  • The Virginia-class SchoonersChesapeake Bay Space Industries, the commercial

    shipbuilding subsidiary of Newport News Space Shipbuild-ing, began development of a small transport ship in Augustof 2244. The new vessel was created to meet the needs ofusers from the well-traveled space lanes to the outer fron-tiers. Designed as a multi-purpose transport, the ship wouldpossess fuel sufficient for four weeks of continuous opera-tions. The ship would also be capable of operating in areaswithout servicing and refueling facilities. Minimal mainte-nance and low operating costs were significant features ofthe new design. The ship design was approved by acorporate review board in February of 2245, with construc-tion of the prototype commencing on 2 May 2245 at the newshipyards orbiting Mars. The new starship was completedsixteen months later and was christened the "Virginia".

    The twelve months following completion of the S.S.Virginia saw the vessel undergo numerous test flights duringthe ship's proving trials. The company also used this time tomarket the transport to prospective customers, comparingthe ship to the stalwart wooden "schooners" of eighteenth-century America. The Virginia successfully completed alltests and was certified for production on 3 November 2246.The prototype was retained by Chesapeake Bay SpaceIndustries for company use and as a marketing vehicle. TheVirginia-class starships were categorized, primarily throughcorporate advertising, as "schooners." Full-scale productionof the Virginia began in June of 2247.

    Ten firm orders for the Virginia were received byChesapeake Bay Space Industries prior to the completion ofthe ship's trials. The orders came largely as a result of theneeds created by the agriculture boom on Ellis, which hadbegun in 2245. The first four production vessels weredelivered to an Australian firm, Parramatta Transport Pty,Ltd., with the next six ships going to Marshall Space Lines,an American company. The number of orders for theschooner slowly increased until the Australian Boom onBotany Bay in 2250. The influx of orders created by thisevent far exceeded production capacity. Production slowedfrom 2255, and was finally halted in 2271. A total of 212schooners were produced during the ship's twenty-five yearproduction run.

    Operated throughout the known universe, Virginia-class schooners were particularly successful in the Frenchand the American Arms. There the schooners transportedneeded personnel and supplies to settlements andwatchposts. Though obsolete by most standards, the schoo-ner's attributes made profitable operations possible for thecompanies using them.

    Outbreak of war with the Kafers has seen the schoo-ner acquire the new roles of convoy vessel and blockaderunner. With logistics becoming a serious problem, civilianmerchantmen were called on to relieve the strain on theovertaxed military supply network. The merchant captainswere highly responsive to the proposal, knowing as they didthe desperate situation of those resisting Kafer occupation.Therefore, the decision was made to build convoys using asmany of the same type of transport as possible. The shipswould then be combined with whatever escorts could befound to defend them. The schooner captains were veryenthusiastic and quickly offered their services, undeterredby their ships' lack of armament, armor and performance.Thus originated the "Virginia- class Convoys."

    Convoy DK-001: 20 SEP - 3 OCT 2301

    The first Virginia convoy departed Vogelheim on 20September, its destination being Dunkelheim. Four schoo-ners of German registry, the S.S. Ludwigslust, S.S.Havelberg, S.S. Uffenheim and S.S. Creussen, carriedreentry cargo containers which would be launched outsideof Dunkelheim's orbit. Escorting the transports were fourHampton-class destroyer escorts of the American SpaceForce. Upon entry into the system, the convoy was detectedby a Kafer sentinel station. Detection was confirmed by theappearance of a Kafer Alpha-class battleship. Although thebattleship's main weaponry was disabled in a previous en-gagement, secondary batteries were sufficient to destroythe U.S.S. Sundance (DE 154) and disable the U.S.S.Stockton (DE 156). Unable to repair the ship, the Stocktonwas ultimately abandoned by her crew. The two remainingescorts, U.S.S. Ashland (DE 152) and U.S.S. Bloomfield(DE 155) managed to inflict serious damage on the Kafership, forcing it to retire.

    As the escorts battled the battleship, three Kaferfighters caught the S.S. Ludwigslust and the S.S. Creussenunaware and destroyed them. Fortunately, the fightersthemselves were surprised and destroyed by the two re-maining escorts, allowing the S.S. Uffenheim and the S.S.Havelberg to launch their cargo containers. The two escortsand the two schooners then proceeded to Dunkelheim'sthird planet to discharge their drives; the schooners wererequired to refuel the escorts so that all the ships couldreturn to Vogelheim. The escorts arrived at Vogelheim on1 October and the schooners arrived 3 October. The firstVirginia convoy was classified as a failure, as no verificationcould be made that any of the cargo containers had reachedtheir intended destinations.

  • Convoy BB-010: 12 MAR - 25 MAR 2302

    The French registered schooners S.S. St. Malo, S.S.Amorica, and S.S. Papillon, combined with Hampton-classdestroyer escorts U.S.S. Bellevue(DE 157), U.S.S. Hartford(DE159) and U.S.S. Catskill(DE 161), staged out of DM+362436 on 12 March. The convoy was to deliver cargo to thewatchpost at Beta Comae Berenices. Upon arrival in-system, the ships were attacked by several Kafer fighters.The fighters were quickly destroyed by the destroyer es-corts, but U.S.S. Catskill was lost to a determined Kafer pilot.After the supply ships delivered their cargo, all ships pro-ceeded to Beta Comae Berenices 6 to discharge theirdrives. Convoy BB-010 departed the system on 20 March,arriving back at DM+36 2436 by 25 March. Despite the lossof the U.S.S. Catskill, the mission was considered a com-plete success.

    Convoy BV-006: 14 MAR - 29 MAR 2302

    Convoy BV-006 originated at DM+36 2436, consist-ing of two French, two German and two British schooners.Escorting the convoy were four American Hampton-classdestroyer escorts. The convoy arrived in the Beta CanumVenaticorum system on 21 March. Discharging their drivesat Beta Canum Venaticorum VI, the ten ships proceeded tothe cargo drop point at Beta Canum Venaticorum IV.Approximately half of the reentry cargo containers had beenlaunched when sensors detected a Kafer convoy fleetentering the system. The convoy commander decided toabort the mission and return to DM+36 2436. Convoy BV-006 departed 23 March, the escorting ships arriving 25March and the schooners on 29 March. The mission wasclassified as a partial success, sources on Beta CanumVenaticorum IV confirming receipt of most of the cargocontainers launched.

    Convoy DK-020: 18 MAR - 22 MAR 2302

    Three Virginia-class schooners and three Hampton-class destroyer escorts comprised the convoy designatedDK-020. The merchantmen were to deliver supplies fromDM+36 2436 to Dunkelheim. The schooners departed on18 March, followed by the escorts on 19 March. The sixvessels arrived in the Dunkelheim system on 20 March.Unfortunately, a Kafer Epsilon-class cruiser and two trans-ports arrived at approximately the same time. The Americandestroyer escorts engaged the Kafer ships, providing ascreen for the merchants as they retreated. The cruiser wasdestroyed by the escorts; doing so required the expenditureof all their SIM-14s however. Additionally, U.S.S. Hampton(DE 150) and U.S.S. Ellsworth (DE 160) each sustainedpowerplant damage. U.S.S. Burlington (DE 167) was left tocounter the approaching Kafer transports alone. Severalwell-placed shots destroyed one transport and drove theother off; the time gained enabled the Hampton and theEllsworth to effect repairs and join the Burlington. Allvessels returned to DM+36 2436 safely. As the schoonerswere unable to deliver their cargoes, the mission wasclassified as a failure.

    Convoy ZM-009: 18 MAR - 3 APR 2302

    The convoy was composed of six American schooners; noescorts were available for the mission. The schoonersarrived unscathed, each delivering one thousand tons ofbadly needed supplies. The convoy then discharged itsdrives and returned to Vogelheim, arriving in-system on 3April. The mission was a complete success, due in largepart to the schooner's suitability for such quick turn-aroundmissions.

    Convoy UM-015:17 MAR - 30 MAR 2302

    Convoy UM-015 originated at DM+36 2436, with thetask of delivering supplies to Vice Admiral Rochemont'sfleet as it attempted to retake 61 Ursae Majoris. The fourVirginia-class schooners and their three Hampton-classdestroyer escorts arrived on 21 March, roughly one daybehind the arrival of the invasion fleet. However, the convoyhad the misfortune of encountering a Kafer Delta-classBattleship and two Oscar class transports withdrawing fromthe system. The escorts engaged the Kafer ships immedi-ately, screening the schooners. Their tactics allowed themerchant ships to reach the fleet, but the U.S.S. Paxton(DE158), U.S.S. Glenrock(DE 168) and U.S.S. Redding (DE169) were all destroyed in the battle. The schoonersreturned to DM+36 2436 on 30 March. The supply missionwas considered a success, despite the loss of three shipsand seventy-two men of the American Space Force.

    Convoy HS-003: 22 MAR - 3 APR 2302

    Three schooners of British registry and three Hamp-ton-class destroyer escorts departed DM+36 2436 withHenry's Star as their destination. Arriving 27 March, theconvoy was heading towards the system's binary star whenit was intercepted by four Kafer Golf-class fighters. Theconvoy scattered, the schooners continuing toward the starwhile the American warships attacked the fighters. Thetransports reached the star safely and began to dischargetheir drives, only to be jumped by five more Kafer fighters.S.S. Cup of Gold was destroyed almost immediately, S.S.Nightshade and S.S. Maidenhead dumping their cargocontainers in the hope of cluttering Kafer sensors. Followingthe initial pass, however, the Kafers mysteriously withdrewand disappeared. S.S. Nightshade and S.S. Maidenhead,wary of further attack, returned to DM+36 2436. S.S.Maidenhead arrived on 2 April, followed by S.S. Nightshadeon 3 April. No other ships from Convoy HS-003 returned.The mission was categorized as a failure.

    The seven "Virginia-class Convoys" described representsignificant operations to date. The pairing of Virginia-classschooners with Hampton-class destroyer escorts has provensuccessful thus far, given the difficulties the convoys haveencountered. As the Combined Earth Forces continue theirdrive to recapture Kafer-held systems, the need for suppliesremains high. Virginia-class schooners will continue to beavailable to transport those supplies.

    Convoy ZM-009 departed Vogelheim on 18 Mar 2302and arrived at its destination, DM+36 2436, on 23 Mar 2302.

    THE SHATTERED IMPERIUMThe time is the distant future. In-

    terstellar travel is not only possible, butcommonplace.

    The ruling interstellar power is the Im-perium, a large, human-dominated em-pire more than 1000 years old, encom-passing 11,000 worlds in a region over2000 light-years across.

    But while the Imperium's thousand-year reign has created an illusion ofstrength and lasting power, continuedexpansion and internal pressure havecombined to strain the Imperium's abili-ty to govern to the limit. The thread thatheld the vast Imperium together hasalways been the emperor, the one in-dividual to whom all Imperial citizensultimately owe their loyalty.

    Now the emperor is dead at the handsof an assassin, with no immediate heirsand no clear successors. The emperor'snephew claims the throne; so does hiscousin. Even his assassin claims thethrone. No one knows whom to follow;someone is following each of the claim-ants. Several border regions have lostfaith in the Imperium and have declaredtheir independence. A few neighboringinterstellar powers, learning of the Im-perium's internal chaos, have begun toadvance into unprotected frontierprovinces.

    ning rebellion and splinter empiresTraveller is set. Its role-playing gamerules provide an entire universe to be ex-plored. Players assume any role and anymission in the universe of the future.

    Traveller says that mankind has con-quered the stars, travel between starsystems is commonplace, but the dis-tances involved make interstellar voy-ages take weeks, months, even years.

    The situation is similar to Earth in the18th century. Communication is limitedby the speed of travel, setting the stagefor adventure in a grand fashion with allthe trappings of classic science fiction:star-spanning empires, huge starfleets,interstellar merchants (and interstellarpirates), complex diplomatic maneuvers,and larger-than-life heroes, heroines, andvillains.

    Traveller is the name of the overallgame. MegaTraveller is the name of thisrules set, and is used to differentiate itfrom the 10 years of development andearlier editions that preceded it.
