Each listing can be found on the I Heart Austin Summer Fun Checklist for Kids, a free printable checklist that gives children the opportunity to earn prizes from local businesses to encourage them to stay active in the community during the summer months. New for this year is a choose-your-own-ticket-price model ranging from $1 to $3 per personyou choose the amount! This model not only allows for tickets to be purchased onlinein advance with reserved seat-ingbut also 100% of ticket sales will be donated to local nonprofits helping families. Now, families can have summer fun while also helping their commu-nities. Check your local Drafthouse for showtimes, and keep an eye out for special Kids Camp menu discounts. Kids Camp screenings are open to ages 3 and up. Please, no infants (parents, check out Baby Day screenings instead). All children must be accompanied by an adult. Our regular No Talking policy is still in effect, so noisy families might be asked to leave.

    The Austin Aquarium welcomes families to enjoy an immersive interactive experience in a family-friendly environment! Sea to believe as we connect children and families to the planet, ranging from our rainforests and deserts to the exotic species of the ocean. Family activities include hand-feeding sharks, stingrays, birds and tropical animals. Fun children activities include feeding and touching crocodiles, holding slithering snakes or even taking a selfie with one of our exotic large-breed birds. Watch jellyfish gently float and glow or admire families of seahorses playing and our Giant Pacific Octopus snack on crawfishfed by guests! The Aquarium offers multiple educational programs and activities for kids. A favorite childrens activity is our Morning Rounds for aspiring aquarists, or for those who just love animals.

    Austin Nature and Science Center2389 Stratford Dr., AustinThe ANSC provides hands-on educational exhibits and recreational activities that increase aware-ness and appreciation of the natural environment. Located on the western edge of Zilker Park, the Austin Nature and Science Center is dedicated to the exploration of the natural world.

    Austin Zoo10808 Rawhide Tr., AustinLocated on the southwest edge of Austin off of Highway 290 West and Circle Drive, Austin Zoo, whose mission is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education, is a pleasant

    Hill Country zoo where visitors from around the world can come to learn about animals close-up, spend some time outdoors getting exercise and have fun. There are currently over 350 animals, representing 100 different species set in 15 acres of land. Outside food and drinks permitted.

    Barnes & NobleVarious locationsBarnes and Noble offers storytimes several days each week including Friday nights, Saturdays and weekdays as well.

    Bartholomew Pool1800 E. 51st St., AustinThe newly rebuilt Bartholomew Pool opened last summer to a delighted crowd of eager Austinites. With water slides, lily pad separate kid-friendly swimming pools, lap lanes for serious swimmers, picnic benches, shade and plenty of space even during the crowded summer months, this is a great pool to cool off at on a hot summer day. The Bar-tholomew Splash Pad is located close by at 5200 Berkman Drive.

    Barton Creek Greenbelt3755 S. Capital of Texas Hwy., AustinBarton Creek Greenbelt is an urban oasis. Its trails provide opportunity for biking, running, rock climbing, swimming and hiking. There are multiple access points.

    Barton Springs Pool2201 Barton Springs Rd., AustinWithin Zilker Parks 358 acres lies one of the crown jewels of Austin: Barton Springs Pool. The pool itself measures 3 acres in size, and is fed from under-ground springs with an average temperature of 68 to 70 degrees, ideal for year-round swimming. Barton Springs attracts a diverse crowd of people and has seen record-setting numbers of visitors nearing 800,000 in recent years. The Springs serves as home to the endangered Barton Springs Salamander, and is listed as a federally protected

  • habitat. The pool is closed to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday to allow for the vigorous and methodical cleaning methods required to help maintain the pool area for wildlife and guests alike. Depths of the pool range from 0 to 18 feet with sur-rounding grassy areas for patrons to lounge upon. Adjacent to the pool bathhouse is Splash!, an edu-cational exhibit where patrons can learn about the history and biology of Barton Springs.

    BatsAnn Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, AustinEvery summer night, hundreds of people gather to see the worlds largest urban bat colony emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in down-town Austin. With up to 1.5 million bats spiraling into the summer skies, this population is considered the largest urban bat colony in North America. Call the Bat Hotline for emergence times: (512) 327-9721, x 3.

    Blanton Museum of Art200 E. Martin Luther King Dr., AustinThe Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin is one of the foremost university art museums in the country and has the largest and most comprehensive collection of art in Central Texas. The Blantons permanent collection of more than 17,000 works is recognized for its European paintings, an encyclopedic collection of prints and drawings and modern and contemporary American and Latin American art.

    Boardwalk at Lady Bird LakeSee Austin from a different perspective with a walk on the Boardwalk. The options are endless: snap pics of downtown, look for turtles, ride your bike, rent a canoe, have a churro, search for song lyrics on bronze belts or take your pooch on a leisurely stroll.

    BookPeople603 N. Lamar Blvd., AustinBookPeople is one of the largest independent book-stores in America. With a full calendar of events including author book signings, weekly storytimes and more, there is something for everyone at this gem of a store. Theres a huge space in the Chil-drens Department with tunnels and nice spaces for the kids to read their books. BookPeople also has a nice cafe on the first level with a wide selection of drinks and snacks.

    Capital Metro MetroRailCapital MetroRail offers comfortable service Mon-day through Saturday between Leander and down-town Austin and from Lakeline to downtown on Saturday.   • Cedar Rock Railroad3005 CR 175, LeanderThe Cedar Rock Railroad is a fantastic quarter-scale train that takes passengers on a relaxing 1.3-mile ride through the nature-filled fields and forests of the park: unforgettable fun for all ages! The Rail-road is closed on Mondays, open Tuesday through Sunday year-round, weather permitting. Train rides depart every half hour on the :15 and :45. There are picnic tables, snacks and drinks available in the Shady Oak Junction Depot and a play area with a pretend train for the kiddos.

    Central Market North4001 N. Lamar Blvd., AustinCentral Market has a large playscape, live music Thursdays through Sundays on their caf deck, and kids eat free on Tuesday! The cafe is a great place to have breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks and even gelato while the kids enjoy exploring and playing outside.

    Cinemark Movie TheatersVarious locationsKids can enjoy 10 fun films throughout the summer for just $1 per show or $5 for 10 shows with Cinemarks Summer Movie Clubhouse.

    Deep Eddy Pool401 Deep Eddy Ave., AustinLike Barton Springs, Deep Eddy is a freshwater swimming pool. The water is cleaned out and re-placed with fresh well water every day on alternat-ing sides of the pool, so there is one new pool to jump into each day. The 600,000-gallon concrete pool is surrounded by grass, trees and a beauti-ful mural telling the history behind the pool. The pool, established in 1915, is the oldest swimming pool in Texas that began as a swimming hole in the Colorado River. Eilers Park is a small park that is adjacent and provides some fun if you need a few minutes of playtime before or after your swim. Also, Deep Eddy hosts Splash Movies during the summer.

    Dick Nichols Park8011 Beckett Rd., AustinThis district park is a neighborhood favorite. There is a kids water-play area and hike and bike trails that wander throughout.

    Drive-Through ZoosNatural Bridge Wildlife RanchExotic Resort ZooWant to feel as though you are on the savannas of Africa, without packing your suitcase? Visit a drive-through zoo in Central Texas and see exotic ani-mals as you never have before.

    Emma Long Park1600 City Park Rd., Austin Set within an oak and juniper forest bordering Lake Austin, Emma Long is one the largest parks in Austin. The main part of the park, adjacent to the lake, features a well-equipped and well-used boat dock, as well as several swimming areas. This is an incredibly popular summer spot, despite entry and camping fees.

    Elisabet Ney Museum304 E. 44th St., AustinThe Elisabet Ney Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places based on its significance as the former American studio of Elisabet Ney. The museum is also a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservations Historic Artists Homes and Studios program. Unless otherwise indicated, the portraits and personal memorabilia in the Elisabet Ney Museum from the Elisabet Ney Collection of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center of the University of Texas at Austin.

    LBJ Library and Museum2313 Red River St., AustinSituated on The University of Texas campus, the library houses President Johnsons documents from his political career and the museum contains many thousands of objects donated by the President and Mrs. Johnson, their family and others. The collection is very diverse, with a little something for everyone. Kids will enjoy the replica of the Oval Office. Be sure to walk around the grounds, visiting the trees and fountain on the south side of the library.

The large gated park includes a variety of play op-portunities designed to stimulate and encourage the development of several skill sets such as gross and fine motor skills, social interaction, sense of discovery, creativity and strengthening exercises. The site is heavily shaded and tucked away from busy streets. The Brushy Creek Regional Trail will be accessible from the park and will connect Redbud Lane/CR122 to A.W. Grimes Blvd. and connects into the Greater Lake Creek Trail System.

Tickets are available for purchase at the box office and all movies start at 10 a.m. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Will Rogers Institute.

    Springwoods Park9117 Anderson Mill Rd., AustinLocated in Northwest Austin and surrounded by large oak trees producing ample shade for the hottest summer day, Springwoods Park offers two separate play structuresone for older kids and one for younger ones. There is a sand volleyball court, a pavilion available to rent or to picnic at if it isnt reserved, trails and plenty of space to roam.

    Texas Capitol1100 Congress Ave., AustinThe Texas Capitol is an extraordi-nary example of late 19th century public architecture and is widely rec-ognized as one of the nations most distinguished state capitols. It was placed on the Na-tional Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 for its significant contribution to American history. The Capitol anchors the north-ern periphery of the downtown commercial district and commands a sweeping view towards the Colo-rado River from its southern faade. Free Capitol tours are conducted daily beginning in the Capitol South Foyer. Tours are generally 3040 minutes in length.

    Texas Memorial Museum2400 Trinity St., AustinExhibits at the Texas Memorial Museum focus on dinosaurs and fossils, Texas wildlife, and gems and minerals. There is also a working Paleontology Lab where visitors can interact with scientists as they prepare fossil finds. Spotlighted in the exhibits are spectacular specimens found in Texas, including the largest flying creature ever foundthe Texas Ptero-saur, with a wingspan of nearly 40 feetand the 30-foot mosasaur that swam the shallow sea that once covered most of the state.

    Texas Military Forces Museum2200 W. 35th St., AustinThe 45,000-square foot Texas Military Forces Mu-seum explores the history of the Lone Star States militia and volunteer forces from 1823 to 1903 when Congress created the National Guard. From 1903 to the present, the museum tells the story of the Texas Army and Air National Guard, as well as the Texas

  • State Guard, in both peacetime and wartime. The museum displays dozens of tanks, armored person-nel carriers, self-propelled guns, trucks, Jeeps, heli-copters, jet fighters, observation aircraft and towed artillery pieces. Permanent exhibits utilize uniforms, weapons, equipment, personal items, film, music, photographs, battle dioramas and realistic full-scale environments to tell the story of the Texas Military Forces in the battles at home and around the world.

    The Thinkery1830 Simond Ave., AustinThe Thinkery is Austins home for why and how. Its a place where science and families play side by side and where people connect with ideas by do-ing, making and experiencing.     UT TowerThe Texas Union, 2247 Guadalupe St., Austin The 307-foot tall UT Austin Tower was completed in 1937. Through the years, the Tower has served as the Universitys most distinguishing landmark. The observation deck of the Tower offers a spectacular view of the campus and the Austin area in all di-rections. The observation deck has recently been remodeled and reopened to the public for the first time in nearly three decades. As a part of the reno-vation process, persons with disabilities now also have access to this monumental view. You can take a 45-minute self-guided tour of the Tower escorted by student guides. Patrons ride an elevator to the 27th floor and then take three short flights of stairs to the observation deck. An auxiliary elevator is available to guests with restricted mobility.

    UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum605 Robert E. Lee Rd., AustinThe UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum repre-sents so much that is quintessentially Austin: su-

    perb art casually set in a shady garden of native Texas plants, a natural oasis near Barton Springs and only blocks from the heart of an urban capital city. Originally containing small ponds used by sol-diers to practice fly casting during the late 1930s and 1940s, these 4 acres were then forgotten for the next four decades, lost under dewberry vines and illicit dumping. In 1991, the property was trans-formed into a sculpture garden for the dozens of bronze and stone pieces given to the city of Austin by noted 20th century American sculptor, Charles Umlauf. The xeriscape garden, with its waterfall and streams muffling the sounds of traffic, gives visitors a peaceful place in which to contemplate the sculptures or their own thoughts. Children can explore the grounds with Sculpture Safaris in hand. Free during the summer.

    Veloway4900 La Crosse Ave., AustinThe Veloway is southwest Austins first trail exclu-sively for bicycles and rollerblading. Located on more than 100 acres in the Slaughter Creek Met-ropolitan Park, the Veloway is a 3.1-mile, paved asphalt loop 23 feet wide. Important note: No foot traffic! If your kids cant ride the Veloway without you walking alongside them, they arent ready for it. Come back when you all can be on either bikes or rollerblades. Everyone goes in a one-way, clock-wise direction. Helmets are highly recommended and required for kids. The trail can be accessed from Loop 1 Mopac, about a mile south of Slaugh-ter Lane, or from Bowie High School on Slaughter during nonschool hours. Reminder: Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
