Dear Families,

For more than 100 years, Girl Scouts

and outdoor adventures have fit

together like campfires and s’mores.

Girl Scout camps provide girls with

female role models, a single-gender

and girl-led environment, lifelong friendships, fresh air and

sunshine (away from phone and TV screens), and activities

that boost self-esteem.

At our four resident and six day camps in Massachusetts

and New Hampshire, every girl is invited to become an

outdoor adventurer. Our camps are safe, inclusive spaces for

girls of all ages to have fun in nature: to take healthy risks,

make noise, play games, develop leadership skills, learn

new outdoor and adventure skills, and build friendships.

Our programs are tailored for each age, from our youngest

campers having fun in pre-Kindergarten programs, to our 11th

and 12th graders becoming Counselors in Training, and every

girl in between. Our summer camp tradition awaits for all!

We invite you and your girl to find the Girl Scout camps

and programs that are right for her. Each camp has its own

unique character with beautiful natural landscapes full

of possibilities. Watch her excitement build as you both

plan her experiences—horseback riding, water sports, arts

and crafts, bicycling, hiking, theater arts, archery, science

exploration, rock wall climbing, high ropes challenge courses,

zip lining, and more. When she returns home from camp,

you will see firsthand the growth of her

courage, confidence, and character.

After camp, girls are welcome to join a

local Girl Scout troop or simply enjoy

our robust year-round programming.

Girl Scouts offers friendship, leadership

development, outdoor programming, and

troop camping all year long.

I also invite you to give her an early start on

the fun with April Vacation Adventures, or

plan a weekend for the whole family at our

camp on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.

We can’t wait to see you at camp!

Research shows that girls benefit immensely from

time outdoors: they experience personal growth and

empowerment, challenge themselves, overcome fears, and

learn teamwork and leadership skills.

Active participation in programs prevents the “summer brain

drain” by keeping girls’ minds active and engaged while they

take a break from school.

Healthy risk-taking in a safe, supportive environment

empowers girls to try new things, which helps them gain

confidence.

Camp allows girls to build strong friendships through shared

experiences outside of the competitive school environment.

Interacting with others in a different setting allows girls to

reinvent themselves, learn from others’ perspectives, and

make new friends whose diverse backgrounds will expand

their worldview.

General Information

What You Need to KnowYou’re in the right place to plan your best summer ever! Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts’ camp

programs let you explore your personal interests, creativity, and the environment. Our caring, trained

staff are committed to ensuring you have fun, make friends, and get to try lots of exciting activities.

Imagine a summer full of visual and performing arts, sailing and swimming, hiking and biking,

science, horseback riding, and much more! You choose: white sands or green hills, relaxation or

challenge, day or overnight. Whatever you choose, Girl Scout camp is where you will discover the

wonders of nature and the potential inside you. Your camp friends are waiting to meet you! Register

anytime at hercamp.org. Not a Girl Scout yet? Not a problem! Prior Girl Scout or troop membership is

not required.

Before Choosing Your Camp

Need more information to choose your camp? Please see our camp-specific pages for details about open houses, meet the staff events, and camp information nights. Details will also be listed on hercamp.org. Want to learn more before signing up but can’t get to camp for a tour? Our staff will come to you! Email [email protected] and we will be happy to schedule a visit at the time and location of your choice. Consider visiting during the summer even if you aren’t ready for camp this summer; it will help you get excited for your first camp experience.

Our Team

Think of our camp staff as your personal team. We hand select our caring and skilled staff based on their ability to work with young people, be part of a team, teach and share skills, and their enthusiasm to commit to the values of Girl Scouting. Once hired, our staff attend one to three weeks of training to bond as a team and gain skills in camping, risk management, safety, and interpersonal communication. Many of the staff return each year and travel from all around the world to ensure you have an amazing camp experience. All staff are at least 18 years of age or are high school graduates. Safety is our priority, so we conduct thorough staff criminal background (CORI) and sexual offender (SORI) checks. To comply with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and to be licensed by the local board of health, we inform you that you have the right to request proof of background checks, camp healthcare policies, discipline policies, as well as policies for filing grievances.

Accreditation

The American Camp Association (ACA) sets high standards for the health and safety of campers and staff, and the delivery of quality programs. ACA accreditation means that the

camp you are considering undergoes a thorough annual review of its operation—more than 250 standards from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross and other youth service agencies to ensure that current practices reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.

Camp Safety

Our priority is your safety and well-being at camp. We follow all safety and risk management guidelines set by the local, state, and federal boards of health, Girl Scouts of the USA, and the ACA. All our camps are ACA accredited and, in Massachusetts, comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (105 CMR 430.000). Our New Hampshire camps comply with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Rules (Part Env-WS 1120.00). In addition, the board of health of the town in which a camp is located licenses that camp.

Camp Living

You will be placed in a group of 5-30 girls, with 2-5 staff per group. If you choose resident camp, you will stay in a cabin (6-2 girls), yurt (6 girls), tent-a-lo (5 girls), or platform tent (4-6 girls). All are supplied with cots/beds and mattresses. The program, number of girls, and campers’ ages determine the living arrangements. Each unit has shelter for rainy day activities, bathroom facilities, and storage.

For more information on our camps or to register online, visit hercamp.org GENERAL INFORMATION | 3

General Information

Camp Buddies

While we think one of the best things about camp is the chance to make new friends, we know that you may feel more comfortable attending with a friend. You may request one “buddy” per session. Both of you must register for the same camp, program, and session, and list each other on the registration forms. The camp director has final say on camp placement.

Weapons, Drugs, Smoking Policy

We do not permit recreational drugs, alcohol, pets, tobacco products, or weapons of any kind (e.g., Swiss army knives, scissors, etc.) at camp. If you take a prescription medication, bring it to camp in its original container with your name on it, and turn it over to the bus monitor or healthcare supervisor upon your arrival at camp.

Pre-Camp Health Assessment

You are required to have a physical examination within 12 months prior to arriving at camp. All health forms must be completed and signed by a physician each year (including inoculation update) and submitted no later than May 1, 2018. Your registration confirmation email will instruct your parent/guardian to log into your CampInTouch account and complete all required forms. You may not attend camp without submitting your health history form and physician’s examination report.

Care of Mildly Ill Campers

We are prepared to handle health issues that may arise at camp. A healthcare supervisor (HCS) staffs the camp health center and a healthcare consultant (local physician) is on call. Staff is responsible for reporting any signs of illness to the HCS, who assesses each situation. The HCS may administer over-the-counter medications she believes are warranted if they are authorized by the parent/guardian. If the HCS determines the camper should be sent home or seen by the healthcare consultant, she informs the camp director and arrangements are made. In both situations, the parent/guardian is contacted as soon as possible.

Campers With Special Needs

We make every attempt to offer summer camp opportunities to all girls and can accommodate most special needs. Please call 617-350-8335 to discuss how we can make your camper’s experience exciting, appropriate, and fulfilling. The information you share with us will be held confidential, shared only as HIPAA allows, and in accordance with your wishes.

Horseback Riding Programs

If you register for one of our riding programs, you must bring long pants or jeans to camp. If you have a Pony Club-approved riding helmet with chin strap and/or one-inch heel boots, you may bring them too. If not, we will provide an approved riding helmet and boots. For safety purposes, you will be skill-tested and the riding director will place you in the programs/lessons that match your skill level.

Driving Directions

Directions to camp can be found on individual camp pages at hercamp.org and will be included in your confirmation packet. Please follow driving directions as provided; GPS directions may be unreliable. Note: Wind-in-the-Pines day camp and resident camp have different addresses.

Bus Transportation

Start camp fun on the way to camp! Bus transportation is included in the cost of day camp and is offered for $50 each way for resident camp.

Day camp bus stop location details are included in this guide. To select a bus stop for pick-up and drop-off, complete the Day Camp Bus Selection Form available via your CampInTouch account.

Resident camp bus service will run to/from Boston, Braintree, Woburn, and camp. Refunds of bus fees will be issued only if notice of cancellation is given seven days prior to the pick-up date. Buses may be canceled by GSEMA due to insufficient enrollment.

Program Cancellation

If a program is canceled for lack of registrations, every effort will be made to place you in a similar program. Camp sessions will be held regardless of weather, but the program may be modified in extreme weather conditions.

Inclement Weather

Horseback riding, high ropes, and water activities may be canceled when weather conditions are unsuitable. Alternative activities will be provided. Refunds are not given when activities are canceled due to weather conditions.

If you’re eager to try overnight camping, but not sure you’re ready to do it on your own, Camp Menotomy is the perfect place to start. Certified lifeguards ensure a safe and relaxing waterfront experience, and trained camp staff lead fun and engaging activities like archery, nature hikes, art projects, and boating—all are great for first-time and veteran campers alike! Troops/groups are responsible for planning and cooking their breakfasts and lunches. At dinner, the whole camp comes together for family-style meals in the dining hall. Troops must adhere to the Girl Scout girl/adult safety ratios (per Volunteer Essentials, Chapter 4) and be accompanied by a first aid- and CPR-certified adult, in addition to an adult who has completed lodge camping training.
