COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
Hi All,
First I want to thank John Hult for hosting and providing a wonderful location for our recent member's meeting. Wasn't that the most Heavenly Ham? John, you out-did yourself ! Nothing like something juicy and delicious to stick to your ribs besides dessert. Speaking of desserts, we won't soon be forgetting Jan's lip smacking "Sex- in-a-Pan" specialty.
Also, a big welcome to our new OSC member, Ross Martin. He is a local young adult and sails a Hobie Cat. During October and November he crewed on Ed Sims' 23' Hunter, "Point Blank", with Paul Straub and me. We wrote about Ed's "Point Blank's" great performance at Lake Monroe and on Lake Harris in our November Newsletter.
This month we did another race on Crescent Lake with the Crescent City Yacht Club around Bear Island. Ed and crew captured First Place and received the coveted Jameson Trophy (a bottle of 18 yr. old Jameson Irish Whiskey). If any of our members have never been to Crescent Lake, it is a must. The town is small and cozy and the folks friendly. Down by the public docks is the infamous "Three Bananas" bar and restaurant where the after-sailing activities take place. This year CCYC followed-up all that with a local barbecue party to which we were invited. With the recent time change, it was very dark when we departed for home, our coveted trophy still in tow ... unopened.
"OBRS" (Ocala Beer and Rafting Society ) is up front and in full swing this month of November.
First to note is our #3 (or was it to be #4?) Fall Series Race, I am beginning to lose count, but it was Saturday, November 16th, a sadly rainy and windless day. We ended up on Ed & Lynn's back porch adapting the race to the "# Whatever-Beer-Can-Regatta". The real race was postponed to the next day, Sunday, which soon became known as the "Wind-Nada-Regatta-Armada", as several vessels were pulled back to shore on another windless day. However, the event was redeemed by beer on the back porch!
The second "OBRS" item to note was a very successful non-sailing but closer to "rafting" event that took place on Saturday, November 23rd. Eight OSC members met at Juniper Springs N.P. for a kayaking/canoeing adventure down the 7.3 mile Juniper Creek. Those courageous and still surviving members were: Marc & Sally Melanson, Kathy Olbekson, Charlene Johnson, Mark & Bobbie Ciraco, Ross Martin, and yours truly, Art Twitchell. This run is very beautiful, challenging, and on the weekends extremely popular. One OBRS consideration is that the only beer drinking allowed is a!er the "rafting" is done and you are safely off the park premises.
Be sure to check out the December schedule that is posted in the Newsletter as this is a busy month and we know with the holidays there is much going on in all of our personal lives. Hope to see many of you at our Buccaneer Night on the 5th at Eaton's Beach, our last Fall Series Race on the 15th, and certainly our Annual Christmas Party at the Archibald's on December 14th.
Ed and crew will be off to another sailing weekend at Lake Monroe December 7th & 8th with his trusty "Point Blank". Fair Winds, Ed!
It may seem premature, but, "Have a Great Holiday Season, Blessed Merry Christmas, and a Very Happy New Year ! "! !! ! Your Commodore,! !
! ! Art Twitchell

A NOTE FROM THE VICE COMMODORE
The fall sailing series has one race left before it is complete. We will change the race schedule to December 15 at noon instead of Dec. 14th. This will help avoid a time conflict with our Christmas Party. We made a valiant attempt to race in November but both days had little or no wind, so we enjoyed the nectar of the Gods instead of sailing. I am positive that T.H.E. Admiral thought highly of our decision.
We completed our class on sailing rules, start sequence and flags in October. There has been some interest in a follow-up class with a focus on sail trim, boat balance, starting tactics, and race tactics. Please let me know if you are interested in this follow-up class.
The Lake Weir Invitational 2014 & Harpoon Nationals Championship will be held April 26-27 at the Kiwanis Beach on Lake Weir, so mark your Calendar. We will have a Spring
Series of races to help us prepare for our April Regatta. I will need your help again this year to make our Regatta the success it has been in the past.
Here is wishing you good sailing . . .

OSC MEETING MINUTES - NOVEMBER 21, 2013Location: John Hult’s Home ~ Ocala
Commodore Art Twitchell brought the meeting to order shortly after dinner.
Thanks to our gracious host, John Hult! We had a delicious ham dinner with some tasty soups, sides, salads, and many desserts!
Several guests were introduced and welcomed to the club. Guests included Jim and Lisa Edens from Gainesville. Jim has sailed his Nacra in a few of our races over the past couple of years. Ross Martin also joined us this evening. Ross is a student from CF, looking forward to eventually transferring to FSU. Ross is from Summerfield and sails a Hobie 16. He has also crewed with Ed Sims during several of the Fall Regatta’s around Central Florida. Welcome Jim, Lisa, and Ross ~ please join us again!
The 50/50 Raffle winners this evening were:• Lynn Barrett! Cash of $29• Mark Ciraco! OBRS Burgee• Jan Schumacher ! Sailing Book
Congratulations to the winners!
Wayne Birkenmeyer announced the upcoming Light Up Lake Weir Event sponsored by the Lake Weir Yacht Club on December 7, 2013. Registration for the Boat Parade is $25. The parade will begin at Carney Island at 5:30 PM, continuing along the north shore of Lake Weir to Gator Joe’s for judging, south along the eastern shore past the Lake Weir Yacht Club, and ending at Eaton’s Beach Sandbar & Grill on the south shore of the lake for a “Down the Hatch Party” at 7:30 PM.
Pat Birkenmeyer brought a bag full of large Ponderosa Lemons for the members to take home and enjoy. Thanks Pat!
The OSC Christmas Party plans were discussed. Skip and Lou Archibald are hosting the party on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 6:30 PM. Please bring a dish to share ~ all drinks will be provided. The dress is “holiday casual”. We will have an optional Chinese Gift Exchange. Those interested in participating should bring a wrapped gift ($20 gift) to put under the tree.
The final Fall Series Race is scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 4:00 PM. We may try to reschedule due to the Christmas Party that evening.
The Lake Monroe Sailing Association Kettle Cup Regatta is 12/7 - 12/8,2013. This Regatta is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.
Art Twitchell discussed potential upcoming activities:• Lake Harris Cruise to Restaurant• Craigcat Tour of Chain of Lakes• Chain of Lakes Cruise (Members Power Boats)
The club needs to discuss this further and schedule one of these activities after the holidays.
The location of the December Buccaneer Night on December 5, 2013 was discussed. First choice is Eaton’s Beach. They don’t take reservations, but Jan Schumacher will try to make arrangements. Second choice is Taverna Red in Summerfield.
The 2014 Lake Weir Invitational and 10th Harpoon Nationals Regatta is scheduled at Kiwanis Beach for the weekend of April 26, 2013. The Mug Race in Jacksonville is scheduled for the following weekend which will be convenient for our Jamaican sailing friends to participate in both events.
The OSC Meeting was adjourned and the OBRS Meeting was brought to order. Wayne Birkenmeyer has held the Gavel since April 2013. After talking with Steve Jaffess this evening he learned that Steve had a recent “gavel worthy” sailing excursion. Steve launched his sailboat on Lake Weir and began motoring over to Bird Island when he ran out of gas. His mast was down so he couldn’t sail the boat. After waving his arms and sending up flares, a fisherman spotted him and towed him in! The gavel award presentation will be at our next gathering. “Congratulations” Steve!
Art announced that he and some other OSC members are planning to kayak and canoe at Juniper Springs on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Please see Art if you are interested in joining in on the fun!
Respectfully Submitted,
Jan Schumacher ~ Secretary

OSC POT LUCK DINNER MEETING AT JOHN HULT’S HOME - NOVEMBER 21, 2013
Wortley Home for Girls in Jamaica
To all Ocala Sail Club Members,
Last summer when Ed, John, and myself went to Kingston, Jamaica we took a load of school supplies for the Wortley Home for Girls (orphanage). The orphanage takes in about 25 girls from about 3 - 17 years old. Rupert Bent, from the Jamaican sailing team, and his family, (going back several generations) have been donating to this cause for years. Ed, John, and myself have seen the orphanage and feel this is a very worthy cause. This year we will be sending a Christmas donation as well. I am humbly asking if you, the members, would like to, or be willing to add to the donation.
I'm not looking for any large cash donation ------ just a couple of dollars here or there. I am not trying to put any pressure on anyone, nor am I expecting anything ----- just opening up a door. If you feel the urge, it would be greatly appreciated by these girls. Please contact me, Paul @ 352-840-3062 or Ed @ 352-804-5876 if you have any questions. I will be most happy to field all questions. You can also read about the school on the internet.
I would like to send our donation off sometime next week. Thank you for your consideration.
Best Regards ~ Paul Straub
