Roy’s Sidelines

Roy Sharp A Gathering of God's People

We live in a world divided by so many things. Our culture is divided economically. The haves and the have nots are rarely seen together, working together. The haves seem to think the have nots are lazy and do not deserve to be considered when opportunities open up. The have nots see the haves as arrogant, self-focused, and non-caring. We are also divided politically. The present presidential campaign is the most negative, hurtful campaign I have witnessed in my lifetime. It is a very divisive campaign. Another way we are divided in our country is racially. The news headlines have been far too often racially

Page 4: 240 White Avenue Phone: 731-989-5161 FAX: 731-989-9822 ...hendersoncoc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/... · 1 240 White Avenue Phone: 731-989-5161 FAX: 731-989-9822 Henderson, Tennessee

charged with allegations that police officers are motivated to take the lives of black individuals simply because they are black. We see movements such as "Black Lives Matter" begin to call attention to the racial allegations. Sports figures are often called upon and urged to speak up about racism in our country. The concept of racial division is as strong as it has been in this country for the past 50 to 55 years. There is also much religious division in our country, both in the church and out of it. Terrorism throughout the world connected with ISIS has given the impression to some that every Muslim is a terrorist plotting to take the lives of innocent people. The religious division within the church is equally distressing. Surely God is sad to see the world so divided.

Can anything be done about it? God has certainly given us his word to teach us how to be one in Christ. Many passages teach us about the unity that God desires. I Corinthians 12 teaches us that those in His kingdom have been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and even though there are many members, there is but one body. Galatians 3:26-28 teaches us that his children have been baptized into Christ where there are no economic, racial, or religious barriers. We are all "one in Christ Jesus".

The Churches of Christ in Chester County will come together as one body to worship together on September 18th at 5:00 p.m. is a great opportunity to show our love for God and for each other. Please make plans to be a part of this great time to demonstrate unity with the other churches that worship in Chester County. May we make it a very special time to read, pray, sing, and listen to God's word in worship to God together.

Bill Wade Sunday marked the beginning of our Fall quarter. As you hopefully noticed, we have placed signs up in various locations at church with information about our adult Bible classes. Again, let me encourage you to become involved with a Bible class if you aren’t already. You will learn, grow and become closer to other persons in our church family. I would like to say “thank you” in a public way to Randy Mount and Bob Brown. These men come to the church every other Thursday and sometimes every Thursday to distribute attendance cards throughout our pews in the auditorium. They do this for a couple of reasons, I believe: 1. It is a task that needs to be done. 2. It is something they do to honor their friend, John Cole, who took care of this need for years. Last week marked the conclusion of our Summer Series on Wednesday nights. I have heard numerous times from our members of how much they enjoyed and appreciated this particular series. Most all of these lessons are on our church website (www.hendersoncoc.com) and can be listened to on your computer or tablet by clicking on the media tab and sermon archive.

We have a large family here. Everyone is just as important as the next. It is somewhat difficult to stay up to date on everyone’s comings and goings, but we should make an attempt to do so. We have older members who are struggling with their health. We have middle age folks who are transitioning from direct parenting to having their children move out to college. We have young families who are having babies and starting the process towards the other stages mentioned. We also have single members, college students, school age students, widows and widowers. We are blessed, but with that blessing comes a responsibility, too. We have a duty to encourage each other, nurture each other and love each other, among just a few.

Youth Notes

I would like to say “thank you” to all of the Senior Oasis members who provided breakfast for our youth this past Tuesday. It was very thoughtful and greatly appreciated. Thanks to Larry Oldham for your devotional thoughts, specifically stating that our youth are part of the church of TODAY, not just the future. September is a busy month. Here are some events you need to be planning for: RUSH (Reaching Unlimited Spiritual Heights) is September 16-18 at FHU. Cost for RUSH is $20. The youth group is responsible for the nursing home service on September 18th at 2:30PM. Our 5PM service on September 18th will be at Loyd Auditorium on FHU’s campus. The Annual BBQ Festival is September 23 and 24th. The youth group has a devotional scheduled for Sunday, September 25th. Our fall retreat begins on Friday, September 30th and goes through Sunday, October 2nd. Cost for retreat is $30. As usual, we have a prayer breakfast at Jacks every Tuesday morning at 7:00AM. For Bible class this quarter on Sunday morning we will be studying the Epistles of Paul. You’ll want to bring your Bible with you. There is a lot that we can learn from these books.
