We need to achieve a point where we have

sustainable cities, this can be achieved through

sustainable development=

Sustainable - Being able to meet the needs of thepresent population of a place, without compromisingthe ability of future generations to be able to do the

same.

So a sustainable city is one that suits its presentpopulation, and can be kept so that it suits future

dwellers of the city too.

The Egan Wheel

In 2004 Sir John Egan was asked by the DeputyPrime Minister to examine how communitiescould be more sustainable.

Egan suggests that sustainable communities

must meet the diverse needs of existing andfuture residents, their children and other usersby offering choice. In order to be sustainable,communities must: Make effective use of natural resources Enhance the environment Promote social cohesion and inclusion and Strengthen economic prosperity.

He introduced what is referred to as the Egan

Wheel, which can be used as a tool for judgingsustainable communities.
