Upon request by Hanoi city gov-ernment, Pastors Jacob and Jinggoy went on an exploratory trip to Ba Vi commune in the Ba Vi district. The city has heard HIF talking about Love Hanoi and in response asked us to help with the economic devel-opment of the poorest commune in the poorest district of Hanoi prov-ince. This commune consists of about 2500 people of which 100% are from the Dao ethnic minority.

We were first welcomed by the District People’s Committee, who then escorted us to the more distant commune. Bordered on the national park, much of their previous land has been annexed to the park. As a result only 70m2 per person is left for agricultural use. This is enough to grow vegetables and livestock for their own consumption, but leaves little to produce extra for sales. Res-idents live below the poverty line at only 500,000vnd per month.

The tribal people, in particular the women, have an inherited knowledge of herbal medicines. Now that much of the land has become

park land, it is illegal to harvest wild growing herbs. They need to start growing their own herbal farms, yet many plants need the ecosystem of the park to survive. Some cows, pigs and chickens are farmed for their own consump-tion. Yet, their frequent festivals require them to sacrifice too many animals, more than they would eat.

The director of ethnology at the district level presented the idea of building on the existing strengths of the community: to develop an eco-friendly commune producing herbs, preserving tribal culture, expanding husbandry, and creating an attractive spot for local eco-tourism. At the same time, they are requesting help with job creation by introducing production, businesses or factories to the area.

Because of the high unemploy-ment rate (300 out of the 950 able laborers), many end up leaving the region to look for work. Re-cently as many as 200 men crossed the border to China to find work. This often ends up in abuse or disappointment as prom-ises for work and pay are not kept.

We would like to assist this commune through cross-sector collaboration with gov’t, NGOs and businesses. If you are inter-ested in helping, please contact Pastor Jacob or Jinggoy directly.

YOU SHOULD USE AND SHARE THIS GREAT RESOURCE

“everyvietstudent.com” provides practical, helpful answers for students and for any adult who has questions or wants to learn more about the Chris-tian faith and Christian living.

“everystudent.com” provides the same content in English and gives you the links for 35 other languages in which it is available.

God uses mothers for the establishment and maintenance of human institutions in government and state, but primarily Chris-tian mothers are for the purpose of send-ing forth into a sinful world those who will become the salt of the earth and permeate the world with Christian idealism. Mothers are, or were meant to be, the chief soul-molders, character-constructors, God’s re-cruiting agents for the eternal realms of heaven.

On this day we honor in HIF all mothers, mothers-to-be, and all future mothers.
