3GPP2 Vision

The 3GPP2 Steering Committee (SC) created an Advanced Technology Evolution (ATE) AdHoc to investigate technology advancements 10 years into the future October 2005

SC ATE AdHoc addressed advancements in:– Radio interface– Radio access networks– Core network– System capabilities– Cross technology mobility

Technology Evolution Framework describes the high level vision. This document is driving the work of 3GPP2 in 2007 and beyond.

August 2006

The requirements for the evolved network have been fully defined.

December 2006

3GPP2 is in the process of reviewing its scope and charter with respect to work beyond 3G such as that for IMT-Advanced.

– Forward link: data rates up to 288 Mbps

– Reverse link: data rates up to 75 Mbps

– Average network latency: 16.8 msec

• Optimizes the Air-Interface to support Voice over IP (VoIP) • Enables the convergence of:

– IP-based voice

– Broadband data

– Multimedia services

– Information technology, entertainment, and consumer oriented electronic services

• Utilizes an IP-based flatter and simplified network architecture• Commercial availability is expected in early 2009

*Based on 2x20 MHz FDD band allocation and 4x4 MIMO. *Based on 2x20 MHz FDD band allocation and 4x4 MIMO. Latency is based on a 32-byte Return Trip Transmission (RTT). Latency is based on a 32-byte Return Trip Transmission (RTT).

Next Generation Technology Convergence

• The use of IETF protocols in the Converged Access Network will smooth the way for additional network-technology convergence– PMIP (Proxy Mobile IP)– Diameter– EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) based framework

• Work is currently in progress to support inter-working with non-3GPP2 technologies

• 3GPP2 is eager to engage other standards bodies to converge the next-generation Air-Interface and Access Networks

UMB Evolution to IMT Advanced

• UMB is uniquely positioned as the next generation technology due to its design with both:– A scalable air-interface

– A scalable network architecture

• Future UMB systems (air-interface and network) can evolve to support IMT-Advanced targets of 100 MHz bandwidth and 1 Gbps peak data rate with backward compatibility to UMB-1

• Member companies will provide inputs to formulate a detailed evolution roadmap in 2H07
