Twenty One Today and Literate to Boot “One day I will find the right words,
and they will be simple.”
— Jack Kerouac
This year 2014, the Somerset Celebration
of Literature, has reached the age of
consent. We are 21! 21 and literate! This
Celebration of Words, The Write Stuff, is
a celebration of something very precious
in life; the liberation and empowerment
that come from being literate and hence
articulate. Stories in literature are the very
stuff of life. The writer creates and sets his
or her creation free to the world at large
for readers to engage with and create their
own stories. We then read and through
this process, are freed from the shackles
of convention and conformity, gain hope,
plan pathways for life and storm the
metaphorical barricades of our minds.
Reading changes us forever.
This year, the innovation of the Somerset
Literary Fund enables us to expose more
young minds to the beauty, mystery and
empowerment of words. The Fund enables
us to bring over 200 extra students from
regional areas to hear the likes of digital
guru, Tristan Bancks, gritty teen fiction
writers, A.J. Betts and Vikki Wakefield,
Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of
the Year (2005), Will Kostakis, confronting
writer Robin de Crespigny, international
writer, Shamini Flint and the well-known
and highly entertaining Peter FitzSimons.
None of this would have been possible
without the unstinting passion and
commitment of the Festival Committee,
parent volunteers, Somerset students
and the unequivocal support of the
Headmaster, Craig Bassingthwaighte
and the College Board. I welcome you to
our festival; we organise it but it belongs
to the community of the Gold Coast.
Enjoy the subtle but heady infusion
of The Write Stuff.

Tara Eglington is an Australian based author who loves Young Adult

tips and tricks for romance, taking on a life of her own as the creator
of the 'Find a Prince Program.' She's been so popular with readers that

Debbie S. Miller has lived in the Arctic all her life. A former teacher,
Debbie’s passion for nature inspired her to start writing nature books for
young readers, which fuse gentle narrative arcs with incredible facts about
the natural world. Some of her titles include: Are Trees Alive?, Survival
at 40° Below, and Survival at 40° Above, which was about the amazing
creatures of the Australian desert. To research the book, Debbie travelled
to the Simpson Desert with a team of scientists. Survival at 40° Above was
the winner of the US 2013 Outstanding Science Book for Children.
Juliet Marillier was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. She has worked as a
music teacher, opera singer and tax assessor, but is now a full-time writer.
Her historical fantasy novels for adult readers are published internationally
and have won a number of awards. Raven Flight is Juliet’s fourth novel for
young adult readers. Her first, Wildwood Dancing, won the 2006 Aurealis
Award for Best Fantasy Novel; and her second, Cybele’s Secret, won the
2008 Sir Julius Vogel Award, given to the best young adult novel.
Mark Pardoe was born in England but moved to Melbourne in 1996, when
he finally accepted that he had no chance of making it as either a soccer
star or a racing driver in his country of birth. After foolishly working in
some serious jobs like banking and telecommunications, he eventually
retrained as a primary school teacher in 2006. Mark currently lives in Perth
with his wife, Melissa, daughter, Sally, and dog, Jazz, as well as several
small unnamed geckos that seem to like it in their house. His books
include Not Bog Standard and Other Peculiar Stories and The Andy Flegg
Survival Guide to losing your dog, your dad and your dignity in 138 days.

Gabrielle Wang did not know she could write until she had a dream.
The next day she wrote it down and this became her first novel
The Garden of Empress Cassia. Now she is an award winning author
and illustrator whose stories are a blend of Chinese and Western
culture with a touch of fantasy. Her books are about ancient water
towns, ghost hunters, enchanted gardens, hidden monasteries,
fox spirits, kungfu fighters, pickpockets and mythical beasts. They
are about art and belonging and the meaning of home, about finding
strength from within. Gabrielle’s latest book is The Wishbird.
Since completing an architecture degree in 1995, Andrew Weldon
has been a regular contributor of cartoons to many major
newspapers and magazines. A review of his first collection of
cartoons I'm so sorry little man, I thought you were a hand-puppet
(Allen & Unwin, 2002) described Weldon as 'one of the country's
wittiest and sometimes darkest and most laconic cartoonists'.
Fiona Wood's first novel Six Impossible Things was shortlisted for the
2011 CBCA Book of the Year, Older Readers. In 2013 her second novel
Wildlife was longlisted for the Gold Inky Award, and shortlisted for the
Queensland Literary Award. Her books are scheduled for publication in
various countries, including the US, from later this year. Her third novel
Cloudwish will be out next year. Before writing YA fiction, Fiona worked
as a screenwriter for more than ten years. She lives in Melbourne.
Claire Zorn lives on the south coast of New South Wales with her
husband and two small children. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a
Post Graduate Diploma in writing. She is a music lover, retro furniture
collector and amateur swim-club enthusiast. She has just released her
first novel, The Sky So Heavy, a gripping story for Young Adult readers.
