ENRICHMENT @ ORRINGTON Children at Orrington have an abundance of enrichment opportunities inside and outside of school to explore new interests, dig deeper into subjects or sports that they enjoy, and develop stronger friendships with peers.

§ Through our partnership with Right at School, kids can work on their culinary skills, learn to code, play soccer or tennis, perfect their stand-up routines and so much more! (pg 3-4)

§ Budding young writer or journalist? Be part of the new Orator team! (pg 6)

§ Girls Play Sports, as well as city football and basketball leagues, provide great opportunities to try out new sports and bond with Orrington teammates. (pg 7-8)

§ 4th and 5th grade students can take penchants for performing arts to the next level by joining the band, orchestra, or Creative Music & Drama! (p 9-10)

We believe that exploring enrichment opportunities can be an important part of young students’ academic, athletic and social-emotional development, and want to ensure that all students are able to participate. Scholarships are available for all programs – see page 5 for more details.

THIS GUIDE Compiled by the Orrington PTA, this guide aims to help families understand the breadth of opportunities specifically for Orrington students before and after school, and what scholarships are available. While fairly comprehensive, this guide cannot hope to include every opportunity throughout the year, nor does it include the wide variety of sports, classes and so much more available across the city of Evanston. If you have any questions about this guide or general questions about Enrichment @ Orrington, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Email anytime: [email protected]!

Orrington PTA has partnered with Right at School, a national

provider of before- and after-school activities, to help offer a great

number of enrichment opportunities. Working with RAS allows us to:

§ Have a single point of registration for the majority of programs

§ Access a wider range of clubs and electives

§ Ensure professional management of the registration process,

background checks and day-to-day operations

§ Offer a greater number of scholarships for Orrington families,

thanks to RAS support.

RAS electives are taught by all sorts of professionals. Some are

teachers here at Orrington; many are from local organizations who

specialize in a certain subject, whether coding, cooking or circus

performance! Before- and after-school electives fall into five major

categories, with some overlap – examples below from Fall 2019

PERFORMING In addition, 4th and 5th grade bring a new variety of performing arts opportunities, beyond Right at School electives.

4th & 5TH GRADE BAND Sept – May

Joining the band means free weekly lessons, in school, taught by Haven Middle School music teachers. Learn wind instruments such as the trumpet, trombone, flute or French horn, or perfect your percussion skills. In early September, Haven teaahers give instrument demonstrations to all 4th grade students. Those interested are asked to submit an online form. Performances are given through the year.

The enrollment fee is $10, and families are responsible for instrument rental. However, Haven has some school-owned instruments for families in need of financial support.

To learn more, visit www.havenband.weebly.com

4TH & 5TH GRADE ORCHESTRA Sept – May

Similarly, the orchestra also offers 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to learn a new instrument, with weekly lessons at Orrington. The orchestra is focused exclusively on string instruments, from the violin up to the bass, with no prior experience necessary. Haven teachers will give instrument demonstrations to all 4th grade students in early September. Plan to attend an Open House at Haven Middle School in the first week of September, to meet Mr Janossy, learn about the Orchestra program & try out instruments. Those interested are asked to complete a registration form by September 6th. Mr Janossy will contact parents and let them know the orchestra schedule. Group Orchestra lessons will start the week Sept 23rd.
