From the Principal… I can’t believe that we are almost at the end of the term! As you are aware, next week we will be holding our

ANZAC Dawn Service. You should have all received a letter from me advising you of the details for this big event.

The Service will be held on Friday 12 April commencing at 6:00am, students are expected to be here at 5:30 am.

Please know that students will know what to do as we would have gone through a whole school rehearsal the

previous day. For our new families our day begins very early with our

Dawn Service starting at 6:00am. This is a beautifully moving service which is organised

by the school and run by our senior students and attended by over 1200 people. The

Dawn Service is followed by a breakfast for the whole school and the running of the

Poynter Gift at about 8:00am. Please be aware that we shift our instructional day to

commence at 5:30am, this means that school will close at 12:00pm on Friday 12 April.

You will find all this information in the letter sent to you last week, via Connect, the

School App and a link on our school website.

NAPLAN will be held in weeks three and four of next term, starting on the 14 May, 2019. Parents with children in Years 3 and 5

should have already received notification about the dates. May I please remind you that it is a requirement for us to schedule the

tests in a sequential order so if your children are away, we will need to administer the tests in that same order on their return.

I will be holding a parent information session of our very successful program You Can Do It! Program on Tuesday 21 May from

5:30-7:00pm next term. The facilitator who re-trained the staff last year will be presenting the session. Please come along as it will

help you to understand what we do, why we do it and how we do it. It will also help you with some strategies at home so that you can

re-inforce our program.

Congratulations to all my staff who contributed

with goods and service towards the last

Poynter Farmers’ Market. We raised $1090.40

on the day, Well done to everyone! If it is your

turn next, the slushies were an absolute

success so don’t forget to make them.

Another congratulations goes to Miss Eden for

organising the Free Coffee Friday last week

with 98.5 Sonshine FM! I know that everyone

that came along enjoyed the broadcast and

the gathering first thing in the morning.

My last congratulations go to Mrs Liebe, Mrs Nicholson and Mrs Wray on the organisation for Harmony Day, in particular for the

drummers and the beautiful mural in the undercover area. The mural is a representation of our diversity here at Poynter PS. The

drummers engaged all our students from Kindy to Year 6, with their exceptional ability at drumming and student participation.

From the Principal cont…

School Board

At our School Board meeting next week we will be discussing a new Good Standing Policy which is going to be introduced as of Term

2. This is a State Government requirement and is linked to the Minister’s ‘Let’s take a Stand Together’ document, which was put out at

the end of 2018. You will find a copy of the new policy in our website.

Operational Matters

Budget 2019

Our school budget came in on the 27 March and this year is looking very tight. This is because we put the majority of our budget into

staffing to implement programs which support and extend our students, part of this funding is Voluntary Contributions. I understand that

these are voluntary; however, the funds help us in funding the programs that we implement, so please if you are able to contribute this

amount directly to the school, it is only $60. You are welcome to make any arrangements with our MCS, Gail Taylor. At this moment

we still have $7380 outstanding .

Parking on the Footpaths and school Car Parks

Please be aware that staff car parks are for staff only. If you pick up your child from the Kiss & Drive please don’t rush to be here by

3:00 pm as children generally come out 5 minutes late. Admin supervises this area and we are out there until 3:20pm so there is plenty

of time. Also a gentle reminder that the City of Joondalup has regulations about parking on footpaths, please be aware of the following:

Supervision of Students After School

We are very lucky to have grounds with beautiful trees, lawns and well equipped play areas. They are unique and a source of pride for

our students, staff and wider community. Given the quality of our grounds it is not surprising that so many families take the opportunity

to socialise well after the students are dismissed for the day. May I please remind all parents that all school rules apply while students

are on school grounds before and after school. Students are aware of this as we have spoken to them during our small assemblies on

several occasions. Students may only be on playground equipment after school if they are being closely supervised by their

parent. They are also expected to use the equipment correctly. Please help us in re-enforcing this request as our concern is for the

safety of our students. Students are also not to ride scooters and bikes on school grounds or enter classrooms after school. Although

students are dismissed at 3:00 pm many of our staff stay on school grounds working until at least 5:00pm.

Thank you for your support throughout Term1. I hope you all have a wonderful break.

Have a restful weekend and see you at the market.

Dear Parents,

The ANZAC Assembly is scheduled for the last day of term on Friday 12th April. Please see below for some information for the instrumental and choir students.

ANZAC ASSEMBLY: Students Involved: The performing Groups who will be participating in the presentation of the ANZAC Assembly on Friday 12th April (last Friday of Term 1) are:

Poynter PS Orchestra – Year 5/6 Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello), Year 6 Wind (Trombones, Trumpets, Clarinets, Flutes) and Year 6 Percussion

Year 5/6 Choir Year 6 Chamber String Group

All students are working hard on the instrumental and choral works selected for this year.

Performance Uniform: Students in the choir and orchestra must wear the performance uniform which consists of: White long-sleeved, collared button up shirt Black pants (NO leggings or jeans) Black enclosed shoes and black socks (NO sneakers) Performance vest – distributed from school. If you have not ordered or secured your performance uniform, you must be in contact with Mrs Bester. An email was sent out two weeks ago regarding how to purchase/hire the performance uniform.

Scheduled Arrival Times for Instrumental and Choir Students: The details here are specifically for students who are performing.

4.45am arrival for Year 6 instrumentalists for tuning and vest distribution. 5.00am arrival for Year 5 instrumentalists for tuning and vest distribution. 5.15am arrival for the remaining Year 5/6 Choir members for vest distribution.

We are looking forward to participating in the ANZAC Dawn Assembly as it is one of the highlights of the school calendar. Timetable Changes: There are some schedule changes to rehearsals. Please take note of them. Monday 0800-0845: String Septet Tuesday 0745-0845: Orchestra Wednesday 0745-0845: Orchestra Year 5 Training Band: The Year 5 beginner Training Band will commence in Term 2 with our first rehearsal in the very first week of term. Rehearsals will continue for the rest of the year on Mondays 07.45am – 08.45am in the Music Room. The students involved are: Year 5 trumpets and trombones Year 5 flutes Year 5 clarinets Year 5 percussion students They will be required to bring their instruments and will be given a band book which will need to booked out in their name from the library which they can then keep for the remainder of the year and returned at the end of Term 4. Participating in an ensemble gives meaning and relevance to the purpose of learning a musical instrument. Furthermore, research indicates, that students progress much faster on their instruments when they are involved in music making with others. They learn not just musical skills, but also skills in sequencing, team work, collaboration and co-operation, as well as developing their interpersonal and organizational skills. As participants in the IMSS Instrumental programme, they are required to participate in ensembles that are made available to them through the school. The Training Band will perform as an ensemble at the Third Term Music Assembly and then again in Term 4 at the Ensemble Soiree. I am looking forward to working with the beginner instrumental students.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT Hi Everyone,

What a fun time we had at Free Coffee Friday last week with Sonshine FM 98.5! It was a wonderful morning (albeit a bit cold), and it

looked like kids and adults alike were enjoying themselves. I have had positive feedback about the event and it was great to see so many

of you there.

A big THANK YOU to Sonshine FM 98.5 and their team, to Mrs Jeffers, all staff and parents for your

support – it would not have been the success it was if it was not for the amazing, supportive community we

have here at Poynter PS.

We are on the home stretch for Term 1 – I know for many of you this has been a big term. I trust that you

will have a fantastic school holiday break and enjoy precious moments with family

and friends.

See you in Term 2

Miss Eden

P&C NEWS 80’s Trivia Night

The Poynter community sure knows how to do a dress-up theme! The 80’s Trivia night was a

great success and raised approx. $4,000 for the school. You can all pack away the crimpers,

mullets and loud clothing for another year. Well done on some AMAZING dress ups! I think it

is safe to say that all those who attended had a trip down memory lane with great music, fun

80’s facts and some groovy dance moves.

These events don’t happen without the help of some amazing volunteers.

We would like to give a special thanks the Gasmier family, Penny family, O’Reilly family,

Birnie Family and Pearson Family for all their help with setting up and packing up.

A big thank-you to the Administration staff in the office and to Mr Joyce for helping with

logistics.

Our chief scorers Anita Cunningham and Nicky Garrett - Thank you!

Manning the bar and raffles - Melaine Morrow, Sunita Patel, Ali Coton and Nat Gasmier – Thank you!

There were many others who assisted along the way with collecting donations, making hampers and decorating the under covered area

to transform it into a fabulous venue for our event - thank you all, many hands certainly do make light work.

We were fortunate to have such a great response to a call out for donations and have kept some prizes for later events. Businesses and groups that supported us include;

Landscaping WA Succulent bowl (value $300) The Wild Fig Scarborough - 4 x $25 vouchers City Beach Travel Accessory hamper $200 voucher Voyage Café $60 dinner voucher Redhage Basketball Place in holiday camp (value $175) City Summit Rock Climbing 2 x family passes (value $120) The Girl from Ipanema $70 voucher Masterfoods Spice multi pack (value $30) Our Poynter Families Donations Priceless

Please show your support to these businesses as thanks for supporting our school.

PERFORMANCE & SECOND-HAND UNIFORM SALE

Thank you to Julene Bester for co-ordinating and managing the sale of Performance Uniforms this term. It has been a big job to collate

and re-sell the returned uniforms and ensure that all students are ready for the ANZAC Day Service next week. Also we need to

acknowledge the efforts of Leanne Masterson at the end of 2018 for co-ordinating the collection of the uniforms – Thank you. As

mentioned in previous newsletters the buy back system is currently being phased out.

We also went through the lost property and second-hand uniforms and have cleared a lot of this out to make the P&C room much tidier.

We are currently looking into where and to whom we can donate the leftover items. Special thanks to Pam Birnie, Gabriela Lawrence,

Deb Whitehouse and Helen Cawley for assisting to organise and sell the stock.

The combined total of the sales exceeded $600. Thank you.

ANZAC DAY SERVICE

We are set to finish this term with our ANZAC Service. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to bake and help out on the day.

This service has become an iconic day on our calendar. Whilst the early morning rise might be hard work at first - the morning provides

an insight for children on our history and provides a moment of reflection for everyone in attendance. If you can volunteer at all, please

let your class coordinator know or email [email protected] . It’s never too late to bake or volunteer.

TERM 2

In TERM 2 the 2019 | 2020 Entertainment Books will go home. You should have already received a note with early bird offers. This is a

great way to save on entertainment and support the school at the same time. Finally – we are still looking for a Market Buyer & Safety

House Rep. If you are interested please let us know.

We wish you a happy a safe Easter break!

HARMONY DAY March 21 is Harmony Day and iit s also the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is an important day

because it gives Australians an opportunity to celebrate our successes as a culturally diverse society. Orange is the official

Harmony Day colour and our students came dressed in orange to celebrate Harmony and this year's message of 'Everyone

Belongs'.

Students surveyed the origins of all students, parents and staff at Poynter PS and the year 5/6s in Room 11 analysed the data. The

results are displayed on a mural in the Undercover Area, celebrating the diversity of our school community.

African Oz Drum and Dance came to share with Poynter PS their culture and music, engaging the school in a drumming

spectacular. Everyone had an amazing time, taking turns in singing and drumming along on one of the 100 African drums provided

in the ECE and Undercover Area.

To celebrate their own origins, students created miniature versions of themselves wearing the flag of the country they were born.

The mini-students are displayed holding hands along the walls of the Undercover Area and in the ECE.
