The Course Background to the New Testament

church for those who were unable to attend during

the evening.

Vision 2020—Faith Formation –Biblical Studies Series Background to the New Testament

Tuesday Evenings: 7 pm-8:30 pm beginning on Tuesday 22nd July, 2014 in the Presbytery

Bible Studies will resume after the school holidays and a brief winter break. The new series will begin with the

Infancy narratives and then examine the Gospel of Matthew.

This unit considers the social context in which this Gospel was produced and looks at the ways in which it reflects

the history of the early Church as it outgrew being a reforming sect of Judaism. It examines the struggles caused

by being excluded by Jewish leaders from community life because of moral decisions made between 40-70 C.E.

The course will include:

1. The Infancy Narratives

2. Background to the Gospel: Author; Date; Place; Purpose

3. Proclaiming the Kingdom 3-7:29

4. Preaching the Kingdom 8-11:1

5. The Mystery of the Reign of God 11:2 – 13:53

6. Forming the Church 13:54 -18:35

7. Establishing God’s Reign 19 – 25:46

8. The Death and Resurrection of Jesus 26 – 28:20

9. Jewish/Christian Relations – any other issues The course will be taught by Mary Kelty who holds a master’s degree in Religious Education from Fordham, the Jesuit Uni-

versity in New York and has had over 30 years of teaching experience and curriculum writing for secondary schools, includ-

ing courses in Texts and Traditions and its Queensland counterpart Study of Religion where she was on the State Panel for

many years.

HOLY EQUAL-TO-THE-APOSTLES GREAT PRINCE VOLODYMYR (IN HOLY BAPTISM BASIL), ENLIGHTENER OF THE RUS'

Though his grandmother, Queen Olha, had been a Christian, his father Svyatoslav reverted to paganism, and Prince Volodymyr spent the early part of his life believing and living the beliefs of the pagan Rus' people. But he sought for something more, and sent emissaries to study the faiths of the Jews, the Mus-lims, the Western Christians and the Easter Christians. After attending services in Agia Sophia in Con-stantinople, they told him 'We knew not if we were on earth or in heaven' and Prince Volodymyr deter-mined to embrace the Christian faith. He was baptised in Kherson in 988, receiving the name Basil. "He came forth from the font not only healed of a blindness lately afflicting him, but also from being passion-ate and warlike, he became meek, peaceable, and exceedingly godly." (Great Horologion). He married Princess Anna, sister of the Emperor, and returned home with a retinue of priests from Constantinople. He immediately set about building a Christian nation: casting down the idols, baptizing the people, and establishing a Christian government. His legislation for his recently barbarian nation was modeled on the Gospel, and in its conformity to Christ's commandments exceeded even the other Christian nations of the time. He reposed in peace in 1015, leaving behind a kingdom that grew to be the largest Christians nation in the world.

Зі святими упокій

Ділимося з вами сумною вісткою, що у неділю 20-го липня, на 88 році земного життя, упокоїлася

в Господі св. п. Ольга Кудільчак, народжена 10-го листопада 1925 року в с. Зерниця. Покійна залиши-

ла у смутку чоловіка Стефана, сина Стефана та доньку Марію, невістку Марію та зятя Михайла, чоти-

рьох внуків та 4 правнуків. Похорон покійної відбувся в п’ятницю, 25-го липня 2014 року в храмі Ус-

пення Пресвятої Богодиці, Ардір. Родині та знайомим покійної складаємо щирі співчуття, та просимо

молитися, щоб Господь Бог оселив душу її де праведні спочивають.

Eternal memory

We share with you the sad tidings that on Sunday 20th July, Olga Kudilczak passed to God in her 88

year. She was born on the 10th November 1925 in Zernecha. She leaves in sorrow husband Stefan, son Stefan

and daughter Mary, daughter-in-law Mary and son-in-law Michael, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Her funeral took place at church of Dormition of the Mother of God (Ardeer) on Friday, July 25th, 2014. We

express our sincere condolences to family and friends of deceased servant of God and ask everyone to pray that

God Lord will place her soul where all the just repose.

From 16 of September until 1 October, Australia will host His Beatitude Patriarch Sviato-slav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. During his two week visit Patriarch Sviatoslav will visit Ukrainian parishes throughout Australia, speak with the Catholic bishops, meet with politicians, and also meet Ukrainians throughout Australia. This is Patriarch Svi-

atoslav’s first pilgrimage to Australia.

His Beatitude will be in Melbourne from Friday September 19th till Tuesday, September 23rd. More details of his visit to Victoria will be provid-ed later.

Катехизм «Христос — наша Пасха» говорить: § 542-543 Молитовне значення Вечірні полягає в прославленні Господа, проханні про дари і каятті за провини. Ці три основні її елементи переплітаються між собою. У Псалмі 104 (103) прославляємо Господа за Його творіння, а на «Господи, візвав я до Тебе» (Пс 141 (140); 142 (141); 130 (129); 117 (116)) висловлюємо каяття і просимо прощення. Важливими елементами Вечірні є кадіння та світло. Дим кадила, що піднімається вгору, висловлює нашу покаянну мо-литву, яка восходить до Господа, а в гимні «Світло тихе» оспівуємо Христа, який неміччю Сво-го хреста здолав силу диявола і «життя дарував усьому світу». У гимні «Сподоби, Господи» просимо про охорону від гріха «у вечір цей» світлом Божих настанов. Завершується Вечірня піснею Симеона Богоприємця: «Нині відпускаєш раба Твого, Влади-ко» (див. Лк. 2, 29-32), у якій уся спільнота разом із праведним Симеоном висловлює радість зустрічі з Господом цього вечора, а також готовність до зустрічі з Ним у славі, коли побачимо Його «обличчям в обличчя» (пор. 1 Кр. 13, 12), коли остаточно узріємо спасіння Боже, «приготоване перед лицем усіх людей».

To enrich our prayer life we are going to have Great Vespers at our Cathedral every first Saturday of month at 5 pm.

Here is a very short explanation of this Service (source: http://www.saintelias.com). Vespers will be in English. We welcome everyone to pray together.

Great Vespers is the Saturday evening Church Service. It begins the cycle of Sunday Services (Vespers, Matins, and Divine Litur-gy).

Following good Jewish Tradition, the Eastern Churches see the day as beginning on the evening before, cf. Genesis 1:5b,

"Evening and Morning, the first day".

The core of the Service is the praying the Evening Psalms and the Lighting of the Lamps.

In the Bible, people prayed in the Evening (as well as at morning and midday). Pious Jews still pray at morning, midday and evening.

Lamp lighting originally served the practical purpose of having light when the sun set. Everyone in Bible times did it.

The Church deconstructed the household chore to be understood theologically as symbolic of:

Jesus the Messiah - the Light of the World.

According to Fr. Alexander Schmemann, there are 4 themes to Great Vespers:

1. Creation — 2. the Fall — 3. Salvation — 4. Parousia

A Brief outline of Great Vespers

2. The Fall. Lamp Lighting Psalms Stikhera of the Psalms (Hymns which ex-plain the Psalms)

3. Salvation (Liturgy of the Word). Entrance Procession Hymn of Light Prokimen (Psalm introducing the Bible Readings) Old Testament Readings (on major Feastdays) Insistant Litany Prayer by Reader (“Favour us O Lord” ) Litany of Supplication Prayer of Inclination Apostikha (Final hymns which explain the Psalm for the Feast)

4. Parousia. The Song of St. Simeon Trisagion Prayers Resurrectional Tropar (Theme Hymn of the Sun-day) The Dismissal
