2019 ANNUAL REPORT

ANGELO SANCHEZCAMPUS PASTOR519church
During Lent, we studied the Kingdom Parables across our church family. We were reminded
the kingdom of heaven is like a hidden treasure, a pearl of great price, a mustard seed, leaven in the bread, a gardener scattering seeds, workers in a vineyard, and a wedding banquet. Jesus also said, “The Kingdom of God is already among you.” This year I have seen so many more images that could describe the kingdom of God. The kingdom of heaven is like: children leading a congregation to raise over $50,000 to support empowerment of children around the world through ZOE; 70-year-olds serving beside teenagers in the summer heat to make homes warmer, safer, and drier during the 20th year of AOSP; over 450 children gathering for VBS reminding us to power up through our connection with God; first-generation

students attending college through mentoring and networking through PREPA; children fed during the school year and summer through programs like Read and Feed, ApexSMART, Feed the Kids, and more; 10 weekly worship gatherings in three locations, two languages, and multiple styles; monthly trips to hurricane-impacted regions across our state. This annual report describes a small glimpse of the many ways your gifts are helping us know and experience God’s kingdom right now. Thank you!
Being your pastor for the past several months has been such a gift to my family and me. In the midst of transition, 519church has continued to
be a community of faith that seeks to love well and live differently in every aspect of life.
As I pray and dream alongside our church leaders about where God is leading this church, the theme that continues to arise is that God is just beginning with what He has in store for 519church.
As we share more about that vision with you over the coming months, I want to thank you for all the ways you bless this church. It is because of your continued generosity — not just financially — and commitment that 519church is the beautiful community it is today. I give God thanks for the privilege that it is to be your pastor. Thank you for welcoming us to the 519family so well!

Over the past year we have renewed our commitment to
intentionally come together as a family of faith. The strength and blessings that come from being united in Christ and earnestly seeking his will in the big and small things is humbling. While all are unique, it is the love of God that binds us together. Mendi NietersAdministrative Council Chair

As Methodists we are called to work for justice and recognize that John Wesley preached that we cannot be an unaccompanied Christian; Methodism is a social religion. Our collective efforts make available
God’s grace to the Fiesta community and it is a blessing for us all. As Methodists we are called
to prove our faith through love and action to everyone without regard to nation of birth, color of skin, or immigration status.

The Peak is home…where we are embraced and loved…where we can come as we are and build community together…where we learn and grow and experience Jesus…where we are cared for and supported…and from where we step out into the world to love and be the dream of God for others.
Beth BordeauxPeak Steering Team Chair
As the Apex UMC campus lives into our charge to Welcome All, Love All, and Serve All, we continue to provide numerous opportunities to share our love of Christ with our members, neighbors, and visitors. We are grateful for the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we offer ourselves, our resources, and our gifts to help our community and the world see Jesus in all we say and do.
Sheila Ahler Apex Steering Team Chair
519 is about loving well and living differently so that ALL people experience the radical love of Jesus and take it to the places they live, work, play. I’ve watched this in action as 519ers have modeled this in ordinary and extraordinary ways, and I’m proud to
be on mission with 519 and the broader family of faith. Many thanks to all
who support and participate in this movement. Loving well and living differently is best done together.
Todd Davis 519 Steering Team Chair

“WE ENJOY MANY THINGS ABOUT THE PEAK – THE PASTORAL STAFF AND
THEIR MESSAGES, MUSIC, AND OUTREACH WORK; THE WELCOMING AND
INCLUSION OF EVERYONE; AND FEELINGS OF GRATITUDE AND PEACE,
WHICH REMINDS US THAT FAITH COMES IN MANY FORMS.”
“THEY ARE NOT ONLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD, BUT THEY ARE
EXCITED AND PROUD OF THEIR HARD WORK! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STATEMENT
OF LOVE AND SUPPORT FROM OUR CONGREGATION AND A REFLECTION OF THE
POWER OF GOD’S LOVE THROUGH THE HEARTS OF OUR CHILDREN.”
Our children of Apex UMC heard the stories of ZOE orphans and decided to support the three-year ZOE empowerment program! The K-5th Sunday school classes did chores to raise money from
Feb-June and raised $24,100. After hearing this great news, a family in our congregation donated $900 to get the kids to their goal of $25,000 which was matched by an anonymous donor. Their combined total of $50,000 will allow our children to change the lives of over 600 orphans! They are
not only making a difference in the world, but they are excited and proud of their hard work! What a
beautiful statement of love and support from our congregation and a reflection of the power of God’s love through the hearts of our children. Thank you to our kids and to everyone who supported them as they learned they can make a difference in the world and in the lives of these vulnerable children. (wearezoe.org)
Our family – David, Kristin, Ben, and Evelyn Kaiser – joined the Peak in June 2018. Having been
raised in different faiths and after moving several times, we had not attended church for a long time. After planting roots in Apex and starting a family, we wanted to find a community that shared our values, provided positive messages of openness and acceptance, and had a congregation that was warm and welcoming. We had planned to ‘church shop’ around the area, and the Peak was our first stop. But after our first visit we knew we had found the church we wanted to be a part of. We enjoy many things about the Peak – the pastoral staff and their messages, music, and outreach work; the welcoming and inclusion of everyone; and feelings of gratitude and peace, which reminds us that faith comes in many forms. We attend regularly - you will find Ben and Evelyn in Sunday school, Kristin making coffee, and David reading or ushering. We feel fortunate to have found The Peak.

“THE RED BALLOON PROJECT PUTS ON PARTIES FOR SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN. AS
A MEMBER OF 519CHURCH, I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT THE DOTS BETWEEN OUR
NEED FOR A SPACE FOR OUR PARTIES AND 519’S WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER WITH
COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH ITS CONFERENCE CENTER.”
“BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP WITH A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
WHILE ASSISTING HER IN THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS WAS
A VERY REWARDING, AND SOMETIMES HUMBLING, EXPERIENCE!”
- Morgan Grinnell, mentor from 519
T he life of Latinx students in the U.S. and their struggle to find and receive scholarships to universities is hard. Ashley Arredondo, an 18-year-old woman with high grades and a dream
of having a doctorate in medicine, wants to go to college not only to help her mother who raised her practically by herself, but also to help others. Ashley decided to participate in Preparation for Higher Education (PREPA), offered by Fiesta Cristiana. This program is
designed so that students, families, and mentors can work together during the year and students can explore different paths to higher education, prepare themselves, apply, and decide. Through this program, Ashley was able to accomplish her dreams and was accepted to the prestigious Davidson College, a very expensive private school, and was awarded a full scholarship for tuition. There is no doubt that God gives many blessings and that Ashley is an example of what can be accomplished thanks to the love of God that is reflected in ministries like PREPA.

Scott Wittig CO-FOUNDER, THE RED BALLOON PROJECT
Our organization, The Red Balloon Project, puts on parties for seriously ill children. As a member of 519church, I was thankful to be able to connect the dots between our need for a space for our
parties and 519’s willingness to partner with community organizations like ours through its conference center. Our goal is to put smiles on kids’ faces and this facility helps us do that in a great way.
We have been able to use 519’s space for two parties and a number of meetings. The facility is so diverse in its available spaces that we were even able to get a Corvette inside to create an extra special touch for the kids during one of our events. The staff is wonderful to work with, and 519’s location is perfect as it is so centrally located in the Triangle.
We are thankful for 519’s willingness to partner with organizations like ours in the community.

OUR APEX UMC FAMILYOUR SHARED MISSION
Inviting and equipping all to follow Jesus in transforming the world.
OUR SHARED MOVEMENT
We are a Wesleyan movement, connected with the global United Methodist Church. We are engaged with the people and communities of Southwest Wake County, committed to their increased personal piety and social holiness through processes designed to equip leaders for multiplying discipleship.
OUR SHARED VISION 2030
As the communities around us grow significantly, our Apex UMC Family goal is to double the number of people who are being reached through the ministries of our church family, measured by those individuals and families becoming invited, involved, connected, and invested in the life of our worshiping congregations.

*Note: Expenses at mid-year benefit from Administrative Council’s decision to delay payment of some apportionments to the NC Conference until December. Consistent with 2018, the budgeted plan is to pay full apportionments at year-end. At YTD 7/31/19, two months of apportionments payments have been delayed.

As the results below show, as we enter the middle of the summer months, we are currently experiencing negative cashflows
in three of our four communities. While a deficit mid-year is not uncommon, our leadership teams are paying close attention to our financial health at local campus and collective family levels. For our Apex UMC and Peak campuses, those teams expect to recover most of the current mid-year shortfall by the end of year. Our 519 team is working on a
longer-term plan to recover, but it is likely the Apex UMC Family will need to provide some additional support during their season of transition. Our Fiesta Cristiana results include approximately $37,500 in grant revenue relating to future expense periods and anticipate breaking even through June 2020.
Our Finance Committee is very engaged to ensure we maintain the financial viability we’ve built together in recent years. One of the key metrics is
to maintain a minimum cash on hand (unrestricted Apex UMC Family reserve fund) equal to one month of annual operating expenses (~$306k). Currently, we are above this goal and have active plans to sustain this level.
Thank you for the ways you invest in this shared kingdom mission, and for empowering our congregations to invite and equip all to follow Jesus in transforming the world.
