Reading Makes Cents Trunk

Reading Makes Cents is a collection of 53 experiential activities developed around exemplary children’s literature that has money as a theme.

Each activity relates to a theme and highlights a specific financial concept, value, or practice (e.g. saving, spending, sharing, earning, borrowing, lending and managing). The literature, concepts about money, and activities were selected to appeal to children in grades 3-5.

All books are identified as one of two levels; level one book’s are appropriate for beginning readers and level two books for more independent readers.

The design of the curriculum features hands-on, exploratory activities that can be completed in an afterschool setting; however, the curriculum could also be used in a traditional 4-H program, with home-schooled youth, or in a school enrichment program.  Because parental involvement is essential to teaching children about money and encouraging literacy, take-home activities available in English and Spanish (8-10 for each book level) are included.

There are two Reading Makes Cents trunks that will be at the Ag Communication Distribution Center and the other one will be in Stark-Billings County.

No changes have been announced for the make-up of judging teams. Rules regarding number of participants on a team and counties combining to make a judging team are still the same for the state 4-H judging contests.

Crop judging

Information will remain the same as last year. FFA is still planning a review of their event and since so many train with FFA; we will let that review happen before considering any adjustments in the 4-H contest. If you know of good sources for weed mounts or crop market factors, please share that information.

Meats Judging Contest Proposal

Dr. Robert Maddock introduced 4-H meats judging during the fall 4-H training and animal science training at the Western 4-H camp in Washburn. He is still working on how and when to best fit a contest into existing opportunities, however he has indicated that June is looking like the best time for the event.

State Crop Show

The state crop show is held as part of the North Dakota Winter Show. Please encourage 4-H youth in your county to participate in this event. There are separate 4-H, FFA, and open divisions. Top exhibits in each lot advance to the championship division. Now is the time to begin cleaning a sample – two quarts for most crops, one quart for small seed crops like flax, canola, alfalfa, etc. Wouldn’t it be great to have at least one sample from every county?

Help Solve Hunger in your Community!

North Dakota, as a Great Plains state, is not immune to poverty and food in-security issues. A report published by the Center for Rural Affairs at Lyons,

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – January 2013

Nebraska, cites that rural poverty is a significant issue in many areas of the plains states and one of the signs of living in poverty is food insecurity. This is particularly evident when one considers USDA’s definition of food insecurity as a “lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active healthy life for all household members or limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods”.

Join the ND Action Team for Invest an Acre

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation, an organization that strengthens food security for vulnerable populations at home and abroad, recently launched the Invest an Acre program – a collaboration that includes, ADM, Monsanto, and Feeding America. In partnership with Invest an Acre, 4-H will establish pilot projects with 4-H programs in five key states engaging thousands of 4-H members and volunteers in community-based food-security and hunger-relief projects.

The Center for 4-H Youth Development will engage youth, adults and communities in partnerships through mini grant applications for up to $1,000 through local Extension offices. A youth and adult ND Invest an Acre Action Team will help drive the project. Help involve 500 youth and 100 adult volunteers in community-based, culturally relevant food security/hunger relief projects, resulting in 10,000 hours of volunteer service in North Dakota! Join the Action Team today!

If you, an adult volunteer, or a youth you know would like to become a member of the ND Invest an Acre Action Team, please scan:Or go to http://tinyurl.com/NDInvestanAcre*Local Extension Agent will be notified of all applications from their county.

More information on the grant application will come soon!

New program information includes a FITA archery event was added to the spring match for seniors only. This is a pilot event and completes the 3 event archery match that is required in the national match. Air rifle will remain a 3 position match. The summer match is tentatively scheduled to be in Bismarck at the same locations as last year. The match will be all three shotgun events and field archery. The date is TBA in late August as we are waiting for the state shooting associations etc. and ranges to set their schedules.

New District Tournaments Indoor Archery 300

tournament on January 19 at the Burleigh County Extension Office. The divisions are bare bow and freestyle in the three age divisions. Bare bow is recurve and compound bows with no sights or release. Freestyle division is the use of sights on the bows in addition to a release with the compound bow. No magnified sights can be used. See attached sheet.

Please register using 4honline at https://www.4honline.com/Login.aspx?594E342E555B3F312A26310D.

Tournament limit is 100 and 4-H members only.

Volunteer Training

It is the plan that there will be locations within each district that hold one tournament a year. We are not limiting it to indoor matches or a single discipline. Those volunteers or staff interested in learning how to organize and manage a tournament can participate in a training session at the office on January 18 at 7:00 pm. and will work the tournament the next day.

The session will provide materials for planning a tournament and the tournament will allow the participants to experience the different job tasks so they can understand everyone’s roles. You do not have to be a certified instructor to work a tournament.

You can register for the training by emailing me at [email protected] by January 12. Cost is FREE.

If your county is interested in hosting a district tournament in the next year, please contact me.

Air Rifle Standing 60 shot

Ramsey County is planning an air rifle match on March 16 in Devils Lake. The match will be 60 shot standing. Equipment will be available to use. If enough participants request, we will have the shooting equipment such as shooting stands and rifles on site for the match. Request them from me or you can use one of Ramsey County air rifles for a small fee. (They are probably sighted in real good!)

Upcoming Trainings

There is an archery and air rifle training scheduled for Ramsey County on January 5. The two separate trainings will be run at the same time. This meets the requirement for recertification in these disciplines. If you want to increase your volunteer instructor base and share rides, this would be a good one to send them to. Contact Cindy Olson in Ramsey County at 701-662-7027 or [email protected] for more information.
