Carpenters Union Local 1946 London would like to extend a big welcome to all contestants, representatives and guests to the 28th Annual Provincial Contest. We are proud to host this event which not only displays the best skilled and trained apprentices across the province but our new training facility as well.

We want to thank all those who gave their time to help with the preparation and running of this contest. Without all the helping hands it would be impossible to present a well run event.

On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am pleased to extend warm wishes to everyone attending and participating in the 2014 Annual Apprenticeship Contest of the Carpenters’ Union.

This event showcases the skills and talents of the men and women who have chosen to work in carpentry and its allied trades. Their contributions have contributed much to Ontario’s prosperity and quality of life.

I want to commend the Carpenters’ Union for its commitment to fostering a strong construction sector within a dynamic and prosperous province.

“Brothers, Sisters and Guests,

On behalf of Local 1946, I would like to welcome you to the 28th Annual Apprenticeship Contest. For the last 28 years, members from across the province have come together to take part in the provincial contest to compete in trade contests that include carpentry, drywall and flooring.

Local 1946 is proud to host the 2014 Provincial Contest in our new Training facility. Our new building highlights the commitment and investment the United Brotherhood of Carpenters has made to training and member skill development, both on and off the tools. The building in London is a symbolic statement of the strength and growth of the Carpenters’ Union, both within London and across Ontario. The Provincial Contest is a time for members from across Ontario to come together to celebrate the role the Carpenters’ Union has played in building skylines, industries and communities across our great province.

The strength and longevity of our Union goes back to the Brotherhoods founding in 1881, that included the creation of the Carpenters’ motto ‘Labour Conquers all Things’. As we have proven for more than 133 years and counting, the Brotherhood is a Union that continues to stand strong and produce the highest quality trades people not only in Ontario, but across Canada and beyond.

Congratulations to those who are competing in this Provincial Contest. Please take advantage of this exciting opportunity and don’t forget to enjoy your time here. I look forward to the craftsmanship and skill that will be displayed in the coming days. Best of luck to everyone competing!

Dear Friends,

As Mayor, and on behalf of Londoners, I am very pleased to welcome the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America to our city. Your host, Local 1946, is to be commended for the hours of organization and planning they have put into making this event a success. I am confident you will be very impressed with the new training facility.

Competitors in the 28th Annual Apprenticeship Contest will be showcasing their skills in this excellent facility. Good luck to you all.

Skilled trades are the backbone of our construction industry in the commercial, residential and industrial sectors. This is where talent, experience and perseverance make all the difference and where pride in workmanship is very evident. The competition will be exciting and apprentices will be putting all they have learned on display. This is a friendly, but serious, competition and the winners will move on to the National level.

I trust you will find London to be very welcoming and I hope you have time to see some of the sights. Whether uptown or downtown, our restaurant scene is extensive and I guarantee there is a menu suited to every taste.

London is home to many fine musicians and you can see “live” music at multiple venues. Or, if you need a break from the competition, you may find a walk along the historic Thames River is the best diversion. We have an exceptional reputation for providing pristine green spaces especially set up to please visitors and residents. Parks abound and in June the weather is perfect for soaking up the sun.

2014 Ontario Provincial Apprenticeship Contest – London, Ontario

Congratulations to the organizers and the contestants attending the 28th Annual Ontario Provincial Apprenticeship

Contest. This event showcases the commitment to excellence and training that the United Brotherhood of Carpenters

has in Ontario.

This commitment will be on display as our apprentices demonstrate skills in carpentry, drywall and flooring. These

skills and the pride that our apprentices show represent the future of the United Brotherhood. This Contest also

provides tangible proof of the high level to training that our UBC facilities offer throughout Ontario. The focus that

the UBC has placed on training is second to none in the industry as we prepare for the future by training the next

generation of members to be the safest and most productive Carpenters, Interior Systems Mechanics and Floor- layers

in the business.

These contestants represent 15 UBC Locals from Ontario which have come to London to compete in a spirit of

friendship and pride. I encourage all of the contestants to equally apply your skills to growing your Union. The United

Brotherhood looks forward to working with you as you continue to upgrade your skills and become more involved in

your Local.

I also wish to acknowledge the many educators that have trained these contestants. Your patience and encouraging

words along the way is paying off! Congratulation on a job well done.

Finally, I want to congratulate Local 1946 and the Host Committee on organizing this year’s Contest. The time, effort

and planning has not gone unnoticed and it is because of your hard work on behalf of the United Brotherhood and your

apprentices that this event will be a great success. Thank you.

Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to the 28th Annual Provincial Apprenticeship Contest being hosted this year in London. For all of the members competing this year, congratulations on being selected to represent your Local and trade during the contest. Each year, apprentice members come together from across the province to display their skills and talent and compete to secure a spot at the National Apprenticeship Contest, which is being hosted in Toronto in August of this year.

Training is one of the core areas within the Carpenters’ Union that allows the Union to stand out from the rest of the workforce involved in construction. Without training and schooling, members would not be able to gain and master the skills necessary to meet the high demands and expectations that projects and contractors around the province expect from the Carpenters’ Union. With the changing environment we work in and the role that technology and green building infrastructure continues to increasingly play, no longer can journeypersons ignore training and upgrading when it comes to their individual craft and experience. Without training, journeypersons are falling behind and limiting their opportunity for professional growth and development. To each competitor, thank you for making training a priority during your apprenticeship and realizing the role training plays in making you the most skilled tradesperson you can be.

Over the next 3 days, your skills and abilities will be put to the test. Rest assured though regardless of where you place during the competition, you have already proven to yourselves, your families and your Union, that you are some of the best apprentices that the province of Ontario has to offer. Best of luck to each of you during the contest and enjoy the next few days, as you will remember them for years to come.

CONTEST JUDGESGlenn Morrice – Judge Coordinator

Glenn stared as an apprentice with the Lathers Union in 1965. After 35 years in the trade he became the instructor of Drywall School at Mohawk College. Glenn left there to become the Director of Organizing for the Carpenters District Council, until he retired in 2012.

Steve Laing – Carpenter Judge

Steve has been a training instructor for the Carpenter Apprenticeship Program at Fanshawe College for the past 10 years. He has been a licensed journeyman for 25 years working in all aspects of construction. Also as a successful business owner Steve has operated his own millwork shop and specialized in

high end millwork installations.

Alex Dick – Welding Judge

Alex’s background in welding includes 28 years with the Thames Valley School Board as a Welding Instructor. During this period he also trained Local 700 Ironworkers, Local 1592 Millwrights and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Prior to this, Alex had many years in the welding and

fabricating industry. He is now busy being retired and continues to weld and on occasion teach.

Scott Irwin – Drywall Judge

Scott is in his 33rd year in the Acoustic and Drywall Trade. He started in Toronto at Local 675 in 1981 and moved to London in 1989 where he is currently the Vice President of Local 1946 and a Supervisor for D Thirteen Corporation. Scott is a firm believer that Training is the key to the Future.

John Maudsley – Carpenter Judge

John worked as an apprentice and Journeyman carpenter for seven years with Local 1946. He left the construction industry to pursue a teaching career, as a building construction teacher for 30 years at Clarke Road Secondary School in London. He never forgot his roots and was very influential in assisting

students to pursue a career in the construction industry.

John is very proud to have three sons as carpenters with Local 1946.

Robert Parkington – Carpenter Judge

Bob spent 41 years with McKay Cocker Construction starting in 1966 as an apprentice carpenter working his way to Journeyman, Carpenter Foreman and Gold Seal Certified Supervisor. Bob has been happily retired for 7 years.

CONTEST JUDGESSteve Creces – Drywall Judge

Following in my father’s (Alfonse, Carpenters Union member since 1965) hammer marks, I entered into the Drywall & Acoustic trade through Local 1316’s apprenticeship program at the age of 18.

Internal ambition and good fortune over the 31 years’ within the industry stacked my tool belt

with multiple aspects of my respective trade creating opportunities and a realized dream. Ownership of C.D. Drywall & Acoustics (London) LTD. became a reality 1995.

As always I look forward to the ever changing technology and working with our future trades persons with a prospective outlook and great anticipation.

Darryn Fisher – Floor Coverer Judge

Darryn began his career in the flooring industry in 1990. He has served in both the retail and ICI sectors. Darryn started his own firm Florcan Inc. in 2007 and is a signatory member of the UBC.

Drew Galibrath – Floor Coverer Judge

Drew started at Centura Floor and Wall Fashions in 1977. He began in the warehouse and in 1983 went into sales. In 1989 he went into their commercial division calling on the A & D community. Drew continues to work in this field as well as dealing closely with the commercial flooring contractors in Centura London’s trading area.

CARPENTER CONTESTANTSRyan Honeysett - Local 18 Hamilton

Ryan has been a member of the Carpenters Union since 2010, and has been working with Reimar for 2 years. Ryan has enjoyed gaining experience and knowledge in all aspects of Carpentry. In the future, Ryan would like to continue to develop his skills and share his knowledge as a training instructor.

James Simoni – Local 484 Windsor

James Simoni has been a member of Local 494 since June 2006. James enjoys taking on new challenges and sets his work standards high. His career goal is to become a Foreman. James is a husband and a father to two girls with a third child on the way. He hopes to pass on the knowledge he has gained to

his children. He loves to build and learn and hopes that these passions continue throughout his life.

Andrew Reinhart – Local 2222 Goderich

After high school Andrew decided to pursue a career in the carpentry trade. His decision to join a union was based on the fair wages, safety and training courses offered and the opportunity to work with many talented brothers and sisters. Andrew is currently working at the Bruce Power Nuclear site

and future plans include taking over the family cow/calf operation.

Justin Wright – Local 27 Toronto

Justin started his apprenticeship with Local 27 in 2009 and obtained his red seal in March of this year. He is currently working with Forma-Con.

Justin has been married to Cristen for almost two years and enjoys hunting, fishing and sports.

Tony Cantalini – Local 1256 Sarnia

Joined Local 1256 in 2010 and completed his apprenticeship at Lambton College in Sarnia, ON. Certificate of Qualification Exam passed in 2014. Tony plans on continuing to work in the Sarnia area for Local 1256 on concrete formwork, scaffolding, and any other opportunities that may arise in the Trade.

Ryan Deelstra – Local 1946 London

Ryan has been a member of the Local since July 2010. He currently works for Architectural Millwork and for someone who is always doing woodworking or building this has been a good fit. In his free time Ryan enjoys hunting and fishing. His future ambition is to own his own company, woodwork related of course.

CARPENTER CONTESTANTSCraig Lessard – Local 397 PT Hope

Craig began Carpentry through the OYAP program at his high school and continued his apprenticeship with the Union. He is proud of his work at the Abilities Centre in Whitby doing cabinetry work as well as building a 20,000 square foot custom home. Craig has recently become a Journeyman. He is

married with kids and when he has some spare time he enjoys spending time with family, cars, reading and paintball.

Trevor Andres – Local 785 Cambridge

I have thoroughly enjoyed my career thus far as an apprentice working on many impressive projects in the Local 785 area, although my favourite people to work for is my wife and three boys with the various projects that arise at home. When I’m not working or having fun with my family I enjoy pursuing my hopes

of a professional baseball career by playing in numerous rec leagues.

Landon Broennle – Local 1669 Thunder Bay

Landon Broennle, 22, has been a union member of Local Union 1669 for 3 1/2 years. He enjoys fishing, hunting and playing hockey. Landon recently wrote and passed the Certificate of Qualification Exam in March 2014.

Anthony Torlone – Local 2486 Sudbury

I have always been passionate about the trade which is why I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to join the carpenters union. Being a part of this brotherhood has allowed me to work with some amazing carpenters and apprentices as well as receive the proper training I need to pursue my

goals. I look forward to working alongside more skilled tradesmen in my future and to broaden my ability and knowledge as a carpenter.

Frans Hattingh – Local 93 Ottawa

As a member of the Carpenters’ Union, I have been introduced to a broader scope of work providing me with experience and knowledge in a variety of areas. I enjoy working with my hands, being physical and problem solving. I am able to take advantage of many courses and continued training which

help to keep me current. I look forward to working in the trade for many years to come.

Ian Walsh – Local 249 Kingston

Ian has been a Union member since July 2012. Ian just completed his 3rd term of schooling and is currently in the process of writing his Certificate of Qualification. He enjoys hunting, playing baseball and hockey in his down time.

DRYWALL CONTESTANTSJamie Duncan – Local 18 Hamilton

Jamie has been a member of the carpenters unions since 2009. While an apprentice he worked for companies such as Smith Brothers Contracting and DMD Drywall and Acoustics Ltd. Jamie enjoys the challenges that the trade has to offer. Recently obtaining Journeyman status Jamie is looking forward to

becoming a foreman in the future.

Brad Flynn – Local 249 Kingston

Brad has been a Union member since August 2008. He enjoys working with his hands and seeing a finished product after a hard day’s work. In his spare time, he enjoys teaching his 4 year old son Parker to play hockey. His goal is to excel to the highest level in his trade.

Trevor Warwick – Local 1946 London

Trevor has been a Union member since July 2007. He is a third generation drywall member of Local 1946, Both his grandfather and father are still members. Trevor has worked for J. A. McDonald since joining the Local. When not on the jobsite he enjoys golf, fishing and kayaking. Trevor became a journeyman March 2014.

Jason Robinson – Local 397 Pt Hope

Jason has recently received his Drywall Journeyman ticket and has worked steady for Ducan for the last 5 years. He has had the pleasure of working with a lot of great tradesmen, and that has made going to work every day enjoyable. Jason is married to Jen and they have 3 kids, Jack, Henry, and Lauren. When he isn’t

working he enjoys spending time with his family, hockey and fishing.

Eavan Kennah - Local 785 Cambridge

Eavan joined the Carpenters Union in February 2011 when he was 19 years old. For the past three years he has been developing his skills as a tradesman and is looking forward to becoming a Journeyman. Future goals in the trade are advancing into supervision and passing on knowledge to new

and upcoming apprentices.

Joshua Bezaire – Local 494 Windsor

Joshua Bezaire joined Local 494 in September of 2010. Josh has been employed with Riverview Drywall since his initiation. His career goals are to advance to the point of running jobs as a Foreman. He would like to thank the Journeymen who have taught him everything he knows, with a special thank you to brothers

Chris Vuksan and Charlie Spoiala for teaching him how to be the best tradesman possible.

DRYWALL CONTESTANTSJames Theriault – Local 675 Toronto

James, an active member of Local 675, started his apprenticeship in May 2010 and graduated top of his class for both the Basic and Advanced levels of in-school training. James has also just obtained his C of Q for the Drywall Acoustic Mechanic and Lather trade this past March and is as proud as we are. We wish

James much success in the Provincial Contest

Shane Crochemore – Local 2041 Ottawa

I have been a part of Local 2041 since August 2008 and I am enjoying the Trade of Interior Systems.

I am presently applying for my Certificate of Qualification and I am looking forward to working for many years in this Trade. This competition is a very good

challenge for me and I would like to take the opportunity to wish good luck to everyone.

Trevor Levola – Local 2486 Sudbury

Trevor Levola joined the union in 2006 and began working for Prosperi. He has lived in Sudbury all his life. Studied law and security at Cambrian College but decided to work in the trades. Worked as a mason tender for several years but decided to take on carpentry. . Trevor is 39 yrs old, married 14 yrs with 2 kids

Brady and Jorja. He enjoys camping and traveling.

FLOOR COVERER CONTESTANTSAlain Pilon – Local 93 Ottawa

I was born in Northern Quebec and moved to Ottawa in 2007. I started working with Gem Campbell who saw my potential and suggested I go to school in the hopes that I could help open a soft flooring division down the road. I became a member of the Carpenters’ Union and have been employed by the same company

ever since. It is my goal to soon become a Journeyman Floorlayer and continue on this path for a very long time.

Josh Knight – Local 1946 London

Josh has been part of Local 1946 since June 2009. Similar to other members of the Carpenters’ Union, Josh is a 2nd generation floor layer, and has been taught by the best instructor he has ever worked with, his dad. 2014 has been a busy year for Josh, he will be getting married this July to his fiancée and hopes to complete

his apprenticeship by the end of the year. In his off hours, Josh plays hockey, poker and enjoys spinning vinyl in his spare time.

Daniel Moxom – Local 27 Toronto

Daniel started his apprenticeship in 2009 and became a Journeyman in January of this year. He recently married his high school sweetheart, Eleni. In his spare time Daniel enjoys soccer whether it be playing or watching. He’s looking forward to the World Cup this summer!

Larry Winegarden – Local 1946 London

Larry joined Local 1946 since March 2009 as an apprentice with BCN Flooring. Currently, Larry is completing the in-class portion of his apprenticeship along with his son, who is also a floor coverer and a member of Local 1946. In his free time, Larry enjoys playing the guitar likes classics but has preference

for blues. Larry is married with 4 children.

Ryan Bagsiyao – Local 27 Toronto

Ryan has been a floorlayer and member of Local 27 since 2011. He is currently working for Centa Construction Limited. Ryan has been married to Marites for 10 years and they have 2 children, Raven and Zyla. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball and badminton.

CONTEST ELIGIBILITY AND RULESEligibility

Contestants must:

1) Be in their last year of apprenticeship or have completed their apprenticeship and received their journeyperson certificate in the period from the date of the previous Provincial Apprenticeship Contest (June 12, 2013) to the present Contest;

2) Have been a member of the United Brotherhood for at least one (1) year prior to the month of the Contest;

3) Confirm their apprenticeship or journeyperson status and verify their sponsoring Local Union with an authorized signature on the registration form;

4) Be in good standing with their Local Union;

5) Not have competed in a previous Provincial Apprenticeship Contest;

6) Not be on Workers’ Compensation or any disability insurance claim at the time of the contest.

Contest: Rules

1. The Carpentry Contest shall have four (4) components:

Theory Exam; Transit (DWT10) / Level (SOKKIA C320) Layout; Welding (stick – Miller XMT350) and Practical Project.

2. The Acoustic & Drywall Contest shall have two components:

Theory Exam and Practical Project.

3. The Floor Covering Contest shall have two components:

Theory Exam and Practical Project.

4. The Contest committee shall be in charge of the Contest.

5. The decision of the independent judges shall be final.

6. Contestants shall not talk to anyone other than the judges, identified facilitators, or Contest Committee members, nor shall they leave their assigned work area without the permission and accompaniment of one of the above-mentioned people.

7. Contestants must adhere to all health and safety regulations including:

• Wearing required personal protective equipment at all times while on the shop floor (i.e., hard hats, grade 1 safety shoes (green patch), safety glasses; (and knee pads if applicable)

• Wearing appropriate work apparel i.e., long

pants and shirt with sleeves. (Shorts, cut offs, tank tops, and garments with monograms, insignias, or lettering are not acceptable)

• Ensuring work appropriate grooming (e.g., long hair must be tied back)

8. During refreshment and lunch breaks, the contestants shall only talk to the Committee members, identified facilitators, and judges and shall not leave the Contest area until the Contest is completed.

9. The contestants shall furnish all hand tools required for the Contest as per the hand tool list supplied by the Contest Committee. Tools shall be in an appropriate toolbox.

10. No contestant sharing of hand tools permitted.

11. Contestants shall bring their own tools in an appropriate toolbox or tool bag. Tool boxes or tool bags can be in any reasonable shape as long as the volume of it does not exceed the following cubic measurements: 4,608 cubic inches or 75,525 cubic centimeters (i.e. 12” X 12” X 32” or 305mm X 305mm X 813mm). In no case will contestants be allowed to carry their own tools in a bucket.

12. All other required tools shall be supplied by the Contest Committee.

13. Contestants may not use power tools, hand tools or accessories that have neither been supplied by the Contest Committee nor identified on the tool list.

14. Books, formulas, tables, charts, etc., or any device (i.e. Construction Master) that gives predetermined answers, examples of problems or layout procedures are prohibited; however, hand held, battery operated calculators will be permitted and supplied by the Contest Committee.
