STEP-20054-G RECORDS & INFORMATION MANAGEMENT TECHNICIAN COMMUNITY SERVICES - FINANCE, SYSTEMS & ADMINISTRATION As a member of the Records and Information Management team, the student will be a part of the implementation of records program that will include addressing and incorporating the paper and electronic records into a combined inventory listing for listing controls of current and past records held by a branch/unit within the department. The electronic information is stored in a variety of mediums, and each one will need to be reviewed, assessed and integrated into the inventory and records position applied. The student will provide support to the department on all R&IM processes, including opening/closing records, storage/disposal of records, classifying information, determining what information is to be retained and where, and providing training to employees on the new inventory system. The student will work independently, and as part of the R&IM team, and with our clients to bring their records into the electronic inventory database. Field of Study: Completion of first year or higher in Record Management, Information Management or Library Conditions of Employment: Ability to lift 24 pound boxes STEP-20003-G PROJECT COORDINATOR COMMUNITY SERVICES - INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT BRANCH The purpose of this position is to assist Project Managers in the coordination of public sector infrastructure projects. This position will give the STEP student first-hand experience dealing with engineering/construction project coordination while being mentored by Project Managers. This position will require an individual who can produce high quality work under tight deadlines. The ability to use software programs such as MS Word and Excel effectively are necessary to create professional documents. Tasks/Responsibilities will include: RFP and Tender coordination, including compiling and proof-reading documents; Coordinating contracts, including entering data into contract system, and collection of supporting documentation; Liaison with consultants and contractors; Respond to inquiries and perform administrative office duties; Attending project meetings with Project Managers for pre-construction tenders, monthly progress meetings, etc.; Performing site visits for background data collection and progress review; Complying with Safe Work Practices at all times and wearing Protective Equipment when required; Direct contact with contractors, community members and YG staff using tack and diplomacy. STEP-20004-G PROPERTY TAXATION ASSISTANT COMMUNITY SERVICES - PROPERTY ASSESSMENT & TAXATION The Property Taxation Assistant (PTA) will work closely with the Property Tax Administrator during the property taxation cycle. The cycle begins when tax notices are mailed, includes various financial transactions as they occur, then ends with the collection of past due accounts and the lien process. The PTA also ensures that legislation, regulations, policies and procedures are followed. This position will provide a high level of customer service, assisting clients at the front counter, as well as receiving their payments. Additional responsibilities include reconciling and entering online payments into the tax system, running reports and preparing cash blotters. The Taxation Assistant will also be exposed to the Yukon Home Owner Grant program and prepare journal entries for homeowner grants, as well as reconciling homeowner grant claims for municipalities and process cheque requisitions for accounts payable. This position will also assist with the collection procedures for overdue property tax accounts and general administrative support where required. STEP-20005-G COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT COMMUNITY SERVICES - PROTECTIVE SERVICES/WILDLAND FIRE MANAGEMENT The Wildland Fire Management branch (WFM) contributes to protection of people, property and the development of sustainable, fire resilient Yukon communities and infrastructure. The communications assistant is a valued member of the WFM communications team and is responsible for assisting with day-to-day communication services, activities, and support for web and social media activities. The position is responsible for both writing and assisting in the development of a range of products including speeches, news releases, communication strategies and publications and web content. The position also provide support to public engagement and outreach strategies as well as assisting with all forms of public awareness issues that help WFM build trust with Yukoners by keeping the territory informed. As a fire mapper, this position may be required to fly in small aircraft and be on standby as fire danger conditions warrant. The documentation of fuel treatments involves travelling to communities across the territory to collect and enter data into the new FireSmart database. Other tasks may include working on the Values at Risk database, assisting with Wildand Fire Risk Management initiatives and preparing FireSmart maps for technical review. STEP-20007-G ASSISTANT IT ANALYST EDUCATION - POLICY & PARTNERSHIPS Reporting to the Support Team Lead, the Assistant IT Support Technician role receives training to provide ITSS technicians assistance with: OSx and Windows desktop and laptop imaging and iOS device configuration; software and or app installation, configuration, testing and appointment; IT asset management (asset tagging, inventory tracking, device scanning, etc.); a medium scale deployment of new computing devices to Yukon schools; Level one IT support to client; computing device, printer and network diagnostics; other related duties. The position is responsible to receive, catalog, and distribute school library books, and to prepare materials for circulation by processing new and existing library resources. Working with the Resource Services Cataloguer, the position will search school databases and create inventories of library resources, as well as updating databases with current resources and information. The position will also assist the Resource Services Operations Clerk to receive, catalogue and distribute curricular materials to schools, as well as inventory and update resource kits and media materials to support the curriculum and various content areas in grade levels. The position will provide data entry support for school curriculum request, including processing new materials and receiving returned goods from schools. The position will assist with the development of digital and print resources to share with school administrators, teachers, and teacher librarians. STEP-20010-G AGRICULTURE RESEARCH STUDENT ENERGY, MINES & RESOURCES - AGRICULTURE The Agriculture Research Assistant will primarily assist in the research undertaken by the Agriculture Branch. This will include assisting with experimental design, maintaining field sites and the collection of data. This position will operate a range of field and data collection equipment including data loggers, ATVs and water pumps. Most of the work will occur near Whitehorse with daily trips to the research sites. Office work will involve researching various agriculture related topics, inputting field data and assisting with a range of programs and events. The Agriculture Research Assistant will also play a critical role working in the field with the Grazing Management Coordinator, Agriculture Land Resources Officer, and the Development Officer assisting with the collection of relevant data and soils information. This will take the student into the backcountry of the Yukon so they must be in good condition, capable of walking for a full day through variable terrain. This data is collected in order to gather information regarding environmental health, environmental conditions and regulatory compliance. Office work involves compiling the analyze data and completing reports that describe the quality of the data capitalized. Fieldwork is undertaken in all weather, involves travel by truck, aircraft, boat and ATV, and requires a lifting and moving of samples and equipment. The Branches mandate to collect and analyze data from land-use activities within the Territory is accomplished by a combination of field studies and office-based research. This position is located in Mayo. With this position, there will be an emphasis on fieldwork. Travel to remote locations outside of Whitehorse with some overnight stays, as well as fieldwork near Whitehorse (day trips) are required. STEP-20013-G LAND MANAGEMENT SUPPORT OFFICER ENERGY, MINES & RESOURCES - LAND MANAGEMENT This position will support Land Management Branch primarily by conducting a review of land reserves across Yukon. This work will include consulting with inter-departmental staff to determine land reserve needs and accuracy, and updating the land reserve information as necessary, including updating geospatial information. The candidate will be collaborating with colleagues across units and branches with an Energy, Mines and Resources and with other departments on this project. The position will also include conducting legislative, policy and file research. It will require the use of remote sensing, map interpretation, GIS, and computer applications in the research and development of comprehensive, integrated land management information. The position involves regular client interaction by phone and email and in person. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are required. Client needs centre around the review of land applications and administration of land dispositions. The work is generally office based, with regular meetings. This position is best suited to someone who has excellent time management skills and can adhere to strict guidelines. Attention to detail is essential. The ideal candidate will be a team player who works well in a group setting but is also able to independently to complete essential tasks. STEP-20017-G ASSISTANT WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN ENVIRONMENT - FISH & WILDLIFE In this position the student will work with Yukon Government's Senior Wildlife Biologist to carry out various wildlife inventory, monitoring, and research projects in the territory. Duties will include a mix of work in the field and the lab. Field duties may involve work in remote settings capturing, tracking, or monitoring various wildlife species. Lab work will include procuring and processing biological samples, or working on datasets in Excel or a GIS to enter or extract biological data for management purposes. The student will work in a team-based environment that often includes other government biologists and technicians, university professors and graduate students and First Nations staff. Representative projects the student may work on include: 1) capture of various smaller mammals, 2) radio-telemetry, 3) monitoring wildlife with camera traps and other remote sensing instruments, 4) non-invasive surveys of wildlife or their signs, 5) processing of biological samples in a laboratory, and 6) entering and mapping wildlife data in a computer. The focus will be on terrestrial vertebrate species (mostly mammals) and their habitats. The student will assist in carrying out stock assessments of lake trout and lake whitefish populations across Yukon, and the subsequent analyses and reporting of these data. The student will collect habitat data in support of fisheries assessments and assist with angler harvest surveys. The student will assist in delivering fisheries related educational content to the public. The student will assist in Yukon Stocked Lakes Program, through fish stocking, stocked lake assessments and brood stock spawn takes. The student will provide support for day-to-day fisheries program activities, through maintenance of field gear, data entry and database maintenance, preparation of biological samples and other laboratory, office and field assistance. This position includes work that is physically demanding, in remote areas, in inclement weather conditions, and may include travel in boats, aircraft and ATVs. STEP-20019-G HABITAT & ECOLOGICAL MONITORING TECHNICIAN ENVIRONMENT - FISH & WILDLIFE The student will have the opportunity to work on a variety of wildlife, habitat, and ecological monitoring projects. These will be field and office-based and the student will be working in both upland and wetland environments around the territory. Fieldwork may include wildlife habitat assessment, ecological land classification, climate change back/ecosystem monitoring in alpine tundra and boreal forest, and wetland baseline data collection. Some fieldwork will be in remote camp settings or near communities. Office work will mainly involve data management, reporting, GIS analysis\mapping, and maintenance of herbarium in Whitehorse. STEP-20020-G WILDLIFE INTERPRETER FIELD ASSISTANT ENVIRONMENT - FISH & WILDLIFE This position is responsible for promoting and hosting events for the Wild Discoveries interpretive series including updating calendars, distributing posters, and communicating with public. Events are hosted throughout the territory often involving overnight travel. This person is also responsible for developing and delivering children’s programs to the public and to school kids. Working with the Wildlife Viewing Program requires creativity, and outgoing personality, and a strong desire to work with the public and providing educational opportunities. This position also assists Department of Environment biologists working in the field monitoring wildlife populations in habitat. Under the direction of a project lead, this position will conduct wildlife studies such as bat banding, bird count, vegetation assessments, camera trapping, and small mammal studies. Such work involves recording accurate data, developing spreadsheets, and computer work with databases. Typical office or laboratory work in Whitehorse will include the identification, preparation, labelling and cataloguing fossils, and entry of data into an electronic database. Potential fieldwork may include camping in remote locations for extended periods often in dirty conditions. This position will assist with laboratory-based collections management and research and assist with ongoing field monitoring and collecting at various palaeontological sites across the Yukon, including placer gold mines near Dawson City and along Old Crow River in northern Yukon. STEP-20049-G MARKETING INTERN TOURISM & CULTURE - TOURISM The Marketing Intern will provide support to the Marketing Unit, Tourism Branch, of the Department of Tourism and Culture.
