Parents, It’s that time! It’s time for your child’s next project of the year. February is Black History Month. We consider it a necessity for our children to be aware of and educated about influential Americans in our history. There are many significant historical figures in African American History, and we would like our children to be aware of some of the contributions they have made. Therefore, during this year’s Black History Month each student will complete a Book of Black History Project! Each child will create a book. Each student will choose 3 Inventions, 2 Important Individuals, and 1 Important Event to include in their book. (The students will choose these from a list that will be provided on our website.) All books must also include a Glossary that contains at least 10 words, an About the Author page, and a page listing all the resources used in order to complete the project. In order to ensure prompt completion of the project, there will be weekly deadlines. Your Weekly Deadlines are as Follows: • Choose Your 3, 2, 1 (and begin your research)– due Friday, February 6, 2015 The students will need to go to our class website this week. Click the “Black History Project Link” and follow the instructions for selecting your topics on your project. Whatever you select will be what you research and include in your book.

o Don’t forget: Each book must include 3 Inventions, 2 Important People, and 1 Significant Event in History.

• Bring in Research on all your Topics (due Friday, February 13, 2015) Your research should include: 3 - Inventions: • Inventor (include an explanation about the inventor, tell about any other inventions this inventor may have had, how many patents

did the inventor have) • The purpose or use of the invention. • Why this invention is significant. • A picture that goes along with the invention. • If available include a picture of the inventor 2 - Important People in History: • The person’s name, date of birth, and include date of death if he/she is no longer living. • Share information about the person’s youth. (Tell where they were from, how they were raised, what schools they went to, any

significant event you learned about their childhood.) • Share important information about the individual’s significance, and why they are important to Black History. (What did they do, or

are they doing, that makes them important for us to learn about today?) • Include a picture of the individual. 1 - Significant Event in History: • The name of your important event • When and Where the event took place • What happened, and the significance of this event. • Include at least 3 pictures to accompany this important event

• Bring in a hand written copy of your glossary list (with definitions), and your “About the Author” Paragraph (due Friday, February 20, 2015)

o Glossary: as you research there should be some new and important words you learn. Your project should include a glossary of no less than ten words that appear in your book. The glossary should be in alphabetical order, the words should be defined, and you should include where the word can be found within the book.

o About the Author: Your book will end with a paragraph about you, the author, so that the reader is familiar with the genius behind the written work. On the final project this page should also include a picture of you to be placed on this page.

• Bring in Your Final Project Book: (FINAL PROJECT AND PRESENTATION-Due March 2, 2015) Be as creative as you want to be in creating your book. I look forward to seeing how informative and creative each individual book will be. Make sure everything you researched is included. If any part of your book is handwritten in must be legible and neat. The final page of your book will be a list of resources used. Any website, book, or encyclopedia you use to complete this project should be listed on the very last page of your book. Title this page: Book of Black History Resources List. (ALL INFORMATION COMPLETED throughout the month MUST BE INCLUDED in the FINAL PROJECT.)

The FINAL PROJECT is due on Monday, MARCH 2, 2015. Parents, we do encourage assistance on your part in the completion of this assignment, but the final product should be something that shows your child’s creativity, participation, and easy for him/her to present to his/her classmates. If you have any questions, concerns, or needs about your child’s project feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time. Thank you in advance for your time and considerations. We are EXICITED to see what your creative minds will bring to life.
