Shall we dare to dream and hope for what we can not see clearly, but trust the yearnings planted in our hearts by our powerful, good, and loving God? Shall we not abide more hopefully by living God' dream with eyes wide open? Faithfully, Michael MICHAEL MOULDEN RECTOR

April 2014

My Dear Franciscan Friends,

Yes, finally, winter is finally giving way to spring though it has

done so rather begrudgingly. I write this on the day that I hope will

be the last time we see snow this season. In a similar way Lent

yields to Easter but only after going through the depths of Holy

Week.

The triad of liturgies, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good

Friday not only set the stage for the surprising event of Easter, but

also carry us deeply into the sacred heart of Jesus that is found in the

midst of human experience. The stories of God and humanity in-

separably entwined contain our mutual suffering, the relief of kind-

ness, surprising acts of bravery as well as the the forlorn experience of betrayal and rejection

While antagonists seem to overwhelm the stage, love, faith and hope take center stage and

transform the chaos of evil and misguided human decisions. Love triumphs over fear and

angst. Faith/trust provide the strength to follow a course seemingly created in the shadows of

the human mind with only evil intent. Yet the end of that journey is not quite what was envi-

sioned and forged in the darkness. Hope emerges brighter than ever shining with a glorious

majesty that only the powerful goodness of God could imagine. It bursts forth unencumbered

by tombs, and rocks and the misguided designs of death.

So my question about Holy Week and Easter is this, "How will we be transformed by en-

countering the glorious majesty of the Resurrection?"

Our daily lives lived hour by hour, moment by moment yearn for a transformation beyond

our ken and our limited imagination. Shall we dare to dream and hope for what we can not

see clearly, but trust the yearnings planted in our hearts by our powerful, good, and loving

God? Shall we not abide more hopefully by living God' dream with eyes wide open?

Faithfully,

Michael

Time & Talent Stewardship

We truly believe that Stewardship is a life orientation and not simply a

fundraising or volunteer recruitment campaign. Just as our gifts from God

never cease, nor should our thankfulness and responses only happen during

the fall. In our cycles of Stewardship, each Spring we set aside a time to

intentionally focus on the ways in which we are stewards of our time and

talent. Our time is a valuable commodity, as it is not a renewable resource.

Giving even a few hours a week can have a profound impact on the world

and will transform you as you serve.

Our focus this year will be on Prayer. On Palm Sunday, Fr. Robert will

focus the sermon on the topic of prayer as we enter Holy Week. The Stew-

ardship Committee invites you to, for the season of Easter, concentrate on

your prayer life. We hope that you will adopt or intensify your practice of daily prayer.

Start on Sunday, April 13, Prayer Pledge Cards will be available in the pews. If you will be mak-

ing a pledge to pray, please sign one of these cards and place it in the offertory plate in front of

the altar as you come up to receive Communion. More information about the Prayer Campaign

will be made available on Sunday, April 6. We hope that Franciscans of all ages will participate in

this commitment to prayer. If you have any questions, please contact any member of the Steward-

ship Committee: The Rev. Robert Black, Linda Allgood, Ross, Cox, Jane Anne Hayber, Brian

MacKenzie, Samuel Moss, Jim Tanner, or Susan Tysinger.

ROBERT BLACK ASSISTANT RECTOR

We invite you to join us at 7:30

am in the parking lot across the

street from the Greensboro Di-

ocesan Offices at 301 North Elm

Street on Good Friday, April

18. We will be doing the tradi-

tional Stations of Cross, stop-

ping at 14 locations along a 1.5

mile route that will finish at that

same parking lot. We will meet

rain or shine and free parking is

available in that lot for all those who are participating in this event. We expect the service to

last about one hour. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. Robert.

Youth Sunday will be May 18th! If you have a senior

graduating from high school or college, we would love to

acknowledge their accomplishments during the Worship

Service. Please contact Amanda at

[email protected] with their name, where

they are graduating from, and a brief description of their

future plans.

This year we will have TWO Mission Trips: one for Middle Schoolers,

and one for High Schoolers.

Due to Guilford County School schedules, the Middle

School Mission Trip has been slightly moved, and will be June 18th-

21st. This will be a locally focused mission experience. We will stay at

St. Mike's and serve our community, doing mission work with various

local organizations. Cost for this trip is TBD and will be announced soon.

We will need chaperones, please contact Amanda

at [email protected] to sign up for the trip as a student or as

a chaperone.

Our High School Mission Trip will be June 29-July 5th! This trip will be in partnership with the

High School students at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, NC. We will be going to

Glory Ridge, NC and working to repair and rebuild homes for those in need. For more informa-

tion on where we will be staying, please go to www.gloryridge.org. Cost for this trip is TBD and

will be announced soon. To sign up for this trip as either a student or a chaperone, please contact

Amanda at [email protected].

Vacation Bible School will be held August 4th-8th! From 9am-noon each day,

all children from PreK-5th grade are invited to participate. (Older youth are wel-

come to volunteer as helpers.) Our working title is "Welcomed by God: Come as

Strangers, Leave as Friends", and we will have Bible stories, music, games,

crafts, and FUN that all relates to this theme! Further registration details will be

available soon.

So far this year, St. Francis Outreach team has joined with the EYC by participating with time and

financial resources in Stop Hunger Now with Amanda’s leadership, and Backpack Beginnings com-

fort backpacks for troubled teens, which was spearheaded by Emily Moss. In addition, Outreach

provided some financial assistance to Backpack Beginnings when their warehouse suffered massive

loss of supplies during a flood earlier this year.

We have also provided support to the Alight Foundation for breast cancer services and Greensboro

Urban Ministry for their Winter Fund. We spent our February meeting primarily doing “Dream-

catching” for our ministry under the leadership of our Vestry liaison, Kris Cooke.

We are currently assisting Andrea Knupp with the Lenten offering of “Change-ing Lives” baby

bottle collection to raise funds for children receiving assistance from Family Services of the Pied-

mont. Millie Ronemus is leading the effort for the GUM Food Drive April 4th-5th.

Under consideration at this time is exploring a parish interest in doing a project with Habitat for

Humanity, assisting the Episcopal Farm Workers Ministry, and helping the Adult Center for Enrich-

ment and their services to seniors in need. At our April meeting, we will have Liz Seymour from

the Interactive Resource Center speak to us about their program, their needs, and how St. Francis

can be of assistance in this ministry to the homeless in our community.

Outreach welcomes any parishioners interested in reaching out to our greater community to join us.

We meet monthly on the 3rd Monday evening at 7:00pm in the Parish Library. Please contact Betty

Barry ([email protected]) 545-6946 for more information. We especially invite anyone inter-

ested in the work of the IRC to join us for our April meeting to hear our speaker.

YOUR ENERGY IS OUR FUEL!

The engine that drives St. Francis’ Outreach is our Annual Book

Sale, and your energy is the fuel that keeps it running. Each year,

parishioners’ hard work on the sale translates directly into money

to help sustain organizations such as Guilford Urban Ministry

Food Bank, Step-Up Ministry, Backpack Beginnings, Clara

House, and Stop Hunger Now. Outreach also supports EYC Mis-

sion Trips and Episcopal Relief and Development for emergency

needs in disaster areas.

We need all hands on deck to make this year’s sale a success.

There are eight great days to volunteer, May 3-10. Heavy lifters will be especially needed on

Saturday, May 3, and for cleanup on the afternoon of May 10. This year, we are asking volun-

teers to contact Lesley Cahalan at [email protected] or 336-207-2740.

Join the fun the night before the Book Sale for a special preview for St. Francis parishioners

only, May 7, 5-7:30 pm. Shop ahead of the crowds, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and wine, and visit

with your church friends. Free child care will be provided in St. Mike's. Suggested donation: $8

per person. Please contact Vara Cox at [email protected] or 545-4385 or Melinda Kimble at gus-

[email protected] or 707-7314 to volunteer for the preview party.

Look for specific days and times to volunteer in the Email Express and Announcements.

We will be walking again this year under the name Jane Stubbs and

Friends of St. Francis. The walk will be held on Saturday, May 17th.

11:00am to 11:00pm at Proehlific Park, 4517 Jessup Grove Road. Our

team is on ACS website: www.relayforlife.org/greensboronc

I would love for you to sign up as a team member and raise money or

ask that you make a donation or purchase luminaries in honor or mem-

ory of a family member or friend. You are welcome to do this online or

mail check payable to ACS/Relay For Life to me. You can get 3 lumi-

naries for $25 or 1 for $10. Thank you in advance for supporting this

great cause as we continue to make a difference in the fight against cancer. I am a 13 year Survi-

vor and we have many church members who are also survivors and several who lost the fight.
