Life is a Journey Birth is a beginning And death a destination. And life is a journey: From childhood to maturity And youth to age; From innocence to awareness And ignorance to knowing; From foolishness to discretion And then, perhaps to wisdom; From weakness to strength Or strength to weakness – And often, back again. From health to sickness And back, we pray, to health again; From offense to forgiveness, From loneliness to love, From joy to gratitude, From pain to compassion, And grief to understanding – From fear to faith; From defeat to defeat to defeat – Until, looking backward or ahead We see that victory lies Not at some high place along the way, But in having made the journey, stage by stage A sacred pilgrimage. A Reflection on Death

If life is a pilgrimage, death is an arrival, a celebration. The last words should be neither crazing nor bitterness, but peace and gratitude. We have been given so much. Why is the outcome of our lives so little? Our embarrassment is like an abyss. Whatever we give away is so much less than what we receive. Perhaps this is the meaning of dying: to give one’s whole self away.

Unless we cultivate sensibility to the Glory while we are here, unless we learn how to experience a foretaste of heaven while on earth, what can there be in store for us in life to come? The seed of eternal life is planted within us here and now. But a seed is wasted when places on stone, into souls that die while the body is still alive.

The greatest problem is not how to continue our lives but how to exalt our existence. The cry for a life beyond the grave is presumptuous if there is no cry for eternal life prior to our descent into the grave. Our greatest problem is not how to continue but how to return. “How can I pray unto the Lord in all His bountiful dealings with me,” Psalm 116:12 asks. When life is an answer, death is a homecoming.

This is the meaning of existence, to reconcile liberty with service, the passing with the lasting, to weave the threads of temporality into the fabric of eternity.

This is the meaning of Death, the ultimate self-dedication to the Divine. Death so understood will not be distorted by the craving of immortality: for this act of “giving away” is reciprocity on man’s part of God’s gift of life. For the pious human, it is a privilege to die. Abraham Joshua Heschel

At the rising of the sun and at its going down, We remember them.

At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, We remember them.

At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring, We remember them.

At the shining of the sun and in the warmth of summer, We remember them.

At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn, We remember them.

At the beginning of the year and at its end, We remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live; For they are now a part of us, As we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, We remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart, We remember them.

When we have joy we crave to share, We remember them.

When we have decisions that are difficult to make, We remember them.

When we have achievements that are based on theirs, We remember them.

A Special Prayer for Those Not Saying Yizkor for Parents The following prayer may be recited by worshippers who are blessed by having their parents still living while others are reciting Yizkor:

Almighty God, while those who have lost their parents and their dear ones call to mind those who have gone to their eternal rest, I at this solemn moment raise my eyes unto You, the Giver of Life, and from a grateful heart thank You for Your mercies in having preserved the life of my beloved father and mother.

May it be Your will, Adonai my God and the God of my ancestors, to bless them with health and strength, so that they may be with me for many years to come. Bless them even as they have blessed me, and guard them even as they have guarded me.

In return for all their affection and the sacrifices which they have made for me, may I bring them joy and lighten their cares. May it be my privilege to help them in every way that lies within my power; may I learn to understand and recognize the duty I owe unto them, that I may never have cause to reproach myself when it is too late.

Shield my home from all sorrow. May peace and harmony and Your spirit ever reign within its walls. Keep me true to You and to all with whom I come in contact so that I may do Your will with a perfect heart, my Creator in Heaven.
