Summer Literacy Camp

About the campsIn 2011, IET organised a Mongolian language summer literacy camp for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since then, IET has organized eight other literacy camps.To ensure that these camps have an enduring impact, they assume a tripartite approach to sustainable skill enhancement by involving students, teachers, and parents or guardians as stakeholders.

With students, our aim has been to not only improve each child’s literacy, butjust as importantljust as importantly, to develop and inspire an appreciation of reading andwriting in both Mongolian and English. During the camp, the children participate in fun, educational activities, including making books, reading competitions, as well as writing and singing.

One of the goals of working with parents and guardians is to build their appreciation for the role and importance of education. The other key goal is to build their capacity to help their children with their study.

At the end of a camp, each child is presented with a group photo from the At the end of a camp, each child is presented with a group photo from the camp, and a box of new books for their own home library. Having a home library not only keeps children reading after the camp, but also often means that other children in the family and friends who could not attend the camp get to benefit from it.

Impact of the campThe most recent monitoring and evaluation report showed both children and parents enjoyed the summer camp project. “ [the children and parents] said they wanted to continue this project and take part in the summer reading camp again. Many of them expressed interest in the evaluation process and said they were pleased that IET and MEA had organized a very efficient and valuable project”. One of the children who participated in the 2013 camp said that as a result of the camp, “Reading a book becamethe 2013 camp said that as a result of the camp, “Reading a book became my favourite hobby”.

Cost and DonationThe number of children who can be sent to camps depends entirely on the funding we are able to raise, so every donation helps.The cost per child is US$300. This covers all food, accomodation, teachers fees, and supplies for five full days at the camp as well as evaluation. Fundsalso cover the cost of creating each student’s home library.
