She was immediately engaged as a principal singer at the Basle Opera and spent the next 14 years singing professionally in Europe. Since returning to Adelaide in 1984, Guila has performed frequently for the ABC, in principal roles for State Opera of SA, Victorian State Opera and was soloist in several Adelaide Festivals of Arts and Barossa Music Festivals. On two occasions she was invited back to Europe to perform Berlioz' song cycle 'Les Nuits d'Ete' in a series of orchestral recitals in Italy, and has given master-classes and a solo recital in China. She has performed regularly as an oratorio soloist with all the major Adelaide Choirs and toured throughout Australia in the title role of Bizet's Carmen with Co- Opera. From 1985 until her retirement at the end of 2015, Guila was on the vocal staff of the Elder Conservatorium and was Head of Voice from 2009 until 2014. With the vocal students, she was the producer of three stage productions: Sondheim's Into the Woods in 2010, Mozart's The Magic Flute in 2012 and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel in 2014. Guila was a recipient of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Individual Teacher) and in 2013 and 2015 undertook a teaching exchange at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. ARNOLD MATTERS VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP TRUST

Previous First Prize Winners of V736 are ineligible; competition is open only to competitors who have been resident in

Australia for a minimum of 12 months.

NOTE: ENTRY INTO V733, SONG BY AN AUSTRALIAN COMPOSER, IS A PREREQUISITE FOR ENTRY INTO

V736.

Each competitor will sing the following in the HEATS, ***Time Limit 12 minutes:

(a) Any Aria from the accepted opera repertoire AND

(b) A Lied in German.

A MAXIMUM OF 6 FINALISTS WILL BE CHOSEN.

FINAL, ***Time Limit 18 minutes,

Each competitor will sing:

(a) The same aria as they chose for the Heat AND

(b) A selection from Oratorio AND

(c) An English Art Song

Copies of selections must be provided for the adjudicator. Competitors must provide their own accompanist and be

sure he/she is available to perform at the required time. Finalists will be required to produce a written program to

indicate how they would be using the scholarship over a three year period. This time frame will be strictly adhered to.

In addition to performances, emphasis will be placed on an interview by a panel including the adjudicator and a

member of the Management Committee. Subject to a satisfactory interview and acceptable future studies program,

the winner will be offered the scholarship. If in the opinion of the interviewing panel, the $5,0000 scholarship should

not be offered to the winner, then only the $1,000 1st Prize will be awarded. The second placegetter may be offered

the scholarship if his/her standard is high enough and the proposed use of the Scholarship acceptable.

Note: This is not a programmed session. Adjudicator to select finalist(s).

MBS YOUNG VIRTUOSO AWARD

Singers from the Vocal Division who have been resident in South Australia for at least twelve months prior to, and aged

30 years or under on, December 31st 2018 may be selected for a chance to compete in the South Australian Final of

"Young Virtuoso" to be hosted by 5MBS, Sunday October 14th 2.30pm, at St John’s Church Halifax Street Adelaide.

The prizes for the SA Final will be Vocal Prize: $750; Instrumental Prize: $750 and the SA Finalist Prize of $1,500.

These prizes are sponsored by Size Music, Beta Sigma Phi and 5MBS.

The National Final will be held in Brisbane in November. The winner of the National Final will receive the Young

Virtuoso Travelling Scholarship of $10,000 provided by Freemasons Victoria and the Australian Fine Music Network of

community radio stations.

Entry in the SA Final of Young Virtuoso is only through the Adelaide Eisteddfod. There will not be a specific section in

which singers must perform. The adjudicator's decision will be based on all sections competitors have entered in the

2018 vocal competitions. Competitors will need to demonstrate performance and vocal skills across a diverse range of

singing styles. No additional entry fee is required to enter Section V739. Previous winners of V735 or V736 may be
