2017%2018 National Middle School Math Competitions AMC 8 (8 th grade and below) The AMC 8 is a 25%question, 40%minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem%solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom learned skills to unique problem%solving challenges in a low%stress and friendly environment. Students that score in the top 5% and above are recognized nationally. See: https://www.maa.org/math%competitions/amc%8 Last year, three Chesapeake students were recognized by the Chesapeake City Council (two for top 5% and one top 2% nationally). Who: Open to all Chesapeake Students (8 th grade and below) When: 11/14/2017 at 6:00 pm Where: Oscar Smith High School Cafeteria Cost: Registration fee per student depends on the number of students. If we have 10 students register: $8/student; 20 students: $5/student, etc. Students will be expected to pay this fee. Interested students must send an email to Dan Viar at [email protected] prior to 10/8/2017 to register. Mr. Viar may be contacted at (757) 373%7487. Mathcounts Competition Series (6 th >8 th ) The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in%person contests against and alongside their peers (think National Spelling Bee for Math). Created in 1983, it is open to all sixth%, seventh% and eighth%grade students. The Competition Series has 4 levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Students may only participate through the school that they are learning middle school math. Each school can send up to 10 students (a team of 4 and 6 individuals). In the past, Chesapeake has used the school competition to select the top 10 students from each school. This usually takes place in January. The chapter competition will be in February at Norfolk State University against VA Beach, Norfolk, and Suffolk. Only the top team and the top two individuals from NSU get invited to the State Competition. In 2016 Chesapeake had one student. In 2017 Chesapeake had two students make it. We need to register a team for each school by 11/2/2017 to qualify for “early bird” registration ($30/student). Because of this, interested students must send an email to Dan Viar at [email protected] prior to 10/27/2017 to register. Mr. Viar may be contacted at (757) 373%7487. See: https://www.mathcounts.org/programs/competition%series for more information. The VA Math Club in partnership with the City of Chesapeake offers, free classes each weekend to prepare for these competitions.
