Hello everyone and welcome to tonight’sfirst ever match between our two teams.I’d like to welcome the match officials aswell as the officials, players and support-ers of Hyde United. Despite what youmight have heard about Tuesday’s match,Rammy is a lovely, friendly little club, andI’m sure you’ll enjoy your visit to our town.

The fracas at the end of Tuesday’smatch was what I would consider juvenilebehaviour by a number of people. Therewas a lot of pushing and shouting with noreal intent and the refereee dealt with thesituation correctly, in my opinion. Thatsaid, neither I, nor the club, will toleratethat kind of behaviour nor its effect on ourreputation and these feelings have beenmade very clear to everyone involved. This kind of mark on a club’s reputationtakes a lot to shift, and we have enoughon our plate without having to considerthis kind of stupidity.Tuesday’s performance was heartening,

and there were a lot more positives to thedisplay than at Rushall, though there is stilla long way to go. At the moment we’remissing a killer instinct in that final thirdand, although some people would placethe blame at the striker’s door, it’s impor-tance to realise how important service andsupport are. We need bodies to pick uploose balls in there and create the oppor-tunities. We did have a lot of posession, but we need more penetration, whichrequires some composure and a bit ofguile. We looked a lot more dangerousthan we had at Rushall, and passed theball quickly and accurately, though we sel-dom looked like breaking through the solidBuxton defence. This is a situation we’reworking hard on rectifying.I’d like to take the opportunity to thank

the supporters for your patience. You willhave seen some of the style of ‘proper’football that I’m intent on seeing us play, and I’m sure you’ll appreciate that it takestime to get this kind of new squad working

together effectively. I guarantee that theperformances will come good - at times onTuesday you could see us quickly andaccurately moving the ball around in waysthat Rammy has never seen before. Thiscan only improve with time, and willbecome the norm rather than the excep-tion in our play.We are grateful for the words of support

that we’re getting from fans, particularlythose around the dug-out. They can be arowdy bunch, and I don’t always agreewhat some of them have to say, but theyare passionate about Rammy and don’thide behind a pseudonym or a computer.I won’t take any abuse for our players, andam not afraid to confront anyone aboutthis, but I am happy to speak with anyonewho approaches us respectfully.I do read the club forum now and again,

and I understand that some people are nottoo impressed with the way things aregoing. Everyone has their opinion, and isentitled to it - I’m not going to pass judge-ment on opinions. It does gall me a littlewhen people are just factually wrong, orwhen they have a direct and unfair swipeat certain players. We have a lot of youngplayers, and a team which is trying to findits feet. Also, certain players will reallycome into their own when this team startsto work together effectively. Some mightnot yet be good enough, and we will workwith them on improving their game, butcalling players “finished” or having a directgo at them won’t do anyone’s confidenceany good, as we saw with Shelton Payne.

Shelton’s main issue, as it was withDonal McDermott last season, is wherehis head and his heart is. He has greatskill and ability, but that doesn’t shine ifyour confidence is shot. If we dig deepand support players who main not be per-forming particularly well, then we will helpthem to overcome these issues, and willultimately have loyal players who weartheir heart on their sleeve.jo

Welcome to the Harry WilliamsRiverside Stadium for today’s Evo-Stik Premier Division game againstHyde United. To the best of my knowledge, the

Rams have never played Hydebefore, so it’s a special welcome toeveryone connected with this fine oldclub, and a warm welcome also tothis afternoon’s match officials. It’s great to see the “United” back

in our visitors’ name. No doubt thefinancial arrangements with Man-chester’s “other” club which resultedin the name change along with thetemporary dropping of the traditionalred shirts, proved beneficial at thetime, but to outsiders like me, it didlook as though the club had sold it’ssoul for a while. Financial crises haveseemed to follow Hyde around overrecent seasons, but a fresh start as aSupporters owned club will hopefullyprove to be the beginning of a newera.

Hyde United are probably histori-cally recognised on two fronts. Thathorrific drubbing they received at Pre-ston North End over a century ago(although I seem to remember it wasa fore-runner of the current club), andthen being part of the artificial surfaceexperiment from the 1980’s.

Along with Luton Town, PrestonNorth End, QPR and Oldham Athletic,Hyde installed their own version, which, although not to everyone’staste, was certainly a great improve-ment on the old surface at EwenFields, which, on occasions, resem-bled a ploughed field! Believe it ornot, I have, in my loft, a piece of thatvery synthetic turf! On visiting theground during the summer that it wasripped up, I found a small piece lyingpitch-side so (and I do apologise forthis) I pinched it as a souvenir. Betthere’s not much of that pitch still inexistence. (Offers anyone?!)I’ve also seen the development of

Ewen Fields over the years into a fineground, more than capable of hostingtop level non-league football. A far cryfrom the days when the teams usedthe long-since demolished adjacentschool buildings as changing rooms. Those were the days when twomuch-missed people were at thehelm at Hyde, manager Pete O’Brienand Chairman Peter Pluck. I used totravel to Ewen Fields on many occa-sions back then, and always enjoyedthe atmosphere, especially from thenoisy shed! The last two seasons have been a

nightmare for the club after hitting thenon-league heights, but with GaryLowe and Martyn Booty back incharge, I’m sure this season will seea resurgence for this fine old club.Today should be quite a test for our

lads.

NOT QUITE THE STARTTwo games gone and two defeats.

The bookies will already be saying“We told you so”. But let’s remember

one thing.....over recent seasons wehave ALWAYS started badly. It’s notdone us too much harm though, hasit?!Apparently we got our just desserts

at Rushall, but Tuesday night provedto be a tight game, settled ultimatelyby an early goal. After that it wasmuch a case of a midfield battle, where, despite some good movementand passing, neither side producedmuch in front of goal. The silly finale is best forgotten as

it was totally out of tune with the restof the match, but there was sufficienton the night to hopefully see usbeginning to develop as a team. Atthe end of the day, this is still a newsquad that will naturally take time tobed in.

It’s an awfully long season, withmany points to aim for, so despite theearly setbacks, I, for one, amlooking forward positively toanother entertaining cam-paign.

Unknown to many supporters,Wayne Goodison, the new clubcoach, has a huge amount of experi-ence, not just at non-league, but atevery level of the game. We had a lit-tle chat about his background both asa player and as a coach.“I really don’t like banging on about

my playing career, and most playersdon’t know anything about it unlessthey go hunting for themselves. I’mnot one for going ‘I did this’, or ‘I didthat’. At the end of the day I had avery average career as a professionalfootballer really, and it was a goodlong time ago now - as you can tellfrom the old black and white photoswe used to have back in the 80s!”Wayne left school at sixteen years

of age to take on a two-year footballapprenticeship at Barnsley, a teamthat was, at that time, in the old Divi-sion Two, which would now be theChampionship. He was lucky enoughto be signed on professional termswith the club at the end of that period, making his full debut shortly after-

wards, back in 1982. He played first-team football for the next four and ahalf years before going on loan toCrewe under the long-serving DarioGradi (who’s still at the club after 32years!).“Crewe were in the Fourth Division

then, but I was really impressed withthe way the club was run. They had afantastic setup, and a great manager.Initially it was a month’s loan, thatthen became two months, and even-tually I was there for three and a halfyears.” Crewe had an amazing youth policy

and set-up, even back then, whichwas the envy of many a club, andwas responsible for players such asEngland Captain David Platt, RobbieSavage, Neil Lennon and SteveJones, and Dario Gradi’s efforts withregard to player development andtechnical excellence were second tonone.“It was a great place to play. We

even managed to get promotion forthe second time in Crewe’s history!

“After Crewe I spent two years play-ing for Rochdale, which someRammy fans may even remember. Ireally enjoyed my time there.“Football was a very different game

back then, particularly at that level. We all laugh now about how muchprofessional players at all levels aregetting paid, but back then it was a lotmore humble. While I was atRochdale I started wonderingwhether it was time to start looking fora career outside of football, so that Icould pay the bills. Your life as a pro-fessional footballer is notoriouslyshort, and could be ended at anymoment with a wild tackle or an injury, and we all have to pay the bills.“About that time I’d

just got married, andmy wife kept sayingthat it was about time Iwent and got myself aproper job, so that’swhat I did. I becameself-employed, workingin recruitment for ahospitality company, which meant that, although not full-time, Icould still manage toplay some football.”A two year spell play-ing for today’sopponents HydeUnited followed, before almost a year atAccrington and thenthree and a half at Bux-ton.”Coaching was always

in the back of Wayne’smind, and had beensomething he’dbecome involved with, even as far back as hisdays at Barnsley.

“I’d had quite a bad knee injury, when I started out at Barnsley, thatkept me out of the game for ninemonths. The club were really decentwith me, and they suggested that I domy coaching badges, so I began withthat at about ninenteen. It was reallyuseful because when I went to CreweI got to do a lot of coaching work withtheir youth setup - working with theacademy kids they had comingthrough, which we were all encour-aged to do by Dario. So I’ve alwaysbeen really interested in coaching.Infact, when I finished at Buxton, theyasked me to look after the team for awhile when the manager left. Theysuggested I be player manager,

which was supposed to be a veryshort term thing, but it eventuallylasted about six months. I have to saythat it was one of the hardest thingsI’ve ever done in my life, so I canunderstand a little bit of what Robbo’sgoing through at the moment.Tryingto play, manage and organise at thatlevel is so difficult, people just don’tunderstand the commitment it entails, and what people like Robbo actuallydo for their football clubs. Hisachievements in assembling a teamlast season, and in keeping Rammyin this league are huge, and reallyshouldn’t be overlooked by anyone.

“After the managing at Buxton Idecided to have a break for a fewmonths before Mark Molyneaux(Rammy’s goalkeeping coach) askedme to go and help him out at Trafford, before both of us moving over toChorley where we had a great twoand a half years. We managed to getto the playoff finals up at Chorley, andwere so close to getting promoted! Inthe end we were beaten on penaltiesby Radcliffe Borough in 2003, butthey were great times.”

A return to Trafford was on thecards for Wayne, as Gary Moore, who’d played under him at theclub, was appointed managerand asked Wayne to goalong and help with thecoaching, taking the clubto the dizzying heightsof the Evostik Premierby way of the play-offs,during their four yeartenure.

The move to joinRammy came aboutshortly after Robbohad taken over.Wayne had coachedRobbo for a time at

Salford, and the two had remainedfriends, so when he phoned to con-gratulate Robbo on his appointment,Wayne was invited along for thecoaching job, which he dulyaccepted. “I was very impressed with

Robbo’s plans for a newsquad at Rammy, andwith what heachieved last sea-son in terriblecircumstances. I admire hispassion and hiscommitment, and can seethis clubreally goingplaces underhis leadership. The offer to beinvolved was toogood to turn down, and I was veryproud to becomethe coach atRamsbottomUnited.”

We caught up with Club ChairmanHarry Williams, working on the pitchwith a divotting fork, on the morningafter the Buxton game. We took theopportunity to first ask him how he feltabout the well-publicised shenani-gans towards the end of Tuesday’smatch, when tempers became morethan a little frayed.“I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t

see any of it. I have so much to do forhome games that I seldom get to seeany football any more. The only thingI knew about it until afterwards wasthe sound of the referee blowing hiswhistle frantically. I was round theback, opening the gates up for theaway team to get out after the game.Roger Davis came up to me shortlyafter and said, ‘It’s all let loose outthere, H!’. That’s all I knew about it.“We don’t want any of this kind of

stuff going on down here though. Thisis a family club and I don’t want kidsseeing any kind of aggro on the pitch.I understand that people get frus-trated, particularly if they’re upagainst players who they’re strugglingto contain. I remember when GeoffLay used to play for us, he’d run ringsaround players who’d end up taking abit of a swing at him - my advice wasalways to just laugh it off, laugh atthem - there’s nothing you can do thathas more impact. Hitting out just getsyou into trouble and shows that youcan’t control yourself.“The referee was good about it, and

hasn’t raised a stink, and that’s whatI think we’d all prefer, but then you goon the internet and there’s videos ofthis and that, seemingly from Buxtonfans. Those fans have to rememberthat nothing good is going to comefrom it all blowing up. I’ve already hadthe MEN phoning this morning for a

statement, and these smug kids withtheir cameras who think they’re cleverposting it for all to see don’t realisethat it’ll be Buxton that get in troubleas much as anyone else!“I know that our squad were in the

dressing room for a good long whileafter the final whistle, and I know thatour management team have levelheads on them, so I hope they can dotheir bit to make sure our playersbehave professionally, so I’d like tohope that the silliness will blow overquickly.”

While many fans think that footballinvolves turning up on a Tuesday orSaturday before going home for yourtea, we asked Harry a little bit aboutthe post-match work for him and hismerry band of helpers.

“I reckon that matches like the Bux-ton one take about fifteen hours ofwork for the 3-4 of us. There’s wash-ing kits, cleaning the changing rooms, divotting the pitch (which isn’t too badat this time of year), and then cuttingand marking it out for the next game- we cut it at least twice a week inAugust. Andy and Jack sort out the lit-ter about the place and empty andsort the bins for recycling and the like.“Jack and Chris normally give the

dressing rooms a clean straight afterthe match, and then Andy goes inand does the showers and thefloor again in the morning.“I was talking to the grounds-

man down at Rushall lastweek, and our match wasthe twelfth they’d had so farthis season! Twelve

matches to preparefor, and they’d hadno rain for about twomonths. It’s a thank-less job sometimeslooking after a pitch!“I’d like to say that the

Rammy players havebeen really well behavedso far this season, layingtheir kits out neatly after thegames, which shows thatthey have a bit of respect forthe club. Some of the playershave a thing for cutting thefeet off the socks, which Ican’t fathom out. We bought22 pairs of socks at the startof the season, and we justhave seven pairs left. It’s notso bad if they look after theirown pairs, which they seemto be doing this season, butsometimes you just find apile of mutilated socks on

the floor, which is a bit bizarre. We’re always after more help down

at the ground though, so if anyonecan spare a bit on a weekday, any-time between about 10 and 2 o’clock,we’d really appreciate the lift withstuff.”

After dropping down from the ConferencePremier Division Hyde United hoped thattheir relegation hangover would not spillover into 2014/15 Conference North sea-son. With a mixed bag of pre-seasonresults, Hyde’s league campaign got off toa dreadful start with defeats in each oftheir opening five games. The rot wasfinally stopped when the Tigers gainedtheir first point in a draw at home to Tam-worth at the end of September. A secondsuccessive draw away to Gloucester Citywas followed by two more defeats, leavingHyde staring at the wrong end of the divi-sion.An 8-0 away win at Chadderton in the

Manchester Premier Cup gave the Tigersfans some respite and this was followed bytheir first league win of the season whenthey defeated Lowestoft Town 5-1 athome. Any optimism was short lived asHyde were knocked out of the FA Cup atthe Second Qualifying Round stage atEwen Fields by Marine. With a further five

losses and no points gained duringNovember, league survival was lookingextremely ominous for the Tigers. Theirsecond league victory came, when theybeat North Ferriby United 1-0 at home. The New Year saw no change in fortunes

as they were thrashed at StalybridgeCeltic, losing 7-1. With the club nine pointsadrift at the bottom of the ConferenceNorth Hyde dispensed of Scott McNiven’sservices and former manager Gary Lowereturned to try and save something fromthe disastrous season. The Ewen Fieldshome faithful would have to wait for thebeginning of March before they sawanother league win, which came courtesyof a 1-0 victory over Sollihull Moors. Withrelegation now a formality their leagueform slightly picked up as they picked uprhree draws. With the season coming to a close, April

We’re still a mile away from where weneed to be, but the effort and commit-ment seemed to be much improvedon Tuesday. How did you feel about the performance?I thought we played well and kept theball really well, but we're missing thatlittle cutting edge around the box atthe moment but that will come.

Two young centre-halfs, with AndyDawson taking a bit of time to recoverfrom Saturday's game. A difficult job,how did you feel they did? Both lads played really well against astrong front line. Apart from the goalthey both didn't put foot wrong. Kieranis such a young lad and he's onlygoing to get better.

It's going to take time for a new teamto gel, and we can see improve-ments with each match. Still missinga couple of strong, experienced play-ers in the squad though, would yousay?I do agree to an extent but playersonly get experience from playingmatches. We are a young changingroom and it could only help to havefew more experienced players with abit of a wise head on their shoulders.

What is the mood like in the dressingroom? Are people managing toremain positive? We all want those first points on theboard and I'd take a scruffy one nil to

get them. That being said I've told thelads, as have the gaffers, that it's along season and we’re only twogames into it. Anything can happenover those weeks and months.

What did you make of Tuesday's'brawl' in injury time?I would like to apologise to all the fansfor the scenes at the end of the game.I can't justify what broke out butsometimes these things happen. Weall know that it doesn't make for goodviewing, so from all the lads in thechanging room I’d like to say sorry.

A few people have pointed at weakrefereeing being the possible cause of things becoming niggly, but I'm notso sure. I think he should have atleast booked number 9 for the chal-lenge on Spencer, but he was noworse than any other referee. Whatdo you think? In my opinion the game was even interms of decisions, but that's football. In this game we are notorious forpointing a finger elsewhere to placeblame. Cards and fouls rarely winfootball matches - it’s goals andcleansheets - so that's what I want usto worry about and talk about, not ref-erees’ decisions.

Are you finding the new lads are start-ing to settle into The Rammy Way?The changing room has changed alotfrom last pre-season with only me ,

Gassy and Pughy left Ibelieve. It's not theRammy changingroom of old, but that'snot to say we haven'tgot a good group oflads. It's different but stilla great changing roomto be involved with.

I went in the changingrooms to see a load ofsocks that are missingtheir feet. Could youexplain this bizarrecustom to us, the lay-supporter?I do this also. most lads likeankle socks on when wear-ing boots (they don't slidearound in the boot) becausefootball socks tend to slidearound when you play, mak-ing it uncomfortable, anddifficult to feel the ball. That's all itis, no strange vodoo ritual or any-thing.

Thoughts about Hyde?I'm looking forward to this game. They have a good manager who willhave them playing good footballwhich I think will make for a greatgame, so enjoy.

ms We love Whitby! In fact, if someone had

said to us pre-season, “Where would youlike as an away game in August?” wereckon that most of us would have said,“How about Colwyn Bay or Whitby?”closely follwed by the words, “But not for abloody mid-week, eh!”According to some bloke who appeared

on the Rammy forum shortly after the fix-tures were released (so how true it is, wehave no idea), the league has what theycall the central core (Rammy etc), and theNorth and South teams in three differentgroups when it comes to working out mid-week fixtures. Apart from the local derbies, which they try to schedule for Bank Holi-days - hence Salford and Workington forours - they try to schedule mid-weeks sothat the core teams (us) get to play themore remote Northern ones (Blyth, Dar-lington, Whitby). It means that teams likeStamford and Halesowen don’t get ridicu-lous trips to Blyth on a midweek evening, which makes sense, but it also means thatwe do.So, get your flexi-time figured out so you

can bunk off early next Wednesday, andget yourself over to Whitby for a bag offish and chips and a late night.

There will be a club coach running, which is £12 for the journey, with a depar-ture time to be confirmed at the time ofwriting (bloody early we expect!).Last year we had a couple of great trips

to the North Yorkshire seaside, the first aWednesday night 2-0 defeat back in Sep-tember and the second in the FA Trophy -a trip which coincided with Whitby’s host-ing of the annual Goth Fest. The RammyUltras took it upon themselves to wearHalloween fancy dress, and really lookedthe part walking through Whitby. Mostimportantly though, that’s the game thatsaw us come home 2-1 winners after anamazing volleyed goal from Jon Robinsonwith the very last kick of the game. Wereckoned he was miles off-side, but the

liner knows much more about these thingsthan we do, so we deferred to his superiorknowledge and judgement on that occa-sion!Overall last season Whitby finished up a

disappointing thirteenth in the league, witha hint of George Graham’s Arsenal abouttheir results (not scoring a huge number, but not conceding many either), a fact thatthey put right in their opening away gameagainst Stourbridge, putting four past thevisitors, who were no doubt jet-laggedafter crossing the time-zones on theirseven hour journey from the West Mid-lands. Four different players found the netfor Whitby including summer signingMikey Roberts whose transfer from Spen-nymoor was financed by an anonymousdonor to the club. The 24 year-old scored20 goals last season and has had interestfrom a number of professional clubsincluding Crystal Palace.Tuesday saw Whitby playing in a ‘local

derby’ against Blyth Spartans, which is buta mere two hours drive for the poor sods! The result was 3-2 to Blyth, with Robertsfinding the score-sheet twice for Whitby, the first a penalty, putting him on threegoals in two games, and definitely one tokeep an eye on. If you’re not going to the game then see

if you can get Whitby Town Radio on yourcomputer - there’s a link via their website.Last year they did a pretty good job ofcommentary (once they figured out how towork the volume controls) and gave adecent, well-balanced view of the game. They’ll even read out text messages if youfancy bombardingthem withRammy stuff.

If you’regoing to thegame thenhave a safejourney, and enjoythe chips!

What a pain in the back-side! Two hours twentyminutes at the best of timesto get over to Whitby, but atrush-hour on a Wednesdaynight, who knows how longit’ll take. The journey is 121 miles,

and probably won’t be toobad once you get pastLeeds, but the A169 afterMalton becomes single-car-riageway for quite longstretches, which can betrouble if a tractor decides topull out and chug alongslowly.Route-wise, below is the

way we normally go. It ispossible to go on the A59through Harrogate, butthere’s a roundabout in themiddle of Harrogate whichis terrible at rush-hour, soprobably not the best way(Google maps says it’s thesame distance that way, but20 minutes longer on thejourney-time).

1) M66S down junction 4 forthe M62 East

2) M62E to junction 9 for theM1 North

3) M1N to junction 44 for theA64, sign-posted York

4) After about 40 minutes,at Malton take the slip-roadfor the A169, sign-postedWhitby and Pickering, left atthe roundabout

5) Follow Whitby on theA169 for about 50 minuteson the A169, then right atthe roundabout where youcan go no further, which isthe A171

6) At the next roundabout(at the garden centre) takea left which is sign-postedB1461 for Whitby Pavilion

7) Take a left at Lidl and theSpar petrol station, ontoLove Lane

8) At the roundabout at theend of Love Lane take aright, sign-posted ‘TownCentre’, onto WhitebridgeRoad, which becomesUpgang Lane

9) The ground is about400yds on your left.

Good luck!

If you want the easier way, then just type YO21 3HZinto your sat-nav and seewhat happens.

PHIL EDGHILLWelcome to

everyone fromHyde United for thisafternoon’s game. The defeat to Bux-ton on Tuesdaywas quite hard totake as I thoughtwe played somegood football andon the balance ofplay definitely didn'tdeserve to lose.Teams at this levelare durable and resilient which means you've got tohave that 'bit of magic' in the final third and be ruthlessin front of goal to get results. Unfortunately we didn'twork their goalkeeper enough, we gave away an earlygoal as we did at Rushall, which allows teams to sitback and play on the counter attack. I said to the lads after the game the two areas of the

pitch that matter most are scoring and not concedinggoals, and we have struggled in those areas in the firsttwo games. I am confident that once we get one infront during a game it will give the lads confidence togo on and score more, but we have to make the rightdecisions in attack and be resolute defensively tomake it happen. There were plenty of positives to takefrom the Buxton game and we need to be on the frontfoot against a team who like us haven't won a gameyet.Today's game is a big one for us and I have hugerespect for their manager Gary Lowe. I spent sevenyears playing for him for two different clubs with greatmemories along the way. He has bags of experienceand knows non-league inside out. We still talk regu-larly and I'm sure Hyde will prove to be a stern test thisafternoon. Lastly I want to apologise on behalf of everyone for

the unsavoury scenes at the end of Tuesday's game. It's gone now, and more important we need the fansbehind the players to hopefully get a win today and getour season up and running.Enjoy the game!

CHELSEA GRANT LICENSE TO USDENTIST TO HUNT JOHN TERRYUS dentist Walter Palmer has been granted a

licence to hunt John Terry, after Chelsea officialsdeclared their captain to now be too old to makea meaningful contribution to the club.Terry was substituted at half-time during his

side’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, with clubofficials immediately offering him to anyone willingto pay a few quid. The highest bid came from Walter Palmer in

the US, who said that as long as the paperworklooked reasonably kosher, he’d offer a few hun-dred grand for the privilege of shooting him witha bow and arrow.

As one Chelsea official explained, “HavingJohn Terry’s head mounted on the wall of a den-tist’s surgery will make room in the squad foryounger members to step up and potentially leadthe pride.”“It is the natural order of things, and people

shouldn’t be sad because John has had a longand fruitful career with Chelsea – it’s just now wedon’t care what happens to him.”Palmer himself spoke of his delight at the deal,

“I’m so excited, I’ve been told about a few placeshe hangs out, so we’re going to stalk him for afew days before I take a shot.”“And from what I’ve read about him, most peo-

ple won’t give a toss compared to Cecil the lion.”

JOSE MOURINHO CUTS NHS WAIT-ING LISTS TO ZERO AFTER TELLINGDOCTORS WHO NEED TREATINGJose Mourinho has been thanked by adminis-

trators inside the NHS, after he reduced waitinglists to zero by declaring no-one genuinely inneed of treatment.

The newly qualified medical expert andChelsea football manager, was keen to bring hisgifts to bear across the NHS after flexing his diag-nostician muscles during Chelsea’s opening daydraw against Swansea. As one Chelsea insider told us, “If you want to

know if a player needs treating or not, do not lookat the doctors, do not look at them – you look toJose, only Jose.”Mourinho himself told reporters he was glad to

help the NHS with his special skills. He said, “To make a correct diagnosis, you

must first understand people who fake injuries, and I spend all day with footballers, so I know fak-ers.”“53 year-old Joseph Miller of Stoke? Fake. He

does not need a new hip, take him off the list.”“42 year-old Sarah Matthews of Basingstoke?

Fake. She does not need a bunionectomy, takeher off the list.”“I can do this all day. It is like a gift – only the

special one can decide when someone should behealed.”Football fan Simon Williams told us, “It does

seem like Jose has been blessed with a divinegift.”“So maybe he could use it to stop his players

rolling around like they’ve been hit by a sniper?”

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAMAPPLIES FOR POLITICAL ASSYLUMThe Australian cricket team has applied for polit-ical asylum, claiming they face severe mental andphysical abuse if they return to their country. Lawyers representing the team have claimed

that the abuse they will face if returned home can-not be expressed in the English Language, largely because that’s not what Australians actu-ally speak. The Home Office is reported to be taking the

application extremely seriously after spendingabout five minutes reading their fellow country-men’s comments on Twitter. “My God, the abuse,” a clearly shaken Home

Office spokesman told us. “Some of it is franklyindescribable.”“To be honest some of it is incomprehensible, aswell. What the heck is ‘a pack of drongoes worsethan a wombat’s arse and a dead dingoes dongerof runs?'” He asked

Buxton are said to be one of thefancied teams in the NPL this seasonand came to the Harry WilliamsRiverside Stadium fresh from a con-vincing win against Darlington on theopening day. On that basis the Ramswill feel far from disheartened by anarrow defeat in a game that wasclosely contested throughout. Theproblem was that a much improvedperformance from the defeat atRushall never really offered anythingmore than the final outcome. The Rams looked to play neat pro-

gressive football throughout and inDominic Hale, playing notionally onthe right but often floating inside, have a match winner. The problem onthe night was that despite a mid fieldtrio of Alex Meaney, Prince Haywood

and David Kuba-Kuba buzzing abouttirelessy, all neat in possession, theRams could not find the way to gethim involved sufficiently often orquickly to pose more than an occa-sional threat to a well drilled andeffective Buxton back four. As a resulthis contribution until sent-off in theclosing moments in an unseemlybrawl that started and restarted 3times taking up the whole of the 4minutes of added on time, wasrestricted to a mazey run from touch-line to penalty spot in the first half, and a brilliant ball inside the fullbackhalf-way through the second halfwhich put Grant Spencer clear ongoal - his cross/shot going just wideof the post.In truth those were the only two

moments in which the Rams lookedlike unlocking the Buxton defence inwhich Joel Bembo-Leta was out-standing and their goalkeeper PhilBarnes comfortable - his only savecoming from a diving header from hisown defender. Once they had taken the lead on

ten minutes, by way of a low shotfrom the edge of the area which hadsufficient direction and pace to leaveGrant Shenton with little chance, Bux-ton were content to sit back and denyThe Rams any chance of gettingbehind their back four. The Rammy midfield could not be

criticised for effort, but in style, sizeand pace they are all much of amuchness, lacking in physical pres-ence what they offer in endeavour,

Buxton, moving the ball quickly andaccurately, had increasing joy exploit-ing the space between the Ramsfull-backs and centre-halves. Fromone such move a ball from the dead-ball line seemed certain to presentthe visitors with a second goal butwas denied by a fine plunging savefrom Shenton. The Rams never gave up trying but

with diminishing results and the

Good afternoon everyone - I hopetoday finds you well and healthy. Wewelcome a new opponent for the firsttime in Hyde United to the Harry-WIlliams RIverside Stadium thisafternoon.Unfortunately, I did not make it to

the game on Tuesday night againstBuxton, which was a pity as I am verykeen to come up and watch this newlook Rammy team in action. I haveheard so much so far about the qual-ity on the park and although we arecurrently without a point and withouta goal, there is still plenty of encour-aging signs I believe. I have beenslightly bemused by the comments onthe fans’ forum, some calling forRobbo's head after just two games ofthe new campaign (and even someafter the first game!). Give the guy achance! He is working his rear end offto get the team together and it willtake some time to shape it.He was given the rough end of the

stick back in January and he pulledoff the miracle of keeping us up lastseason. This season was alwaysgoing to be tough. You have toremember that Bernard and Jonnostarted their tenure with a 5-0 defeatat Newcastle Town and just one pointfrom their opening two games (2-2against Glossop North End in thesecond game) so lets give Robbo,Edgy and the coaches time to mouldthe team their way and find their for-mations etc. It does take time, thisleague is hard work and you have todevelop the squad to work at thislevel of the game. This isn't NorthWest Counties, this is hard graft andyou have to really dig deep.I have to say that I was really disap-

pointed with the video footage of the'brawl' (otherwise known as a com-

plete and utter set of handbags!) fromthe game against Buxton on Tuesdaynight. Good grief, what a load of oldnonsense, not overly helped by therunning commentary of the videoingBuxton supporter with his rose tintedspectacles on, blaming everything onRammy. Unfortunately, because ofthe 'Radcliffe incident' a couple ofyears ago - and it should be notedthat none of the people involved inthat are now with our club - our clubcontinues to get a bad rap wheneveranything happens like this. It reallyisn't fair on us that we get tarnished inthis way and I hope that we don't getcarpeted for this. From what I hear, Idon't think we will but you know whatthe FA are like and they will no doubthave received the youtube clips.

I won't be at today's game. No, I amnot at the Ashes last Test match atThe Oval, I am doing somethingmuch more important. I am strappingthe pads on for Calmore Sports ThirdXI down at the King George V PlayingFields against Bramshaw Second XIin my final match of the 2015 season. My scores of 0 not out, 10 and 0 thisseason are not exactly going to getEngland coach Trevor Bayliss bang-ing my door down as a stand inreplacement for Joe Root. I havequite enjoyed my cricket this seasonwhen I have had opportunity to play -which is not very often because of mywork commitments. I suppose havinglost the weight that I have, I am muchmore able to contribute to the cause... ok ok I know my scores are rubbishbut you know what I mean!!

...and I’ll tell you another thing...“It’s the Kop End,” said Alan Shearer in his tweet while reviewing Benteke’s

goal during the Liverpool v Bournemouth match on Monday night, “so NOToffside!!!”

Well do you want to hear what I think? Doesn’t matter, I’m going to tell youanyway - I think they should stop messing about with the rules! Don’t get mewrong, I don’t think all their tinkering is useless - they got it rightish when theychanged the off-side rule to allow players to not be offside if they’re not interferingwith play. I remember loads of times when some poor fella is laid down inthe area desperately needing treatment only for him to be playing the entireopposition team on-side. Ah, the good old days when they used to just letplayers quietly expire on the pitch without any rush to give them treatment(unlike that Chelski bint who got her roasting last week from The Chosen One).

Other times that they’ve got rule changes right? How about never! They getem wrong - every time. But do they learn? Do they ever hold up their handsand say, “Do you know what, we got that wrong?” Do they eck as like. Whatthey do is they bring out another, even more stupid rule change to try and correctthe last stupid one they came up with.

Let’s take a couple of examples, one of which we’ve had to suffer from quiteseriously here at Rammy. Remember when Andy Dawson had to leave themr cantankerous

Remember when this was all youneeded to explain offside to the kids?

Page 49: 65 Ramsbottom United v Hyde United

pitch in the last minute cos he had‘blood on his shirt’? I’m alright with theblood on shirt thing - get them off. Wedon’t want that Terry Butcher thinggoing on again, where he looked like heWAS some kind of butcher. BUT...Dawson had to leave the field andwait until the opposition had taken thecorner (and scored) before he couldcome back on! What’s that about! Ifyou have to change your shirt, orsomeone crocks you, and you gettreatment then YOU have to leave thefield! Of all the numb-nuts rules I’veever heard, they’re encouraging playersto turn down treatment, and ifthey’re badly hurt then they have toleave the pitch!

And then how about the goalkeeper rule.Overnight keepers couldn’t just be the fatkid who was crap out-field. They had tobe able to volley the ball under pressurefrom a striker cos they suddenly weren’tallowed to pick it up. Next they were onlyallowed five seconds to boot it, and thenthey were allowed three steps, and nowthey seem to be allowed just about anything- we’re back where we bloody well started, wherein lies a really good lesson for the rule changers: Ifit ain’t broke then don’t fix it!

And so, the new rule they’ve brought out this summer to try andhelp fix the new rule they brought out last summer is all the wrongway round for me. Learn your lessons, put the beloved off-side rule backexactly the way it was before, and stop messing with the beautiful gamejust for the sake of justifying your travel and hotel expenses for a jollytrip away!

...and I’ll tell you another thing...

Pre-season saw us visiting somegreat stomping grounds of old, and Iwas quite looking forward to our visitto Colne’s Holt House Stadium as Ihadn’t been to their ground since thelate 1980’s, when Colne Dynamosand Rossendale United regularly bat-tled it out for supremacy in the NorthWest Counties League. I can evenremember turning up on a coldDecember evening to find the sta-dium in complete darkness, andbeing informed by a lone steward thatthe game had been called off. Jeez, the modern football supporter doesn’tknow the hassles of following thegame in those long gone, pre-internetdaysOnce again, I was joined by Mrs

Darkside and Jack the Lad for thejourney and I managed to remembermy way to the ground without too

much help (oris it hindrance?) from the old satellitenavigation thingy. Another healthyturnout of Ultras had made the jour-ney to this Burnley FC heartland, including Mr and Mrs Carlsberg freshfrom their Portuguese holiday, although Ethan/Carlsberg Jr wasmissing in action and last seen bash-ing COD (that’s playing Call of Dutyon da X-Box to us old farts, of whichI’m sure there’s many reading this). Colne had an excellent support that

reminded me a lot of our very own,Rammy Ultras, in that they weresmall in number, but loud in their sup-port of the team. The game kicked offwith both sets of supporters under thecovered terrace behind the goal, withboth singing and supporting their

team side by side, without a hint oftrouble. Millwall v West Ham, this wasnot, and long may that continue atnon-league grounds up and down thecountry. A big cheers to the Colnesupport and if there’s any justice inthe football world (which I don’t thinkthere is, sadly) it would be nice toplay them again in the near future, butthis time in the NPL.Robbo must have had some selec-

tion headaches during thepre-season, trying to give as manyplayers a run out as he could, yet atthe same time trying to get

some idea ofhis best starting

eleven. I don’t really envy him thisjob, but I think most of us have beenquite optimistic with what we’ve seen.Again, this was another mix ‘n’ matchteam which saw us looking danger-ous in attack, but some defensiveerrors saw this game ending in a 3-3draw which, on reflection, was proba-bly a fair result as Colne looked adecent outfit for the NWCL and cer-tainly worked hard throughout theninety minutesWith most people back from their

holidays now, it was a pretty largeconvoy of cars that made our wayfr

back to sunny Rammy for few post-match pints in the Cricket Club. As wewere making our way back down theM65 I spotted Robbie in the carbehind and took great pleasure inflicking the ‘V’s at him from out of thewindow, only to be informed by Roblater that it wasn’t actually him. So, ifyou were travelling down the M65 acouple of Saturdays ago and hadsomeone abusing you with a coupleof fingers, I apologise profusely andplease don’t beat me up round theback of the tea hut

SHEFFIELD...If I was one of these modernists

who goes around twittering and spo-tifying all day long, I’d probably haveone of those bucketlists that seem tobe all the rage these days. But, stuffswimming with dolphins or climbingEverest, if I had a bucketlist then avisit to Sheffield FC would be prettyhigh on that list. That’s not justbecause I could visit Tanners Croftand Lara, our Derbyshire Ultras, forafternoon tea and cream scones, butalso so I could say I had visited thehome of “The Oldest Football Club inthe World”. This weekend was origi-nally down for the Rams to have their

continental tour with a visit to playFlint Town in Wales (well, just outsideWrexham to be precise and for thoseof us who have visited there it wasn’tparticularly appealing, more scary),but when that game fell through wearranged the Sheffield game. As Mar-tin Hulme would say,“Get in!”

And

What a great daywe had for the game, withthe sun shining and the birds singing(that’s not the Pussycat Dolls, by theway) - what better way to spend yourSunday afternoon? Well, shopping atThe Rock in Bury with your LadiesDarts companions in Mrs Darkside’scase, although to be fair to my (much)better half the shopping trip wasarranged before this fixture came out,and she did bring me a big box ofAfter Eights back with her. With a2.00 kick off time, I left Ramsbottombefore lunchtime accompanied, yetagain, by Jack the Lad.

There’s not many better drives inthe UK than going through Glossopand over Snake Pass, especially ifthere is ninety minutes of footballinvolved in the journey. We made good progress, dodging

the many cyclists (how popular iscycling becoming since Britishcyclists actually got good at thesport? Damn em’, I say) and soon Iwas giving Young Jack a history les-son about how The Dam Busters wasfilmed at Derwent Reservoir, like weALL do every time we pass it. Haveyou watched it yet, Jack ? That’ll be ano, I reckon. Bloody teenagersSheffield now play their football in

Dronfield, more or less in betweenSheffield and Chesterfield, and ourvisit coincided with the “Dronfest”music festival which was beingstaged in a field next door to the foot-ball ground. At least we got twoevents for the price of one, £8 again, although the only artist I recognisedon the bill was Andy Fairweather Lowand he seemed a bit dated, to myyoung punk ears at least, even backin the 1970’s.

It was an excellent turnout fromEast Lancashire, as well as the afore-mentioned Tanners Croft who hadonly had to travel a few stops on thetrain, for what was our longest dis-tance game of pre-season. Weout-numbered the Sheffield support, although this is not surprising as Iwould not like to be faced with over a20 mile round trip to watch my localteam. It must be difficult for theSheffield support at the moment andI wish them all the best in their questto find a new ground closer to theirsouth Yorkshire roots. I bought myselfa programme, £2 and it was forSheffields previous game against

Northampton Town with a page onRamsbottom United inserted, so Iwasn’t too impressed with that. I wasmore impressed with the local, Dron-field pasty and got quite a shockbiting into it and actually getting a realpiece of steak. Greggs, this certainlywas not!Despite a Grant Spencer penalty in

the first half and a late wonder goalfrom substitute, Tom ‘Baby Boris’Hartley, another experimental Ramsside ended up losing 3-2 in what wasprobably our worst pre-season per-formance. After the game a few of thetravelling support headed to theadjoining Coach and Horses pub fora post-match pint, whilst the rest of usmade plans to meet up back inRammy to watch the end of thecricket down at The Riverside and, ofcourse, have a few pints of Moore-houses finest ale. That’ll do me nicely, thank you.

MOSSLEY...With just one week to go to the big

kick off and with all those higher upthe Footballing Pyramid starting theirseasons for some strange reason, our final friendly saw us visiting a reg-ular haunt from the NWCL days, SeelPark to take on Mossley FC. One ofthe beauties of pre-season friendliesis that they are often played in sun-shine and, as we set off fromRamsbottom, we weren’t let down inthat department.

The Masseys, Andy and Hilary, joined me for the short journey over toSaddleworth and we passed the timeby listening to the BBC 5Live cover-age of Leeds United against Burnleyin the Championship (that’s the Sec-ond Division in old currency, MrCunningham, and quite rightly so).fr

Hilary’s joy at a late Leeds goal (she’sa Yorkshire lass originally, tha’ knows)was short lived as Burnley got animmediate equaliser and pretty soonwe were arriving in Mossley and park-ing up in one of the streets close tothe ground. There weren’t as many Ultras at

Mossley as we had seen other awaygames, which was surprising as itwas only a half hour drive away, butmaybe they were all saving them-selves for the big day out in Rushallnext week. I went in the bar and spenta bit of time with Chairman Harry,Andy Edmunson and Woolly, makingarrangements for the Rammy Rocketdown to Rushall, and we were soonjoined by John ‘Harry’ Ayres andPeter ‘Hackers’ Taylor. By the time wehad hung the flags up it was time forkick off, well 2.55 to be precise. Aftercomplaining about the early kick off toall and sundry, Carlsberg informedme that my watch was slow and thegame had, in fact, kicked off bang ontime. With that, I sloped off for one ofthe locally baked, cheese and onionpies which went down well, but not asgood as the Dronfield pasty. Never

mind, we have Workington away in afew weeks time, winner of the “Dark-side Award for Best Pie/Pasty2014/15” so I’ll wait to spoil my finefigure until then.A good first half saw the Rams take

in a 1-0 lead at the break, with Pughiescoring the goal with an exquisite freekick from the left (you can see thegoal on YouTube or the Rammyforum, thanks to Carlsberg). In thesecond half we seemed to getdragged down to Mossley’s level andthe game got a bit disjointed, although it wasn’t helped by a whistlehappy referee. The main talking pointof the half was the non-sending off ofShents, who brought down one oftheir forwards outside the area, andwas lucky to stay on the pitch. A late Mossley equaliser made it 1-

1 and it was probably a fair result forthe hard work and effort they had putin, and anyway, it’s thenext week and theNPL that are allimportant from hereon in, so let’s here itfrom all of you... Comeon you RAMS!

Here we go again. ‘Trial By Twiface’as I call it. I suppose that the internetand social media are good in onerespect in that it allows people to veryquickly to be able to watch events forthemselves and make up their ownminds on things, without being spoon-fed opinions by the main-streammedia. But then on the other hand, itmeans that idiots like those who rambled incoherently and inaccuratelyover the videos they decided to postto youtube can state platitudes, rose-tinted opinions, and basicallyincorrect facts without any kind ofrecourse. Nobody saw Robbo kickinganyone, infact Robbo was doingnothing but trying to break up the sillyand pointless shoving that was goingon... but some idiot from Buxton canjust ramble on in the backgroundabout “did you see their manager justkick one of our lads... get off the pitchyou Rammy animals” and so on, andthat kind of thing sticks! The mainstream media know that

they can get sued for saying suchstuff, and so they don’t. The MEN andDaily Mirror articles only pointed outthe facts that they knew to be fact. For the rest they quoted people orjust let the videos speak for them-selves. There’s no sueing some16-year-old from Buxton for what he’ssaid on a video - and what if you did? It’d just cause more trouble for bothclubs... and that’s something thatthese people forget when they postthis stuff onto the internet - thiscauses trouble for all of us. It doesn’thelp the game of football in any way,it doesn’t help Rammy, but it alsodoes (importantly for them, if theyengaged their brains) nothing for thereputation of Buxton! Now I have the full thing on video,

from a couple of angles (thanks to

Jack, our fantastic camera operator, who got everything in high definition, from a close-in angle). I also havealmost 200 photos of what was goingon. My camera was almost spewingsmoke by the end of it all, and I wasless than ten yards away. Out of all ofthat I’ve released one photograph, which I put on the forum and printedhere. It’s the photo of the Buxton cap-tain punching Dominic McHale whilehe was on the ground. If I watch back the whole incident

then I can see lots of pushing, shov-ing, shouting and aggravation, but ifyou think to yourself calmly and dis-passionately, “what is actually reallygoing on in there?” and mentally stripaway all the handbag waving etc, then what do you see? If 22 peopledecided to fight then that situationwould have looked very differentindeed. The tackle from Meaney was stupid

and rash retaliation for what thewound-up number 9 did to Spencermoments before. Dominic McHalewas a bit of an idiot in winding up thenumber 9 after he went off the pitch. But the only real punches thrown arethose that were shown in the photo Iput on the forum, and here. The referee got it absolutely right

with the handing out of cards, andwas absolutely right in not making abig deal of it after the game. If theBuxton fans hadn’t stuck their videoson youtube then we could have alldished out the punishments and retri-butions to our players and got on withthe season. But they did, and so weare were we are, and I believe needto take a stance to at least try anddefend ourselves.

To go back to my original pointthough, this ‘Trial by Twitface’ is a sit-uation that is unpleasant, unfair, andsu

causing lots of trouble. Within an hourof something happening, before eventhe League or the FA (or in this caseeven our club chairman) have evenlearnt about an event, the judge, juryand executioners on social mediahave tried and executed the clubbased on scant evidence and a ram-bling and incorrect voice-over.Although I won’t go back across thedetails, who can forget the tannoyannouncer at Radcliffe blathering onabout “the players, officials and man-agers of Ramsbottom United” whennot one of the club officials was at thegame... and I’m not even sure therewere any players there! That doesn’tmatter on social media though. Wewere hung drawn and quarteredwithin an hour, just as we were onTuesday. We have to be so careful with this

stuff, folks. If you end up involved inany of this kind of ‘Trial by Twitface’then please think carefully before yousay stuff, even leaping in to defend

ourselves, which can often inflamethe situation even more. Please alsothink carefully before posting a photoor video of something. These thingscan be taken out of context and mis-interpreted, particularly if pointed atby the Daily Mirror website with a rab-ble-rousing headline. The same goes for the forum. Just

ask yourself who will be reading whatI am writing. The players we are slat-ing, or the opposition we are beratingwill all be reading what we are typingin the drunken privacy of our ownhomes.

Most importantly, let’s sticktogether. Ramsbottom Unitedis very quickly gaining areputation which we do notdeserve, and I think weall have a vested inter-est in, and a duty to tryand repair that reputa-tion.
