‘TANGAROA’Auckland, New Zealand, November 19, 2014 –

Introducing ‘Tangaroa’, the sparkling jersey the

Vodafone Warriors will unleash at the second

Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park in

Auckland on January 31 and February 1 next year.

The Canterbury of New Zealand kit for the Nines

extravaganza was offi cially unveiled today, the design

named after and paying homage to Tangaroa, the Maori

god of the ocean.

Vodafone Warrior Tuimoala Lolohea, who represented

the club at the inaugural NRL Nines this year, was excited

about the new kit after modelling it at a Canterbury of New Zealand photo shoot today.

“I like it. It’s a nice design and a really cool looking jersey,”

he said.

“It was great playing in the Nines this year and I’d love to

have the chance to wear this strip again at the tournament

next year.”

The strip features the paua shell, chosen to represent

Aotearoa (New Zealand); the paua is held in high regard

by Maori as a taonga (or treasure) from Tangaroa.

Designer Dave Burke said the paua shell’s colours

represent something unique and vibrant, therefore

capturing the competition and spirit of the NRL Nines.

Emerging from the chest of the jersey is the club’s

traditional tiki, defi ant and ready for the challenge that lies

ahead.

The mangotipi (white pointer shark) design on the body

of the jersey refl ects movement, speed and travelling.

Sharks also represent strength, determination and power,

all of which are attributes of a warrior.

Jerseys will be available from early December in adults’

and kids’ sizes. Shorts will be available in adults’ sizes

only.

I am gutted that I will be unable to attend this Saturday's 24th Maori Sports Awards at the Vodafone Events Centre, as I am away celebrating my 49th wedding anniversary with my wife, Lady Janice.Especially as my close mate, Stacey Jones ONZM and another good bloke, Phillip Tataurangi, will be inducted into the Maori Sports Hall of Fame.

MSA Programme SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL FESTIVAL NEXT WEEKOne of New Zealand's biggest school sporting

festival's hits off on Monday 24th November

when 136 secondary school volleyball teams

take to the court in Wellington and Invercargill

for the North and South Island Junior Secondary

School Volleyball Championships.

In Wellington, eighty-seven teams take part in the

North Island Championships at the ASB Sports

Centre in Kilbirnie, for students from Years 9 and

10.

Held for the fi rst time for many years in Invercargill,

the South Island Championships include forty-

nine teams playing at the brand new Stadium

Southland.

The North Island Championships again feature

teams from the strong Auckland and Bay of

Plenty regions in the top seeded positions, with

an almost even split between these regions for

the top sixteen rankings in the boys' and girls'

sections.

The top Girl's seed is Tauranga's always-strong

Otumoetai College, who have just taken out the

Bay of Plenty Championship, with challenges

expected to come from Auckland Champions

Westlake Girls High, last year's popular North

Island winners Manurewa High, and Bay of Plenty

runners-up Tauranga Girls College.

Leading the North Island Boys' section are

Auckland Champions Rangitoto College, with

the Aucklanders likely to be challenged by the

country's most successful school, Rotorua's

Western Heights High, who last week won the

Bay of Plenty Championship. Also challenging in

the Boys will be Rangitoto's strong North Harbour

neighbours Orewa College and 2103 Island

champions Westlake Boys, along with the up and

coming Manurewa and Trident (Whakatane) High

sides.

In the South Island, a similar two-way split in

the Girls' section has Tasman's Waimea College

and Nelson College for Girls leading the hunt

for top honours against Canterbury's Riccarton

and Aranui High Schools, while three Tasman

Boys' teams – Waimea and Nelson Colleges,

and Marlborough Boys High will face one major

Christchurch opponent in Burnside High. Edging

into the Boy's top eight rankings are Dunedin's

Bayfi eld High and Timaru Boys High, the only

'outsiders' seemingly in with a chance.

MĀORI SPORTS HALL OF FAME HONOURS LEAGUE AND GOLF LEGENDS

Legendary sports stars, rugby league player Stacey Jones and golfer Philip Tataurangi, will be

inducted into the Māori Sports Hall of Fame, Te Whare Mātāpuna o te Ao Māori, at the National Māori

Sports Awards later this year (Saturday 29 November 2014).

Stacey William Jones ONZM (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāpuhi) is widely regarded as the best New Zealand player

of his generation.

The 38-year-old played 46 tests for the Kiwis from 1995 to 2006 – six tests as captain in 2002 and 2006 – and

made a club record 261 NRL appearances. He also holds the record for most points (674) during his 12

seasons with the Vodafone Warriors.

Stacey is also a finalist in the Māori Sports Coach of the Year award.

Philip Mikaera Tataurangi (Ngāti Kahungunu) was the leading individual among a quartet of young men who

became the first New Zealand team to win the world amateur Eisenhower Trophy in Canada in 1992.

Highlights of Tataurangi’s professional career included winning the 1996 Australian PGA Championship and

the 2002 Invensys Classic on the PGA Tour. He is currently patron of the New Zealand branch of The First Tee,

a charity which promotes character development in youth through golf.

A world-class field of finalists will vie for top honours in 10 categories at this year’s National Māori Sports

Awards to be held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau on Saturday 29 November.

Set up to foster, promote and encourage Māori sports people in the pursuit of excellence, Te Tohu Taakaro o

Aotearoa was founded by the late Albie Pryor with Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu as Patron and Sir

John Turei as Kaumātua.

The fundraiser last night was for a young lady called Alana. She is 31 year old mum

who was diagnosed with an incurable cancer called carcinoid syndrome. The money

raised is going to fund her treatment in Australia, which will give here a longer life.

We raised over $20,000 on the night, which I thought was FANTASTIC!

Biography of Sir Peter LeitchSir Peter Leitch

One of New Zealand's most awarding, inspirational leaders. Sir Peter Leitch was born on the 8th May 1944 and had a disadvantaged childhood growing up, at secondary school he was diagnosed with dyslexia. He left school at the age of 15 and gained a job as an butchers apprenticeship, and soon after turned 16 he later moved to Auckland to continue his work as a Butcher.

After the move in 1971 he opened a butchery in Mangere East, Auckland, a friend of his suggested radio advertising, later when that began he said he recalled someone in a pub referring to him as “That Mad Butcher" and since then he was advertising his butchery all over New Zealand as "The home of the Mad Butcher"

In 2012 his Butchery chain "The Mad Butcher" had became very popular and made around 36+ stores across New Zealand.

He is well known for his support to Charity's across New Zealand and his passion for the New Zealand Warriors, Rugby League club.

He has given endless time and support to help others in need and with charity’s, an example of this is at the start of June this year he gave my Grandad and my family a wonderful experience of going to see the New Zealand Warriors Rugby team play by watching it in the corporate box with some legendary players from the past. This was a unforgettable moment seeing my Grandparents so happy seen as they lost there house in the Christchurch Earthquake of 2010 and my Grandfather had suffered a heart attack due to stress.
