Message from Rex Amack, Director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

Welcome to the 43rd Annual Cornhusker Trapshoot – the nation’s largest event of its kind. As I retire this spring after nearly 45 years with the Commission, it is perhaps fitting that I end my 24 years as Commission director at the time of year this outstanding event takes place – the tremendous growth of the Cornhusker is one of the things I’ve most enjoyed seeing during my tenure, and I truly hope to see more young men and women continue to enjoy this wonderful life sport in the years to come.

Male, female, tall, short – trapshooting truly is one of the few sports where everyone competes on equal ground and has a great chance to win on any given day. The sportsmanship displayed and safety record of this great event is testament to the wonderful character of its participants and coaches.

Many thanks to the Nebraska Trapshooting Association and all of the donors and volunteers who help make this wonderful event a reality each year. Good luck to all of this year’s participants.

Rex Amack

This gun is built on the proven 712 action but features a 30 inch barrel with a 10mm stepped rib designed to pattern high for rising trap targets. This model is ideal for beginner shooters or parents looking to outfit their FFA or high school trap shooter with their first gun. This model is very simple to operate and maintain, plus the gas operated system and the full size target stock makes recoil seem nonexistent.

This Year’s ProgramMay 3, 4, 5, 2012 are the dates for the 43rd

Annual Cornhusker High School and Junior High School Trapshoot at the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association in Doniphan, NE. High school events (grades 9-12) will be held on Friday and Saturday, with junior high events (grades 6-8) held on Thursday.

High school competition will feature 100, 16-yard targets on Friday and 100 handicap targets on Saturday. Handicap yardage will be determined by dividing the 16-yard score by 4 and rounding up any fractions. Minimum yardage will be the 18-yard line.

The junior high program consists of 100, 16-yard targets shot on Thursday, starting promptly at 9 a.m..

Two practice traps will be available each day. Friday and Saturday programs begin at 8 a.m.4-H Division

To be designated as a 4-H squad, all shoot-ers must be members of the same 4-H shooting club. Members of 4-H clubs other than shooting clubs may not declare 4-H eligibility. If a 4-H team is comprised of shooters all from the same school and are all members of the same 4-H shooting club, then they must choose to compete as a 4-H team or as a school team by the registration deadline (April 25, 2012).Award Priorities

To provide awards to the greatest number of shooters, a priority schedule has been devised similar to the procedure used at the Nebraska State Registered Trapshoot. For those awards that may overlap, the following will apply:High School Award Priorities

Teams receiving a top 16-yard team award (six places) are not eligible for ladies 16-yard team awards.

Teams receiving a top handicap team award (six places) are not eligible for ladies handicap team awards.

Teams receiving a top overall team award (six places) are not eligible for ladies or overall team awards.

Note: Teams may only claim one trophy or medal per team event. For example, if a team score was high enough to either place 4th, 5th, or 6th in the 16-yard competition or the top three in the ladies 16-yard competition, that team would have to choose which award they wanted to receive.

Individuals winning a top three trophy in the 16-yard event are not eligible for a top three ladies trophy in the 16-yard event.

Individuals winning a top three trophy in the handicap event are not eligible for a top three ladies trophy in the handicap event or any of the yardage awards.

NRA All-Scholastic Cornhusker Team Scholarship

The Gene Ripa Family of Lincoln recognized long ago that education is the foundation upon which all high school competition is based. After lengthy involve-ment with the high school shooting sports, the Ripa Family established the Cornhusker All-Scholastic Shooting Team in 1993 to honor senior-level shooters who have excelled in the classroom.

The National Rifle Association has adopted this award and is providing a scholarship to each recipient.

Selection is based on unweighted 4.0 scaled cumulative grade points attained throughout the student’s high school career. To qualify for consideration, an administrator from the student’s school must submit a letter on school letterhead verifying the student’s cumulative grade point. Letters should be mailed to Gene Ripa, 3414 Old Dominion Rd., Lincoln, NE 68516 by April 9.

ATA Hall of Fame GrantThe ATA Hall of Fame annually awards a

sizeable grant to the Cornhusker Trapshoot fund in the name of youth shooting sports.

Notification of ScoreboardIt is your responsibility to notify the score-

keepers in the office, if you are eligible for special awards including lady, DU, second generation shooter, etc. Notification must be made before figuring the scores, and shooters should check the scoreboard to see that they are properly marked.

RulesATA rules will govern this tournament

where applicable. NTA directors have the final word in all reviews or discrepancies.

Please check scores after each 25 round. All corrections must be made before score sheets leave the scorer’s bench.

The referee/scorer shall keep an accurate record of each score of each contestant. If he/she rules “dead” or “lost”, the referee/scorer shall properly mark / or X for “Dead” and O

for “Lost” on the score sheet. Any target scored other than clearly with /, X or O, or which appears to be scored, with both X and O, shall be “lost” unless the word “Dead” is clearly printed beside it. The scores of the competition shall be official and govern all awards and records of the competition.

Entry RequirementsAll entrants must be academically eligible

and full-time students or mid-term graduates, who have successfully completed a Nebraska recognized hunter education course. Individual and team entries are welcome. All team members are automatically eligible for individual awards. Each team must have five shooters, all from the same school. Because some Nebraska schools include K-6 grades, and some junior high schools do not include grade 6, a junior high squad will be classified as a team if all grade 7 and 8 shooters are from the same school regardless if grade 6 shooters on that squad are from other schools. Schools may enter both teams and extra individuals. Teams must be officially designated by the deadline.

Entry Fees & DeadlineEntry fees are $40 per high school shooter

and $20 for junior high school contestants. Advance registration and payment is required, with an entry deadline of April 25, 2012. There will be no refunds of entry fees after the deadline date. Make your check payable to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation. Mail or fax to Patti Lacquement, 5120 NW 7th St., Lincoln, NE 68521, home: 402-435-8750, Fax: 866-225-3045, or email registration to [email protected].

Door PrizesAll participants are eligible for door prize

drawings. Winners will be posted, and prizes may be picked up at the office. Winners are determined by drawing a squad number and a post number from high school or junior events.

commemorative 43rd Shoot vest pin. Coaches should pick up their team’s vest pins when they check in. Each team will receive one pin for each shooter and one extra pin for each full team. Additional pins and select past pins may be available for $5 each.

Food and DrinkMeals are available throughout the

tournament, as are soft drinks, coffee and hot chocolate. Drinking of alcoholic beverages by minors or adults during the shoot or the award ceremony is strictly prohibited. Use of tobacco by anyone under age 18 is against Nebraska law.

Nebraska Conservation OfficersThe Nebraska Conservation Officers

Association annually presents an impressive trophy to the winning 16-yard high school team. Conservation officers have long supported youth shooting activities, and they observe firsthand the ethical influence that hunter education and programs like this are having on young participants.

Each year, officers from across the state volunteer to assist at the Cornhusker Trapshoot. Conservation officers have helped make the shoot run smoothly, safely and in a sporting manner for four decades.

Look at Shoot HistoryDave Wells, of Norfolk, founded the

Nationwide Championship Cornhusker Trapshoot in 1970, as a dual meet between Northeastern College and Chadron State College. The high school division was added in 1972.

Attendance continued to climb, and the shoot expanded to two days in 1975. That year, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission became a sponsor of the event, with Wells as shoot director, and the annual Cornhusker Cup was initiated.

By 1976, the shoot had become nationwide in scope and moved to Doniphan. The program was expanded to three days in 1977, and the junior high division was added in 1978. Some 671 shooters competed in the 10th Anniversary Cornhusker in 1979.

In 1987, Wells announced his retirement as director. The Game and Parks Commission assumed control of the event, naming Rocky Hoffmann as shoot director. Hoffmann was involved with the event for 35 years, beginning in 1974 until his retirement in 2010. Terry Brentzel came on board in 2010 as the assistant director. He is now the director of the shoot.

Dave’s 18 years of dedication to the tournament made its mark on the future of trapshooting, and the NGPC continues the tradition on which the Cornhusker was established. Record attentence has occurred for the past five years.

Golf Carts, Bikes, ATVs, etc.The use of all-terrain-vehicles of any kind is

limited to the area behind (south) of the trap range sidewalk.

At no time should vehicles be used between the sidewalk and shooting range or on the sidewalk during a shooting event. The exception are those vehicles used by shoot management to run the shoot including Game and Park officials.

The NTA and the Game and Parks Commission are not responsible for any accidents resulting from the use of such vehicles.

Private vehicles may not park in signed, individually dedicated parking areas. This includes shoot management parking spaces directly south of the clubhouse marked for DIRECTORS or in any VENDOR operating area.

This year, we will start all 22 traps at once with squads 1 through 22 on traps 1 through 22. Each squad will shoot all 100 targets on their starting trap (four rounds of 25). Each shooter MUST carry 50 shells to the line and will return to the gun rack to get 50 more shells at the end of the second round.

We are requesting that coaches assign an assistant to ensure all shooters from each team are present and ready to shoot at their assigned trap when their turn comes regardless of what time they are scheduled.

The schedule is only a guide. Last year, squads ran more than 1 hour ahead of schedule. You will be allowed only five minutes to make your squad. Make-ups will be allowed only if time permits.
