35th Annual Convention

It’s that time of the year again. We are calling for all hands on deck to help plan this milestone event in the life of our Association. The site location for the next two years is the Sheraton Four Points , 530 Richards Drive in Manhattan, KS. KAT will have our planning meeting for this convention at the event hotel on Sunday, January 15th at 10 AM. We will have a member of the hotel staff with us to as-sist with planning and giving us a tour of the grounds. Please make plans to be at this meeting as this is looking to be another good Convention. This will be the meeting that we put our schedule together, discuss seminar op-tions and the many other opportunities that will help make this yet another quality KAT experience.

Congratulations to KAT Sec-retary Brian Sigman on his recent promotion from Ser-geant to Lieutenant with the Wichita, Kansas Police De-partment. Brian is also the owner and taxidermist at Sig’s Taxidermy, also in Wichita and has served as the KAT Treasurer since 2012. Brian is shown here with the McKenzie Distin-guished Service Award he received in 2013.

As I write this it is cold….very cold out-side. The Christmas spirit is in the air and new resolutions are being tossed around in the minds of many. I must admit that I have a few too, most of which I know won’t come into fruition. How about this one….”I am not going to be finishing my mounts the

week before the competition”. In a sense that is ok but I should have said I will have them completed before the week of the com-petition. Another one might be, “I am going to fish much more this year” or “we are going to spend more time at the lake this summer”. Those are good thoughts but The way it’s going now, I may not be able to get out of the shop any more this year than I did last. While resolutions may work for some, I do better with goals, one of which is to have as good of a convention or even better than we did last year. That will begin when we meet on Sunday, January 15th, for our planning meeting. I’d like to invite every member that can be there on this day. There are many things to discuss and all ideas are welcome and helpful. We will meet at the site loca-tion which is the Sheraton Four Points, 530 Richards Road in Manhattan, KS at 10 am. Every year at the convention, the KAT awards a scholarship in the amount of $750 to a member of our organization. This allows the recipient to negotiate a learning experience with any taxidermist they want to learn from. All you have to do is to send your name to me before the early registration deadline and it will go into the drawing that will take place at the awards banquet. This year at the annual meeting we will have three board seats and all officers up for election. For those of you who are interested in a leadership role, this is your opportunity get involved. There are other ways to help too and if you are interested, we will find you a place to help so please get in touch with me or any other board member if you ae interested. I would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas, Happy Holi-day season and a Happy New Year. Be safe and I will look for-ward to seeing you at the meeting in January. Tviper56….out!

Tim’s Talk By Tim Stidham

A note from the Penn….

Convention will be here before you know it! Ever think about trying for the KAT scholarship? Now is the time to think about what you would want to learn more about and/or who could teach what what you’re interested in. We have some great teachers in the association, but it doesn’t have to be local study. Entries must be mailed to the KAT President before

convention in March 2017. More info will be in future newsletters or call President Tim @ 816-536-1974

Clint’s Corner

Tis the season for being a busy taxi-dermist! If you are like me, this time of year you are busier than a one-eyed cat watching two mouse holes. Archery deer season was

pretty slow in my area mainly due to the heat but rifle season is in full swing and the deer are dropping like flies. Time is flying by and January is almost here. Once we swing into the new year, it always seems like the show dates come really fast then. I have not started on my show pieces yet, but it is time to start thinking about them hard and possibly getting started on them. My message for this news letter is more of a small tutorial. I can't remember if I have ever shared this or not, so if I have, you can just skip onto the next sec-tion of the newsletter or if you already know about this method than you can ignore this, but it might be useful for someone. For years I have just used rolled clay on a wire to make tails for my small mammals such as bobcats and coyotes. This works but it is not the greatest, easiest, fastest, or the most anatomical way. Now I make my tails out of hot glue and they are an exact fit and they are flexible. Here's how: Step 1: Cut the tail off of an average sized critter of the species you are wanting to make the tail of. For this example we will use a bobcat. If you use an average sized animal, you can use the mold for just about any bobcat. Step 2: Lay out a piece of plastic and spread us-ing a caulk gun about 1/4” thick bed of silicone on the plastic wider and longer than the bobcat tail. I use the cheapest Walmart silicone I can get. Step 3: Place the tail onto the silicone and keep it straight as possible and slightly press into the silicone. Step 4: Cover the rest of the tail with silicone so that the tail is completely concealed and air tight and set aside to dry for a day or two. The tail wont rot very much since it is not exposed to the air. Step 5: Once the silicone is dry, cut it from the base down toward the tip and remove the tail. Step 6: Now to make a flexible correct tail with actual vertebrae “bumps”. Cut a long piece of wire, for a cat I use 12 or 14 gauge, longer than the mold by about 4-5 inches so that you have some wire to place into the form when done. Step 7: Open up the silicone mold and place the straight wire into the mold the entire length. Then with a hot glue gun, start at the tip and slowly fill up the tail mold with hot glue working your way toward the base of the mold. If glue leaks out where the mold has been cut, don't worry, you can cut off when it is dry. The beauty of this is that the only thing that will stick to silicone is more silicone, so no release agent is needed.

Step 8: Once glue has dried, just pull out the tail and trim off the glue flanges from the edges and you have a perfect tail that will fit and you can bend it in any direction you want. I make labels out of paper and place on the mold and cover with more silicone so I don't have to remember what tail it is I am looking for and I make them for just about every small mammal that I mount so I always have a tail that I can use. These molds if made thick enough can be used hundreds of times. Clint Bowman

Bird Judge Kent Reedy: I began working with Taxidermy in 1976 at the age of 16, resulting from my love of the out-doors. I am a self-taught Taxidermist specializing in Bird Species. After 9 years of mounting and studying the various bird spe-cies I entered my first competition. That was 1985 at the Iowa Taxidermy show. The final results of the show were special as I received awards for first place Bird Category and also received Best of Show. Just after the 1985 competition I began making artificial parts for the birds I mounted because I felt that it allowed an easier way of reproducing anatomy and structural re-sults. The parts were artificial heads and feet that I still use in my bird work today. In 1987 I entered the Iowa taxidermy show and received a first place award along with best of show. In the same year the World Taxidermy Show was held in Georgia and I was awarded best in world birds along with Best of show. In 1989 I won best bird International Guild of Taxidermy, 1990 best bird National champion. In 1995 won first place in the Master of Masters at the World Taxidermy show. The next competition entered was not until the 2005 Iowa show. Since that show I have received two more Best of show in 2005 and 2008, and two in carving. At the 2011 world show we received 3rd place for The Carl Akley Artistic Award for most artistic presentation which was chosen from 500 mounted pieces. National titles in 2010. The World Taxidermy convention in 2013 was to prove a hum-bling event, having been presented the following awards for a sculpture incorporating a wood duck in a reflection concept: First place Carl Akley Artistic Presentation, Competitors Choice Best of Show Award, and Best in World Collective Artist. Currently displays of work focus on incorporating art through various sculpting concepts. Having had success in competitions, you are often asked to judge shows. I have had the honor of judging the World Taxidermy Show, the European Taxidermy Show, the National Taxidermy Show, International Guild, and many state shows during my 40 years in Taxidermy. Most of my time now is focused on teaching bird taxidermy to students from beginner to master levels along with developing reproduction parts.

Fish and Amateur Judge Mike Orthober: Mike Orthober and his wife Lorie have two grown children plus three grand children and live in Egg Harbor Wisconsin. He has been doing taxidermy for 40+ years and has been working at his present location since 1983. He does all facets of taxidermy in his business. He started competing in 1982 and over the years has won many state, national and world titles which in-clude best in world fish , best in world warm water fish, second in world nongame bird, two master of masters at world, one best of show NTA and taxidermist of the year NTA. He enjoys hunting and fishing, clay target shooting, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Whitetail Deer Judge Brian Olson: Brian has been a taxidermist for 33 years and enjoys working on mammals, game heads, whitetails, and base work/habitats in this shop in WI. He is considered an expert among his peers at all mammals and game heads as well as birds. He has won countless ribbons & awards at the state, national & world levels over the years. In 1999 Brian won Best in World title at the World Taxidermy Championships held in Springfield, IL. Brian is still an active competitor, more recently winning National Champion in 2014. Add to that 3 more best of shows, 5 WASCO awards, and the 2016 Joe Meder - Masters of Masters Game Head in Iowa, Brian has proven to be a worthy competitor. He has judged several shows in the past (IA, IL, WI, SD, MO and Canada), and his critiques are clear and precise. Mammal and Gamehead Judge Lance Van Dusen: My interest in taxidermy star ted in college as a hobby. I attended Mis-soula Valley Taxidermy School in the spring of 2001. My education furthered with a part time job with Todd Kranau, owner of Masterpiece Taxidermy in Blue Hill, NE. While working under Todd, I had the opportunity to quickly understand the importance of quality work and customer service. I launched my full time business, Wildlife Reflections Taxidermy Studio, in 2005. Learning to apply anatomy, originality, artistic flow and expressionism to my work has provided me a path to be a leader in the industry. I am still focused on these principals in my professional and competition pieces. My wife, two children and I have settled in Law-son, MO, a small town outside of Kansas City, MO. I consider myself a Gamehead and Life-sized mammal specialist. My career incorporated judging in 2013. I am eager to share my knowledge and help expand the Taxidermy industry. I learn something new each time I give a seminar or judge an event. I encourage any questions or thoughts you may have on troublesome areas regarding taxidermy. A few thoughts on competing and competition work.

Should be used as a learning tool, no matter what level you are at in your career Focus on details and symmetry Keep the habitat and pedestal base simple Proof of original work or custom alterations of a commercial form are welcome and needed!!!
