Preface

This 21st Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference (AFMC) marks 56 years of the series and the third hosted by the University of Adelaide. The AFMC series has established a strong tradition of providing a diverse forum for the presentation of the latest Australasian, as well as international, fl uid mechanics research.

This 21st AFMC is organised by the

University of Adelaide in collaboration

with the Australasian Fluid Mechanics

Society and brings together an

international group of scientists,

engineers and educators with common

interests in fl uid mechanics. The

conference covers a broad range of fl uid

mechanics research and applications,

with more than 300 papers organised

into 30 themes, with many of themes

highlighted by our seven exceptional

keynote speakers. Of the total of 330

delegates, 45% are graduate students

and 20% are international delegates

from 24 countries.

All papers included in the proceedings

have undergone formal peer review in

accordance with the Higher Education

Research Data Collection requirements

of the Australian Government. Full

papers were invited on the basis of

submitted abstracts after review by the

Local Organising Committee.

Submitted papers were externally

reviewed by independent experts in the

relevant fi eld under the coordination

of the committee. Final acceptance was

dependent on satisfactory response to

the external review. Presentations on

the basis of the committee-reviewed

abstract were also accepted.

Special thanks are extended to the

Local Organising committee for their

technical oversight, particularly

Timothy Lau for his tireless work over

the last year, the invited speakers,

contributing authors, reviewers and

participants, for continuing to make

the AFMC the premier fl uid mechanics

meeting of our region. We acknowledge

the support and sponsorship of the

Adelaide Convention Centre in

providing the venue, our Bronze

Sponsor LEAP Australia and our many

exhibitors. Thanks are also extended

to our brilliant professional conference

organisers at All Occasions Group.

It is our privilege and honour to host

the AFMC in Adelaide for the third

time and we trust the Conference is an

enjoyable and interesting experience

for all.

Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society

About the AFMS

The AFMS is an independent non-profi t

society that supports and fosters interest

in fl uid mechanics and related disciplines

in the Australasian region. This is done

by providing a forum for people with

a common interest, and by publishing

or promoting relevant material. The

Society aims to actively represent the

views of its members to Government,

institutes and the public. It supports all

those with an interest in fl uid mechanics

including researchers and professionals.

The AFMS is charged with overseeing

and supporting the Australasian Fluid

Mechanics Conference (AFMC) series.

The membership consists of those

members of the Society who have

indicated their wish to join the Society

and who annually retain membership

though the payment of designated dues.

The AFMS was incorporated in Victoria,

Australia on 14 October 2008. Biennial

membership of the society membership

has been factored into the AFMC

conference registration fees.

Society Fellowships

There are currently twenty AFMS fellows

and another seven elected fellows will be

announced at the 21st AFMC dinner.

2018 Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the

Society will be held during the 21st AFMC

at 12:30pm, Wednesday 12th December.

human cardiovascular and pulmonary fl ows. He has supervised 55

completed Ph.D. dissertations including those of 17 professors.

Professor Eaton co-founded the biennial International Symposia

on Turbulence and Shear Flow Phenomena. He has won multiple

Stanford awards for teaching excellence, the NSF Presidential

Young Investigator Award, and the Senior Award from the

International Society of Multiphase Flow. He is a Fellow of the

Lecture Title: Modelling and Computation of interfaces in Turbulent Dispersed Flows.

Alfredo Soldati is Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Technische

Universitat Wien (Austria). He also maintains a minor

appointment with the University of Udine (Italy). The focus of the

research of his group is on multiphase dispersed fl ows, trying to

capture the inherent multiscale aspects from the fundamentals

to applications. Numerical Simulations have been recently

complemented by experimental activity. Research on turbulent

dispersed fl ows of particles, bubbles, droplets and fi bers applies to

industrial problems and environmental protection.

Dr. Soldati is Rector nominated at the International Center for

Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Melbourne 1989-1990

and Stanford University and NASA Ames, USA, 1990-1991,

prior to being appointed as Research Scientist, 1991-1992, and

Senior Research Scientist at the CSIRO in 1992. In 1993 Julio was

appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Monash University, Melbourne,

promoted to Reader in 1998, then to Professor with a Personal

Chair in Mechanical Engineering in 2001.

Professor Soria is a Fellow of the Australasian Fluid Mechanics

Society and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. He is also member of the

APS and EUROMECH. His research interest are in turbulent shear

fl ow physics and shear fl ow instability, non-intrusive laser-based

experimental methods and the direct numerical simulations of

turbulence.

Speakers

Prof Yvonne StokesThe University of Adelaide

Lecture Title: Extensional fl ow theory with application to fi bre drawing.

Yvonne Stokes is an ARC Future Fellow and a Professor in the

School of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Adelaide.

She completed a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science at

Murdoch University, and Honours in Applied Mathematics at the

University of Adelaide while working as a technical draftsperson.

She then did her PhD in Applied Mathematics and held an ARC

Postdoctoral Fellowship (2000-2002) before obtaining a tenurable

Lecturer position at The University of Adelaide where she has

worked to the present time.

Yvonne enjoys mathematical modelling, particularly where

differential equations are employed. She has research interests in

the fi eld of fl uid dynamics and works primarily on free-surface

and viscous fl ow problems. She is also interested in problems in

mathematical biology, in which fi eld she has worked on nutrient

transport and uptake and, more recently, chemical signalling, with

applications in assisted reproduction technologies.

Yvonne is a member of the Australian Academy of Science

National Committee for Mechanical and Engineering Sciences and

the Chair of the Women in Mathematics Special Interest Group

(WIMSIG) of the Australian Mathematical Society.
