A lthough American Eagle Instruments (AEI) opened its business doors in 1992, our history began in 1948 with the start of American Dental Manufacturing, a family-founded dental hand instrument company that made its mark by providing high quality, durable instruments to the dental profession. Through hard work, determination, and Montana pride, the company became a well known and respected manufacturer within the dental industry. The company grew to about 75 employees, many of whom forged careers to become some of the dental industry’s best journeymen instrument makers and sharpeners. American Dental was “the” quality dental instrument company.

In 1989, a competitor purchased American Dental Manufacturing and subsequently closed its doors in 1990. Rather than follow the buy-out company, a small group of tenacious and persevering crafts people joined forces in 1992 to form American Eagle Instruments. With engineering experience, unequaled skill, a goal to produce the highest quality dental instruments, and a “lead-not-follow” philosophy, American Eagle Instruments became reality.

Today, American Eagle Instruments has evolved to become the second largest manufacturer of dental hand instruments in North America. Based in Missoula, Montana, and employing over 80 crafts people, AEI remains an employee-owned company. We pride ourselves on providing the world’s fi nest quality dental hand instruments. Our focus remains on progressive, innovative dental products which allow the practitioner more effi cient processes with added ergonomic comfort.

AEI offers comprehensive lines of dental products designed for the forward thinking dental professional. Our product lines include di-agnostic, curettes, scalers, titanium implant instruments, composites, restorative, and cone socket instruments. AEI’s latest innovation is the unique Double Gracey™ instruments. Additionally, AEI provides associated dental products which include cassettes, sharpening systems, and endodontic instruments.

The Double Gracey instruments are two instruments combined in one. The face of Double Graceys are raised, creating two slightly sloped faces, approximately 110 degrees, measured from the terminal (lower) shank. This allows the operator to follow the Gracey technique, but with the economy of using universal curettes.

American Eagle Instruments also offers state-of-the-art surface engineering technology, featuring the XP® line of instruments. Our XP Technology instruments are fabricated using a patented surface engineering process that results in razor-sharp edges that start sharp and stay sharp longer than any carbon or stainless steel instruments available. XP Technology refl ects the latest innovation in dental hand instruments - providing you with instruments that require NO SHARPENING!

From product development to manufacturing, AEI employee-owners take extreme pride in their craftsmanship abilities. The AEI team possesses years of hands-on experience in the development and fabrication of dental instruments. We manufacture the highest quality instruments and hold ourselves to the highest standards. American Eagle Instruments offers our customers state-of-the-art dental products while still being progressive with the latest trends and requirements within the industry. We know our customers expect nothing less from a company that delivers “Better Dentistry by Design®”.

NO MORE SHARPENINGXP Technology is a patented surface engineering process. is technology is a proprietary process in which the metallurgical composition of the instrument’s surface is enhanced, giving it the properties of a much more durable material. is process allows us to put a much sharper edge onto a thinner blade, eliminating the time-consuming and imperfect process of sharpening your instruments.

The discovery of American Eagle’s XP Technology, 2 years ago, has revolutionized my daily working life. I am no longer spending time sharpening instruments. The thing that struck me immediately on handling the instruments was how feather light they are,

with a really solid grip but most of all their razor sharp tips and for how long they

remain sharp.

HOLDING THE INSTRUMENT BENEFITS

GUIDELINES:+

+

+

+

Barely hold the instrument using a light, “exploratory scaling” touch.

Shave through calculus using a few light strokes; do not fracture off calculus.

XP curettes and scalers are designed for scaling and root planing. Avoid using them on margins and overhangs.

Use less force, a lighter grip and a “shaving” or “exploratory” stroke.

Due to a thinner blade design, we do not recommend that you re-sharpen your XP instruments.

With proper use and maintenance, you can expect your XP instruments to last as long as your stainless steel instruments, without needing to re-sharpen.

+ A lighter touch aids in ergonomic hand protection and minimizes the risk of wrist/hand problems

+ A lighter touch increases instrument longevity

+ Less likely to burnish calculus with sharp blade

+ Saves time

+ Enhances patient comfort

+ Decreases scaling noise for auditory comfort

+ Less lateral pressure for scaling effi cacy

There was a small learning curve to realize that your grip and use changes compared to the way you use other instruments, but now that I have the hang of it, I can’t imagine ever using anything else!!

- Audi McKnelly, RDH, BS

tionAmerican Eagle Instruments® (AEI) has designed and manufactured XP® Technology instruments to be used repeatedly without

sharpening, while retaining their original shape and design for the useful life of the instrument. Although XP instruments can be cleaned and sterilized as any stainless steel instrument, the following suggestions will add longevity and increased performance to your XP Technology instruments.

Technique• Do practice care as these instruments have a sharper edge on a thinner blade.

• Do lightly scale away calculus with 4-6 strokes.

• Avoid fracturing away calculus.

• Avoid use on margins, overhangs, amalgam and composite.

Care• Do use cassettes for cleaning and storage.

• Do periodically test for sharpness with an AEI test stick.(American Eagle product code: AESASTS)

• Do Not sharpen the XP instruments

Cleaning• Do promptly place instruments in ultrasonic cleaner.

Standard recommended cleaning cycle is 20 minutes

• Do separate XP Technology instruments from all other instruments when cleaning/sterilizing. AEI recommends not combining dissimilar metals.

• Do use Ph balanced cleaners.

• Do always rinse with demineralized water a er ultrasonic cleaning.

• Do dry instruments before sterilization.

• Avoid use of Chlorine, Chloride, NaCl (Sodium Chloride), and Fluoride based solutions.

Sterilization• Do use autoclave sterilization and strictly follow unit manufacturer’s recommendations.

• Do allow for complete drying cycle.

Storing• Do thoroughly dry before storing.

e face of a Double Gracey is raised, thus creating two slightly sloped faces, approximately 110 degrees, measured from the terminal (lower) shank. e face and blade angles allow the practitioner to use Double Gracey instruments exactly how they would use traditional Gracey curettes—the terminal shank parallel to the tooth axis while performing the cleaning.

I used to use other brands but I felt that I had to sharpen them more often. I tried American Eagle’s Talon Tough and was amazed at the quality. Talon Tough starts sharp and stays just as sharp through repeated uses; they are strong, sharp, and light-weight instruments. I love them.

Designed for the hygienist who needs speed and perfection in those diffi cult anterior areas. e spoon is ideal for maxillary anterior cingulums with very diffi cult stain and calculus. It easily removes lower anterior lingual layers of calculus without the worry of snagging the thin lingual tissue. AEI’s patented sharpen-free XP® Technology maintains the factory shape throughout the life of the instrument.

I personally love the N1 from American Eagle. On patients, the N1 quickly removes the stain and thin calculus in the deep maxillary anterior cingulums. In the lower anterior areas where there is fi ne calculus at the CEJ, I can gently push the tissue back and remove the deposits without worry of snagging the tissue. Add the XP Technology,

I don’t have to worry about sharpening. It is defi nitely my “go to” instrument!

B l a c k j a c k ™ S C A L E RDesigned with the hygienist in mind, the Blackjack™ has a favorable blade design ideal for removing calculus and stains in all anterior and interproximal areas, as well as access throughout the posterior. American Eagle Instruments added 4mm to the shank to increase posterior access over other universal sickle scalers. In addition to stainless steel tips, the Blackjack is also manufactured with AEI’s patented sharpen-free XP® Technology for a blade that maintains its factory edge throughout the life of the instrument. Blackjack is available in EagleLite® resin or stainless steel handles. Plus, responding to repeated requests from dental hygienists throughout the world, American Eagle makes the Blackjack in Quik-Tip™ cone sockets in both Talon Tough™ stainless steel and sharpen-free XP Technology.

Quik-Tip™ Cone SocketsWhile in school, I received a small basic set of the XP instruments and saved them for boards. I am truly glad that I did, because my ultrasonic unit failed. I took my board exam with ONLY hand instruments. XP instruments, especially the Blackjack saved me! I passed WREB!

DR. BLACK’S INSTRUMENTNUMBERING FORMULADr. Black’s formula is based on the concept of instrument balance. Balance is established by keeping the blade of the instrument within 2mm of the long axis of the handle line. Proper balance is necessary to achieve optimal cutting with minimal eff ort.

Some instruments, such as margin trimmers, are constructed with a cutting edge at an angle other than a right angle. In these cases, a fourth number is placed in the formula that indicates the degree of angle of the cutting edge to the long axis of the handle.

Simply Sharp Eye LoupeAE SA MEL

1. Using the 10x magnifi cation loupe, inspect cutting edges for defects.

2. Pick your method, sharpen your instrument, and test (using the test stick).

3. Inspect again by using the magnifi cation loupe for proper angle, edge contour, and sharpness

(a sharp edge will not refl ect light).4. Repeat steps 2 and 3. Make adjustments as

needed until the desired edge is achieved.5. Always check your instruments to maintain

sharpness. We recommend a new instrument be kept for comparison.

METHOD 1

METHOD 2

e edge is visible while the stone is moved at the correct angulation, producing a sharp edge.

is method creates less clinician fatigue. However, maintaining the correct angle on the lateral edge may be more diffi cult, due to the inability to physically see the edge while moving the instrument.

AE SA STP (6 Pack)To maintain optimal cutting edges on your instruments, AEI recommends routine sharpness testing by use of a test stick.

To test for sharpness, simply stroke the test stick as you would during use. If the instrument “grabs” it is sharp; if it does not it should be resharpened or discarded.

We do not recommend sharpening XP® Technology instruments. Simply discard and replace.

Re-sharpening dental instruments can be inconvenient, tedious and challenging. However, it is important to maintain sharp edges on your curettes and scalers. Our Simply Sharp Kit is designed with your convenience in mind. e double-sided stone off ers you the choice of an extra-fi ne surface on one side and coarse grit on the other. e kit also includes a powerful 10x loupe for examining your edges. I have to tell you I am totally in love with these instruments!!! I

used the Double Gracey Posterior and the M23 Thin. Both instruments worked as if they were talking to each other!! If I could feel calculus but couldn’t reach it with one instrument, I certainly picked it up with the

other. Both of these instruments are feather-light; there was zero hand fatigue, AND the patient said he felt no discomfort as I worked. AND no tissue damage. I was in Heaven!!! Thank you, American Eagle!!!

See all XP Technology composite instruments listed on pages 42-44.

American Eagle Instruments® recently gave birth to a truly unique, bundled package of implant instruments that are designed for complete anterior and posterior implant surfaces.

American Eagle listens to needs and responds!

– Lynne Slim, RDH, MS

See all Implant Instruments listed on page 28.

– Susan Pannella Burzynski, RDH, MSEd, FAADH See pages 19 and 20 for information on the Double Gracey line

and page 24 for more information about the M23 Thin.

The American Eagle composite instruments are truly ideal for

my practice and my students. This series of instruments are designed specifi cally for perfect adaptation and access to all kinds of cavities, making excellent composite restorations in both the anterior and posterior.

NO MORE SHARPENINGXP Technology is a patented surface engineering process. Th is technology is a proprietary process in which the metallurgical composition of the instrument’s surface is enhanced, giving it the properties of a much more durable material. Th is process allows us to put a much sharper edge onto a thinner blade, eliminating the time-consuming and imperfect process of sharpening your instruments.

- Audi McKnelly, RDH, BS

sharpening, while retaining their original shape and design for the useful life of the instrument.

• Do always rinse with demineralized water aft er ultrasonic cleaning.

Th e face of a Double Gracey is raised, thus creating two slightly sloped faces, approximately 110 degrees, measured from the terminal (lower) shank. Th e face and blade angles allow the practitioner to use Double Gracey instruments exactly how they would use traditional Gracey curettes—the terminal shank parallel to the tooth axis while performing the cleaning.

I used to use other brands but I felt that I had to sharpen them more often. I tried American Eagle’s Talon Tough and was amazed at the quality. Talon Tough starts sharp and stays just as sharp through repeated uses; they are strong, sharp, and light-weight instruments. I love them.

Our Eagle Claw is designed with a thin fi nely-balanced contra-angled sickle scaler blade that easily adapts to posterior supragingival and interproximal areas. Our Eagle Talon complements the Claw by combining two popular anterior tips, the J3 (Jacquette) and the N128, into one innovative instrument. Th is thinly-tipped sickle scaler is ideal for removing calculus and stains in all anterior interproximal areas.

Designed for the hygienist who needs speed and perfection in those diffi cult anterior areas. Th e spoon is ideal for maxillary anterior cingulums with very diffi cult stain and calculus.

I developed these instruments to better serve my minimally invasive capabilities. I found that most instruments were too big to accommodate small laser preparations. These instruments are invaluable to those of us who practice Minimally Invasive Dentistry.

METHOD 1

METHOD 2

Th e edge is visible while the stone is moved at the correct angulation, producing a sharp edge.

Th is method creates less clinician fatigue. However, maintaining the correct angle on the lateral edge may be more diffi cult, due to the inability to physically see the edge while moving the instrument.

Test SticksAE SA STS (Single)

AE SA STP (6 Pack)To maintain optimal cutting edges on your instruments, AEI recommends routine sharpness testing by use of a test stick.

To test for sharpness, simply stroke the test stick as you would during use. If the instrument “grabs” it is sharp; if it does not it should be resharpened or discarded.

We do not recommend sharpening XP® Technology instruments. Simply discard and replace.

SIMPLY SHARP KIT AE SA CC/FK

Re-sharpening dental instruments can be inconvenient, tedious and challenging. However, it is important to maintain sharp edges on your curettes and scalers. Our Simply Sharp Kit is designed with your convenience in mind. Th e double-sided stone off ers you the choice of an extra-fi ne surface on one side and coarse grit on the other. Th e kit also includes a powerful 10x loupe for examining your edges. A sharpening test stick is included to conveniently test the cutting edge.
