ABOUT DEVANADI AND OUR APPROACH TO YOGA

OUR MISSION

Devanadi is a school of yoga, tantra and wellness studies that unites a community of holistic, life-loving and bright souls . We empower people with authentic and time-tested tools and teachings to help reach their highest potential . These offerings provide support to study, train/get certified and heal – ultimately bringing light and goodness to all corners of the world, at home and beyond .

WHY STUDY A TRADITION?

Here at Devanadi, we are strong believers in the wisdom, faith, and support that connecting with a living tradition brings to us . Parampara is a word often used to describe the thread of teachings that are transmitted from “one to another” when the dharma, or wisdom, is passed on with integrity .

We encourage you to ask questions and learn more . Keep in mind that our approach is to empower the individual’s highest potential, as opposed to belonging to a community that feels “cult-y” and limiting . We believe that the support gained through svadyaya (self study, self awareness), dharma (the teachings, right action), and sangha (community), help us shed the unwanted parts of ourselves . In turn, we become more like our True Selves; thus, the brighter, stronger and more uplifted all of society becomes .

Devanadi means “sacred rivers .” Studying from a variety of like-minded traditions is what inspires us to merge into that great stream of consciousness that aligns our hearts and minds with the Universal One, and Universal Goodness .

PHILOSOPHY

Yoga means union . Through the performance of postures or “asanas”, breath work or “pranayama” and meditation, one’s body, mind and spirit is restored to proper alignment . Yoga is a unique practice that differs from other forms of exercise because we connect the movement of the body and fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of our breath . Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward . Through this process of inward attention, we learn to recognize our habitual patterns without labeling, judging, or forcing change . We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment . This cultivation of awareness is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a task or goal to be completed .

Tanya, and the teachers of this program, intends to provide an expansive space for all styles of yoga . As the first GREEN yoga business in Minnesota certified with Green Yoga Association, we are committed to eco-friendly and sustainable business practices, as well as raising environmental awareness .

We encourage each student to embark on their own spiritual journey . It is our goal that our teachers will be passionate about helping their students achieve personal growth and provide classes making these ancient healing arts available to all .

9

HISTORY

The Devanadi Yoga Teacher Training & Intensive was founded in 2008 by Tanya Boigenzahn, who has taught yoga since 1996 and practiced since 1993 . However, Tanya has led teacher training workshops and programs via other schools since 2001 . The curriculum has been designed primarily for individuals desiring to teach yoga and earn certification, but also for those wanting to deepen their personal yoga, meditation and spiritual practice . In fact, about half of our students take our trainings more as an intensive study . We tend to attract seekers looking for tools, resources and tradition to help live a fuller, healthier life . Texts such as the Yoga Sutra, Wheels of Life, and The Heart of Yoga are featured in the 235 hour training, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Bhagavad Gita and Yoga & Ayurveda are featured in our 340 hour training .

The school is a Registered School with Yoga Alliance (RYS 200/300) . Upon completion of our initial 235-hour program students will receive a Certificate of Completion and can apply for registration with Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga Teacher at the 200-hour level (RYT 200) . Students may also further their study with our 340-hour program, and may apply for registration with Yoga Alliance at the RYT 500 level .

WHAT DOES “DEVANADI” MEAN?

Deva is often translated as “divine” or “sacred” but it is more correctly understood as a free and shining being - as well as a being in whose presence you become shining and free . Deva is derived from the verbal root div, which connotes brightly shining, and expansive light as well as a certain mood of playfulness . Nadi means “river,” “channel,” “nerves,” or “pathways .” In the body, the ancients described a system of nadis that conduct pranic energy or life force . For yogis, three main nadis are the most important:

1) ida - the left channel relating to lunar energy, intuition, cooling, healing, yin;

2) pingala- the right channel relating to solar energy, physical, active, yang;

3) sushumna - the center channel that when awakened leads to meditation and enlightenment . Thus, we translate “Devanadi” as “Sacred Rivers .”

10

OUR APPROACH TO TEACHING YOGA AT DEVANADI

Our mission at Devanadi is to help students understand and see benefit from the two approaches to yoga listed below . Some workshops may focus more on one particular tradition, depending on the needs of the students in the class . For example, sometimes we need more discipline in our lives (i .e . think the New Year and starting resolutions) . In this case, we might teach a set sequence with a particular energetic effect to help us become more organized in our thoughts and intentions . Other times we just need to break out of our current “funk” and move our energy . In this case, we might teach a particular breath technique throughout the class to help reshape our prana, thereby helping our minds find more balance . Regardless of what is taught at our studio, all of our teachers commit to teaching safe, supported, nurturing classes that speak to all students regardless of their background, yoga experience, injuries or limitations .

Hatha is part of the Tantric path of yoga . Some of the meanings of the word tantra are to stretch beyond all limitations, to shine brightly, to thrive . Tantra sees the world as a manifestation of the most divine healing, or feminine energy, otherwise known as Shakti . In essence, Tantric-style practices help students move past obstacles to help us see that we’re all a part of the same river of life . The word Hatha refers to balancing the energies of the “sun” (“ha,” heating, active, linear, yang) and “moon” (“tha,” cooling, intuitive, healing, yin) within all of us . Specific pranayama (breath work), kriyas (cleansing practices like fire breathing or kapalabhati), visualization of the chakras (energy centers), vinyasa krama (wise progression or sequencing), and meditation are a part of this path . Hatha yoga primarily works with balancing our vital energy, or prana, during practice to help us connect all parts of ourselves and the world together into harmony and balance . This process is called “samyoga .”

Classical Yoga is the yoga of Patanjali, author of the Yoga Sutra . It’s most commonly referred to as the “Ashtanga” or “eight-limbed” path . Styles that come of out this tradition include Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Iyengar yoga, and most vinyasa-style or power yoga practices that we see in many gyms today . Classes often have a variety of Sun Salutations, flowing postures, elements that help to build heat, and many standing poses . Classical yoga primarily works with disciplining the mind, or chitta, during practice to help us separate ourselves from that, which isn’t yogic in our lives . This process is called “viyoga .”SCHOOL FACILITIES, LOCATION & EQUIPMENT

We hope that your experience here is a blend of all the Sacred Rivers in your life, too .

STUDENT PROGRESS, NON-CONTACT HOUR REQUIREMENTS, MAKE-UP HOURS, ETC.

Student Progress Reports & Grading Policies

Students understanding of the material presented will be assessed through three primary vehicles: written exams (mid-term) and quizzes, book journals, and final teaching practicum . Through the written exams and book reports students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge conveyed during the training . Through the practicum students will be able to demonstrate the ability to teach a yoga class in a safe and sound manner .

1) The Written Exams will be take home exams and cover the following subjects: Teaching Methodology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Yoga Philosophy/Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers . Passing will be 70% correct or higher . The mid-term exam - take-home, open book - will be conducted halfway through the training .

2) A Final Practical Exam will cover the following subject: Teaching Techniques . This will be graded pass/fail . The practical exam will be conducted the final day(s) of the training . Students will be notified in writing by the end of the scheduled training regarding their certification status upon completion of their practical exam .

3) Written Book Journals are required . See above for Book Journals & Required Reading info .

NOTE: Students will be allowed to retake exams one time and re-write book reports one time if they do not pass on the initial attempt, for a total of two attempts per exam or book report.

4) Practice Journal: Students are encouraged but not required to practice asana (in class or at home) for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours at least three days a week, as well as practice meditation or pranayama for at least 10-20 minutes per day at least three days a week . Journal writing to record the above practices and the students’ reflections will document compliance with this requirement . A Practice Summary Form will be handed out during the last month of training and must be turned in by the date due .

5) Karma Yoga Project: An important aspect of yoga is community service, or karma yoga . Each student will create and deliver two one-hour community classes offered either at Devanadi Yoga, Family Wellness, or at a director-approved location of the student’s choice OR complete 10 hours of karma yoga doing an approved project of the student’s choice . Discussion of acceptable projects will occur early in the training .

6) Various Class Projects: There are a variety of Class Projects given out throughout each program . The 235hr projects center around developing class sequences and practice teaching . While these non-contact hour requirements will NOT take up too much time, they are important, and we want students to be aware of them . They are usually very fun, and will help deepen your learning .

12

14

Progress

If progress is not satisfactory at any point during the training, students will be notified immediately to schedule a meeting with the School Director to discuss ways to improve performance and complete past requirements .

Students may continue to attend classes, regardless of their exam performance . However, they will not receive certification unless meeting the requirements stipulated below .

Certification will not occur if:

The student fails to demonstrate safe instruction .

The student fails to demonstrate understanding of the material presented .

The student fails to complete community service .

The student violates the Code of Ethics .

Probation and termination only apply to situations described in below in “Probation, Dismissal and Re-admittance” and “Student Conduct .”

Students must pass all exams and book reports, complete all assignments satisfactorily, and have 75% physical attendance (completing the MP3 listening for any missed time) to receive certification .

Student Conduct

Ethics are taken very seriously at the Devanadi Yoga Teacher Training & Intensive, as they are essential to a personal practice of Yoga . The ethics statement outlines our behavioral expectations . Participants should be familiar with the statement and adhere to it . The ethics statement and ethical behavior will be studied in class .

Students are required to follow all school rules and policies as outlined in the catalog . Students are expected to behave as mature adults . Students that are disruptive may be terminated from the program at the School’s discretion . Disruptive behaviors include, but are not limited to: chronic tardiness, harassing other students, defamatory statements either oral or written about any student or teacher or the school, breach of confidentiality, possession or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol during school sessions, destruction of school property, behavior creating a safety concern, or abusive language . Students will receive one written warning from staff . If disruptive behavior continues, the student will be terminated from the program .

Attendance

Attendance in all sessions is mandatory . If you anticipate missing class sessions, please reconsider your participation in the program .

Attendance will be taken at each class session . Please arrive 15 minutes early to adequately prepare for the class .

Make-Ups

In the event of an absence, the participant must communicate with the course instructor(s) to agree on a plan to learn the missed content and fulfill the required hours . Meetings, conferences, make-up (including make-up exams), reviews, and any other occurrences resulting from absences will be charged $75 per hour unless arrangements are made in advance with the director . To help with easy make-ups, we have implemented recording our training and allowing enrolled students access via DropBox to the MP3s . Lectures may be listened to and noted in the student’s log for make-ups . You must attend at least 75% of the training in person AND listen to the missed date recordings in order to graduate . Other ways to make-up missed contact hours may include attending concurrent 235 or 340 hour programs in material that is similar to the content missed (schedules of

15

each program given out at the beginning of the program) OR register for advanced workshops at the studio that would complete the missed requirement . Students are given a Missed Class Log to jot down other hours attended through our school during the training that may be used in the case of absence . Because of the nature of varietal schedules, it’s not possible at this time to pre-determine exactly what workshop or training topic will be covered where and when . We just ask that students will do their best to attend each required session, and that in return we will do our best to help you meet the hourly requirements that you missed by communicating clearly .

For 235-hour level students, missed material is expected to be made up within 2 years of starting the program, as that is what Yoga Alliance requests .

Tardiness

Punctuality is required . If the scheduled session begins and the participant is not present that is considered tardy and the student will be required to complete make-up hours via listening to the MP3 recordings or coming to concurrent training program .

Leaves of Absence/Switching Programs

Devanadi offers a ONE TIME leave of absence or the ability to move to another scheduled program from the Devanadi Yoga Teacher Training & Intensive, however, we encourage participation and commitment to the program registered for as changes always create a bit of instability not only for students, but also for the group you move out of and on our administration end . We design our programs to offer the most stability for all students in the program . We believe that sticking with the original registered program, despite some of life’s challenges that arise, is generally the best option for finishing the program on time . Learning how to integrate the yoga practices in times of change, is a big part of what a yoga intensive is all about .

Should a participant need to take a Leave of Absence from the training they are registered in and wish to continue their training at a future date, they will need to pick up where they left off with that future class .

If the participant does decide to continue at a later date, and there has been an increase in tuition, the participant is responsible for the difference between the tuition when they originally started the program and the tuition when they continue the program . Students may re-do parts of the training they have already taken at half price .

Students must discuss the possibility of a leave of absence with the program director first and agree upon a plan before choosing this decision . Students must submit a signed Leave of Absence/Switching Programs letter in order for us to process your request .

There is a $100 Leave of Absence/Switching Programs administration fee to put your enrollment on hold .

Probation, Dismissal and Re-admittance

Students who behave inappropriately (see “Student Conduct”) will receive a written warning .

A second incident of conduct policy violation will result in termination from the program . The School Director will determine if a student will be terminated from the program .

Students may apply for re-admission to a future class . Admission is not guaranteed .

Student Complaints

Students having concerns, complaints, or suggestions are encouraged to bring them to the attention of any school staff member . The School Director’s decision on all complaints is final .
