From The Head of STPS

Teachers‘ Day was on the 16th

May 2016. We would like to wish all teachers A Happy Teachers‘ Day.

The theme for this year is ―Guru Pembina Negara Bangsa‖ literally translated as Teachers the Nation and Race

Builders.

President Obama in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 said

―Let‘s also remember that after parents, the biggest impact on a child‘s success comes from the man or woman at

the front of the classroom. In South Korea, teachers are known as ―nation builders.‖ Here in America, it‘s time we

treated the people who educate our children with the same level of respect. We want to reward good teachers and

stop making excuses for bad ones. And over the next ten years, with so many Baby Boomers retiring from our

classrooms, we want to prepare 100,000 new teachers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math‖.

I share the sentiment of President Obama that teachers play an important part in nation building. Teachers should

be awarded the recognition for the roles they play in nation building. The future of a nation depends a lot on the

education of the future generation of the country.

The world has changed and is changing very fast. Revolution in technology has transformed the way we work, live

and get things done. To prepare for the future our students must not only memorize facts but be critical thinkers

and creative innovators. The ground zero for this to take place is in our education system. The schools should be a

place of high expectation and effort. It is the teachers in partnership with parents and members of the school

community to ensure that students are prepared for the future.

7

From The Head of STSS

Dear Parents,

We are approaching the end of the first half of the second term. The past 7 weeks have been a really busy time, both

academically and also in co-curricular activities. It has been a productive and rewarding period. I would like to

provide an overview of selected activities.

On the academic front, the core business of teaching and learning went on smoothly culminating in the meeting of

parents and teachers to discuss progress reports and how to best support students‘ learning in the school and at

home.

An activity I consider of significance would be the extra support classes for Bahasa Malaysia for Form 1 students.

They have the opportunity to learn and progress at a pace that is comfortable to them. Student confidence grew and

the exercise is showing positive results as recorded in the periodic report given to parents.

Then there was Bahasa Malaysia Day. A poetry recitation competition highlighted student skills in writing beautiful

poetry in the national language which they presented before the whole school. There was so much enthusiasm and

poetry can be fun!

There were whole school events. I am thankful to the teachers and students for their hard work and commitment

during Sweets Day. They spared no effort to ensure that the performances and activities for the event were engaging

and a success.

Fund raisers for the term included the sale of Easter chocolate Eggs and sweets for the year-end Graduation Dinner.

Students put their business acumen and organising skills to the test and raised a respectable amount of money!

The final event before mid-term break was Teacher‘s Day celebration organised jointly by Sri Tenby Schools. It was

a day where teachers took centre stage and students showed their appreciation for teacher‘s who helped, inspired

and motivated them on their journey in education. I would like to thank the students and parents and teachers who

so enthusiastically made it a meaningful day.

Mid-term break starts on 30th June and school reopens on 6

th June.

The mid-term examinations for all forms begin on 7th June and end on 15

th June. The students can take the oppor-

tunity to take a breather and then focus on their revision for the examinations.

It remains for me to wish everyone a good and happy school break!

Mid Year Examination

TEACHERS’ DAY 2016 On Teachers‘ Day we celebrate the contributions and sacrifices of all teachers for students on their journey in education. This memorable occasion was held on 19th May, in Sri Tenby Schools, Penang. It was a day all teachers and students of Sri Tenby School will cherish. The event began at 11 a.m. Teachers‘ took the pledge to carry out the duty of educating the youngsters with dedication. After that, all the national school teachers sang the song, ―Kami Guru Malaysia‖. The campus principal and all heads of schools delivered their speeches, commending teachers for their invaluable work to help educate students, the future leaders of tomorrow.

After a photography session, it was time for the performances by each class. The first performance was choral speaking presented by the Form 1 students. It was an entertaining presentation and the audience could not help but laugh at some of the jokes. It was a good start to the many presentations that followed. The remaining performances ranged from singing to dancing, in groups, duets and solos, all of which were entertaining. After the performances, all the teachers were invited to the front of the stage for a cake cutting ceremony which marked the end of the event. Then it was time for class parties! The variety of food available reflected the cultural backgrounds of all the students. The delicious spread ranged from ‗curry‘ to ‗nasi lemak‘ to pizzas. Everyone ate all they could and had a wonderful time as teachers and students from both national schools mingled. Some International School teachers joined in the celebration too. It was indeed a very unforgettable event for teachers and students. The look of joy on the faces of the teachers and the students proved how successful Teachers‘ Day celebration was. The event will be held every year. It will continue to be a gesture of appreciation for teachers from all of us- the students of Sri Tenby Schools! We love you teachers!

From the Head of TISS

Dear Parents,

In the last week we have ran another event for parents to attend in the International Secondary School. The focus

of this event was about the Secondary curriculum and the Checkpoint exams. We had parents in asking about the

structure of the Cambridge curriculum we offer and how this structure and rigorous exams prepare our students for

their next step in education. The academic focus of the Cambridge curriculum links very well with the emphasis on

lifelong learning skills, in particular with the Cambridge Learner Attributes. These are 5 areas which we promote

alongside our academic success that help our students develop as learners together with achieving excellent exam

results.

This week we have checked student exercise books and planners of over 200 students, across all year groups and

have been very happy with class and homework completed. These quality checks are essential to maintain our

high standards. Please continue to encourage your children to write homework down in their planners, organise

work exercise books neatly and preserve the current excellent condition of their classwork books.

During the next half term we will have an information morning about E-safety and how parents can get involved

and help support the safer use of the internet for everyone in our community.

We also look forward to a month of celebration in June with both Year 11 and 13 students having their graduation

events.

Warm regards,

Mr Paul Walton

A LA MODE

This term, the Year 8 students have been working hard on the

topic of Clothes and Fashion. They learned to describe what they

wear (item and colour) according to occasions (at school, in the

winter, at a party…). They studied songs, read fashion articles

and articles about fashion, and were able to give and justify their

opinion about the clothes, explain why they like/dislike the school

uniform and explore the topic of fashion. This unit culminated

with a Fashion Show! All four groups chose a theme and had to

organise a show, walking the cat walk and promoting each

other‘s outfit. It was a really entertaining performance and all

groups displayed great collaborative skills, a very good

command of the language and excellent creativity.

Bravo a tous!

Every year a writing competition is organised in China

to promote creative writing among teenagers. This

year, the 16th edition of this competition, students could

chose to write a 500-character essay on either a

memorable event or a new experience.

More than 250,000 articles from China and 42 other

countries were sent to the organizers in Beijing. Seven

of those articles were written by our very own Tenby

students: Alvin Tan Jing Heng (Year 11), Ang Chun

Hong (Year 10), Issac Chua Yi Jie (Year 9), Carmen

Lim Kai Wen (Year 8), Tang We Yu (Year 8), Pan Shu

Xuan (Year 8) and Lee Yun Xi (Year 8).

We are thrilled to announce that three of these students

were awarded the 3rd

Prize in this competition: Shu

Xuan with her article on her Unforgettable Grandpa,

Isaac with his article on an Unforgettable Memory and

Good news from Languages Department again!

On Saturday 30th of April, one year 8 student (Grace Tan Jia Yi), two year 9 students (Loh Kho Jing, Claranita

Lister) and one year 10 student (Michelle Chong Wan Yi) took part in the 2016 Penang Chinese Poetry

Performance Competition at Penang Chinese Town Hall.

There were more than 20 schools participating and TISS was the only international school which took part in this

competition in Penang. The Chinese Educational Inspector of Penang Mr. Zeng Xiaoping praised our school during

his speech and thanked warmly TISS for their support in this competition and for promoting Chinese at this level.

Michelle Chong Wan Yi participated in the Individual competition: she had only 24 hours to prepare for her

performance and did really well in what is a nerve-racking and high-pressure event. The other three students

competed in the Team performance and were awarded for their rendition second prize in junior high school for

their category (please go to our YouTube page Tenbyschoolspenang to watch their amazing performance).

Congratulations to all for their commitment, hard-work and achievement in this competition.

Many thanks also to parents for supporting our

students when they were preparing and also by

attending this event. We are looking forward to

entering another team next year.

Mr Nick, Ms Carolyn and Ms Hannah would like to announce a new

set of dates for the school production – Rock of Ages. Due to a delay

in receiving the scripts and other materials from New York, USA we

only have 5 school weeks left to rehearse for the original date in July.

give the students the best chance possible to show off their talents

hence our new dates will be Wednesday 19th and Thursday

teachers about how they are progressing in their subject and if the

subject is suitable for them to take. This will help them choose the

best options for September.

Subjects could be added if students would like them to blocks if they

are undecided. All requests of block changes should go to Mr Paul.

Options should be finalised before Friday 10th

June.

Confirmed options will be sent home for parents to check at the end of

At 7:20am on Saturday morning, we gathered at Tenby Schools Penang to depart from Penang to Kuala Lumpur

once again, with a mixture of feelings grumbling in our stomachs. Although we knew we were ready to take on this

journey, we didn‘t know what to expect.

The journey to Kuala Lumpur was pretty intense, listening to the Carmina Burana songs playing and referring to our

scores to remind ourselves not to forget the lyrics. It was a quick ride to KL and it didn‘t take that long to reach to our

hotel. At 12:30pm we were pretty hungry and since the rehearsal was at 2:00pm, we headed to a nearby mall for

lunch. At 1:30pm we were then off to Tenby Setia Eco Park to attend the rehearsal that involved our seating

arrangements. They briefed us with everything we had to do on stage and we felt a sense of anxiety and

nervousness as it became clear to us the magnitude of the performance we had taken on.

After the briefing we carried out the routine rehearsal with the full choir. We then headed for dinner and following that

we returned to the hotel and get a good night‘s rest knowing that tomorrow was going to be a long day.

20

8th

May 2016 (Performance day)

The night passed quickly and Mr Nick insisted we gather at the lobby at

8:30am for breakfast. After breakfast, it was quite a short journey (or at

least we felt so) to KLCC. A few photographs in front of the KLCC tower

later, we found ourselves in the entrance of the Dewan Filharmonik

Petronas! The clock struck 12:30pm and we lined up to register to get

into the concert hall.

After registration, we walked through a carpet covered hallway and

entered a magnificent hall. We were seated in the velvet lined cushion

seats for the audience for about 15 minutes and then moved to our

seating arrangements on stage. It took us by surprise that we were

seating at the organ loft where we could see anything and everything

that was going on below us with the clearest view. After 45 minutes, the

sopranos, altos, tenors, basses and the full orchestra got seated we

were ready to begin the first full performance and feeling very pumped

up to experience it.

We began the first song with power and confidence that echoed through

the wooden hall producing such an astounding sound. It was my first

time watching a real orchestra play before my eyes and it was very

interesting to watch, everyone had a job to do whether it was playing the

piano or the bassoon. Everything looked as if it was from a movie. After

3 hours of the longest rehearsal we‘ve ever experienced we got a 2 hour

rest before the big performance. Approaching 5:45pm and my stomach

felt like there were more than just butterflies in it but I had a gut feeling

that we were going to do just fine. Since we‘ve already put in so much effort in this performance we might as well

make it the greatest one. Once we were seated we could slowly see people flooding in taking every seat, and soon it

was an ocean of people everywhere I glanced. At 6:03pm our conductor Mr Andrew Auster raised his baton in the air

and instructed us to stand to begin the performance with the song ‗O Fortuna.‘

After the 3rd

song, it was the baritone soloist‘s song. It was amazing how one person can sing so loud and clear

without a microphone. Furthermore, during instrumental performances there were dancers dancing along to the

movement of the sound of all the instruments portraying a beautiful visual view of the sound of Carmina Burana. The

soprano soloist surprised everyone with her sweet and high pitched voice that was very soothing to hear. The music

and vocals that was echoing throughout the hall gave us an extra boost of confidence and empowerment. We sang

the finale song and at the last note the lights turned off, the flashing diamond like lights of the disco ball spun around

the room and looked like there were stars all over the ceilings and walls. Surprisingly, I felt like the performance

ended in a blink of an eye although it was 75 minutes long.

After the performance, before leaving the hall probably for the last time, we took a few pictures basically trying to be

as artistic as possible. We quickly left the hall and headed to the after party where it was so crowded with people I

could barely walk past them without being crushed. Instead of staying back for the after party we decided to explore

KLCC since we weren‘t that hungry and it would be our last time in a long time visiting KLCC for most of us. At

10:00pm, the mall was closing so we went back to our hotel for a good night‘s rest after the exhausting but wonderful

day and to prepare us for the next morning‘s

trip back to Penang.
