PAL Putters Every Monday morning, except long weekends, the Pal Golf Group meets at beautiful Southside Golf course at 8 AM for an enjoyable nine holes of golf and coffee in the clubhouse after. This is not a league where scores need to be kept, but rather a fun outing to meet and make new friends. If you are interested come join us for some great socializing and a walk in the park, sometimes spoiled by a little white ball. You can register by calling Bert at (204) 253-2857 or email him at [email protected]

The Waterfall and Hosta gardens at King’s Park are maintained by PAL (55+) volunteers. The team of volunteers would like to thank the many people who helped with the spring planting. The co-operation of the park crew who lent a hand with the water tank and transportation to the gardens was very much appreciated.

There is weeding to be done throughout the summer. If you have a few hours to spare and like gardening, give Ruth a call 204-269-1903.

A small commitment makes a big difference.

PAL Pedallers

The bicycling group is into its third year. Our rides start at the Richmond Kings Community Centre every Wednesday at 10am. This year we have gone on 7 rides of between 22 and 28 km each and we end back at the RKCC. We have had between 19 to 27 riders each time. The routes are varied allowing us to explore as much territory as possible. We have visited Ft Whyte Alive, the Floodway control structure, the Trappist Monastery Ruins, St Vital Park, Esprit-des-Bois trail, Southdale, and Waverley West. We are fortunate that there are many trails to enjoy. Last season in 22 rides, we collectively rode 6887 kms. This is equivalent to a one-way ride coast-to-coast across Canada. This year we have already accumulated 3730 kms during our 5 rides. For more information, contact [email protected] Stan Croall

Watch for a Pickleball Announcement soon!

Ticket to Ride; summer fun in the city Alanna Jones Exec. Director

You’ve been there once before and it was nothing short of an adventure; from Woodstock to the Civil Rights movements, from the Beatles to MLK Jr., lasers and video games, Johnny Carson, Spiderman, Marilyn Monroe, JFK ,Vietnam, James Bond, Polaroids, instant replay, Andy Warhol, 60 minutes and the moon landing, to name just a few of the most iconic moments, individuals and movements of the 1960’s. PAL is preparing to launch back to the Sixties at our fifth annual Picnic at the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday August 25 from 11:30 am - 3:00 pm with a 60’s theme including groovy tunes, 60‘s trivia, plenty of tie-dye and much much more. Responding to suggestions from past guests, we will be starting earlier this year and there will be burgers and hot dogs, chips and drinks available for purchase for lunch. So come early and enjoy some food and fun with your PALs before the program begins at 1 pm. Registration will be open from 11:30 - 1:00 pm and will be partially closed during the show. So come early to complete your registration and membership renewal and find a good spot for the entertainment, beginning at 1:00 pm. We will once again have a special guest MC as well as program demos and a 60’s theme musical or theatrical performance of some kind (TBD). We are looking for ways to expand the intergenerational aspect of the event and would like to invite you

to get your grandchildren involved with you this year. We are looking for responsible teens and children who would like to lead some 60‘s themed craft activities and games or who may be interested in being a part of the show (any musical grandchildren out there?). If your grandchild is interested, please contact Alanna Jones for more information, at 204-930-6931. All student volunteers will receive a Volunteer Certificate which they may be able to use if they need volunteer credit for their school. The Dufresne raffle will take place at the end of the picnic. Please pick up a book or

two (or more!) of tickets soon and support YOUR organization. PAL is a member-driven organization - we NEED your support! Tickets are only $5 and the prize is a beautiful new leather sofa and love seat from Dufresne. Thank you in advance for your support! Lastly, we are planning to do a Flea Market fundraiser at the picnic this year. If you are down-sizing or de-cluttering, please consider donating your gently used items to PAL at this year’s picnic. All items must come priced and in good condition - just bring them with you when you show up at the event. Our planning team could use a few more people to help lighten the load of the many tasks that go into planning an event like this. If you are interested in getting involved (it is fun - we are going to be doing some ti-dyeing soon), please call Alanna Jones at 204-903-6931. True to the era the event promises to be very colorful, engaging, laid back and fun with lots of opportunities to interact with your PALs and your memories as we journey back to rediscover some groovy tunes and trippy times! We look forward to chillin’ with ya - see you there.

Life on earth is expensive, but at least you get a free trip around the sun once a year.

Calling all PAL (55+) members

Prospective members, are welcome too. Encourage a friend to join and enter your name in the ’Refer a Friend’ box for the draw to be made at the picnic in August. A world of opportunities for new friends, new experiences and just plain ‘helpin’ out’ awaits.

The Annual Meeting could not happen on June 11th because of a lack of quorum (56 members) present. It is re-scheduled for June 25th at noon. The PAL board is a ‘working’ board; in other words they each have other responsibilities besides that of directorship. They work hard; it takes lots of behind-the-scenes tasks to maintain PAL, charitable status (forms to fill), programs (liaising), communication (at that computer every day), governance ( law makers), staying afloat ( an adding machine?), fundraising (begging), a new home search (bureaucracy), and planning ( how many meetings this month?). Let’s fill the room for the AGM on June 25th so the question of quorum isn’t even a concern….then stay on for the Still Bloomin’ Garden Club’s last presentation before the summer break. They have a great program planned….two presentations, silent auction, and ice cream and cake! editor

Bury a 2 L pop bottle to the neck for deep watering ie tomato plants. Planting tomatoes with a teaspoon of epson salts provides the magnesium they need.

A patio free of wasps: Cut a cucumber, place in an aluminum plate; set 2 plates around the patio. A scent is given off that drives wasps away.

Slurpees were invented by the owner of Dairy Queen, by accident, in the late 1950’s. His soda fountain broke down so he put bottles of pop in the freezer...and forgot about them. The first slurpee in Canada was poured in Calgary in 1969!

2015 Spring PAL Fundraising Dinner Report Linda Rzeszutek

On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, PAL held its third annual Fundraising Dinner at the Manitoba Institute of Trades & Technology. The dinner was completely sold out with 170 tickets sold, 165 dinners prepared, and 160 guests attending the event. The amount raised from the dinner was approximately $7,200, which will be added to the PAL Building Fund for a future home for our membership. We were very pleased to have had Tom Milroy, local radio host, as our emcee, and the Prairie Song Birds, as the evening’s entertainment, delighted the guests with many old-time favourites. We also received great reviews on the buffet dinner prepared by Chef Louis and his students in the MITT Culinary Arts Program. As for the wait staff, we were well served by the MITT Hospitality Program students. A thank-you is extended to our dedicated Dinner Committee who met every two weeks during the long cold winter months to plan this event. We had a lot of fun and worked so well together as a team – brainstorming and putting our ideas into action! Some of us are actually missing our Wednesday afternoon planning sessions in the meeting room at Smitty’s. And of course a huge thank-you to all the PAL staff and volunteers who helped out by designing the centerpieces, packaging the gift baskets, picking up prizes, delivering the baskets and other supplies to the hall, staffing the ticket tables, setting up the hall, assisting during the program, cleaning up at the end of the dinner, etc. We couldn’t have done any of this without them! Many thanks also go to the business community for supporting our 2015 Fundraising Dinner. We were able to put together 37 amazing gift baskets and we also had a very generous donation from the Duguid family – a special prize of a Karaoke machine with accessories (approx. value $500). And the fun hasn’t stopped – we are holding over one fantastic prize – a sofa and loveseat (approx. value $2,000) donated by Dufresne Furniture for a raffle that will count towards the total amount raised from the dinner. The draw for this prize will be at the August Picnic. Again, the money raised will go towards the PAL Building Fund. See the list of supporters on the next page.

Please refrain from wearing strong scented perfumes or colognes at PAL (55+) events. We want to respect our community, especially those with allergies.

PinPALs Bowling

The PinPALS Five-Pin Bowling program ended its fourth year of bowling on May 6th. It has been a banner year for this group in many ways. In this past year there have been many new bowlers; with those returning, attendance has increased

substantially. To describe PinPALS by the numbers is to say that an average of 35-40 people bowled weekly throughout the September-May season, with attendance reaching as high as 48 on occasion. We bowled a total of 32

weeks and, at three games per visit, that is 3450 individual games! One person scored well over 200 in 18 games during the year and another turned up a record score of 305. Numbers however, are only a small part of the story and in the big picture, our bowling scores are irrelevant. The central element that makes this program successful is the people - those who come out to the weekly games and those who take care of our needs. For the majority of us, Wednesday mornings are simply opportunities to get together, get a little exercise and have a little fun. Having patient and good-natured hosts like Don and Chad at Dakota Lanes adds much to the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere. They are always willing to accommodate our requests when we want to mark the high points in the year with food, fun and a little silliness. For our bowlers, success is not measured in numbers but in the community building that happens, the supportive environment that exists, the laughter and kibitzing that goes on, and the inspiration we receive from each other. Each of the 3450 games we played gave us a chance to get it right, get it wrong, stretch, bend, laugh, applaud our opponent and get to know each other a little better! At PinPALS, where age is just a number and physical limitations for some are overcome with the support of others, tolerance and respect are highly valued by all. The combination of these factors makes the weekly game something to look forward to and a privilege to organize. We will be back in September. If you think being a PinPAL is how you would like to spend your Wednesday mornings, watch for the fall program line-up and register with us. Dorothy Lachance, PinPALs Convener
