3rd Grading Period POETRY REVIEW
These terms and skills will be tested on the 3rd six weeks exam:
Figurative Language
Personification: When a non-human object is given human characteristics. Alliteration: The repeated consonant sound at the beginning of words. Hyperbole: An extreme exaggeration. Metaphor: The direct comparison of two unlike things (“like” or “as” is not used to make
these comparisons). Onomatopoeia: the use of words whose sounds echo their meanings, such as buzz and
gargle. Rhyme: Repetition of sounds at the end of words. Repetition: a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis
or unity. Simile: A comparison between two unlike things using the words like or as.
