ukraine: God works despite difficulties

Day camp at a comprehensive school only 10km away from the fighting.

“We are not discouraged, only limited,” this is how our co-workers in Eastern Ukraine describe their situation. In recent months they have been carrying out their ministry in difficult circumstances. How are they getting on? Here are some impressions:

Lena* in Eastern Ukraine says: “Despite the war-like conditions, the Lord blessed the Easter clubs with children and teenagers. The young generation heard the good news of the risen Christ in schools, boarding schools, hospitals and churches. The gospel should not be spread out of duty or in fear. The love of the Lord Jesus Christ encourages us to speak openly about salvation.”

Sascha: Presently we are holding Good News Clubs at our house, also our prayer meetings and the preparation of a team of young people to work alongside us. Schools and boarding schools are refusing us entry because of the war. Also there is some doubt about whether the summer camps will happen. We hope that it will be over soon…

Please pray that everything will return to normal soon and the work will continue even better than before.

latest news (middle of July): Lena continues to gather

children in the courts of her home. The GNC in the home of Sascha had to stop, however a 3-Day-Club took place just recently.

*For security reasons we had to change the names and could not give the name of places.

Moreover, it is required of stewards of the mysteries of God that they be found faithful. 1 Cor. 4:2

It always makes me happy to see or read how faithfully our fellow workers are carrying on their ministry.

There are three things which should characterise our faithfulness as Christians:

1. Faithfulness to our mission. As CEF, the Lord has commissioned us to bring the Gospel to children, to make them disciples and, where possible, to integrate them in a local church. We want to be faithful to this mission.

2. Faithfulness to the Gospel. Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day—not symbolically but bodily. We want to proclaim this faithfully.

3. Faithfulness in difficulties. We have an enemy, who wants to make our life and ministry as difficult as possible. Every Christian can testify about this to a greater or lesser extent. But the Lord is faithful to us! Therefore we also want to remain faithful in the face of each and every difficulty.

Thank you for your faithfulness!

Yours in Him

Small in stature

big in faithA mother, whose children attend

a preschool Good News Club® in Latvia, shared with our workers: “Our four-year old son and two-year old daughter were alone in the dark when the electricity went out. I overheard my daughter crying, ‘I’m afraid.’ Her brother responded: ‘Say after me, In God I trust; I shall not be afraid.’ She repeated Psalm 56:4 several times and stopped crying. Thank you for

teaching my children.”

Faithful service brings results

Since 1993 Helger und Ute Breidenmoser from CEF Rostock in East Germany have spent four to five weeks every summer at a camping site on the Baltic Sea. At the start it was hard. Every year they had to ask: “May we come again?” Also they had to pay a large amount to be on the camping site. But the children came. They enjoyed hearing the stories of Jesus and loved learning Bible verses by heart. The parents were more sceptical.

However the situation slowly changed. The Breidenmosers remember one family: “The first year the children were not allowed to come to our meetings. In the second year the parents allowed the children to come, in the third year the mother came to the craft evenings offered for the parents and gave us a rose as a goodbye present! Today the daughter of this family works for a mission.”

Meanwhile Helger and Ute were welcomed on the camping site. What they noticed: for 15 years they thought nothing was happening. However in the last four to five years they have seen clear changes. “We have been able to speak more clearly about matters of faith in personal discussions with the parents. This is encouraging!” One mother said: “Do you

really know how you have shaped us?” And we thought: “If you have been shaped by God, then that’s good.”

This year Helger is at the camping site until 15th August. Please pray that God brings many more campers to Christ and that His Word continues to work after the time at the campsite!

ministry on campgrounds is quite popular in the three German speaking countries (Germany, austria, switzerland). This photo shows ministry in Germany.

Around the world in 80 years! In 2017 CEF will celebrate its 80th anniversary. A big

aim is associated with this date. We would like to have started a functioning CEF work in every country of the world. At the moment CEF works in 188 countries. Please pray that we can also be regularly reaching children in the remaining nations. Many of these countries belong to the “closed countries”. But God can work miracles!

Here in Europe we had two countries without regular work until recently. With great joy we can announce that Sweden has been declared officially open by our International Headquarters. We currently have three workers there and a committed national board. A German missionary is preparing to work there. As Area Directors for North West Europe,

Roy and Ruth Harrison are leading the work in this transitional phase. Please pray for a country leader.

The second country is Bosnia and herzegovina. Sebastian and Georgina Edelmann, Area Directors for Central Europe, have already held several TCE-1 courses with a CEF team from Serbia and in May taught an TCE-2 course in a Bible school for the first time (TCE= Teaching Children Effectively). Bible correspondence course lessons and evangelistic books are printed. What we need now are volunteer and full time workers, as well as suitable people to form a national board. Please pray for workers for the harvest field of God among the children!

Graduates of the first TCe 2 course in Bosnia.

CEF Latvia has its own national office! thank you!For three years children and adults in many countries of the world have prayed and given. And now God has provided a

centrally located office to CEF of Latvia which is ready to move into, right next to a kindergarten. It offers enough space for several offices, training rooms and stock rooms. We have already moved in, even though the space needs to be better arranged using partitions. God has also already given the means for this. After a difficult time, when our material was spread about in several locations, now it is all in one place. We praise the Lord and also thank you for all your support!

The office is already well functioning, other parts still need to be made ready. ▼

r e n o v A t i o n SThe necessary renovaton work in

The oil tank room has to be renewed and sealed. For the preservation of the barn behind the house certain ailing timbers have to be replaced. Every gift (marked “Kilchzimmer renovation”), even if it is small, helps us a lot.

n e w s f r O m k i l c h z i m m e rWe are thankful that Sonja Ballou

(our cook) has returned safely from her time of deputation. She was able to meet old friends and make new ones. Please continue to pray for her health, she needs more physiotherapy on her foot.

Since June Jobina Dürrenberger-Quartel is helping the team with great commitment as part time worker in the laundry.
