Recognition of Prior LearningYou may have previously worked either full or part time and this work may have involved some training.

The knowledge and skills you have acquired are measured against the equivalent units in your course and in some cases this may be used to gain recognition for part of the course you wish to study. To qualify, you must provide evidence at the time of application.

Working while you studyAs an international student on a student visa you are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight during your program and on an unlimited basis throughout your semester breaks.

You can earn $15 to $30 per hour depending on your skills and experience, however you should not rely on this money to pay for your tuition fees.

We recommend discussing potential work options with our Student Support Services team after you have started your course, so that they can assess your course commitments and workload.

Overseas Student Health CoverAll international students are required to have health insurance during their stay in Australia. The Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) plan assists in the payment of any medical and hospital care from the date of your arrival until the end of your stay as a student in Australia. This cover must be paid before a visa is issued and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) requires you purchase OSHC for the full duration of your student visa.

Airport transfer serviceTo guarantee the introduction to your study program with Careers Australia begins smoothly, we also offer an airport welcome service where you will be met and transported to your accommodation.

Please contact our Student Support Services team or refer to the International Student Handbook on our website for more information.

Student Visa requirements and obligations The Australian Government wants international students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding study experience and as such, Australian laws promote consumer protection and a quality education for students. As an international student on a student visa, you have certain responsibilities too, including satisfying student visa conditions, maintaining your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and maintaining satisfactory course progress.

Currency of QualificationsTraining package qualifications are reviewed on 3-5 yearly cycles by industry skills councils. When a new qualification is released, Registered Training Organisations have twelve (12) months to transition existing students from superseded qualifications and commence enrolment in new qualifications. When a new training package is released, Careers Australia commences redevelopment of its programs to ensure delivery of the most current qualification within six months of its release. For up to date information on the currency of a qualification, see www.training.gov.au

BankingThe Australian banking system is one of the safest and most advanced in the world and setting up your bank accounts as soon as possible after arriving here can make life a lot easier.

Banking hours are generally 9:30am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday and 9:30am to 5pm on Fridays, although some banks offer extended hours and some are open on Saturday mornings. Major credit cards are accepted including VISA, Mastercard and (to a lesser extent) AMEX and Diners Club Card. Most banks will also change foreign currency to Australian dollars.

CAREERSAUSTRALIA.EDU.AU 15

Page 16: 2015 International Prospectus - Careers Australia

When to arriveYou are strongly advised to arrive at least one week before the commencement of your course as you will need enough time to find your campus and become acquainted with your new surroundings. Your Letter of Offer will advise you when your course will start.

How much money should you bring with youUpon your arrival in Australia, you will need to have some Australian currency in case you need to make telephone calls or small purchases. It is recommended that you arrive with approximately AUD$300 to AUD$500 in cash, especially if you arrive over the weekend, when most of the banks are closed. You should avoid carrying large amounts of money and it is recommended that the rest of your money is in bank drafts or on a credit card or alternatively you can arrange to transfer funds electronically.

Bringing money into AustraliaWhen travelling to Australia, please be aware that if you are carrying a total of AUD$10,000 or more in cash of any currency, you must declare the money on your Incoming Passenger Card and if questioned advise Australian Customs officials upon your arrival. It is not an offence to bring this money into Australia, the offence is not declaring the money.

Changing money on arrivalThere are money changers (Bureau Exchanges) located at all international airports, but be aware that you may get a better rate in your home country.

AccommodationYou have three main accommodation options while studying at Careers Australia and our Student Support Services team can provide assistance with helping you choose from the following:

Share house or apartment

Students who are looking for privately owned accommodation can find rental properties listed with local real estate agents. You will need to apply for a lease contract that will last between 3 and 12 months. This type of accommodation is usually a share house where you will have your own bedroom and share the kitchen, bathroom and living areas with the other members of the house. Weekly rental costs range from $150 to $250 per person depending on the location and the facilities of the house or apartment. You can find a list of available accommodation posted on the notice board at the reception area of each campus.

Homestay

For many students living away from home for the first time, this choice of accommodation provides the perfect way to learn about the Australian lifestyle and customs while living in a family environment. The definition of a homestay family can differ widely from a family consisting of a mother, father and children to a single mother or father without children. Some meals may be provided. In many Australian families both parents may also work and may not be at home when you are. Costs approx $200 – $250 per week. Careers Australia uses the services of an accommodation agency to provide homestays and will help facilitate contact between you and the agency.

Hostel

The third option is private, off-campus hostels that offer short-term or long-term accommodation in either a private or shared room. Prices usually range from $50 to $100 per night depending on the services available. Student Support Services can offer more information.

Our Student Support Services teamCareers Australia takes great care to ensure that the transition from your home to you living and studying in Australia is as smooth as possible and that you have access to support services that will make your time in Australia an enjoyable and productive one. Services we provide include:

Obtaining a refundIf a student believes they are entitled to a refund they must lodge a Refund Application Form (available on the Careers Australia website or from Student Support Services) to the Careers Australia Finance Officer ([email protected]) within 28 business days of the date of termination of enrolment. If a refund amount is due, this will be paid within 30 business days of the notice.

Applications to withdraw must be submitted in writing stating the reason for withdrawal and any other necessary documentation (e.g. a medical certificate) and must be submitted through the student’s educational representative.

Fees incurred by Careers Australia due to incorrect bank account details being supplied either by a student or an agent will be deducted from the refund payment.

Compulsory additional costs are payable by the student as and when they are required and in all cases are excluded from refund amounts due.

Additional fees such as the Overseas Student Health Cover, text books and uniform costs may also apply. Some courses will require students to apply for a Federal Police Clearance or purchase additional items such as tools, uniforms or textbooks at their own expense. Fees are subject to change without notice. Please contact Careers Australia at the time of enrolment to confirm correct fees.

Careers Australia is a member of an approved Tuition Assurance Scheme and as such, all fees paid in advance by students are guaranteed only in the event of closure or discontinuation of a business. All withdrawals initiated by students are exempt from this fee guarantee and Careers Australia is entitled to withhold amounts in accordance with the refund policy below. Students are reminded that enrolment in any course incurs the full tuition fee for that course.

●+ If the student is offshore and the Visa has been rejected, all prepaid tuition fees less the enrolment fee will be refunded upon presentation of the rejection letter from DIBP or the embassy and a completed refund application form.

●+ If the student is onshore and the Visa has been rejected or the student is withdrawing from studies after commencing the course, a cancellation fee may be applicable.

●+ If the student is onshore and has commenced the course and the Visa is rejected, the student is not entitled to a refund of the tuition fees.

●+ Once a course/study period has commenced there are no refunds of course/study period fees.

●+ Where a student withdraws from a course/study period before completion, no refund is applicable. Careers Australia may at its discretion issue a non-transferable credit for the remainder of the course/study period fees.

●+ Cancellation in writing at least 28 business days prior to the original course start date attracts a full refund of tuition fees less enrolment fee.

●+ Cancellation in writing less than 28 business days prior to the original course start date but before the actual start date attracts a refund of tuition fees less enrolment fee and a cancellation fee of 20% of the paid tuition fees.

●+ Refunds will be made within 30 business days of the written advice being received.

●+ No refunds will be given to students who are expelled for unacceptable behaviour or non-compliance with Visa conditions.

●+ There are no refunds for public holidays or days the student is absent, due to sickness or any other reason.

●+ It is a course requirement that all fees as invoiced must be paid in full; failure to do so will result in exclusion from class, cancellation of enrolment and withholding of results.

●+ In the case of a student needing to return home urgently once the student has commenced, the remainder of their course fees may be suspended at the Training Centre’s discretion. Fees already paid will be held until the student recommences studying.

●+ Careers Australia reserves the right to alter timetables and class locations without notice. Careers Australia reserves the right to cancel, terminate or defer courses without notice. If any course is cancelled or deferred and does not start on the agreed starting day, or is started but terminated before it is completed for whatever reason, Careers Australia will refund all course money after the default day in accordance with the provisions of sections 27 and 29 of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000. In the case of Careers Australia not being able to offer a course, students are covered by the Provisions of the ESOS Act 2000 and the ESOS Regulations 2001.

●+ Full-time students are required to attend all scheduled classes and activities in class time and maintain academic progression. A student whose academic progression is not satisfactory, (less than 50% within a study period or fails the same unit twice), may risk course termination. No refund will be provided in this instance.

●+ Careers Australia adheres to regulations for attendance as prescribed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, (DIBP). Students in Australia on a Student Visa must therefore maintain a minimum attendance rate as outlined in their course requirement.

●+ Careers Australia reserves the right to suspend or withdraw all its services if the student’s conduct disrupts the normal operation of classes. In this case no fee will be refunded.

●+ Any refund will be paid by Careers Australia to the person or entity that originally paid the course fee and where possible in the same currency in which the fees were paid. Tuition fees are not transferable to another person or institution.

●+ The student must agree to indemnify Careers Australia and/or its staff from any responsibility and/or claim for any possible injury, damage or loss during attendance at any Careers Australia program or activity arranged by Careers Australia.

●+ This agreement does not remove the right to take further action under Australia’s Consumer Protection laws. The Careers Australia dispute resolution processes do not circumscribe the student’s rights to pursue other legal remedies.
