626 Interesting First World War and later medal group, comprising 1914 - 1915 Star, named to 2. Lieut. L. Moss. A.S.C., War and Victory,named to 2. Lieut. L. Moss., Italy Star, Defence and War medals (mounted on bar), together with miniatures. Lionel Moss began hismilitary career in 1915, when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the A.S.C. Shortly afterwards beginning Pilot training andthen commencing his first operational tour with No. 10 Squadron in France in November 1915. Whilst flying a reconnaissance sortie,Moss and his observer 2nd Lieut. Henderson were brought down by anti-aircraft fire, making a forced landing in their B.E.2. at Nieppe.Moss was wounded and as a result, did not fly again until June 1916. Moss then returned to the army from the Royal Flying Corp,ending the War as a Captain in the A.S.C. He went on subsequently to serve during the Second World War, finally ending up as anHonorary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1947. He died in Frinton-on-Sea in October 1980, aged ninety years. As well as his medals are his twoflying log books, which cover his time with the R.F.C., including his shooting down, two cloth R.F.C. wings, various period and laterphotographs of him and his British Empire Aviators Certificate. A very interesting Great War Royal Flying Corp group

The Citation for the award of the Military Cross to T. / Lt.Gerald Michael Gahagan R.E. reads: T. /Lt. Gerald Michael Gahagan, R.E. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty indemolishing railway bridges in face of the enemy and under heavy fire. When the second bridge was fired by electric exploder, only onecharge went off. He ran to the bridge, under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire and lit the safety fuze when the enemy were rapidlyapproaching, thus successfully destroying it.
