II.TheAdjunctFacultyMember’sRoleII.A.RightsandProtections

a. Hiringandcontracts:TheadjunctfacultymemberatBSCishiredfollowingapprovalbythechairofthedepartmentinwhichheorshewillteach.Hiringcriteriaincludetechnicalcompetenceandcommitmenttoteaching.Thecontractsignedbytheadjunctfacultymemberisbindingforthedurationoftheacademicterm

forwhichheorsheishired,withtwoexceptions:(1)theCollegereservestherighttocancelacourseifenrollmentistoolowtowarrantofferingthecourse;(2)anadjunctfacultymembermaybeterminatedifitisdetermined,followingdueprocess,thatheorsheisclearlyincompetent,negligent,orunprofessionalinconduct.Adjunctfacultywhodemonstrateproficiencyintheclassroomareconsideredforreappointmentwhenevercoursesintheirteachingareasareofferedandcannotbestaffedbyfull-timefaculty.

b. CVandtranscripts:Officialcopiesoftheadjunctfacultymember'stranscriptsandacurrentCVmustbeonfileintheOfficeoftheProvostpriortoofficialemploymentbytheCollege.

c. Payschedule:Theadjunctfacultymemberispaidonthe29thofthemonthunlessthisfallsonSaturdayorSunday,inwhichcasepaydaywillbetheprecedingFriday.Notethatafacultymembercannotbepaiduntilhisorhercontractissignedandreturnedanduntilallrequiredtaxformsarecompleted.

d. Academicfreedom:Birmingham-SouthernCollegeendorsesthe1940StatementofPrinciplesagreeduponbytheAmericanAssociationofUniversityProfessorsandtheAssociationofAmericanColleges.

Intheinterpretationofthisprincipleitisunderstoodthatthefollowingrepresentsacceptableacademicpractice:

(1)Teachersareentitledtofullfreedominresearchandinthepublicationoftheresults,subjectto

theadequateperformanceoftheirotheracademicduties;butresearchforpecuniaryreturnshouldbebaseduponanunderstandingwiththeauthoritiesoftheinstitution.

(2)Teachersareentitledtofreedomintheclassroomindiscussingtheirsubject,buttheyshouldbecarefulnottointroduceintotheirteachingcontroversialmatterwhichhasnorelationtotheirsubject.Limitationsofacademicfreedombecauseofreligiousorotheraimsoftheinstitutionshouldbeclearlystatedinwritingatthetimeoftheappointment.(3)Collegeanduniversityteachersarecitizens,membersofalearnedprofession,andofficersofaneducationalinstitution.Whentheyspeakorwriteascitizens,theyshouldbefreefrominstitutionalcensorshipordiscipline,buttheirspecialpositioninthecommunityimposesspecialobligations.Asscholarsandeducationalofficers,theyshouldrememberthatthepublicmayjudgetheirprofessionandtheirinstitutionbytheirutterances.Hencetheyshouldatalltimesbeaccurate,shouldexerciseappropriaterestraint,shouldshowrespectfortheopinionsofothers,andshouldmakeeveryefforttoindicatethattheyarenotspeakingfortheinstitution.

e. Representationonthefaculty:Theadjunctfacultymemberisrepresentedonthefacultybythechairofthe

departmentinwhichheorsheteaches.Theadjunctfacultymembershoulddirectinquiries,concerns,orgrievancestothedepartmentchair.

f. Evaluationsofadjuncts:Alladjunctsareevaluatedatleastonceeachacademicyear.Resultsfromstudentevaluationsofcourseswillbemadeavailabletoadjunctfacultymembersfollowingtheendofeachterm.Theadjunctfacultymember'sclassroomwillbevisitedbythedepartmentchairorotherfacultymember,andverbaland/orwrittenfeedbackwillbeprovidedsoonthereafter.AcopyofthecourseevaluationformisincludedinAppendixB.

II.B.Responsibilities

a. Accountability:Theadjunctfacultymemberisdirectlyresponsibletothechairofthedepartmentinwhichheorsheteaches.

b. Coursematerials:Typically,textbookselectionsforadjunctfacultyaremadebythechairofthedepartment

inwhichtheadjunctfacultymemberteaches.Theadjunctfacultymemberprepareshisorherownsyllabus,examinations,andotherinstructionalmaterials.Acopyofthecoursesyllabusmustbeforwardedtothedepartment’sacademicprogramsassistantbeforethefirstclassoftheterm.

c. Teaching:Theadjunctfacultymember'sprimaryresponsibilityistoteachthecoursestowhichheorshehasbeenassigned.Diversityineducationalexperiencesisencouraged,andarangeofinstructionalmethodsisdeemedappropriateasameansoftransmittingknowledgeandseekingunderstanding.However,despitewelcomingdiversityamongclassesandteachingstyles,theCollegeexpectsthefollowingacademicpracticesofallfaculty:

1. Preparationforcoursesandclasses:Allfacultyareexpectedtoplaneachoftheircoursesand

classmeetingswithsoundgoalsandmethodsinmind.Mostcoursescarryoneunitofcredit(whichisequivalenttosixquarterhoursorfoursemesterhoursofcredit),andworkloadsforstudentsshouldbegaugedaccordingly.Adjunctfacultyareencouragedtocomparetheircoursecontentandthedemandsofstudentstothoseoffull-timefacultymembers.Adjunctfacultywillworkwiththeirdepartmentchairsinplanningtheircourses.

2. Usageofclasstime:Allfacultyareexpectedtobegintheirclassesontime,tomakearrangementsfortheirstudents'learningactivitiesshouldthefacultymemberbelatefororabsentfromaclass,andtousetheentireclassperiod,withinreasonablelimits,forinstructionallearningpurposes.

3. Syllabuspreparation:TheProvostoftheCollegerequiresthatallfacultygivetheirstudentsa

writtensyllabusatthebeginningofaterm.Thesyllabus,whichmustbeonfileintheappropriatedepartmentoffice,shouldspecifylearningoutcomesforthecourseandhowthoseobjectivesrelatetothegeneraleducationormajorprogramgoalsofthedepartment;listreadingassignments,examinationdates,termpaperassignments;delineatetheclassattendancepolicy;includeastatementconcerningtheHonorCodeandplagiarism;anddescribethewayinwhichthefinalgradewillbedetermined.AdjunctfacultyshouldconsultwiththeirdepartmentchairsinordertosecureacopyofcommongeneraleducationoutcomesthatarerequiredtoappearonthesyllabiofallcoursesapprovedbytheFacultytofulfilladesignatedoutcomeintheExplorationscurriculum.AsummaryoftheExplorationsGeneralEducationProgramaccompaniesthishandbook.AdditionalinformationcanbefoundintheCollegeCatalogorontheCollegewebsite.

Tobeincompliancewithstandardpracticeforacademicaccessibility,syllabimustalsohaveastatementaddressingacademicaccessibilityandaccommodations.Thefollowingstatementisrecommendedforallsyllabi:“Ifyouareregisteredforadjustments,pleasemakeanappointmentwithmeassoonaspossibletodiscussaccommodationsthatmaybenecessary.Duringthisdiscussion,youarenotexpectedtodiscloseanydetailsconcerningyourdisabilitythoughyoumaydiscussthesedetailsatyourdiscretion.IfyouhaveadisabilitybuthavenotcontactedAngieSmith,CoordinatorofAccessibility,pleasecall226-7909orvisitherinStudentServicesonthesecondflooroftheNortonCenter(suite241).Youmayalsocontacttheheratawsmith@bsc.eduifyouhaveanyquestionsorneedmoreinformation.”

4. InstructionalTechnologyApplicationsandSupport:Accountsforadjunctfacultyarecreatedfore-mail,Moodle,andTheSIS.AMoodlecoursepageiscreatedbyITstaffpriortothestartofeachtermforeachclass.Moodleisausefultoolfore-mailcommunicationwithstudents,disseminationofcoursematerials,submissionandstorageofstudentassignments,recordingofgrades,andcoursediscussionboards.Moodleaccountaccessinstructionsandausermanual

areavailableontheITHelpdeskwebsite.Classschedules,rosters,andstudentgradesaremaintainedonTheSIS,theCollege’sstudentinformationsystem.BothMoodleandTheSIScanbeaccessedfromtheBSChomepage.Inaddition,anumberofotherinstructionalsoftwareapplicationsareavailabletofaculty.Adjunctfacultyshouldconsultwiththeirdepartmentchairand/ortheIThelpdeskregardingtheavailabilityofparticularprograms.

5. Evaluationofstudents:Itisrecommendedthatsomeformofstudentevaluationbeundertakeninallcoursesearlyeachterm.Itisalsorecommendedthatfrequentquizzesand/orwrittenworkbeassignedduringtheterm,thatallwrittenworkbegradedcarefullyandpromptly,andthatconferencesbeheldwithstudentswhoappeartobeintrouble.Allfacultyareurgedtouseessayaswellas"objective"testsandtorequirehighstandardsofgoodwritingofallstudentsinallclasses.Recordsofstudents'gradesandcourseworknotreturnedshouldbekeptonfileatleastfiveyearsafterthecoursehasended.IftheadjunctdoesnotexpecttocontinueatBirmingham-Southerninsubsequentterms,heorsheshouldprovidetheserecordstothedepartmentchair.

6. Explorationsoutcomesassessment:AllcoursesthataredesignatedtofulfillanExplorations

generaleducationoutcomemustbeassessedwiththeuseofacommonrubricattheendoftheterm.Adjunctfacultyshouldworkcloselywiththeirdepartmentchairsfordetailsofthisassessmentprocedure.

7. Availabilitytostudents:Recognizingtheimportanceofstudent-teachercontactineducation,

theCollegeencouragesfacultytobeavailableforindividualinteractionwithstudentsoutsidetheclass.Thedepartmentchaircanusuallyprovideanofficeorconferenceroomforprivateconferences;insomecases,departmentshaveadjunctfacultyofficespace.Thelibraryisalsoagoodresourceforprivateconferencerooms.

8. Referralsforstudents:TheCollegeregardseachstudentasauniqueindividualwithcapacityfor

intellectualandpersonaldevelopment.Facultyareexpectedtotrytofostereachstudent'sdevelopment.Consequently,facultyareexpectedtobeknowledgeableregardingacademicandnon-academicresourcesavailabletostudentsand,whenneeded,toreferstudentstoappropriatestaff,programs,andofficesoncampus.SeeCampusResourcesandContactsinthishandbook.

9. Responsivenesstofeedbackandcriticism:Shouldlegitimatesuggestionsforimproved

performanceasaninstructorbemadebythedepartmentchairortheprovostoftheCollege,theadjunctfacultymemberisexpectedtocooperatetothebestofherorhisability.

10. ObservanceofCollegepolicies:AdjunctfacultymembersareexpectedtoadheretoallCollege

policies.TheCollegeCatalogcontainsacomprehensivestatementoftheseandotherpolicies—note,inparticular,thesectionontheHonorCode.OtherCollegepoliciescanbefoundintheFacultyHandbookandonthepolicieswebpage.

d. SexualandGender-BasedMisconduct:TheCollegeforbidsanytypeofsexualorgender-basedmisconduct

amongitsstudents,faculty,andstaff.TheCollegeencouragesallmembersoftheacademiccommunitytoreportsuspectedsexualandgender-basedmisconducttotheappropriateauthoritiessothatitcanbeinvestigated,remedied,andeliminated.Suchmisconductisprohibitedwhethertheactorisastudent,facultymember,staffmember,contractor,visitor,orothermemberoftheCollegecommunity.BSCforbidsretaliationagainstanypersonwhohasopposed,reported,orparticipatedinaninvestigationconcerningsexualorgender-basedmisconduct.

Sexualmisconductincorporatesarangeofbehaviorsincludingnon-consensualsexualintercourse,non-consensualsexualcontact,sexualexploitation,sexualharassment,intimatepartnerviolence,stalking,and

anyotherconductofasexualnaturethatisnon-consensual,orhasthepurposeoreffectofcreatinganintimidating,hostile,oroffensiveenvironment,orunreasonablyinterfereswithanindividual’sworkand/oracademicperformance.Gender-basedmisconductencompassesbehaviorthatisnotsexualinnature,butisdirectedatapersonbecauseoftheirgenderorgenderidentification.ThecompletepolicyisincludedintheFacultyHandbookasAppendixC.

e. AlcoholandDrugPolicy:Birmingham-SouthernCollegerespectstheStateofAlabama'sminimumdrinking

age,andforthatreasonprohibitstheconsumptionofalcoholicbeveragesbyanystudentunderage21.Allmembersofthefacultyareexpectedtoabidebythispolicywhentheyarewithstudents,bothon-andoff-campus.ViolationsofthislawmayresultincriminalpenaltiesandsanctionsbytheCollege.

TheCollegeiscommittedtoprovidingadrug-freeworkplace.Theunlawfulmanufacture,distribution,dispensing,possession,oruseofacontrolledsubstanceisprohibitedintheworkplace.Anemployeewhoviolatesthispolicymaybesubjectedtodisciplinaryactionuptoandincludingtermination,ormayberequired,attheemployee'sexpense,toparticipatesatisfactorilyinadrugabuseassistanceorrehabilitationprogramchosenbytheCollege.

III.PoliciesRelevanttotheClassroomIII.A.Absences

a. Studentabsences:InallcoursestheCollegeexpectsregularclassattendancebutleavesittothediscretionoffacultymemberstoestablishsuchregulationsasaredeemedacademicallysound.Instructorsshoulddocumenttheirattendancepolicyonthesyllabusandannounceittoeachclassearlyintheterm.Nostudentshouldbepenalizedformissingclassesifthepolicyhasnotbeenmadeclear.ItisrequestedthatthenamesofallstudentsmissingclassthreetimesinsuccessionbesenttoMarthaAnnStevenson,AssistantProvost,inorderthatthesestudentsmaybecontacted.

b. Facultyabsences:Instructorswhoknowinadvancethattheywillbeabsentfromclassesshouldinformboth

theacademicdepartmentchairandacademicprogramsassistantofthetemporaryarrangementsmadefortheirclasses.Itisrecommendedthattheinstructorarrangeforlearningactivitiestocontinueinhisorherabsence.Emergencyabsencesshouldbereportedtothedepartmentchairassoonaspossible.

III.B.CourseCancellation

a. Lowenrollment:TheCollegereservestherighttocancelanycourseforwhichaminimumenrollmentfigureisnotmet.

b. Inclementweather:Occasionallyclasseswillbecancelledbecauseofinclementweather.Whenthisdecisionismade,itwillbeannouncedviapublicmedia.Forup-to-dateinformation,calltheBSCinformationline,205-226-3000.

III.C.ClassroomVisitationandEvaluationOneoftheresponsibilitiesofthedepartmentchair,ormembersofthefacultydesignatedbythedepartmentchair,istovisittheclassroomsoffacultyinthatdepartmenttoobservethelearningsituationfirst-handandtomakeconstructiveevaluationsdesignedtofacilitatethelearningprocess.Basedontheclassroomvisitandareflectiononteachingwrittenbytheinstructor,andanyotherpertinentinformation,thedepartmentchairwillprovideawrittenassessmentofalladjunctfacultyinthedepartment.AcopyoftheevaluationformisincludedinAppendixA.
