    Addiction Formation and Implications Clinical Program

    Clinical experts will present interactive sessions that will improve participant knowledge on identification and manage the potential clinical implications for illness/injury management that arise from substance misuse and addiction. The education also aims to develop in clinicians a deeper understanding of these factors that contribute to addiction formation and why it can be so difficult for those patients with substance misuse and addiction to remain abstinent.

    Learning objectives Differentiate between addiction, dependence and tolerance.

    Differentiate the biology of addiction, in relation to brain function and addiction formation.

    Identify which withdrawal syndromes can are a threat to life.

    Discuss the best ways to manage individual withdrawal syndromes.

    Understand the benefits of holistic approach to patients with pre-existing substance, addiction and misuse problems.

    Understand what substances are commonly being abused/used recreationally including an overview of new and “legal” substances that are used illicitly.

    Ageing Gracefully & Other Inconvenient Truths

    Clinical Program

    This interactive program is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinical staff that manage care and provide treatments for older adults. Delivered by clinical experts with a focus on the delivery of

    evidence based care. Sessions include case study discussions and group work.

    Learning objectives At the conclusion of this study day, the learner will be able to

    Develop an understanding of the physiological changes and the impact of

    co-morbidities on the health of the older patient.

    Explain how the mental and cognitive assessment chart can assist in health

    care delivery of the older patient.

    Become familiar with how diet/nutrition, medication and social issues impact

    on management of the older patient.

    Explore the older patient’s experience and the role of the family and

    community support.

    All Things Respiratory

    Clinical Program

    This program provides knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients with respiratory conditions. Interactive sessions include respiratory assessment, case studies, and tracheostomy care and chest drain workshops.

    Learning objectives

    At the conclusion of this study day, the learner will be able to:

    Demonstrate understanding of pathophysiology of the respiratory system, effective assessment techniques and identify abnormalities through engagement in practical case studies.

    Demonstrate the correct use and supply of prescribed oxygen and inhalers, as they relate to various medical conditions.

    Gain an understanding of the correct care / use of advanced respiratory treatments (e.g. non-invasive ventilation (NIV), intercostal catheters (ICCs) and tracheostomies), applying theory to practical workshops.

    Clinical Program

    This program provides clinicians’ up to date evidence based knowledge and skills to care and treat patients with coagulation disorders, venous thrombosis and embolic disease. Sessions include

    Charlie’s Study Support Group Professional Program

    These monthly 1 hour informal sessions are designed to link nurses who are studying at post graduate level or considering post graduate study with experienced researchers and educators, and with each other. The sessions provide a relaxed environment that supports participants to ask questions and share experiences of balancing study, work, and home responsibilities. There is also opportunity to arrange individual support session with research and education facilitators, individual support sessions with research and education facilitators.

    Learning objectives

    Informal discussion where participants are encouraged to ask study-related questions, explore options for navigating courses of study; and share tips and tricks to manage a work, study, home balance. No registrations are required.

    Clinical Assessor Program

    For Hospital Basic Life Support (HBLS) & Manual Tasks (MT) Assessing

    This study day is part of a 3-day program, which provides nurses in the clinical area, who have assessment and remedial coaching responsibilities, the knowledge and skills to conduct Hospital Basic Life Support (HBLS) and/or Manual Task (MT) mandatory competency assessments, usually conducted on MARS or Core Competency days.

    To become a HBLS assessor, participants should also attend ARC ALS1 conducted by MET education.

    To become a MT Assessor, participants should also attend the MT Assessor day, conducted by L&D. This must occur before/prior to this day.

    Note: To achieve assessor status, completion of a final workplace assessment (for MT) and a MARS assessment (for HBLS) is required.

    Learning objectives At the conclusion of this study day, the learner will be able to

    Understand the assessment process for HBLS and MT assessing, and become familiar with assessment documentation.

    Utilise a framework of Set-Dialogue-Closure and the 4step approach to skills teaching.

    Practice and conduct effective and timely feedback and remedial coaching.

    Build confidence in their ability as an assessor.

    Who should attend Essential for substantive and acting Staff Development Nurse (SDN). Nurses nominated by their SDN or Nurse Manager.

    Clinical Program

    This program provides a follow on from ‘The (not so) secret guide to falls management’ Clinical program. It is designed to provide staff with knowledge and skills to assess patients with Falls risks, minimise the risk of falls injury and manage actual fall events. Sessions are fun and interactive; actual falls events are discussed and investigated. Sessions are delivered by multidisciplinary Falls subject matter experts and are based on the Australian and Safety and Quality Council Best Practice Guidelines for Preventing Falls

    Preceptor (Teaching on the Run TOTR Day 1) Professional Program

    This program provides three (3) workshops from the TOTR series developed by TELL Centre, Smart Moves Consultancy. It is designed for any nurse or health care professional that precept, teaches, access, supervises and provide feedback to colleagues, undergraduate students, new graduates, post graduate students or new staff in the healthcare setting.

    Clinical Teaching

    Assessment

    It is designed as a blended learning format which includes pre-reading activities and enables participants to apply sound teaching and learning principles. This includes online preparation and presentations by participants, group discussions and interactive activities. It is delivered by accredited TOTR inter-professional facilitators. Participants may choose to attend TOTR individual sessions or the full day.

    Learning objectives At the conclusion of the study day, the learner will be able to:

    Understand the importance in planning for and recognising opportunities for teaching and learning experiences in the clinical area

    Develop strategies that support learners

    Build confidence in own abilities to be a clinical teacher.

    Who should attend? All substantive and acting Staff Development Nurses (SDN), Preceptors, Clinical Supervisors and Clinical Facilitators.

    All nurses and health care professionals working in a healthcare service, who are interested in teaching, supervision and assessment.

    Clinical Program This interactive program is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinical staff that manage and provide patient care. Delivered by clinical experts with focus on the overview and management of pressure injuries.
