Local Efforts to build a rink in Truckee

▪  1994 – 1997: Bob Yoder & Tom Lane start fund raising –  Project ceases due to low interest, funds returned to donors

▪  1998: The ‘Randall Center’ vision. –  “I looked at the rink (in Reno) and I said to myself, 'We need to have one,’”

remembers Randall, general manager of the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District. "I came back and looked at my staff and said, “We're going to build a rink (in Truckee).”

–  “The intent, I always thought," Randall said, "was if we put a smaller rink in, there

would eventually be a demand for a larger one and Truckee would get a full-sized rink one day.”

Local Efforts to build a rink in Truckee

▪  2005 & 2009: TDRPD Survey’s General Public for Recreation Facilities –  Community Center –  Performing Arts –  Aquatics –  Ice

▪  2008: Community Center $ Excess broken into three buckets: –  $3mm Arts, $3mm Aquatics, $1mm Ice

▪  2009: John Hugo, South Shore campaigns for & designs Ice Center at McIver Arena, effectively removing equestrian area.

▪  2009: TDRPD Votes it Down due to Financial Issues (mostly)

Local Efforts to build a rink in Truckee

▪  2010: TDRPD (due to economic constraints) looks at and begins to review facility closures due to low interest (usage) and high expense.

▪  2010: TDRPD Estimates of financial drain appx. $50,000+/yr

▪  2010: De LaFontaine, Bell, Fellows, Boeri, many others volunteer time to help offset staff costs

▪  2015: Truckee Tahoe Ice Rink Project Team formed to explore expansion of facility at or close to full size rink. Note: –  2009 Community Center Completed –  2016 Aquatic Center Completed –  2017 Community Arts Center Updated –  Public still waiting on better ice offering

▪  We’re very certain of cost recovery and near break-even given comparable studies of multi-use small venues of this size

▪  We’re asking TTBID to: –  Partner with TDRPD financially on these next steps: ▪  Determine Economic, Market Demand & Impact with emphasis on “Heads In Beds” ▪  Financial & Operational Feasibility of the Pavilion ▪  Hire an Architectural Firm to Take Plans to 60% Design Development ▪  Prepare and pay for Construction Estimates

▪  ONLY THEN, can we: –  Get a better understanding of the future, make a go or no go decision, raise money,

bid, and build.
