attends St. Matthew Church. When not working or studying, she loves

working out, reading, and being with her friends and family.

Leslie Winter – Learning SpecialistLeslie moved to Nashville in 2003, making Tennessee the ninth state she has lived in (including all of the “I” states!). She has a Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science from Sterling College and a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from the University of Wyoming. She has worked as a behavior specialist with developmentally disabled adults and as a speech-language pathologist with children of all ages

and needs. Leslie has worked the past eight years at the Learning Lab in Brentwood, TN, as an educational diagnostician, reading specialist, and home-school educator. She is currently the Senior Vice President of the Tennessee Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. As part of her passion for educating people about dyslexia, she presents at Tennessee’s annual conference, as well as travels around Middle Tennessee providing training and awareness opportunities to parents and teachers. Leslie loves to read, watch baseball and football games, and spend time with her cat, Sam. She is excited to be SBA’s first Learning Specialist. She feels the variety of her work experiences provides a unique background to address the diversity of concerns students face today. She looks forward to working with students, teachers, and parents to provide the best learning environment for all.

Her legendary whistle may be gone, but at

Saint Bernard Academy, Miss Pat’s legacy lives on. The school’s driveway was renamed Miss Pat’s Way on September 26, 2012 in memory of Patricia Edmondson who served as crossing guard until May 2012. “Miss Pat” as she was fondly known to students, passed

away on May 28, 2012 after complications from her battle with kidney disease. A touching dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Saint Bernard Academy on September 26, 2012. Members of the Edmondson family and the Metropolitan Nashville School Crossing Guard Section gathered with faculty, staff, students and friends of St. Bernard Academy for the event. “Miss Pat was always smiling when she was out there, rain or shine, no matter what type of weather,” said Head of School, Carl Sabo. “You could hear her whistle throughout the school and knew that Miss Pat was slowing traffic down to keep our families safe.” Having been a part of the school’s community for so long, the renaming of the school’s driveway seemed a natural way to honor Miss Pat’s memory and recognize her commitment and love for Saint Bernard’s children. “Now whenever we come to school, we’ll see the sign for Miss Pat’s Way and think of how much she meant to us,” said a Saint Bernard parent. Saint Bernard Academy students also teamed up for the Tennessee Kidney Foundation Gift of Life Walk/5K in September 2012 and raised over $2,000 for the Tennessee

Kidney Foundation in memory of Miss Pat. “Miss Pat was more than a crossing guard to me. She was also my friend,” said Saint Bernard 6th grade student Kate Dortch. Patricia Edmondson was a devoted public servant who served Metro Nashville Police as a crossing guard for 25 years. She helped keep students safe as they crossed the street at Nashville’s Saint Bernard Academy each morning and afternoon. As her sons, Maurice and Willie, revealed the bright red sign marking Miss Pat’s Way, students released balloons in her memory to a cheering crowd. Miss Pat’s devotion to her job and our community showed what a positive impact one person can have on the lives of many. Valedictorian Suzanne EastwoodThe Valedictorian of the class of 2012 was Suzanne Eastwood. Suzanne is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Eastwood. She is a member of West End United Methodist Church. She was involved in multiple service projects with Graceworks and Second Harvest Foodbank. Suzanne was a member of the varsity volleyball team. She competed in forensics tournaments and also

Science Olympiad at the regional and state levels. Suzanne was the Student Council President, a member of the National Junior Honor Society, a Student Ambassador, and a Duke University TIP scholar. Suzanne had a grade point average of 98.6% and attends St. Cecilia Academy.

Salutatorian Thomas MassionThe Salutatorian of the class of 2012 was Thomas Massion. Thomas is the son of Dr. Pierre Massion and Ms. Tebeb Gebretsadik. He is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Thomas was a member of the soccer, basketball, and cross country teams and also received the Bill Edwards Award. He competed at Father Ryan Math Day and also the Science Olympiad regional and state competitions. Thomas was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and a Duke University TIP scholar. He was

also a volunteer with the SBA Summer Camp Program. Thomas also played piano at Belmont University School of Music. He had a grade point average of 97.7% . Thomas attends Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School and is a member of the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt, Class of 2016.

This 2012 graduating class is truly a special one. Sixty-four percent of the class qualified for the President’s Academic Award with a grade point average of 93 or above. Forty percent of the class are Duke University Talent Identification Program scholars. Forty-six percent of the class had been here since kindergarten. Fifty-seven percent went on to Father Ryan High School. The others attend St. Cecilia Academy, Pope John Paul II, Nashville School of the Arts, Hume-Fogg, Battle Ground Academy, Harpeth Hall, Franklin High School, Christ Presbyterian Academy, and University School of Nashville.

Sally Schiller Award Sally Schiller was a 2003 graduate of St. Bernard Academy and worked in the SBA Aftercare Program all through high school as well as during the summer. She loved the children and planned to become a teacher. Sally was injured in an automobile accident on her way home from college and died shortly thereafter.

The Sally Schiller Award is given to the student who exemplifies Sally’s kind and gener-ous heart and a love for children. This award was presented to Kennedy Bell.

The President’s Award for Educational Excellence

The purpose of this award is to recognize aca-demic success in the classroom. To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade of 93 or above.

the North Nashville Outreach program

in November 2012 in preparation for

feeding Nashville’s hungry during the

holidays.

St. Bernard Academy has a tradition

of collecting non-perishable food

items each month on behalf of Catholic

Charities to help feed Nashville’s hungry. Students bring food items to each

month’s liturgy celebration for donation to Catholic Charities’ North Nashville

Outreach program.

“This year, we added a new element to our annual school-wide Halloween

celebration. We decided to challenge each homeroom class to collect the most

canned goods,” said Mrs. Joanie Knox, Student Council Faculty Sponsor. “It was a

way to introduce an element of community service to our party. We knew there

were many hungry people who would need to be fed during the holidays and

thought that a Monster Food Drive was a good way to serve Nashville.”

Each of St. Bernard Academy’s homeroom classes was challenged to collect the

greatest number of canned goods during the school’s annual Monster Food Drive

which was held October 31, 2012. The winning homeroom collected a whopping

271 cans!

“North Nashville Outreach was elated to see all the food unloaded by our

students when we delivered it to their facility,” said Mr. Curt Winter, Assistant

Head of School. “The holiday season was coming up, and our students knew this

donation would make a difference.”

Eighth level students organized, loaded and delivered the heavy boxes of food

to North Nashville Outreach, then stayed to help organize and stock the pantry.

The first annual SBA Golf Classic was played on Sunday, October 14 at Harpeth Hills Golf Course. Forty-three golfers teed off under cloudy skies and windy conditions to compete in the four person scramble format. The first place winning team, shooting a score of 61 and 11 under par were Brian Laden, Jim Harris, Bill Rick and Brandon Lunke, finishing in 2nd place with a team score of 62 and 10 under par included Robert Dortch, Todd Estepp, Wink Neal and Phillip Gentry. The third place team shot a 63 and were 9 under par. Team members were Pat Scruggs, Marshall Kelley, John West and Jim Donato. Special events winners were Robert Dortch and Ray McCool for closest to the pin, Jim Donato for longest putt and Brennan Bailey for longest drive. We would like to thank all the players, hole sponsors, donors and volunteers for participating in and making our inaugural SBA Golf Classic a success. Special thanks to the members of the Golf Committee, especially Chairperson, Kelley Henry. The proceeds from this year’s event will be used to help defray the cost of the 8th level class trip to New York City in April.

Mary Kate BestFather Ryan High School. Mary Kate was a member of the National Honor Society and played Varsity Soccer all four years. She received the Hope Scholarship attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Nan BumpusEnsworth High School with Honors. Nan was a Optime Merens Award Winner as well as Cum Laude in Math and Science. She participated on the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. Nan was a member of the Ambassador Club, Community Service Club and a Search Leader.

Nan enjoyed tutoring at-risk youth at Family Affair Ministries and helping to coach various SBA Basketball Teams. Nan received the Hope Scholarship and attends the University of Tennessee, majoring in Speech Pathology.

Lauren DoyleFather Ryan High Schoolwith Honors. Lauren wasa member of the National Honor Society, Freshmen Honor Society, Cum Laude Honor Society, SpanishHonor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. Lauren was an AP Scholar with Distinction. She received

the Modern World History Medal, Geography Medal, Cheerleading Academic Achievement Award, and was a varsity cheerleader all four years. Lauren received the Volunteer Scholarship and is attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, majoring in Social Work.

Chandana GaddipatiSalutatorian, Hillsboro High School. Chandana received the IB Diploma Programme Communicators Award and Art History Award. She was a member of the National Honor Society, VP of Environmental Club, Freshman Mentor and President of the Spanish

Club. Chandana received the Dean’s Scholarship to Saint Louis University majoring in Health Management and Public Health.

Anna GraingerEnsworth High School with Honors, Cum Laude in Math. Anna received the USA Swimming Scholastic High School All-American and the NISCA High School All-American (100 Back and 200 IM). She was an Olympic Trials Qualifier (200 Back) and USA National Qualifier (100 and 200 Back). She was voted by her senior classmates as “Female Most Likely to Become a Professional Athlete”. Anna received an athletic scholarship for women’s swimming at Notre Dame.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) HarlessSt. Cecilia Academy. Lizzie was President of the Theater’s Guild, Vice President of Forensics and Secretary of the National Honor Society. She was an AP Scholar with Distinction. She twice qualified for the national forensics tournament placing fourth

nationally in Poetry. She was the Tennessee State Champion in Prose. She was nominated actress of the year her Freshman, Junior and Senior years. She received the Leadership Award and Student of the Year. She received the Merit Scholarship, TN High School Speech and Drama League, Kathleen Thayer Beech Scholarship and Founder Music Scholarship. Lizzie attends New York University.

Caitlyn JonesFranklin High School with Honors. Caitlyn received the Merit Scholarship. She is attending Clemson University majoring in Bioengineering.

Cindy LampleyEnsworth High School. Cindy received the Academic and Artistic Scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design.

Bridget LawrenceBaylor High School/Hillwood High School. Bridget received the Foote Fellows Program Scholarship to attend the University of Miami. Bridget is majoring is Anthropology.

Margee LopezHume-Fogg Academic Magnet with Honors. Margee was a member of the National Honor Society and of Mu Alpha Theta.She received the Presidential Scholarship and is attending the University of Evansville in their Neuroscience Program.

Alexandria WallSt. Cecilia Academy. Alex was on the St. Cecilia Ambassador Board and an Ambassador for the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership. She received the Hope Scholarship, UT Volunteer Scholarship, University of TN Pledge Scholarship and Volunteer Honors Scholarship. Alex is attending the University of Tennessee, majoring in Chemical Engineering.

Statement of Activities

It was my pleasure to serve as Saint Bernard Academy’s Home and School Association President for the 2011-12 academic year. The objectives of SBA’s Home and School Association are trifold: to promote fellowship, to work and serve together for the good of the students and St. Bernard Academy and to support the school through fundraising efforts. With the help of many parents, students and faculty and staff, I think we accomplished this with flying colors! We started the year by welcoming new families to our community with yard signs, Pre-K and Kindergarten parties and a family night outing to a Sounds baseball game. We continued on with Fall and Spring Jr. High dances, a father/daughter dance, a mother/son outing to a Vanderbilt baseball game, and receptions for faculty and staff at Christmas and Catholic Schools Week. We also hosted numerous other receptions including Grandparents Day of Catholic Schools Week, First Penance, First Communion, and both Kindergarten and 8th Grade graduations. We hosted a Fall Fair for the SBA community, a successful drive for gifts

for the Catholic Charities Angel Tree, and assisted with school communication through monthly newsletters from our room parents to each grade level. None of these very popular events would be possible without the fundraising that the Home and School Association does so well. In the fall, we had a magazine sale, and in the spring, we had our annual spring auction fundraiser. These two events raised enough money to cover the annual budget for Home and School Association as well as to help with the cost of projects taken on by the school. These projects included the renovation of the music room, shade covers for the kindergarten playground, new concrete steps at the school’s front entry and the remainder of the cost of the lobby renovation. I cannot thank my fellow HSA officers and committee chairs enough for their hard work in 2011-12. Without their efforts, our school community would have been sorely lacking! I leave the guidance of HSA for the 2012-13 academic year to Kelly Delaney, my trusty vice president in 2011-12. I feel certain that she, along with her newly appointed officers and chairs, will do a tremendous job uniting our school community for yet another successful year! It seemed fitting that I should visit The Mercy House on Baggot St. in Dublin, Ireland this year. This was the original house

where Catherine McAuley started the order of The Sisters of Mercy. It was also the beginning of senior year for my daughter,

Evangeline, who attended St. Bernard Academy 2000-2009. I didn’t really plan to go, but I happened to meet up with one

of my Nashville friends, Dr. Trisha Deegan, whose daughters

also attended St Bernard Academy for a few years. She is Irish

and was on a trip back ‘home’ to see family and friends. I was

dropping Evie off at University College Dublin for a summer

of Irish studies before senior year at USN. Trish and I decided

to meet on Grafton Street for breakfast, and then we just

headed to Mercy House like we had always intended to do

it. It was so wonderful, like a pilgrimage. We had a lovely

visit. I was so moved as we stood around Catherine’s grave.

There was a candle lit for a sister who had just passed away.

We all stood in prayer, and I was struck by the moment. I had

come full circle. Since my first meeting with Sr. Melanie and

Sr. Nena at the SBA Open House in 1999 to now July 2012. My

child had received all the benefits of a Mercy education and the mission of Catherine. She

was educated with love and brought to an awareness of the care and compassion we

should offer to the poor and needy. She is still that same child at 17. Here lay the

beginnings of all that, and I was suddenly so thankful. I couldn’t look at Trish. I

knew we were both teary.

Catherine wrote many instructions for her order on how to carry on after

she was gone. The one our children came home with from SBA was the

one about making sure there was always a ‘comfortable cup of tea ‘ after

she was gone. I also read part of her manuscript with words to the effect

that whoever shall offer help to a Sister of Mercy in her mission, they will

be blessed for eternity. My eyes just welled up immediately. I thought of

all the good people back in Nashville at SBA who have worked tirelessly

to keep the school going and to keep elements of the Mercy tradition

alive and well. For those who helped the Sisters in their mission, you

are forever blessed. Catherine McAuley said so! I am so blessed to have

been on this journey. I thought it ended in 2009 at Evie’s graduation, but

it is still going on.

The St. Bernard Academy Class of 1957 commemorated their 55th reunion in Nashville on August 3-4, 2012. Some traveled from Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia just to attend the reunion.

Fifteen of the twenty-four surviving alumnae met at River Plantation Clubhouse VIII on Old Harding Road on the evening of Friday, August 3 for appetizers, wine, and a catered dinner from Brown Bag Catering. There was an abundance of “girl talk”, laughter and even a few tears as they reminisced and caught up on each other’s lives, careers, marriages, children and grandchildren.

On Saturday, August 4, fourteen of the group and some of their spouses drove to Hendersonville to the Old Hickory lake house of Eddie and Mary Margaret Lambert, where they enjoyed Demo’s lasagna, salad, rolls and assorted homemade desserts, courtesy of the Nashville alums. Boat rides were on the agenda, but due to storms in the area, had to be postponed. No one seemed to mind the inclement weather, as conversation flowed and laughter once more abounded. Digital cameras captured scenes from the memorable gathering, and everyone agreed that it was a very photogenic group.

It was a great weekend, and the consensus was that the classmates hope to gather again, and that they hope to have 100% attendance at the next reunion.

Class of 1957 Reunion

Ruth Johnson, ’68, Receives Nashville’s Prestigious 2012 ATHENA Award

Applause and cheers from over 500 of Nashville’s business elite greeted Ruth E. Johnson ’68 as she received the 2012 Nashville ATHENA Award at a gala celebration in March 2012.

“No one woman can create the change that is needed. That work must be done by all of us. It takes all of us to change the way that women are viewed and treated in this society,” Ms. Johnson said in her acceptance speech.

Ms. Johnson was one of 29 nominees from Middle Tennessee for the Nashville ATHENA Award which honors business and professional women for their career successes, service to community and encouragement of women. The program seeks to inspire women to achieve excellence in their personal and professional lives. Since the program’s inception in 1982, ATHENA awards have been presented to outstanding women in more than 500 communities in the United States and around the world.

During a recent campus visit, she shared memories about her time at St. Bernard Academy. Ms. Johnson attended St. Bernard Academy as a high school student from 1964-1968.

“I remember these cabinets and counters, they look just the same as when I was here,” Ms. Johnson commented about what used to be the home economics room as she toured what is now Room 12. An all-girl high school at the time, St. Bernard Academy offered home economics to all of its students. “That was something most girls did in the 1960’s,” Ms. Johnson commented.

Ms. Johnson went on from St. Bernard to graduate with honors from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and earned her law degree at Vanderbilt University. She currently serves as Associate Vice President for Advancement at Meharry Medical College, and is a board member with First Bank and the Baptist Healing Trust.

Ms. Johnson began her career as an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service and has earned many leadership roles in her professional work. Ms. Johnson served as Tennessee’s Commissioner of Revenue from 1995-2003 under Governor Don Sundquist and has been on the Board of the Nashville Symphony Association. She also spent time as a member of the National Advisory Council for Minority Health, the Executive Committee of the Association of Tax Administrators and has received many notable awards for her outstanding leadership.

St. Bernard Academy congratulates outstanding alumna Ruth Johnson on this prestigious award, and we thank her for her dedication and hard work in the Nashville community and the State of Tennessee. She continues to be an inspiration to St. Bernard Academy.

Grade School Class of 1999 – Eric FerrariEric graduated from Nashville State Community College. He was on the Principal’s List and in the Honors Choir. He is a certified fitness trainer and nutritionist currently in nursing school. Eric has a 2nd degree black belt. He is the lead guitarist and singer for the Allhail The Ghost Rock Band. Grade School Class of 2005 – Helene Kirschke-SchwartzHelene attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She spent the summer of 2012 in Moshi, Tanzania working for an NGO, “White Orange Youth”, which provides HIV/AIDS education in schools. Helene is planning to apply to medical school.

Grade School Class of 2007 – Connor StoneConnor is a Private First Class in the Tennessee Army National Guard. He attends Tennessee Technical School majoring in Agricultural Engineering.
