WELCOME TO THE 2015 HOME BASE SYMPOSIUM! We are thrilled that you have joined us to participate in an event that will offer you hands-on courses, introduce you to new tools and initiatives, and give you the opportunity to network with users from across the state. Volunteers from the NCDPI and the LEAs have worked hard to assemble an informative symposium for you.

Last year’s focus was on the implementation of Home Base. This year’s theme (Taking the Next Step) and focus are geared toward moving forward with an emphasis on all Home Base resources. Yes, we want you to step outside your comfort zone and experiment with all the features Home Base has to offer.

The landscape of this and future symposiums is changing to fit a global Home Base audience. So please, take an opportunity to explore other areas outside your realm of expertise and see how we all fit together.

Keynote Speaker

JAMES FORD. NORTH CAROLINA TEACHER OF THE YEAR, 2014-2015

James Ford, a World History teacher at Garinger High School (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools) today is the 2014 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. In receiving the honor, Ford said, “I am excited to use this stage to fulfill my life’s work by doing just what I have been called to do – educate. My message to the general public is simple: It all begins with education. What we do every day may very well be the only profession every other profession is dependent upon.”

Ford calls his path to a career in teaching “long and unorthodox.” Before becoming a teacher, he pursued a career in print journalism and then served as a truancy intervention specialist and director of a teen center. He enjoyed his work with youth so much that he decided to become a teacher. Ford also recognizes the irony of his career choice since he considers himself to have been a “disengaged and apathetic student.” He now uses this experience to strengthen his teaching. “I remember all too well sitting in those desks, waiting to be challenged, engaged and stretched,” he said. “Now I sit in the seat of instruction, fueled by the motivation to be the teacher that I never had. Instead of teaching like I was most often taught, I spend a tremendous amount of energy daily planning, reflecting and experimenting, attempting to teach in a new way.”

Ford has spent the last four years out of his five-year career in education teaching World History to 9th graders at Garinger High. During his first year as an educator, he taught World History at Guilford High School in Rockford, Ill.

One of Ford’s guiding principles is to show his students how important education is to their future. “If my students have learned nothing else from me, my hope is that they understand the value that they all carry and the life-changing potential of quality education,” he said. “Unlike my former self, I now comprehend the true relevance of academics and just how much it relates to real life. My task is to impart this revelation to each and every one of my students, one lesson at a time.”

Ford is currently a Professional Learning Community leader and co-leader of the F.R.E.S.H. Peer Mentorship Program at Garinger High. He also helps to conduct schoolwide professional development on wiki pages and he conducted professional development in the Common Core State Standards for all World History teachers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In addition, Ford served on the Common Core State Standards World History Curriculum Writing Team and is co-chair of the annual Garinger Cultural Fair. Ford also is the director of ministries at Sanctuary Charlotte United Methodist Church, a board member for Behailu Academy, which provides arts experiences for urban youth, and a member of Mecklenburg Ministries and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

He has received several awards including the 2013 Southwest Region Teacher of the Year, 2013 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Teacher of the Year, 2013 Central Secondary Zone Teacher of the Year, and the 2013 Garinger High School Teacher of the Year.

He graduated from Illinois State University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. In 2009, he received a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Rockford College in Ill. Ford is currently working towards earning a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Wingate University.

GUEST SPEAKERS

JUNE ST. CLAIR ATKINSON, STATE SUPERINTENDENT

June St. Clair Atkinson was elected as the North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction in November 2004, re-elected in 2008, and re-elected for a third term in 2012. Dr. Atkinson is North Carolina’s first woman elected to this position. She heads the NC Department of Public Instruction, an agency which she served for nearly 34 years as a chief consultant and director in the areas of business education, career and technical education, and instructional services. As a former business education teacher, Atkinson has been involved in instruction and curriculum development throughout her career. She is past president of the National Business Education Association, Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools that Work, and the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium. Atkinson is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa and was inducted into East Carolina University’s College of Education Educator Hall of Fame in 2008. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Radford University in 1969, a Master’s degree in Vocational and Technical Education from Virginia Tech in 1974, and a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from North Carolina State University in 1996.

MICHAEL NICOLAIDES, CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER

Michael A. Nicolaides became the Chief Information Officer of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in March, 2014. Prior to coming to NCDPI, Nicolaides led the Information Technology department of Virginia Beach City Public Schools where his team was responsible for student information systems, enterprise applications and the IT infrastructure for the 87,000 IT users of the school district. Previously, he was vice president for Information Systems for Orbit Satellite Television and Radio Network in Cyprus, Italy and the Middle East.

As Chief Information Officer, Nicolaides leads several divisions of the Department including Business Technology, Student information Systems, Technical Architecture and Quality Assurance, IT Infrastructure and IT Security. His role encompasses internal NCDPI technology services, as well as services to local school districts and charter schools across the state. He also represents the Department in various national and state boards and associations.

Nicolaides is a graduate of Old Dominion University and holds two bachelor of science degrees, one in Computer Science and one in Electrical Engineering, and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

ROSALYN GALLOWAY, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

Rosalyn Galloway became the director of the Student Information System after serving as the implementation lead for the PowerSchool conversion. Prior to coming to NCDPI, she was the NC WISE coordinator for Asheville City Schools and served as an NCDPI contractor for the NC WISE Wave 3 deployment.

She began her career in state government in 1984 where she worked in alumni information systems for the University of North Carolina at Asheville and Western Carolina University. In addition to working in state government, she spent several years working in graduate medical education where she was the assistant operations manager at Mountain Area Health Education Center and then the Sr. Network Manager at Schneider-Electric/Square D company.

Rosalyn is a graduate of Montreat College with a degree in Business Administration and is also an alumna of the NC Education Policy Fellowship Program (NCEPFP).

SEED is the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s (NCDPI) effort to track, monitor, and share information for the transfer of students who cross state lines.
