All are Welcome!!!

Dear Friends,

Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. wishes to thank you for

your donations to our food pantry during the month of

December. They totaled 400 pounds. The food pantry was very

busy over the holiday season and we expect to remain busy in

the upcoming months. Changes in the economy have led to

record numbers of families needing to access our food pantry. Without ongoing community support we would not be able to

continue to meet this need. Your generosity is truly

appreciated.

MICA hopes that we can continue to work together to make a

difference in Story County.

Sincerely,

Nora Lueck

Family Development Director

Perhaps you've heard the story about the small-town doctor who always bragged about the big fish he

caught. It was hard to believe, but no one could catch heav-

ier fish than him; he even had pictures of them hanging

from his personal fish scale showing the weight. One day while fishing, he got an emergency call that a woman had

gone into labor at home and he needed to get over there.

After the baby was born, the family had nothing to weigh it with so the doctor pulled out his fish scale. The baby came

in at twenty-six pounds, fourteen ounces. His prideful ways

were revealed. "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of

men." Has anyone ever made a better offer? As Jesus began

his ministry, he made a very conscious decision to surround

himself not with disciples who considered themselves reli-gious leaders of the day, but rather with ordinary men, men

who worked hard, led simple lives, and whose minds were

open to a new way of life in Christ. They abandoned their nets in order to take up a life of evangelization. The "nets"

of salvation they will offer will in fact give us freedom from

sin. We are all members of the family of God, and

Christ stands at the center of this calling. We are taught in

the Catechism of the Catholic Church that the kingdom be-

longs to the poor and lowly, which means those who have accepted it with humble hearts (CCC 544). Throughout his

life, he lived among the poor, the sick, and the sinners. He

called his disciples from among them, and promised that the last shall be first. Today, you are invited to put down those

things which have no real meaning, and take up the Gospel

of Christ into your heart.

Jesus said to his apostles: ―Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel…‖ Jesus expects his followers both

then and now to evangelize, to give witness to Him by

words and actions. Proclaiming the Good News by our

daily pattern of living is key to Christian stewardship. And as the practice of stewardship ultimately leads to

evangelization, we might ask ourselves: In what ways

can we evangelize to family, friends, neighbors and strangers alike through our daily pattern of living?

Prayer for New President

O God, stir up your Spirit to inspire, encourage, and sustain President Barack Obama as he assumes leadership

of our nation. Grant him the wisdom and courage to

address the many challenges facing this nation and this

world. Give him the audacity to propose bold and difficult

solutions. Guide him and all of our leaders to fashion a

government that works for the well being of all our your

people. A government based on hope and justice; a

government that forms one nation under God, where all

people are created equal. Use the outpouring of

involvement and goodwill among Americans, young and

old, black and white, to infuse hope into all citizens, that

all might work for a better nation and a better world. We pray for President Barack Obama. Give him the graces he

needs and God bless the United States of America. Amen.

The Bible says we are made in the image and likeness of God. What does this mean?

The first step to answer this question is to realize that the

―Image of God‖ does not refer to a physical resemblance, or

to appearance of any kind. The belief that the image of God

is a physical resemblance has the potential to lead to all sorts

of problems. For example, which race is most completely in

God‘s Image? Are women less in God‘s image because we

refer to God in male terms? Are people with physical

disabilities less in the image of God because they lack the

completeness of physical health? The fact is that all of humanity is created in the image of God. God‘s image is

instilled within our very nature.

There are three basic elements of human nature that are

specifically in God‘s image existing within the soul of every

human being.

The first element is the intellect. The intellect is the human

faculty to think in spiritual ways. The ability to think about

abstract ideas, the ability to ponder mysteries of the spiritual

world, and ultimately the ability to ponder the true essence of existence are all abilities that arise from the intellect.

The second element given to us in the image of God is the

will. The will allows us to choose freely. This free choice

gives us the power to create who we become. Our choices

help to create our character, and ultimately our destinies.

Finally, humankind is meant to live in relationships of love

with each other, in reflection of the relationship of Divine

Love inherent in the Holy Trinity. Just as the Father, Son,

and Holy Spirit exist together in a unity of perfect self-giving

to each other, human beings are meant to give themselves as gifts to one another. This is evident from the very beginning,

in the book of Genesis. The only time God says that

something is not good in the stories of creation is ―It is not

good that man should be alone.‖ Why is this not good? It‘s

not good, not only because Adam was lonely, but also

because he was not a true image of God by himself.

We are created in the image of God to make God‘s full glory

present to the physical, visible world. However, human

beings are more than just art pieces expressing God‘s

presence. We are created to live as free, loving, thinking beings in relationship with God.
