First of all I’d like to welcome our matchofficials and our old friends from Trafford FC.It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for both teamsover the last few years, and Trafford’s situationis now seeing them clinging on with theirfingertips, a situation which I hope that the lastfew results might just help us avoid.

In my eyes the performances over the last fewweeks have been getting a lot better, thoughsometimes we are having to defend as thoughour lives depended on it. We are starting tomake ourselves a tough team to beat, and thisis giving us the confidence to go out to pressteams and go for the results - which are startingto come.

I was delighted with out performance atGrantham, and is was as solid as I’ve ever seena Rammy team play. During the entire matchthey only managed a couple of efforts(admittedly one was gilt-edged) but other thanthat they caused us no problems at all. e ladsput in the kind of industry and commitmentthat I would expect from them and are lookingincreasingly organised - this allows us to getmore on the front foot.

e conditions were a bit strange atGrantham, particularly the strong wind whichwe used more effectively than them. eychose to play with the wind first half, and failedto capitalise. e ground is huge and open, witha running track between the fans and the pitch, which is neither fair the supporters nor to theballbays (who may I say did a fantastic job offetching balls and keeping the game moving). As a fan it must have felt like everything washappening miles away - the complete oppositeof the Harry Williams Riverside.

It’s always in the fans’ minds that we shouldpick the winning team that worked so well lasttime out, but with the tiredness that started toshow massively in the Barwell game we’ve been

rotating things a bit to try and keep peoplefresh. Players understand that they aren’tdropped because they’re playing badly or areout of favour, but because we need then at thetop of their game when the next tie comesaround, be it Saturday or Monday, ursday orWednesday.

It’s been great to get some game time undermy belt again, and I think that me and Gassyup front together is a perfect match. We knoweach other’s games inside out and we knowwhere each other likes the ball. We also tend todrive each other to work hard, and thisdefinitely helps the team to push forward 10yards up the field, which is something that’sbeen desperately needed of late.

e transfer window closed last ursdaywith no players coming in or leaving. We didn’tfeel that adding more players would have beenof benefit as the right players weren’t available. We have quite a large squad to see us home, particularly with people out on loan that wecan call back at any time. We have 24 players intotal and we’re confident that will see usthrough the remaining games ok.

Due to deadlines I’ve had to write this beforethe Curzon game which, as always, will beextremely tough. John Flanagan always has histeam well prepared and well organised. I believewe are capable of going there and getting aresult, as we almost did against high-flyingBlyth.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s game and amvery conscious that you can’t underestimateany of the teams in this excellent division, irrespective of their position in the table. Ahandful of points can see you rise or drop tenplaces and we will have to start strongly and beon the top of our game tonight just as we dofor any game.

anks for your support - enjoy the game.

Welcome to the Harry WilliamsRiverside Stadium. A special welcome toour match officials and everyoneconnected with our good friends fromround the M60, Trafford FC. We’veenjoyed many games against tonight’sopponents and have an excellentrelationship with a club that to my mind,is very similar to us here at RamsbottomUnited.

Sadly, it does look as though they couldbe returning to Evo-Stik North nextseason, unless a miraculous run of resultsdrags them away from the trapdoor. I’veseen it happen before, mind you. ColwynBay were dead and buried this time lastyear but went on an incredible run ofsomething like eight victories in 15 days toescape the drop from Conference North.ey look as though they are about torepeat the dose again this season. en

there’s Hartlepool United who weredead and buried not long ago beforeRonnie Moore arrived to breathe life into

the corpse. At Trafford, that non-league legend

Graham Heathcote has taken over thereins, so whilst it is mathematically

possible, I guess there isno way they will give up

the ghost. Ipersonally hope theymanage the miracle,

although I’m sure they’ll forgive me if I saythey can do so without our help! We needthe points ourselves, although that leaguedouble over Grantham Town would havedone our lads spirits the world of good, coming as it did on the back of thedisappointing result and performanceagainst Barwell.

I write this before the Curzon game, where we went in as underdogs, but Ireckon we need another two wins topreserve our status, and I’m hoping thelads can perform more performances likethe Grantham one before the end of thismonth. en it will be a case of claimingtheir place at the club for next season, which will hopefully result in a lesstraumatic time than we have had thiscampaign!

LIKE A DESERTI, as usual, could not travel down to

Lincolnshire on Saturday, so instead madethe short hop to the JD Stadium to watchthe Shakers take on Southend. Good grief! When I walked on, I took one look at thepitch, cast my eyes to the skies, andmumbled to the ticket seller “How onearth is this still on?!”

We’ve taken some stick up here at theHWRS this season about the pitch, butours looked like the Sahara Desertcompared to the one at Gigg Lane.

Considering Bury had spent £150,000 onthe surface last summer, it was a disgrace. Why the referee felt it was OK to start thegame was beyond me. Within seconds it wasa case of “when” not “if” the game would beabandoned, and the paying spectators weretreated to a miserly six minutes before theinevitable happened.

e closest I have seen our pitch to thatwas when the River beside the ground brokeit’s banks a couple of years ago!

COMING UP….We’ve a big one on Saturday!Did anyone really expect us to be playing

FC United again after our last hosting? eyhave made great strides, but have becomefrustratingly stuck at this level over recentseasons. In the meantime we have come upon the inside to take our place alongsidethem.

I don’t think we’ll be playing them againnext year as I firmly expect to see them goup this time round.

So please arrive early on Saturday. Parkingwill be difficult, but to enable us not to haveto print tickets for this one, we have decidedto make entry by a single note to avoidqueues as change is dispensed. Admissionprices for Saturday are a straight-forward£10 adults and £5 concessions.

We are about to be out-supported, butplease back the lads to make sure we are notout-shouted.

A short trip back to Ashton on EasterMonday against another in-form team, soonce again, we need your backing. Let’s turnup in our numbers.

en it’s back here for the Doodson Cupsemi-final.

Despite everything that has happened thisseason, we could still end up with silver-wearin the cabinet as we attempt to overcomeFarsley and meet Warrington Town in theFinal.

Once again, give the lads your full backing.Enjoy your non-league football!

Bury’s match was abandoned afterjust six minutes! What happenedto just getting out the orangearmbands and carrying on?

Looking back to Saturday's game againstIlkeston I thought we were unlucky not taketake something from the game. Although theyhad most of the ball throughout the 90minutes and created a number of chances, especially first half, we competed well with ateam that are currently in one of the play offplaces.

First half we allowed them too much spaceand they caused us problems, and was it notfor Grant Shenton in goal it could have been avery different score line, however we managedto get an equaliser on the stroke of half timewhich gave us a much needed lift going into thebreak.

We had a chat at half time and quite rightlysome stern words to a few who weren't givingus enough within the game, and spoke aboutways in which to nullify them in midfield whichI thought worked well second half. Wefrustrated them much more and they startedto go long, which isn't their style of play. Webegan to grow in confidence. Although wedidn't create a great deal in terms of shots ongoal we did have some better attacking playout wide and with more belief and confidenceI'm sure the goals will come.

e penalty ten minutes from time was ablow as the lads had worked so hard andremained disciplined to ensure we didn't allowthem clear chances, which they had very little

of second half. Robbo was gutted after thegame he knows it was a rush of blood but that'sfootball and we move on.

On the injury front we hope to have IanBennett back for the weekend and Alex frost isnearly over his groin problem. DonalMcDermott is still not fit and we are unsurehow long he will be out for.

Robbo and I are constantly making phonecalls and enquiries for players who we believecan improve us but it's very difficult as goodplayers are either playing regularly for theirclubs or waiting for an opportunity, and clubsthat are pushing for promotion or play offplaces are unwilling to let players leave toprotect themselves incase of injuries or lack ofform. We are in a position were wins are vitalnow and we have to fight tooth and nail andshow bravery with and without the ball tomake this happen so we don't have to keeplooking over our shoulders with the leagueposition not yet comfortable.

Our opponents tonight are fighting for theirlives sitting second bottom of the table and Iknow a few of their lads they won't give up untilthe end, which will make this game in everysense of the word a cup final!

We need everyone pulling in the samedirection and hopefully we can do the thebusiness and bring the fans a much needed win.Enjoy the game

Welcome to the Harry Williams RiversideStadium. A special welcome to today’smatch officials, and of course, our visitors,Trafford and everyone involved with theclub.

We have had many a good game againstour Greater Manchester neighbours, buttonight’s contest is played against a slightlydifferent background to that of our pastmeetings. Both sides are desperate for thepoints.

Trafford will have been disappointed athow their season has been so far. eappointment of local man GrahamHeathcote may well prove to be a master-stroke, but there is no hiding the fact thatthe gap between them and ourselves is apretty tough one to overcome.

As for ourselves, we have now gone eightgames without a League victory, with thatrun shared between the two sets of

management teams that we have hadthis season.

From nudging the play-off spots, we arenow anxiously looking over our shoulderat the bottom four places, and it’s not a

happy place to be. I know we have gamesin hand, but they count for nothing if the

points aren’t gleaned.I reckon we need atleast 50 points tosecure our place inthis League next

season, and after all the enjoyment andsuccess we have had over recent years, surely we deserve to retain our positionthat we won with so much excitement atBamber Bridge last May.

ere are of course many ways to lookat the current predicament. To have themanagerial team and most of the playersdepart half-way through a season is abody-blow most clubs would struggle toovercome, and we all accept that. For anew and untested new management teamto try and put together a new squad atsuch a time is almost akin to asking themto knit fog. It’s a thankless task, and tocompound the process even further, thenumber of injuries we have alreadysuffered with, mainly as a result of playersnot playing regularly, has also hit us hard.

Some of the newcomers may find it astep too far. Others have the experience atthis level and just need more time to geltogether. However, training sessions arethin on the ground due to the amount ofmatches we need to catch up with, so forRobbo and Edgey to put their philosophiesinto practice on the training pitch is againproving difficult.

Pulling a new squad together whilstplaying the all-important games is hardlythe ideal course of action, but we have noalternative.

It is so frustrating to be going through

“to put together a new squadat such a time is akin toasking them to knit fog”

such a dismal run after all the success thisclub has had, but that is where we findourselves. As a club, we all need to stick thisout and hopefully progress through the nexttwo months and gain sufficient points tokeep our place at this level of the pyramid.

Our good friends from Trafford will behoping the same, and I, for one, would bedevastated if they were to succumb torelegation. I’ve always enjoyed going toShawe View, and the hospitality we receive

there, and to lose that one season afterregaining the rivalry would be verydisappointing.

In an ideal world both Trafford andRammy will stay up. Alas, as we know, noteverything in this world is ideal.

I wish everyone at Trafford all the best forthe rest of this season….but I’m sure they’llexcuse me if I add “after tonight”!

Enjoy your non-league football!

Compared with the previous 3 games even incontinuing defeat this was an improvedperformance from the Rams and one whichoffered at least a shard of optimism of awakeningfrom the nightmare. However now 5 games inthe shortcomings in the new regime's valiantattempts at squad reconstruction are all to plainto see and there has to be a question whether thesquad is good enough for the level the Rams arecompeting in. e over-riding sense is one of lackof pace mobility and composure both in attackand defence. When the opposition have the ballthe pitch looks big and when the Rams have it itis all too easy for them to make it look small.

Ilkeston are a good young footballing team buta little lightweight and might have been made tostruggle more on a heavy pitch. For the first 30minutes not much of anything happened.Ilkeston had the ball but did little with it whilethe Rams threat on goal came from sporadicsallies down the right flank by Osebi Abadaki.at changed on the half hour when JoeMacguire was allowed to glide into the boxunchallenged to meet a James Reid free kick. Hisfirm downward header was superbly saved withhis feet by Grant Shenton but he could do nomore than divert it back into Maguire's path andpresent him with the easiest of tap ins. For thenext 15 minutes Ilkeston attacked at will carvingout openings.

Only a succession of brave saves by Shentonprevented them not only from regaining thelead but taking a commanding lead. enagainst the run of play the Rams fashioned anequaliser. Luke Heron seemed deceptively off thepace in reaching an astute ball from ChrisBaguley but suddenly he was on the end of itand sent a smart cross shot past Jordan Smith.e keeper did well to get a hand to it and foragonising milliseconds the ball hovered betweenspinning in and out from the foot of the postbefore rolling in.

Ilkeston are a team who want, indeed are onlycapable of, playing out from the back. e Ramspushed up and by dint of catching the visitorsdefenders in possession and trying to be toocute for a time looked like they might go not towin. Smith did well on two occasions to divertdangerous crosses from the despairing head ofLee Gaskell and was well beaten by a drive fromBaguley which went inches the wrong side of thepost. e Rams though were always vulnerableto the pace of Ilkeston's attacks with the fullbacks horribly exposed and it was no surprisethat they retook the lead with 15 minutes left.A rash tackle inside the box on Jake Wrightresulted in a penalty. Reid stepped up Shentonguessed correctly got a firm hand to the ball butthe shot had too much pace on it to prevent itfinding the inside of the net.

So that leaves the Rams without a win nowsince the end of November and makes the homegame against Struggling Trafford a must wingame.

trafford fcno strangers to the troubles of rammy

e club was formed in 1990 under thename of North Trafford and was thebrainchild of David Brown, John Harrison,David Law and Bill Whitten, with both Brownand Law still directors to this day. eyoriginally shared their home ground, ‘ShaweView’, with Trafford Borough Rugby Leagueclub and joined the Mid-Cheshire LeagueDivision Two for the 1990/91 season.

In their debut season manager David Lawtook North Trafford to second place inDivision Two leading to promotion toDivision One; an outstanding start for thenew club. An added bonus for this successfulstart saw the club obtain sole tenancy ofShawe View, via a thirty year lease, whichresulted in substantial ground improvementstaking place. After a season in Division One,where they finished in 4th place, ‘e North’,as they are affectionately known, successfullyapplied to the North West Counties League(NWCL), finishing the 1992/93 season in 7thplace. A stunning second half to the nextseason saw the club win twenty out of theirtwenty-two matches, gaining them secondplace and promotion to Division One of theNWCL. Promotion was granted after furtherground improvements took place, thisincluded the instillation of floodlights andthe building of the South Stand.

e club was launched under their presentname, Trafford FC, in 1994 and finished in 4thplace in the league and were also beatenfinalists in both the Manchester Senior and

Carling Cups. e next year saw them go onebetter in the league with a 3rd place finishand Trafford also reached the last sixteen ofthe FA Vase, beaten by the eventual winners,Brigg Town. e steady rise of Trafford FCcontinued and they won the NWCL DivisionOne and were promoted to the UnibondLeague Division One, with David Law alsoclaimed the NWCL Manager of the Yearaward.

Trafford’s stay in the Unibond League lastedfive seasons and saw them pick up both theUnibond First Division Cup and President’sCup along the way. Unfortunately after adifficult year, which saw them use twomanagers, ‘e North’ were relegated back tothe NWCL in 2003.

It would be another four seasons untilTrafford tasted success and promotion again.Under a new management team, with GedKielty as Player Manager, ‘e North’ won theVodkat League Championship by elevenpoints and were promoted back to theUnibond League for a second time afteroriginally winning the title in 1997. FromSeptember 2007, they went on an incredibletwenty-nine league game unbeaten run, including eighteen straight wins. eachievement’s kept on coming with GedKielty being named Manager of the Year inhis first season.

After consolidating their position in theFirst Division North with a 15th place finish,Trafford claimed their second Unibond

League Presidents Cup, nine years on fromtheir first success. e start of 2009/10 sawthe return of former Trafford stalwart GarryVaughan to take over the managerial reinsfrom Ged Kielty. During the 1990’sVaughan made 305 appearances andscored 89 goals in his seven seasons as aplayer with Trafford. 2010 saw them finishin a credible 12th position and striker ScottBarlow scored 21 goals to become the clubsall-time leading goal scorer, pushing hismanager to second place in the historybooks.

A poor start to the 2009/10 season led toGarry Vaughan making a number ofpersonnel changes at the club. esechanges included bringing back formerAssistant Manager Wayne Goodison andthis seemed to change Trafford’s fortuneson the pitch, where they gained arespectable 14th place in the league.Trafford gained promotion to the Evo-Stick

Premier Division in 2012/13, via the Play-Offs beating Cammell Laird 4-2 onpenalties after extra time on their ownground.

Last season saw Trafford playing at thehighest level in their history, andconsidering this they had an extremelysuccessful first year. ey finished in 10thposition in the table and beat FootballConference side Hyde to win theManchester Premier Cup at Bury FC’s GiggLane.

is season has so far proved a difficultone for Trafford, with only five league winsto date, the club currently sit in the bottomthree of the Premier Division. e lastmonth has seen a number of changes inplaying staff since the arrival of newmanager Graham Heathcote, as Traffordtry and pull themselves out of therelegation zone.

meet the away fanstrafford’s andy glinka fills us in

What's the mood like in the camp at themoment?

e mood in the camp(players/supporters) is ok considering ourposition. Obviously we have recentlyacquired a new manager and with it a lotof new players (very similar to yoursituation recently). e new players seemlike a great bunch and are at least puttingin the effort to try and save us, which inturn is making the supporters proud.

Are things going to plan would you say?e plan at the start of the season was to

build on last seasons 10th place butrealistically, the supporters would havetaken just staying up. So are things going toplan, well I guess not. However, as we havea new manager and considering ourposition when Graham took oversupporters are perhaps resigned to theinevitable but we just want to see somefight, and fingers crossed that will bringresults, and fingers, toes, ears and eyescrossed, that keeps us up.

Can you talk us through the last coupleof results please?

Our last two results have both been awayon long trips, Stourbridge (finished 1-1)and Stamford (3-3). Both results have giventhe club something to be proud of wherethe players gave their all and showed some

spirit. e Stourbridge game in particularwas very encouraging where we led upuntil the 93rd minute before theyequalised. Considering Stourbridge's homerecord this season, we took a lot of heartfrom that game. However, we know its winswe need and hopefully they will come.

For you who are the players to watch atthe moment, and why?

With our previous manager leaving, it ledto an exodus of players that were clearlyplaying for him. Such as Shelton Payne, who would have been my one to watch, however whilst he was a quality player, itmay prove a blessing as he was our go toman all the time, over relying on him. Nowother players need to step up and so far, that has been the case. Astley Mullhollandlooks a class act and we also look moredangerous from set pieces, which bringsplayers like Adam Jones in to play.

How long have you been a supporter?I first went to see Trafford about 10 years

ago but have only been going consistentlyfor the last 3 years.

How would you describe your supporters? Our supporters are loyal, kind, genuine

and friendly. We look after each other (andothers too!) ere aren't loads of us but weare very passionate!

What are your most memorable timeswith the club, and what sticks out for youthis season?

My most memorable moment as a fan wasthe play off semi final win at New Mills in2013. Bank holiday Monday, sun shining andour support was incredibly. Obviouslywinning the final is up there too but for me,the whole day out against New Mills will behard to beat.

As for this season, well I'll be honest... therehas been little to cheer. However, the awayday at Stourbridge was cracking. I wasfearing the worst before hand, had a few toomany beers and sang my head off for 94minutes and left with nothing but pride, agreat day out!

How would you change the club if you wonthe lottery?

If I won the lottery I would pay for the newclub house we have planned. I would alsodonate money to help the club get by andimprove (players wages fascilities etc), butonly on the proviso I get to wear thenumber 9 shirt in a game haha!

What are your hopes for the rest of theseason?

My hopes... wow, if we stay up that'd betruly amazing. I can't hope for anythingmore than that!

How would you describe Trafford forany visitors, and what one word wouldyou use to describe the ground catering?

Trafford is a very friendly atmosphereand we try and make away fans feelwelcome. e facilities may not be themost modern but it has character. If bycatering you mean alcohol (as this is all Ihave ever had) then its 'jobs a gooden'. Igenuinely have never eaten from thesnack bar (seriously) but I know the staffbehind there are wonderful and veryfriendly.

What's the best pub for a pre-match /post-match pint, and why's it a goodone?

Personally the best pub for a pre-matchpint (or three) is 'e SteamHouse',about a mile away by Urmston Trainstation. I would advise away fans to tryout the cracking selection of beers andales then jump on the train to Chassen

Road in time for the match. AfterwardsI would have a pint in our littleclubhouse or have a very short walk tothe 'Bird ith Hand'.

What's your connection with the club?Apart from being a fan, I am the

chairman of the supporters club. It’s arole that I love and I have made lots offriends from!

Tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Andrew Glinka, aka Glinks

or Glinka. I am 35 years young, marriedwith 2 children ( a little girl aged 3 and astep son aged 9). I teach and work withan autistic child at a primary school inManchester. My hobbies include tryingto keep my marriage together whilstattempting to follow Trafford FC homeand away, whooping people at tabletennis and tasting various ciders.

I can't hope for anythingmore than that!”

rammy in exilesky sports statto richard isaacs

Good evening everyone and I hope I findyou all well tonight ahead of this matchagainst Trafford, which has now on taken allmanner of importance for our club.

Well, it is 2.41am on Sunday morning andI am working and providing statisticalinformation to our studio for a match thatEngland actually might win against SriLanka in the Cricket World Cup. By thetime this column goes to print, you will allknow the answer to that and know theprophecy or tomfoolery of my prediction.Sri Lanka are going quite well chasingEngland's 309-6 so you never know. is isbecoming a regular feature of my world atthe moment, staying up until the wee-smallhours watching the sun shining in variousparts of the Southern Hemisphere and sixesbeing clubbed for fun (175 in total asDilshan pummels Stuart Broad into thestands).

It has been a busy tournament so far forme. e records have tumbled aplenty -Chris Gayle's monster 215, AB deVilliers'

sensational batting feats,England's woeful showing in

Wellington, Tim Southee's sevenwickets to name but a few of thehighlights so far and not forgettingthe amazing New Zealand vAustralia match a few days ago. Ithas certainly kept me entertainedand certainly kept me from mycomfortable bed!

I have to say that Saturday was another ofthose decidedly tough days. e rugby thatI watched was entertaining as my localteam, Tottonians, continued on their way atthe top of the table with a good win over aside who had won their last 10 games. Butmy round ball interests endured anotherdifficult afternoon, none more so thananother three points exiting from theground, giving us the unenviable record of6 points from the last 36.

But, let us be positive. My apologies if mylast column was a little bit fierce in mycriticism - it was not meant to be. But as apassionate Rammy supporter, who, like somany of us, have enjoyed such wonderfulsuccesses, seeing our team with a long stringof 'L' in the result column is hard to swallowand the Ilkeston defeat on Saturday wasanother which got away and now, ratherthan the excitement of what might be atthe top of the table, the 'R' word is startingto creep into the psyche of the supporterson the forum and, no doubt, starting toreverbrate around the dressing room too.

at brings its own pressure, when the gapbetween those in the drop zone and thosejust outside is narrowing game on game. And there is little time for the gellingprocess to continue - it is starting to edgeever closer to make or break.

However - and, yes, it is a different team -BUT ..... who remembers a couple of thegreat successful seasons where we ran into

the end of the season on a crest of a wave, withwins aplenty and honours of greatness piledupon us? We all do. An unbeaten March. Anunbeaten April. e mammoth month ofMarch's fixtures kicks off tonight and we have abounty of games to play. So, lets plug into thatmemory and cheer the boys on. I appreciatethat there has been some criticism of the team, some of the players not being good enough andwe have miserable injury list too to counter. Butsomething is going to click and its going to clickvery soon. So we need to show a little bit offaith in Robbo and Edgy's plans, the players onthe park and give them our full support.

I am hoping to be able to get to the matchnext Tuesday night down at Stourbridge, whichis sort of west side of Birmingham (not far fromHalesowen, where we went before). It's abouttwo hours from home so I am very tempted tomake the journey up the A34, M40, M42 andthe little bit of the M5 to come and cheer thelads on. I want to watch this new team andmake my own thoughts on what I see, ratherthan consider the thoughts of others - so all

being well, I will be in the West Midlands for thisone.

My final comment tonight (as Sri Lanka startto pile on the runs and it becomes slightlyworrying from an England point of view), is ona personal note and many of you will have seenmy shrinking frame over the last few years. Well,I am delighted to announce that I collected my7st lost award last week with Slimming Worlddown in Warsash (a small village betweenSouthampton and Fareham), which took myoverall total of weight lost since recording myvery heaviest to nearly 9st now. As you canprobably imagine, I am absolutely thrilled tohave achieved this but I still have another 4st tolose so will be continuing to avoid Harry's piesfor the time being!

Hopefully see you next Tuesday night downin Stourbridge and I can't wait to give it a bigshout of "COME ON RAMMY!". e lads needit .....

STOP THE PRESS!Sunday 5.33am - Sri Lanka win by 9 wickets with16 balls to spare. Bloody hell!

Ilkeston - another whichgot away, but notwithout a hell of a fight!

Well, according to the old song, It’s aLong Way to Tipperary but, I’d wager thatBlyth on a Tuesday night is not muchshorter. e Rams fixture up at BlythSpartans was originally planned for aSaturday but, with our January calendardecimated by the weather we now had tomake the journey last Tuesday. is reallywas a shame as I’m sure we would havehad a large travelling support but, a sixhour round trip really was a big ask formany during the working week. As itturned out we managed to get quite a fewtravelling up to the north-east andbraving the detours around Newcastle toensure we had some support for the ladson the night.

A few of us had managed to arrange amini Rammy Rocket for the journey, subsidised by the club, so at 3.30 lastTuesday six hardy souls were boarding avery plush, six seater Mercedes people

carrier. I was joinedby Little Katie,Carlsberg, Sir Paulof Cropper and ofcourse, eMasseys, Andy andHilary. Harry sathimself up frontwith the driver,Kevin (who hadtaken us to Kendaland Lancaster the

previous season). So, we had a longjourney ahead but, as those of you whoknow them, any trip with Andy and SirPaul on board is never going to be a dullone. We were soon making our waynorthbound with the main topics ofconversation being Sir Paul’s pasty and theidentity of Jim McDonald on the forum, with some of us convinced Mr McDonaldwas on board the mini Rammy Rocketwith us. Before we knew it we wereheading past Wetherby racecourse andmaking good progress through the rushhour traffic.

We arrived at Blyth’s Croft Park groundat 6.30 which meant we had plenty oftime to partake in a couple of pints ofBlyth Bitter. e subject of Blyth Bitter hadbeen discussed on the journey up with SirPaul saying it was a very nice pint but, with me arguing that the previous seasonit had tasted like Germoline. Well, Paulwon the argument and I must have had adodgy pint on my previous visit as tonightit went down very, very well. After acouple of pints, Carlsberg put in an orderfor our half time drinks (they have a greatsystem where you pre-order your halftime refreshments and, just like theshopkeeper in Mr Benn, they appear as ifby magic). We had been joined by ourhard working Matchday Secretary and allround nice guy, Andy Edmunson who haddriven up with Rooney the Physio.

from the darkside

Completing the travelling band ofUltras in the bar were Toppo, TobyTrotter and Alex Williams who hadtravelled up in the mini-mini RammyRocket. We were also joined, tenminutes into the game, by Paul andRita Gaskell and Grandpa Gassy, who itis great to have back on board since Leerejoined the club after his brief stint inthe F.A. Cup limelight with WarringtonTown. Not a bad effort from the ‘tinyteam’ and I salute each and every oneof you.

Spartans’ Crofts Park ground really issteeped in, mainly F.A. Cup, history andeven Birmingham City had struggledup here just a few weeks earlier, comingaway with a narrow 3-2 win aftertrailing to two early Blyth goals. On thejourney up we had discussed whatscore tonights game would be and let’sjust say that our hearts didn’t agreewith our heads. We gathered on the

terrace, behind the goal Rammy wereattacking in the first half, and it reallydid feel strange not having some of theregular Ultras alongside us to cheer thelads on. Although the terrace wassparse we were joined by the cast ofByker Grove, in the shape of someyoung Geordie whippersnappers, whotook great delight in singing, in verygood humour, You’re Just a Small Townin Blackburn, to us. Despite this beinggeographically incorrect, Little Katiedid point out that at least they haddone their homework on finding outwhere Ramsbottom actually was. Imust admit here that I tended to sit atthe back in Geography lessons atschool (apart from the 4th Year whenwe had Miss Bramble, she was, as wewould say back in 1980, well fit) so myknowledge of U.K. and Europeanlocations is based purely on if the townhas a football team or not.

Blyth Spartansjust a couple ofweeks ago when they hostedBirmingham City in the FA Cup

It’s good to know then that the kids fromByker Grove now know which tiny town ourtiny team hails from and we have helped withtheir education.

e match itself was possibly the most onesided I had ever seen and not reallysomething to dwell on in these pages. Indeed,we could, and probably should, have been agoal down after thirty seconds and onlyShents, with the first of his many saves thatevening, kept us in it. Well, kept us in it forthe next few minutes until Blyth finally took

the lead, and to be honest we knew then itwas game, set and match. Not long after theyadded a second goal and just before the halftime whistle, makeshift defender Robbo gothis second yellow card. e opinion amongstthe travelling support was that both cardshad been a little soft and another referee onanother night would not have given either. We were also in agreement that theresurrection of our club is not being helpedby Lady Luck who seems to have forgottenhow to shine her light on us recently.

We shifted to the opposite terrace for thesecond half and despite a change oflocation there was no change on the pitch.Although the players were far from theirbest, Rammy were actually up against a verystrong, very fast, cohesive unit in BlythSpartans. ey had a couple of tall wingers, the tallest I have seen in some time actually, who gave our full backs a torrid time andthat ginger forward who found nationwidefame in November when he scored thewinning goal against Hartlepool in F.A. Cup.ey managed to create a couple moregoals in the second half and Rammy werelucky to come away with only a 4-0 defeatat the final whistle - don’t be surprised ifBlyth are pushing for the play-offs comeApril. e highlight of the evening came atthe final whistle when the Rams Army

(a small army I admit, but still an army)started singing We Love You Rammy, WeDo, prompting the players to come oversalute us, with Shents shaking all our handsand thanking us for coming.

After a quick pint back in the clubhousewe were boarding the mini Rammy Rocketfor the long journey home at around 10.00.As if the journey home wasn’t long enoughwe hit some road closures which saw ushaving to make a detour through Newcastlecity centre and over the River Tyne (I’m sureGazza and Lindisfarne will be pleased tohear it actually did have fog on it). Weeventually landed back in Rammy at 1.30,feeling tired and emotional, but despite this,we had all had a great time and would do itall again for our beloved Rams.

(Many thanks to Ste Heard for the photos)

After a couple of pretty hopelessperformances, Saturday felt to be agreat improvement, particularly againsta full-time team. Did it feel better tothe lads?

Parts of our game are getting better. Our shape was good in the second halfand didn't allow their very creativeteam to create many chances. atbeing, said we know we need to startcreating chances - Rammy is a teamknown for its creativity. We are still awork in progress we will get it right Ihave no doubts about that.

Robbo seems to give everyone aroasting when he's playing. I'm sure hecan be hard work at times, but does hispresence give everyone the extra umpf?

We all know Robbo is a verypassionate player and now even moreso because he is gaffer, but he doesknow how to address each playerdifferently in order to get the best outof them.

A good performance and a goalfrom youngster Luke Heron. Was

he made up?Yeah Luke will be more than

happy with that finish - he's ayoung lad and wants to keep

on getting better and better.

We weren't as sure as the referee. Wasit a penalty?

It was yeah - I had no complaints.Stupid challenge, but one Robbo saidhe needed to make so I'll take his wordfor it. He knows the game and he saidsorry so we forget it now.

Do we have any news on the playersreturning from injury, particularlyDonal McDermott, Tom Williams andIan Bennett?

Tom is pretty much ready to comeback (hernia). Benno a couple weeksnow we think and Donal we’re notreally too sure about unfortunately.

Trafford seem to have been througha similar situation to us recently. It feelslike tonight is a chance to measure ourrecovery against theirs. Would youagree?

Definately we need a win tonight asdo they, so it will make for a very goodgame and one I'm looking forward to.Once we get that one win then the newlads can get taste of winning games atthis club and how it becomes a habit.

I know it's not nice to be on thereceiving end of these defeats, but onepositive is that the Rammy supporterscan now fully appreciate the quality ofgoalkeeper we have - a good few told

me that you were head andshoulders the best player on thefield. I hope that's at least someconsolation.

I appreciate it and I do lovehearing compliments like that, which really helps my confidence. But I want wins more than anything -I'm a winner and I don't like losing. I’dmuch prefer the team to start winninggames so I can care a bit less about myown form.

Do you think that the wear on thepitch will have a big impact on theresults of upcoming matches, and is thatnecessarily a bad thing?

e pitch is holding up ok and I thinkI've played on worse this season so itshouldn't have too much of an impact. And it's the same for both teams. I'mnever a fan of using that as an excuse foranything.

I’d just like to say a quick thank you toall the fans who keep turning up whatever the weather and wherever it thegame may be. It means a lot to allthe players and you really are thetwelfth man so please stay behindus and keep singing your heartsout. And smack that drum.COYR!

I heard all kinds of opinions before, during and after Saturday’s defeat, andsome of them were a heck of a lot less thancomplimentary. I have to admit to havingthe horrible sinking feeling as I put on mycoat and scarf to head to the match, andafter the displays at Witton Albion andBlyth I really was fearing the worst - afterall, we were about to take the field againsta promotion-chasing team of young, full-time academy players!

I really do quite strongly object to peoplevoicing their negativity at the match itself, and if you’re one of those people thenmight I suggest you piss off back to leaguefootball. Rammy’s not the place for that -have your say after the game, and criticisewhoever the heck you want, but if you’retelling our players that they’re not fit towear the shirt then I don’t consider you fitto wear the scarf, whether you’ve paid toget in or not!

One of the worst experiences of footballthat I’ve ever had was a Boxing Day game Iwitnessed at Northampton Town,

football’s perennial yo-yo teamwho always seem to

bounce between thebottom two divisions.eir ground is quitemodern and bleak, with open corners

and a pretty wierdgrass bank behind the

stand, from which you can

watch the game. It feels like some kind ofland-fill or something and is utterlycharacterless, very much like the“supporters” I came across. It was hardly astirling performance, but with their crappyattendances the “supporters” really got thekind of players that the club could afford.e game progressed and the hard-working team managed to eke out a 2-0lead going into the half-time break. Ianticipated at least a little bit ofenthusiasm from the fans, but I anticipatedwrongly! In the queue for the tea-bar, inthe gents toilets, in the bar and the standall you could hear was a constantmumbling that “it won’t last” and “just youwatch them throw it away!”

As the team came out for the second halfto almost ironic cheers from the home“faithful” you just knew that they definitelywere going to throw it away, and you knewwhy - because their fans were absolutecrap! e ‘twelfth man’ that their crowdshould have been was not absent (whichwould have been preferable), but he waslike some kind of alcoholic wife-beater.Sure enough the opposition (I forget whoit was) bagged a first to make it 2-1, andthe mumblings and grumblings increasedin volume - the goal even got a sarcasticcheer. In went the second, despite thevaliant efforts of the scrappingNorthampton lads, and sure enough, withten or so minutes on the clock, theinevitable reverse was completed and the

supporters clubon the terraces of rammy

miserable sods in the stands could shuffleaway early, happy in the knowledge that allwas well with the world - that their teamwas indeed as crap as they had expected.

Contrast that with the truly epicachivements of that legendary Republic ofIreland team who set Italia 90 on fire, notjust progressing beyond the qualificationgroup, but taking Germany to a penaltyshoot-out. I recall a drunk Irish friend ofmine commenting at the time that JackieCharlton had “turned a complete showerof shite into a proper world cup team”. Iremember those games really well - a drawagainst England, a draw against Holland, adraw against Germany - all fought for by acomplete “shower of shite” and NiallQuinn. e important word is “fought”.e Irish chased down every ball, battledfor everything, and completely ran theirmediocre backsides into the groundthrough sheer pride of representing theircountry at the World Cup - and they

returned to Ireland as National heroes! Now I know that Saturday’s result at the

Riverside wasn’t a good one. I know thatthe performance at times was more than alittle shaky, and I know that one or two ofthese players wouldn’t be first on the teamsheet for Louis van Gaal, but youabsolutely can’t fault the commitment ofany of those lads that pulled on theRammy shirt on Saturday. Lee Pugh playedthe game of his life, and Callum Joneslooked like he’d been dragged through ahedge backwards by the time he staggeredoff the field after 90 minutes defendingagainst a team of full-timers! ey were justtwo, but I could name anyone.

You may not be happy with what you’reseeing, but from where I’m standing thesefellas are working their arses off and areabsolutely deserving of that shirt, so ifyou’re one of the moaners who are dishingout the stick then lay off a bit eh.
