3.1 Interfaces for Central Battery, Ringing and Cri-terion VoltagesTwo actual battery voltages and a reserve battery voltage can be connected to thePIA unit. The two battery voltages are combined by diodes in the unit. The centralbattery voltage can vary within –20...–72 V DC.

The central battery voltages are connected to the units via the protective switch ofthe PIA unit, the bus A and the motherboard of the equipment cartridge. Theswitch also provides overcurrent protection.

Through the PIA unit, the central battery voltage can be connected to one to threeequipment cartridges, depending on the loads of the units. If the central batteryvoltage is connected through the flat cable bus A and connector P3, the total cur-rent consumption of the units can be 4 A at the maximum, and if it is connectedthrough the bus A at the Euroconnector P5, the total current consumption of theunits can be 2.2 A at the maximum.

The ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equipment use are con-nected to the units via the fuses and either the flat cable bus B or the bus B at theEuroconnector P5.

3.2 AlarmsThe alarm relays and LEDs in the PIA unit are controlled from the unit cards in theequipment cartridges. The alarm controls are transmitted via the bus A.

The purpose of the alarm LEDs is to give a visual indication of the cartridge ormounting frame in which the faulty unit is located. The red LED indicates anA–alarm, the yellow LEDs indicate B– and D–alarms.

An alarm state can be transferred to the centralized alarm monitoring system aseither a ground contact or current loop. The selection is performed by jumperstrappings.

If battery voltages are cut off, an A–alarm is obtained via the relay, and if thereserve battery voltage is connected, the red alarm LED A will also be lit.

If the +5 V auxiliary voltage of the power supply in the PIA unit becomes faulty, aB–alarm is obtained.

Figure 4 Principle of PIA unit power supply

The PIA unit contains a power supply unit which generates an auxiliary voltagefor the units and a voltage for the alarm LEDs and relays of the PIA unit. By meansof the auxiliary voltage, a unit can also give a visual alarm if its own power supplybecomes faulty. If the reserve battery voltage is connected, the power supply of thePIA unit will operate in case the actual battery voltage supply is cut off. The powersupply has been mounted in a metal case in order to attenuate disturbances.

The input voltage range of the power supply is wide (–20...–72 V DC). The pri-mary and secondary voltages of the circuit are galvanically separated from eachother. The switching power supply operates in current mode with a switching fre-quency of approx. 150 kHz.

3.5 CapacitorsThe capacitors in the PIA unit function as an energy store by means of which theequipment-specific power supply units can operate also during short–term volt-age outages. The hold times depend on the loads of the units and the central batteryvoltage. If the total load of the units is 60 W, the hold time with the nominal batteryvoltage of 24 V is 1.4 ms and with the battery voltage of 48 V it is 17 ms.

4.1 Installation MethodsThe PIA unit can be installed into:

 a separate PIA cartridge TF 21466 (10 T)

the same equipment cartridge as the telecommunication units.

If the PIA unit is installed into a separate PIA cartridge, connection to the equip-ment cartridges is made through unit connectors P3 and P4 using the flat cablesdelivered along with the unit. The external battery and alarm interfaces can beconnected directly to the PIA unit connectors J1 and J7 without any RFI filters.

If the PIA unit is installed into the same equipment cartridge as the telecommuni-cation units, connection to the units is made via the back connector P5 and themotherboard of the cartridge. No flat cables are connected to the PIA unit. Whenthis installation method is used, the PIA unit feed connections must be shieldedusing the Power Supply Line TV 21634.

In a 20 T equipment cartridge, the PIA unit is mounted furthermost on the left tofacilitate routing of the wires. The unit then takes two 5 T unit locations. In a 40 Tcartridge, the PIA unit can be mounted also in the fourth unit location, in whichcase it takes only one unit location of the cartridge.

In the wall mounting shelves, the PIA unit is always installed in the equipmentcartridge. If the PIA unit is used for feeding several cartridges, Wall InstallationBuses A and B, TV 21635 and TV 21636, are to be used. These are connected tothe connectors at the top edge on the back of the equipment cartridges.

4.2 Installation Stages The PIA cartridge or the equipment cartridge is inserted in the mounting

frame or on the wall mounting shelf and fixed with a locking screw.

The flat cable buses are connected to the connectors of the equipment car-tridges. (On the use of buses, refer to sections 3.5 and 3.6).

The required settings are made on the PIA unit:

The connection of the relay output alarms is selected by terminal stripNR2. (On the connection of alarms, refer to section 3.7).

Connection of supply voltages is selected by shorting parts of connec-tors J2...J4 (refer to sections 3.3 and 3.4).

Fuses F1...F3 are changed if required. Varistor VDR6 is added if required.

The power supply lines, if they are to be used, are mounted on the groundingplate of the equipment cartridges (refer to Operating Instructions for thePower Supply Line appended to these instructions).

The screw part of the PIA unit connector J7 is detached and the conductors ofthe alarm circuit (the PIA unit in a separate PIA cartridge) or the Power Sup-ply Lines (the PIA unit in the equipment cartridge) are connected to it.

The PIA unit in placed on the unit guides, the screw part of the connector J7 isattached, the possible flat cable buses are connected and the unit is inserted inits place in the cartridge.

The screw part of the connector J1 is detached and the supply lines (PIA in aseparate PIA cartridge) or the Power Supply Lines (PIA in the equipment car-tridge) are connected.

The alarm lines and supply voltages are connected to the cable terminal con-nectors of the Power Supply Lines.

The screw part of the connector J1 is attached to its place.

Chapter 1General

The AC/DC Power Interface Adapter (AC/DC PIA) serves as an interface pointfor mains voltages, ringing and criterion voltages, and alarms when Nokia NDgeneration equipment is installed into wall mounting shelves or mounting frames.

The voltage fed to the transmission equipment is the output voltage of the AC/DCpower supply in the unit. The nominal output voltage of the AC/DC power supplyis 48 VDC but its adjustment range is 43...60 VDC. If a back-up battery is used, theoutput voltage is adjusted to match the back-up battery voltage.

It is possible to charge only one battery from the AC/DC power supply, owing tothe separating diodes on the AC/DC PIA unit.

The AC/DC PIA is switched on and off by plugging the mains cable to the unit ordetaching it.

Important!

This unit can only be plugged to an outlet with protected earth contacts.

In EMC installations AC/DC PIA (TV 21630.01 / TV 21631.51) must not beinstalled to equipment cartridge containing other equipment. In order to fulfill theEMC requirements the PIA unit must be installed using the 10 T PIA Cartridge(TF 21466.09) or a separate 20 T EMC cartridge (housing only the PIA Unit).

Note 1. Before connecting the mains voltage to the unit, check that theinput voltage selector is set correctly 220 VAC.

2. Start-up of the unit takes a few seconds.

3.1 Interfaces for Back-Up and/or Reserve BatteryVoltages, Ringing and Criterion VoltagesTwo actual battery voltages and a reserve battery voltage can be connected to theAC/DC PIA unit. The two battery voltages are combined by diodes in the unit. When the actual battery voltages are used at the same time, both positive pole con-ductors must be attached to the same point, i.e. to J1/10 because J1/9 is used foranother purpose.

There are no fuses for external batteries in the unit, and therefore a separate fusemust be installed for each battery.

The generated (and possibly battery-protected) voltages are connected to the unitsvia bus A and the motherboard of the equipment cartridge. Both the AC/DC powersupply and the DC/DC power supply (+5 V) provide overcurrent protection.

The output voltage generated in the AC/DC PIA unit can be connected to 1...3equipment cartridges, depending on the loads of the units.

The ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equipment use are con-nected to the units via the fuses and either the flat cable bus B or bus B at Eurocon-nector P5.

3.2 Back-Up Battery SelectionThe nominal voltage of the battery system shall be 48 V. A system where fourpieces of 12 V batteries are connected in series is suitable. A sealed lead acid bat-tery is recommended as it is easy to use and needs no maintenance.

The following rule of thumb can be used as a basis for defining the capacity of theback-up battery: the maximum charging current is one tenth of the batterycapacity in amperes. As the maximum current obtained from the power supplies is1.8 A, the capacity of the battery is 18 Ah.

The capacity of the battery can be even greater. If a battery system with lowercapacity is desired, it should be made sure that the charging current is not too high.Normally, most of the current obtained from the power supply is consumed by theequipment itself, whereas the battery receives only a fraction of the current. Theequipment consumes most of the current, because the DC/DC power supplies areable to operate even with lower voltages than the battery voltage. Thus also small-sized and low-capacity batteries (e.g. 4 x 12 V 1.2 Ah) can be used after checkingthe correct charging current.

Note Do not forget to install a suitable fuse to the battery cable!

3.3 AlarmsThe alarm relays and LEDs in the AC/DC PIA unit are controlled from the unitcards in the equipment cartridges. The alarm controls are transmitted via bus A.

Page 118: 21090.Xx (C33003_20 D0) Operating Instructions

Operation

NTC C33392001SE_A0 Copyright Nokia Telecommunications Oy 7

The purpose of the alarm LEDs is to give a visual indication of the cartridge ormounting frame in which the faulty unit is located. The red LED indicates anA-alarm, the yellow LEDs indicate B- and D-alarms.

From the relays an alarm state can be transferred to the centralized alarm monitor-ing system as either a ground contact or current loop. The selection is performedby jumper strappings (NR2). See Figure 3.

If the 48 V voltage is cut off, an A-alarm is obtained via the relay, and if the reservebattery voltage is connected, the red alarm LED A will also be lit.

If the +5 V auxiliary voltage of the power supply in the AC/DC PIA unit becomesfaulty, a B-alarm is obtained. If the +12 V of the power supply becomes faulty, anA-alarm is obtained but the alarm LED will not be lit.

3.4 Interface for Service Terminal Battery ChargingA battery voltage is obtained from connector P6 for charging the Service Terminalbattery via fuse F1. Connector pin a3 is positive and c3 negative.

The power supply unit of the Service Terminal is able to charge its batteries frominput voltages of –20...–72 VDC.

3.5 AC-Low Indication (TV 21630.51 only)The AC-Low monitor circuit (ACL) is used to supervise the mains input voltage.Rectified and filtered mains voltage is compared with a reference voltage. Thecomparator output controls an optocoupler, which provides high isolationvoltage. Hysteresis of the comparator prevents oscillation.

The user can adjust the voltage at which the ACL operates (potentiometer RT1 onthe component board of the AC-Low monitor). The suitable value of the voltagedepend on the nominal value, accuracy and quality of the mains voltage.

The AC-Low indication output can be used for an external alarm logic or relay. The maximum current from the optocoupler output transistor is approximately 0.2A and the breakdown voltage is 32 V. The collector of the optocoupler is internallyconnected to the positive voltage of the power supply. The emitter is connected tothe output pin 6/J1 in the AC / DC PIA unit. See principle in Figure 4.

The alarm limit is set at the factory to 183 VAC 1 % and the hysteresis is 7 V, sothe alarm will expire at 190 VAC.

3.6 AC/DC Power SupplyThe AC/DC power supply unit is operating in a switching mode principle andcontrolled with the pulse width modulation. This power supply converts the mainsvoltage 220 VAC to a DC voltage, which nominal value is 48 V. The input isprovided with an EMI filter and a varistor (VDR) to attenuate disturbances and toprovide overvoltage protection. An NTC resistor rejects the inrush current at astart-up.

It is possible to adjust the output voltage by potentiometer RT1 from 43 V to 60 V,approximately. The potentiometer is inside of the power supply metal case, seeFigure 1. The output voltage is set to 54 V at the factory to suit the sealed lead acidbatteries which are normally used.

The unit is provided with a facility named ”Boost operation” for faster charging ofbatteries after a mains failure. The operation increases the output voltage of thepower supply to approx. 60 V. The voltage is dependent on the positions ofpotentiometers RT1 and RT2. The voltage is adjusted to the desired value by RT2after the normal voltage is first set by RT1. The operation is activated byinterconnecting pins 10 and 9 of the AC/DC PIA connector J1, which causes thepositive pole of the power supply to be connected to the Boost line.

The output voltage slightly changes as the output current changes. This enablesparalleling of the AC/DC PIA units when required.

Figure 5 Principle of the DC/DC power supply in AC/DC PIA

The AC/DC PIA unit contains a power supply unit which generates an auxiliaryvoltage +5 V for the units and a +12 V voltage for the alarm LEDs and relays ofthe AC/DC PIA unit. By means of the auxiliary voltage, a unit can also give avisual alarm if its own power supply becomes faulty. If the reserve battery voltageis connected, the DC/DC power supply will also operate in case the actual batteryvoltage supply is cut off.

The input voltage range of the power supply is wide (–20...–72 VDC). The primaryand secondary voltages of the circuit are galvanically separated from each other. The switching mode power supply operates in current mode with a switchingfrequency of approximately 300 kHz.

The input of the power supply unit contains a fusible resistor serving as ashort-circuit protector if the power supply unit does not limit the current. Thepower supply is provided with a hybrid circuit containing, among other things, astart-upcircuitry, a pulse-width modulator, and a switching transistor (MOSFET).

3.8 Hold-Up TimeThe energy stored in the input and output capacitors of the AC/DC power supplyprovides a reasonable hold-up time.

3.9 Power LEDThe main circuit board includes a green LED for indicating the operation of theAC/DC power supply. Operation of the LED can be changed by a jumper setting. This jumper setting is also used to select whether the power to the batteries and tothe telecommunications equipment is fed straight or through a separating diode.

(min. 200 mm, see Figure 11) and strip the sheath, aluminium belt and plasticfoil while being careful not to mix the pairs.

”Comb” according to colour code instructions.

3.3 Connection of Wires to Connector Perform the connection in the order specified by the unit–specific connection

instructions.

In 1/1 Euroconnector the wire must extend approx. 65 mm past the connectorpin to allow for stripping and possible connection changes (see Figure 15).

Strip wires to wire–wrap length (25 mm).

Perform the connections using the wire–wrap technique.

Protect the uninsulated wire by a protective sleeve.

When the connection is complete, the protective case is pushed into place.Make sure that the pins exit through the right holes.

Attach the case to the cable by a cable tie.

Mark the cable by wire marks delivered with the connector.

NTC DTM40–0271–REC1 Copyright Nokia Telecommunications Oy 19

Chapter 5Using a Grounding Protective Sleeve

If a cabling connector is to be disconnected and reconnected frequently, a break-age may occur in the aluminum foil of the cable which weakens the EMC protec-tion. In these kinds of applications, it is advisable to place a grounding protectivesleeve on top of the aluminum foil. It is fastened by cable ties and a shrinkingsleeve. Please see the following installation instructions.

Note Different stripping lengths for 1/1– and 1/4–Euroconnectors

Installation instructions for protective sleeveThe numbering of the steps corresponds to the numbering used in Figures 16 and17.

1. Strip the outer sheath of the cable on the length indicated in item 1. Be carefulnot to damage the aluminum foils and grounding wire underneath.

2. Remove the outer aluminum foil on the entire stripping length. Cut the inneraluminum foil acting as EMC protection as indicated in item 2. Do not cut thegrounding wire, but turn its entire length around the inner aluminum foil.

3. Pull the grounding protective sleeve on top of the aluminum foil and ground-ing wire, extending it approx. 15 mm on top of the outer sheath of the cable.

4. Place pieces of shrinking sleeve on top of the protective sleeve at both ends ofit and shrink them with a hot air blower. Use a shrinking sleeve with as small adiameter as possible to avoid having to use a long heating time which maydamage the wire insulators. Secure the shrinking sleeve outside the connectorwith a cable tie. Tie the other shrinking sleeve with a cable tie when encasingthe connector.

5. Connect the Euroconnector according to is connection instructions.

Chapter 6Cable Branching

If required, the pair cables can be branched into two or more wire bunches.

Tools and accessories: hot air blowermetal pivot approx. 7 mmTX 21481 Branching Set for Pair Cablesfor approx. 20 cables

The branching is made in the horizontal part of the cable above or below thecartridge.

Dimension the cable according to the location of the connector furthest fromthe branching point.

Open the cable up to the branching point and remove protective sheaths whilebeing careful not to mix the pairs.

Define the length of the protective sleeves for the wire bunches to be attachedto the connectors of the unit and burn their ends to prevent them from ravel-ling by using a hot air blower and a metal pivot appropriate for the sleeve size.Slide the protective sleeves into place.

Protect the branching point by a cable tie and a shrinking sleeve (see Figure18).

Shrink the shrinking sleeve to its place by heating with the hot air blower. Donot overheat the cable sheath.
