So you’ve been duped by a dishonest contractor and lost hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars intended for your dream remodeling project. Maybe you’re too embarrassed to tell anyone. Maybe you don’t know if there’s an agency that takes such reports.

You could file a report with your local police or sheriff’s department. But if it has to do with a construction contractor or tradesperson, make sure you also file a complaint with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I).

Stepping forward could benefit you and prevent other consumers from sharing your fate! If you report it to L&I, the department may assign an inspector to the case and cite the contractor with a civil infraction or recommend the prosecutor file criminal charges. Once you speak with L&I staff, you can learn the options you may have to resolve your issue with the contractor.

It’s easy to file a report. Go to www.Lni.wa.gov/Fraud or call 1-888-811-5974 and choose option 1.Consider the case of more than seven Vancouver-area homeowners who felt they were cheated by a paving company. They filed complaints with L&I, and spoke

with L&I construction compliance inspectors and an L&I investigator.

L&I submitted the investigation to the Washington Attorney General’s Office, which charged the Vancouver man with unregistered contracting, doing business without workers’ compensation insurance and failing to report or pay workers’ comp premiums. The case is pending.

Of course, the best strategy is to avoid problems in the first place. Hiring a registered contractor is a good start. The state requires contractors to register with L&I. The department confirms that they have a business license, liability insurance and bond, which gives homeowners some monetary recourse if something goes wrong.

Unregistered contractors often have no bond or liability insurance and fail to provide workers’ comp insurance for their employees. It’s a risky combination that leaves homeowners financially vulnerable if workers are injured on their property or the contractor does shoddy work. Learn how to protect yourself at www.ProtectMyHome.net.

SPECIALTY NURSERY ASSOCIATION“The Latest in Kiwifruit,” “Classy Conifers” & Fabulous Form and Foliage”

Members of the Specialty Nursery Association will impart their plant wisdom through their presentations at the show. Bob “Kiwi Bob” Glanzman, owner of The Puget Sound Kiwi Company, will teach you the secrets of successfully growing kiwifruit in the Puget Sound area in his power point presentation “The Latest in Kiwifruit The fuzzy skinned green Kiwifruit is just one of over 65 species of climbing vines in the Genus Actinidia. Many of its relatives produce smooth-skinned edible fruits that are easy to grow in the Puget Sound Region, with several species producing striking ornamental foliage for the home landscape! Learn about the many colors, flavors, foliage, get tips on growing, plus the latest developments in the amazing Actinidia Genus.

Larry and Bethany Lael, owners of Lael’s Moon Garden Nursery, have two power point presentations for showgoers. Lael’s Moon Garden practices gardening as an art form and many of the photos in the presentations are from their display and test garden. In “Classy Conifers,” you’ll see that not all conifers are huge, dark green trees; many selections are dwarf, offer bright color, seasonal changes, and have a great variety of textures. Conifers also provide many artistic pruning options. This presentation will introduce you to some of the best conifers that can dress up the garden year around.

Flowers are beautiful but fleeting. In “Fabulous Form and Foliage,” you’ll discover the plants that are showy for much longer than flowers. This presentation by Lael’s Moon Garden Nursery shows artistic possibilities for plant form and foliage to provide year-round beauty and interest in your garden.

TACOMA ROSE SOCIETY“New Roses for 2015,” “Taking the Mystery Out of Pruning Your Roses,” “Diseases of Roses” & “Garden Insects-It’s a Strange World Out There”

Knowledgeable members of the Tacoma Rose Society will be on hand to share their expertise on roses. Frank Gatto, owner of Raft Island Roses in Gig Harbor, Washington, has spent over 25 years studying, hybridizing and growing an inventory of about 6,000 roses each year. In his presentation, “New Roses for 2015,” you’ll see outstanding pictures of the best roses that have been selected for our diverse microclimates in the Puget Sound and learn which roses will be in commerce in 2015. Bruce Lind has mastered all aspects of rose culture throughout his many years of experience. With his presentation, “Taking the Mystery out of Pruning Your Roses,” you will learn the rudiments of pruning different types of roses—when to prune, why to prune, how much to prune and even where to cut each cane. Come and learn the newest practices to take the mystery out of pruning roses.

John Moe, a Master Rosarian, will examine the major divisions of diseases that are trying to destroy our roses in his presentation “Diseases of Roses. Through clear up-close photos, he will show us what damage these diseases can cause and how to help prevent and treat the diseased areas when they do occur. Gain new knowledge on recognition and prevention techniques so that you can grow healthier roses. Gracie Baker, also a very accomplished Master Rosarian, will show us photos of some of the most damaging insects in the garden in her presentation “Garden Insects--It’s a Strange World Out There.” These insects destroy all matter of plant material - not

just roses. Gracie will lead us down the correct path and impart understanding on how to best keep these gnarly critters at bay.

SHOW FEATURES

Rachel Kate, “HGTV’s Design Star” finalist and recurring guest on “Rehab Addict,” will spotlight the hottest D.Y.I. trends at Show .

With appearances Friday, January 23 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, January 24 at noon, Rachel previews the hottest interior design trends for 2015: creating light and bright rooms with rustic accents, arched windows and doors, and ceramic faux-wood floor and wall tiles.

Her presentations are full of tips and visual examples of Do-It-Yourself projects using basic household items and products easily purchased by any homeowner.

Kate is known to television audiences as a finalist on the seventh season of HGTV’s popular “Design Star” series. During the season, Kate was declared winner of the first two episodes, including the iconic “white room challenge,” in which designers are given 15 hours to transform a bare room using only a few cans of paint and objects that can be purchased (on a tight budget) from a home and garden store.

She also appeared on season four of HGTV’s “Rehab

Addict” with Nicole Curtis, who buys houses that others consider beyond repair, transforming them into model homes.

Rachel combines her knowledge of textiles, manufacturing and design to create colorful lines of bedding and home goods. Her designs include decorative wallpaper and fun children’s bedding, which includes quirky, punk rock jungle animals and bright and stylish fashion girl accessories.

She has created a line of handbags and has also designed furniture and event settings, as well as a line of couture wedding gowns. More information about Rachel Kate and her designs, as well as a new organic baby line, can be found at www.rachelkate.com.

Rachel will be speaking on the following days:

New materials and appliances—both beautiful and functional—are major features for 2015. Adding to the fun: visiting chefs will be “at work” with cooking demonstrations periodically each day of the show in the state-of-the-art “Contemporary Design” kitchen within the multi-faceted display.

Sponsored by Tri State Appliances, the spacious, idea-generating exhibit showcases the latest generation of appliances from BlueStar (ranges), Liebherr (refrigeration), U-Line (under counter refrigeration) and Prizer Hoods (luxury hoods).

The display highlights upcoming trends for kitchens, including satin and honed horizontal countertop finishes, (minimizing glare when working in the kitchen or sitting at the bar); paneled front appliances, stained cabinets; white-painted cabinets rather than dark woods; and gloss finishes found on the vertical backsplash or cabinetry. The “Traditional Design” kitchen display features antique white painted upper cabinets with seeded glass doors with earthy light-toned Corian countertops. Completing the look is a BlueStar French door gas oven, stainless steel chimney hood, stainless steel French door refrigerator, and toe kick cabinets for a more freestanding furniture look.

The “Transitional Design” kitchen blends gray recessed panel cabinetry with the speckled gray and warm tones of Pental Orissa quartz countertops. Adding a “wow factor” to the modern kitchen is a Royal Purple range and hood. Other features include dark wood floating shelves and a Liebherr 48” wide wood paneled front refrigerator/freezer--with tip-up cabinetry overhead.

Site of the cooking demos, the “Contemporary Design” kitchen spotlights a cooking island with modern iron supports and high gloss, flat paneled doors. Space-saving Tri State Appliances include a 36” wide under-counter French door paneled refrigerator, and two 24” wide paneled refrigerator drawers.

The Puget Sound chapter of the NKBA is one of more than 70 chapters and over 40,000 members throughout the United States and Canada. It is the only trade association dedicated exclusively to the kitchen and bath industry.

New varieties of plants-and some old favorites-will be on display and for sale in the popular “Plant Sale” at the 2015 Tacoma Home & Garden Show®. Combining bargains with diverse offerings, this popular show attraction is presented by Lael’s Moon Garden and Tapestry Garden and Farm. With thousands of colorful and interesting plants to choose from, gardeners can discover rare and unusual perennials, Japanese maples, dwarf conifers, and ornamental shrubs.

Representatives from Lael’s Moon Garden and Tapestry Garden and Farm will be on hand to answer questions about the plants they offer for sale.

Lael’s Moon Garden will spotlight many of the over 1,000 varieties of plants at their Rochester, WA

location, including ornamental shrubs, edibles and selected perennials (some of which are rare native and non-native). The nursery is a great source for hardy outdoor plants and offers one of the largest selections of these varieties in the area.

Tapestry Garden and Farm of Olympia is a small family-owned farm and specialty nursery, and will have an on-site inventory of locally grown plants—many grown right on their farm. Also on sale: garden art and other hand-crafted items by local artists.

Two spectacular gardens, created by Marenakos Rock Center and Olympic Landscape, showcase techniques and plant varieties that are both beautiful and inspirational.

As showgoers enter the show, they’ll encounter new “All-Wheel Drive” vehicles from Western Washington Toyota Dealers perched upon rocks and boulders in an imaginative garden display created by Marenakos of Issaquah. Transforming the Tacoma Dome lobby into a Pacific-Northwest forest setting, the Toyota display is surrounded by alpine plants and fir trees, and includes a water feature, meandering stone pathway, and outdoor lighting that underscores the liberal use of plants and stones.

Marenakos, one of the oldest and largest stone suppliers in

the Northwest, also creates the ideal setting for the “Northwest Lifestyle.” Working with members of the Washington Association of Landscaping Professionals (WALP) and Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association (WSNLA), the 6,000 square-foot garden display spotlights a rustic cabin getaway with stone lanterns and stairs, an abundance of all-season

Northwest plantings, and a tranquil water feature amidst a backdrop of stone boulders.

Casey’s Landscaping, Mark the Pond Guy, Nature Perfect, Puget Sound Plants, and Windmill Gardens are also participating in the creation of these two impressive displays.

Olympic Landscape’s “Winter Secrets” garden display

features the colors of winter within a backyard retreat. Secrets to discover include a hidden sanctuary with a warming fire, bubbling urn and a reflection pond. Some of the garden’s many points of interest are a wooden fence and arbor, an inviting charcoal paver patio with delightful furniture, winter décor and other outdoor features that provide an outdoor living entertainment space.

Their Design Studio, which is tucked away in the display, offers showgoers garden inspiration with “Before” and “After” photos and examples of what can be created in your own backyard.
