Arizona remains in the harbor as a remembrance of the 1,177 crew members lost in service to their country. At least 30 ships have been named after cities, places, people, and American Indian tribes of Arizona. Christian Pike of Peoria, AZ. died in 2013 from combat-related injuries while conducting stability operations in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor. A Navy Operational Support Center, or NOSC, is a facility used to provide operational support for training and administrative services to Navy Reserve Units. There are two NOSCs in Arizona: NOSC Tucson, located at Davis- Monthan Air Force Base, and NOSC Phoenix, located at Luke Air Force Base. PEOPLE PLACES Christian M. Pike Chief Cryptologic Technician (EXW/IDW/SW) John S. McCain Arizona Senator Senator McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958 and served in the Navy until 1981. He was a prisoner of war during Vietnam from 1967-1973. Gabrielle Giffords Former U.S. Representative USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) was named for the Tucson native and U.S.representative from Arizona who survived a 2011 assassination attempt.
