1960 2000 1980 Chinook Centre now occupies what was once a drive-in theatre that opened in 1949. The first movie to play at the Chinook Drive-in was “Perils of Pauline”, featuring Betty Hutton. Calgary Mayor Don Mackay (1950-1959) promoted the concept of the white cowboy hat as a symbol of the city, presenting them to visiting dignitaries. A tradition that is still alive and well today! In 1971, Chinook and Southridge announced the merger to become one mall. A 1973 expansion kept the drive-thru road open between the two malls, and included a bridge over the road. In 1974, construction merging Chinook and Southridge was completed. The cost of a men’s athleisure jacket was $4.99 in 1974! In 1991, Simpsons became Sears. Woodwards’ closed and Hudson’s Bay announced its opening in the space in 1993. Sears opened its renovated space in 1994, previously occupied by Simpsons. In 1999, a time capsule was buried in Centre Court to be opened 1000 years later on December 31, 2999. Canadian singer-songwriter George Fox held a meet and greet at the centre in 1999. Chinook Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary by publishing a commemorative book called Chinook Centre: A City within A City . Chinook Centre officially completed its expansion with 75 new retailers in late 2010. In 2012, Chinook Centre became the home to a family of four polar bear sculptures. The two biggest polar bear sculptures at Chinook Centre weigh roughly 1,250 pounds (570 kg) — not far off the weight of an actual polar bear. The sculptures were created and built in Calgary by Heavy Industries - the company behind the iconic bent-wire head installation featured outside The Bow building in Calgary’s downtown core. In 2014, Nordstrom debuted in Canada at Chinook Centre. Chinook Centre was officially renamed CF Chinook Centre in 2015. In 2015, CF Chinook Centre introduced CF SHOP! Text, a mobile concierge service which will give consumers access to guest services at their fingertips. CF Chinook Centre hosted the JUNO Fan Fare in 2016 featuring Canadian musicians such as Alessia Cara, Dean Brody, Marianas Trench, Walk Off the Earth, and more! In 2017, Cadillac Fairview entered into an 11-year partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee, designating all CF properties, including CF Chinook Centre, as Home of Team Canada. SportChek opened its first SportChek Women concept store at the centre in early 2017. 2017 was a big year for CF Chinook Centre, as Cadillac Fairview partnered with the City of Calgary to build a new 61 Avenue S. W. pedestrian bridge across Macleod Trail. Based on vehicle traffic numbers alone, approximately 80,000 vehicles pass through the intersection beneath 61 Avenue S.W. Pedestrian Bridge. More than 2,000 pedestrians cross the bridge daily. The bridge spans more than 120 metres and took just over a year to complete. The intersection outside of CF Chinook Centre (61 Avenue SW and Macleod Trail) is the busiest pedestrian corridor outside of Calgary’s downtown core. The beloved Albertosaurus at CF Chinook Centre was donated to TELUS Spark in 2017. In early 2018, Saks Fifth Avenue opened its first location in Western Canada at CF Chinook Centre. In fall 2018, Louis Vuitton opened in CF Chinook Centre, making this location the first true free-standing store in an enclosed mall in Canada. CF Chinook Centre completed its $17 million renovation to its Dining Hall in 2018. The newly redesigned Dining Hall in Centre Court features 835 seats and 20+ food retailers. In 2019, Cineplex at CF Chinook Centre introduced Calgary’s first 4DX auditorium. Canadian musicians, LGBTQIA+ advocates and authors Tegan and Sara held a meet and greet at Chapters to celebrate their new memoir in 2019. Mervyn “Red” Dutton, Reg Jennings and Frank Kershaw formed Chinook Shopping Centre Ltd., and the development began. The centre was originally designed as an open- air shopping complex anchored by Woolworth’s. Before it became Chinook Centre, the centre was originally two different malls - Southridge and Chinook. The longest standing tenant at CF Chinook Centre is Chinook Bowladrome, which opened in 1960. CF Chinook Centre’s south wing features designer brands, many of which are exclusive to the Calgary market such as Burberry, Tiffany & Co., LV and Canada Goose. CF Chinook Centre is ranked as one of the top 10 largest indoor shopping malls in Canada. CF Chinook Centre was named Calgary’s most profitable mall. CF Chinook Centre currently boasts more than 250 stores/services. CF Chinook Centre currently has more than 5,500 parking spots, including 6+ EV chargers. Chinook Centre now occupies what was once a drive-in theatre that opened in 1949.
