At a time when more people are watching sports than ever before, it is our responsibility to come together and make fitness and healthy lifestyles a priority. We need to focus considerable effort and investment on making sports and fitness participation more relevant in the minds of consumers. PHIT America believes the best way to fight the inactivity crisis is through education on the importance of staying active to improve the overall health of the country.

My active lifestyle has taken me so many places; from childhood swim team practice at my neighborhood pool to hearing the “Star Spangled Banner” play in London as I was awarded an Olympic gold medal – I owe so much to sports. I encourage you to think about what sports and activity have given you. I bet it’s something worth sharing.

A member of the USA Water Polo National Team, Heather Petri is a four-time Olympic medalist and three-time world champion.

Addressing Our Nation’s Inactivity PandemicBy Heather Petri, USA Water Polo Olympic Gold Medalist and PHIT America Ambassador

From an early age, being active has been a huge part of my life. I got hooked on swimming as a child but later took up water polo,

which led me to four Olympic medals and three world championship victories. Sports gave me so much more than just a place to compete – it gave me a place to grow as a person. Participating on a team is a great way for young people to learn dedication, patience and resiliency.

Having a goal and working with teammates to achieve it is my favorite part of competing in sports. Winning an Olympic gold medal during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was the greatest joy of my life – and I accomplished that goal with my teammates and friends. Though very few athletes will reach this pinnacle, I feel everyone can achieve that feeling of pure joy through sports.

However, not everyone is fortunate enough to be shown the importance of staying active at such a young age. We are currently in the midst of an inactivity epidemic in this country and, if we don’t act soon to reverse its effects, there will be serious long-term consequences.

At this time, nearly 28 percent of Americans – that’s 80 million people – are completely inactive. This means they don’t participate in any physical activities at any

A fourteen-year Federal program, PEP funds a competitive grant that awards school districts and com-munity based organizations resources to provide students with quality, innovative physical education. The PHIT Act would change current Federal tax law to allow for the use of pre-tax dollars to cover expenses related to sports, fitness and other physical activities. Both programs would be fiscally responsible as the World Health Organization estimates every $1 the U.S. invests in physical activity saves $3.20 in future medical costs.

After the event, I was approached to become an ambassador of PHIT America, a non-profit education and advocacy organization dedicated to fighting the inactivity and obesity epidemics. After learning more, it was a slam dunk for me to get

involved. Its message is to show Americans how easy it is to be fit and healthy through regular exercise and participation in sports – two things I feel strongly about.

point during the year. What’s worse, this number has grown steadily over the past decade. Inactivity is a prime contributor to America’s status as the most obese country in the world. Currently, the Center for Disease Control reports 68 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese.

If this trend is allowed to go unchecked, the results will be disastrous. Already the cost of obesity-related medical expenses is above $150 billion per year and there is serious concern that the prevalence of obesity will soon become a threat to national security.

In 2013, I spoke to Congressional members at “National Health Through Fitness Day” on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. about the rise of inactivity and the resulting health issues. The event, which is organized by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association and PHIT America, was a great success. Industry executives and celebrity athletes like me were able to sit down with more than 120 political leaders to lobby for legislation to increase physical activity in our country.

During meetings with lawmakers, our discussions centered around two crucial pieces of legislation to “Get America Moving” – the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) and the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act.
