college for kids program requirements

This is a complete list of College for Kids classes running from June through August 2015. All classes are being registered on a first-come, first-serve basis as class size is limited. Preregistration will close on June 30, 2015.

CANCELED CLASSES, CHANGES, & REFUNDS: Pre-registration is required as courses will be canceled if there are insufficient numbers to present the courses. The College reserves the right to cancel any course before the first class due to low enroll-ment. The college also reserves the right to change instructors. The registration fee will be refunded ONLY if a class is canceled.

BEHAVIOR: Students are expected to behave in a mature fashion while on cam-pus and off-site locations. Disruptive behavior may result in a stu-dent being asked to leave the program and the campus or off-site location.

TRANSPORTATION:For security purposes, you will be required to accompany your child to and from the classroom. Classrooms are not open until time for class to start, so please do not drop off your son/daughter early. Chil-dren will need to be picked up immediately after class ends. Please plan to arrive early to pick up your child and be waiting for them outside the classroom door. You are welcome to stay in the building where your child’s class is, but we ask that you do not remain in the classroom.

4-H STEM CAMP (AGES 11-15)Beaufort County Community College is teaming up with the Beaufort County 4-H organization and Roanoke Christian Service Camp to present the College for Kids S.T.E.M. camp. During this camp, the participants will learn about forensic biology, lab technology, engineering, rocket propulsion, archery, cooking chemistry, and ro-botics. This co-op camp will be instructed by representatives from each of the orga-nizations and will help expand the participant’s knowledge involving the fields of science, physics, and engineering. Instructors for the 4-H STEM Camp include Louise Hinsley, Erin Massie, Erica Schatz, Justin Rose, and Ethan Coltrain. Class is limited to 15 participants.

ART! BE CREATIVE! (Ages 9-14)This class will concentrate on the art of Henri Matisse. Participants will focus on his painting themes and styles while also work-ing on projects involving his cut paper col-lage. Late in life, he designed a chapel which used his cut paper style as the basis for his design. The participants will see how his art influenced his life and gain a perspective on how art can be used outside of the studio while jumping into various artistic projects. Participants will need to bring with them an over-sized t-shirt that will be personal-ized and used as a smock. The instructor for this camp is John Lohman, Art Teacher. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

THE ART OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION (Ages 14-17)Explore various areas of photography as you learn the techniques to create images with visual impact. We will take an in depth look at the fundamentals necessary for craft amazing images! These seminars will consist of a mixture of video instruction (in class), class room instruction, question and answer and hands-on learning. The instructor for this class is ASAP Photography of Greenville, NC. Class size is limited to 14 participants.

AVIATION HISTORY, AEROSPACE INDUSTRY CAREERS, & AERODYNAMICS OF FLIGHT (Ages 12-15)Participants will learn about the history of aviation including balloons, gliders, and powered flight. Participants will learn about the science behind how airplanes take and sustain flight and how the designs of aircraft have changed throughout history. Participants will also learn about careers in the aerospace industry, proper life-skills for getting a job, and how to prepare now for a career in the aviation field. The in-structor for this class is Alvin Powell of the Beaufort County Police Activities League. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

BEE KEEPING (Ages 10 and up)Bees are a vital natural state resource and perform a key part in our environmental and agricultural ecosystems. In this class, participants will learn the background be-hind beekeeping and the impact that bees have in our daily lives while also working alongside each other to build a hive for a colony of bees. These hives will work to create a habitat for this colony and will be placed at a determined location within Beaufort County. The participants will be able to witness the installation of their hive and gain a better understanding of the role it will play. The instructor for this class is Tom Garcia of the Beaufort County Beekeepers. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

BEGINNING SPANISH (Ages 11-13)Learn basic conversational Spanish in this week long class that can help you to put words together in sentences so that you can engage others in casual conversation! The instructor for this class is Ben Correa. Class size is limited to 16 participants.

BOATING SAFETY (Ages 13 and up)Learn to skipper a boat with confidence. America’s Boating Course (ABC) will cover the basics of what you need to know to take to the water. This course will cover basic boating Safety, equipment, rules of the road weather, and incorporate the Boating Guide for North Carolina. This course satisfies the requirement for safety training for boaters under the age of 26. The course will be presented by the US Power Squad-ron. Each participating student must purchase a book costing $40 for this class. There will be a registration deadline of July 6th to allow for books to be ordered, shipped, and received. The instructor of this class is the United States Sail and Power Squadron. There is no limit of class size for this course.

WOODWORKING BASICS (Ages 10-13)Learn basic woodworking skills while building creative projects including a Wash-er Game, miniature catapult, and a custom Mason Jar Candy Dispenser. This class will inspire participants to broaden their minds to the possibilities of woodworking while teaching them basic skills that can be used in any project. The instructor of this class is David Dixon, Carpentry teacher. Class size is limited to 16 participants.

CPR/FIRST AID (Ages 13-18)This course will cover the information and skills required to obtain certification through the American Heart Association. Students will learn basic first aid skills in addition to CPR and use an automated external defibrillator. The instructor for this class is Billy Respass, EMT Coordinator for Beaufort County Community College. Class size is limited to 10 students.

GOOGLE COMPUTER SCIENCE FIRST® CO-OP WITH FRIENDS

(Ages 9 and up)The CO-OP Camp with Friends will teach the participants how to work together in teams to create projects, games, and programs using Google’s Computer Science First® interface. Teams will create digital, interactive, stories, multiplayer games, code sequences, and will even learn basics of digital marketing. The instructor for this class is Ginny Boyer. Class size is limited to 24 participants.

GOOGLE COMPUTER SCIENCE FIRST® GAME DESIGN (Ages 9 and up)In the Google Computer Science First® Game Design class, participants will learn how to create various types of digital games using the Google Computer Sci-ence First® and Scratch® programming interfaces. Games styles include racing, mazes, platform, strategy, and more! Learn how games like Super Mario®, An-gry Birds®, and Flappy Bird® were created in this fun and interactive class! The instructor for this class is Ginny Boyer. Class size is limited to 24 participants.

KAYAKING (Ages 13-16)Beaufort County is home to some of North Carolina’s most beautiful ecosystems and natural scenery. Because of that, kayaking is a calming and enjoyable pastime for those native to this area. BCCC will be partnering with the Moore Aquatic and Fit-ness Center to provide a kayaking class for youth that will help them to learn how to safely handle themselves in a kayak through the beautiful Pamlico River. Partici-pants will learn how to safely enter and exit a kayak at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center in their pool before graduating to kayaking in the Pamlico River. The instruc-tor for this class is Justin Rose, Coordinator of Special Projects with Beaufort County Community College. Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center will also be providing two lifeguard-trained instructors. Instructors will possess CPR/First Responder, ACA Kay-ak Instructor, and Lifeguard certifications. Participants must be able to proficiently swim on their own in order to register and participate and will be swim-tested at the beginning of camp. River kayaking will depend on weather conditions.Class size is limited to 15 participants.

KNITTING (Ages 12-16)As you make a simple project you will also learn how relaxing it is to knit! Begin by learning the basic stitches of knit and purl. Then learn to gather materials, cast-

on, cast-off, increase and decrease, and choose appropriate needles. After this class students will be eager to move on to more complex projects. The instructor for this class is Elaine Roberson, Family & Consumer Science teacher at Washington High School. Students will need to have one pair of knitting needles (preferably bam-boo). These can be purchased at Michael’s Craft store in Greenville or ordered from Amazon. Two skeins of Peaches and Cream four-ply cotton yarn (instructor uses Wal-Mart brand) to bring with them on the first day of class.Class size is limited to seven participants.

HEALTHY & CREATIVE COOKING (Ages 10-14)In this delicious and creative class, participants will learn basic safety and sanitation regarding food preparation in the home and out. Participants will learn how to navigate the kitchen and learn reci-pes for quiche and omelets, loaded baked potato soup, chicken tenders, and mac-n-cheese. If that is not enough, participants will also learn how to bake sweet treats like cupcakes which add a delicious end to any meal. The instructor for this course is Yolanda Collins, Family & Consumer Science teacher at Wash-ington High School. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

HUNTER SAFETY (Ages 10 and up)BCCC will be hosting a Hunter Safety Course. The Hunter Education Program of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission provides hunter education courses throughout the year in every county. More than a firearm safety course, instruction includes eth-ics and responsibility, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting and tree stand safety. All first-time license buyers must complete this course. This course is provided by the NC Wildlife Re-sources Commission. There will be one hour given for lunch. The instructor for this course is a representative from the NC Hunter Education Commission. Class size is limited to 30 participants.

MATH REFRESHER CAMP (Ages 8-10)Participants will enjoy math in a relaxed, fun, atmosphere while being engaged in interactive and stimulating math activities. Participants will practice fractions in-cluding fundamental operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, equality, and geometric shapes throughout the class. The instructor for this class is Doris Fletcher, Math Instructional Coach with Beaufort County Schools. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

READING & WRITING REFRESHER CAMP (Ages 8-11)In this class, participants will enjoy great literature in a relaxed, fun, atmosphere while being engaged in thoughtful discussion about each piece that they explore. Participants will also practice beginning cursive while moving into intermediate cursive throughout the class. The instructors for this class include Nancy Rowe and Nancy Phipps, Reading Instructional Coaches with Beaufort County Schools. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

SBC B.O.O.T. (BUSINESS OWNERS OF TOMORROW) CAMP (Ages13-17)Beaufort County Community College and the Small Business Center presents the SBC B.O.O.T. (Business Owners of Tomorrow) Camp. This camp is designed for stu-dents ages 13-16 wishing to learn about running their own businesses in a fun, and interactive environment. Participants will work in teams to develop a business idea and understand what is involved in developing a successful business plan. By the end of the camp, participants will have developed a business concept, marketing ideas, and present their plans to their fellow entrepreneurs “Shark Tank” style! Par-ticipants will learn teamwork, community assessment, marketing, and some public speaking throughout the process. The instructor for this course is Lentz Stowe, Di-rector of the Small Business Center at Beaufort County Community College. Class size is limited to 15 participants.

SEWING FOR FUN—BEGINNER (Ages 10-12)This course will cover basic sewing techniques: measur-ing, cutting, stitching by hand, and machine. Students will make a custom pillow case and, time permitting, a project of their choice. Individual expression will be encouraged with each project. The instructor for this course is Linda Batchelor. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

SEWING FOR TWEENS & TEENS INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED SEWING (Ages 12-14)Students registering for this class must have had Beginning Sewing for Fun at BCCC previously or previous experience with sewing. This course will cover moderate sew-ing techniques: measuring, cutting, stitching by hand, and machine. Students will make a tote bag and, time permitting, a project of their choice. Individual expres-sion will be encouraged with each project. The instructor for the course is Linda Batchelor. An instructional fee of $7.00 will be accessed for each student to receive a sewing kit to be used during the class.Class size is limited to 12 participants.

SPORTS AND FITNESS (Ages 8-16)The Sports and Fitness camp will teach participants about fitness and healthy living through various sports, fitness activities, and self-defense training. The class will be split into two groups ranging from 8-12 which will focus on sports and fitness and 13-16 which will extend into weight training and self-defense techniques. As a result, participants will expand their knowledge of health and fitness in a way that is healthy and fun. BCCC will also be partnering with the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center to present this class. Instructors will include Ron Baldwin, Health and Fit-ness Instructor for Beaufort County Community College, Justin Rose, Coordinator of Special Projects for Beaufort County Community College, and Madison Crawley of Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center. Class size is limited to 12 participants.
