The Spectacle, pt 2: Who owns media? B2: IntroHumanitiesApril 6, 2011
Introduction
In this lesson, we will review Debords concepts of the spectacle, watch a documentaryon copyright in relation to the arts, and view examples of culture jamming andsubvertizing.

C ognitive Objectives
S tudents will review the concept of the spectacle. S tudents will weigh the benefits and drawbacks of copyright laws, both historically and
their current use. S
tudents will visually analyze a variety of artworks and discuss them in relation to theconcepts studied in the unit thus far.

Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/ Anticipatory Set (10 minutes)
A s the class will focus heavily on the idea of the spectacle, we will work together oncompleting questions on a review sheet.
I will ask students the following questions about copyright as a preassessment:o W hy was it created?o W hat are the benefits?o W hat are the drawbacks?o H ave you ever broken copyright laws?
I will inform students of the days agenda. W e will watch a major portion of adocumentary on copyright and the arts, focusing specifically on a remix musician. W ewill then look at a few visual artists who can easily be deemed visual remix artists.
Lesson Development (75 minutes)
W e will begin watching the film (5 0 minutes). W e will go over the questions I have supplied them with once the film has finished. W e will then discuss culture jamming, subvertizing, internet memes, and artists who use
these strategies:

o C ulture Jamming: disrupting or subverting mainstream cultural institutions,including corporate advertising. A rtists often use the symbols, imagery, and toolsof advertising to critique it.
o S ubvertizing: culture jamming specifically related to advertisements(S ubvert/ A dvertizing)
o Internet Meme: a concept, idea, image or video that spreads rapidly online. W e will look at several works that question the spectacle/ copyright, including that of the
British graffiti artist Banksy.
Closure (5 minutes)
I will inform students that we will continue with culture jamming the following class, aswell as look at the current state of news media and artistic responses.
W hatever time remains, we will spend working on the review sheet.
Homework F inish the review sheet.
F ormative Assessment
I will check students understanding through questions during the lecture and through thequestions on the notes sheet.
Summative Assessment
S tudents will be tested on the material on a later date.
